Toxemia explained: An antidote to fear, frenzy, and the popular mad chasing after so-called cures : the true interpretation of the cause of disease, ... sequence
Scarlet Fever, the common cold, ulcers, "the blahs," what do they have in common? In his forty and more years of practice, famed Dr. J. H. Tilden was forced to accept the evidence that ill health -- that any disease -- is unnatural to the human body, and that every observed chronic of acute illness is rooted in toxemia -- produced by the build-up of poisonous waste products of the body. With rigorous logic, pungent and iconoclastic comment, and, most important, observations drawn from decades of successful treatment, Dr. Tilden hammers home his point, makes a convincing case for his theory -- and details proven methods for achieving lifelong well-being by treating our bodies as nature meant them to be without drugs, stimulants, fad diets or surgery -- depending on their own vital resources for sustenance and renewal.
"Toxemia Explained" was written in the late 19th century (I think); in it, J.H. Tilden tries to explain why medicine is failing to eradicate illness and pain. For him, doctors keep focusing on the symptoms without considering the causes of illness.
Actually, Tilden contends, there is only one cause, and that is toxemia, the accumulation of toxins in the body. Toxemia builds up our body's normal purification mechanisms are prevented from doing their work. The main reason why these mechanisms are suppressed are to be found in lifestyle anomalies: stress, overeating, alcohol, etc. I don't remember what else.
I didn't finish "Toxemia Explained", short though it is. I just couldn't suppress my irritation at the author . While his idea sounds interesting, and even today, relatively novel, the delivery is just terrible. Tilden is obnoxious, arrogant, and paranoid. He's persuaded himself that the medical establishment of his time is hell-bent on suppressing his own brilliant dissenting voice.
But even if that's true... Tilden seems to think that being treated like a madman by the mainstream is proof that you've made a fundamental discovery. For a doctor, his reasoning is remarkably un-scientific. He keeps using sophistry, oversimplification and personal attacks as if any of it could prove his point...
Is his book about him or his ideas? He should've tried forgetting his ego and selflessly but rigorously exposing his research, and seen if he was still called a madman.
Argues that the only cause of any disease is that the body accumulates toxins and causes different parts of the body to fail, causing disease. Very good theory which I am fully behind and makes great sense. Available online at http://www.soilandhealth.org/02/0201h...
Although the author's concept explains what causes the most common symptoms of dis-eases and addresses how to prevent and 'heal', I suspect fasting and rest (i.e. let the body clean and regenerate) will not have much success for neurological and inflammatory dis-eases that so many people suffer from. These are mainly caused by metals and petrochemicals being injected directly into our bodies bypassing all protective layers and mechanisms our bodies have in preventing foreign matter entering the tissue of body and the blood. These substances, for still unknown reasons and mechanisms, get attached and accumulate within the nervous system and fat tissue, causing inflammatory crisis and tissue degeneration. I suspect that something more needs to be done on top of fasting resting and preventing further poisoning, something that can unattach and remove these substances from the body.

Naturopathic classic along with The Nature Cure book
Their is great power in the simple idea of a natural diet, adequate sleep and exercise and occasional fasting. To often little attention is paid to this and drugs and or surgery is utilized before the underlying cause is addressed.
The book was written a long time ago.It was a bit of a tough read because the type set and language used was very old. But the author's argument is sound and very logical. Dr. Tilden explains that 85% of our body's immune system is in the gut. He asserts that all disease stems from our bowels and blood being toxic. We eat the wrong things and combine foods that do not digest well together. Undigested food, purifies and ferments in its journey through our intestines. The body can not heal itself with rotting food and over time this causes our cells to become toxic and our bodies to become ill. Dr. Tilden was ahead of his time and his small book has been forgotten by many. (I also recommend reading Natural Hygiene: The Pristine Way of Life by Herbert M. Shelton N.D., Food Combining Made Easy by Herbert M. Shelton N.D and Food Combining and Digestion by Steve Meyerowitz).
While I agree with most of what Tilden talks about, there are things he says that I flat out disagree with, however, overall I found the book incredibly fascinating. He tends to depict examples in extremes but if you're able to look past that I found his thought process to be quite sound and logical. I think this will definitely rub some people the wrong way but don't throw the baby out with the bath water. If you don't agree with anything at all I suggest putting it aside but keep thinking about what you read and if your interest is peaked again come back to it. I find it hard to believe that anyone wouldn't be able to get at least one good thing out of this book.
Fabulous book. (I also recommend Food Combining Made Easy by Herbert Shelton N.D., Natural Hygiene: The Pristine Way of Life by Herbert M. Shelton N.D. and Food Combining and Digestion by Steve Meyerowitz.
