The Silence That Speaks

WHO WANTS MADELINE WESTFIELD DEAD? AND WHY?

Forensic Instincts' first order of business is to find out who's targeting their client. Under the leadership of Casey Woods, the investigative team has the resources to do just that, working inside the law—and outside it. FI's strength is its members, among them Casey's associate Marc Devereaux, former navy SEAL and a man who's equal to any situation.

Except maybe this one…

Madeline's case hits too close to home for Marc. She's the only woman he ever loved, and she's his only weakness. Now a nurse at Manhattan Memorial, she's terrified because someone is trying to kill her. So she turns, reluctantly, to Marc and FI for help and protection.

Meanwhile, Manhattan Memorial is in turmoil. With a merger in the works, the staff is still haunted by their hospital administrator's sudden death—during heart surgery performed by Madeline's ex-husband, Conrad. A surgery at which Madeline was present. The killer seems to blame both Madeline and Conrad…

With a growing list of suspects—including the grieving widow and a string of scorned lovers—Forensic Instincts will have to figure out who has the greatest incentive to get rid of Madeline. And FI has to work fast to save her…before she's permanently silenced.

Forensic Instincts (if you haven't read any of the series) is a group of diverse people brought together for their want and need to see justice done. One is their computer geek .. brilliant with a sense of humor... in love with Claire, who is a clairvoyant and adept at reading people's emotions. Casey is the boss ... who's intellect is off the charts and who studies body language. Patrick is her second in command, former NYPD Homicide Detective and Marc, ex-Navy Seal, ex-FBI.

And then there's Emma ... introduced in this book. She's on probation and is to be their receptionist. But Emma is no receptionist ... on her first interview with all the members she manages to pick everyone's pockets. She becomes like an irritating younger sister to them all.

I can't forget Hero .. the scent-smelling bloodhound. And there is Yoda ... you'll have to read the book to see who he is and what he does.

Maddy, a woman that Marc once had a close relationship with ten years previously calls out of the blue .. someone is trying to kill her and she has no idea why.

There's all kinds of things going on .... besides a near-miss hit and run, her ex-husband, a brilliant surgeon, is in a mental health facility because of depression following the death of a very good friend of his who died under his care. The hospital where they are employed is in the middle of a merger. The dead man's wife is suing everyone for her husband's wrongful death. And the dead man's social life is about to hit the newspapers .. seems like he was a real player.
There are lots of secrets and lies just waiting to be exposed. That's what Forensic Instincts does.

This has been such a terrific series! According to the author's notes, she's already working on the next one. The characters are in turn, law-abiding, except when they're not and will do whatever it takes to see justice done. They're also funny, serious, quirky, intelligent, private individuals.

The story line is a fairly fast read .... not overly complicated with a cast of thousands...and it is very well written.

I give it 5 stars because I really enjoyed the book, enjoyed the series, and look forward to reading the next one when it becomes available.

Once again the Forensic Instincts has a case where the police don't see anything. The biggest obstacle is finding out who is targeting their client and why they want them done In this fourth installment of this series we get to see into Marc's background. We know he is a former NAVY SEAL but he let the love of his life walk out of his life. We also get to meet Ryan's brother Aidian and his niece. Emily is invited to join the team on probation. The case this time involves Madeline who is convinced the night she was hit by a car it wasn't an accident but rather a murder attempt. The team gathers, disperses assignments and away they go to prove she is telling the truth. At the center of this story is the merger of the hospital that she works at and the untimely death of a patient that her husband was operating on. This patient is a close friend who medically he never should of been in the operating room let alone perform the surgery. I really enjoy this series and can't believe it has been on my TBR list for over four years.

The characters are well developed and the expertise they bring to the team has been researched and is realistic. This company is a sound business and realistic. I like how different characters circle forward and add depth to their character without interfering with the case.

While every book in this series is a taut, gripping thriller, it’s the team dynamic at Forensic Institute that makes these books so much fun to read – even while you are choking the pages in terror for one or more of the protagonists.

The team was introduced in The Girl Who Disappeared Twice. In that first story, behavioral profiler Casey Woods puts together the core of the FI team – ex-SEAL Marc, tech genius Ryan, psychic sensitive Claire, and scent-evidence dog Hero – who find both the girl and the woman she became. In later stories, The Line Between Here and Gone and The Stranger You Know, FI adds retired FBI Agent Patrick to the mix.

In The Silence That Speaks, a part of the story is the addition of a new member to the troupe. Now that the office has grown to six principals and their fame has increased, there is way more business and business detritus, than one highly sophisticated artificial intelligence. Even the real Yoda, with the Force, would have had problems managing this office, let alone one without opposable thumbs.

So the gang recruits Emma to be their new receptionist, file clerk, occasional undercover operative and resident pick-pocket. She acts like everyone’s know-it-all little sister and she fits right in. The team is going to need her.

Because the normally Spock-like Marc is completely off his game with this case. Their new client is Madeline Westfield, who once upon a time and in a galaxy fairly far away, back when Marc was still a SEAL and not an ex-SEAL, Maddy was the love of his life. And he let her go. Ten years and one divorce later, she is still the only woman he’s ever loved. And this time he’s never letting her go.

Providing he can get through the thick wall he’s built around his heart – and providing that FI can save Maddy’s much-threatened life.

Someone is out to kill Madeline Westfield, and she has no idea why. It’s only when the killer starts targeting Maddy’s ex-husband as well that the team turns its focus from whether her ex can’t let her go to who the star surgeon and the E.R. nurse might have pissed off so much that murdering them both is the only answer.

As the team investigates both Conrad and Madeline Westfield, and peers into the lives of every person at Manhattan Memorial Hospital who is even remotely near Conrad’s and Maddy’s orbit. While the team looks into the hospital’s potential merger and the family of a surgical patient Conrad lost on the table, the motive and the killer turns out to be hiding in plain sight.

Escape Rating A: The Silence That Speaks was exactly the book I was looking for over the weekend. As much as I usually find romances marvelously distracting, this was a weekend where I wanted a book I could really sink my teeth into, and this series always fills the bill. And there’s a bit of romance just for fun.

This series works for me because I like the team so much. All of the team members have very distinctive personalities (including the dog Hero!) and they mesh well. They are also very good at challenging each other when they need it, and that gives their interactions much more depth.

A lot of that challenge at the beginning is between Marc and Casey. Casey needs Marc to be his stoic and unemotional self. His very Spock-like detachment, as well as his abilities to knock out their adversaries, are a big part of what he brings to the team. Marc’s detachment is gone when it comes to Maddy, but it takes him a while to admit it. Once he does, he and Casey have some very tense moments around whether he can be emotionally involved and still do his job and protect the client. And be smart about it.

Emma is a tremendous asset to the team. Not just because she is still unknown and able to go undercover into the hospital as a candy-striper, but because she has the skills to pull off the kind of con they need while she’s there. And swipe a security badge. She’d be a terrible foe if she were on the side of evil, but on the side of the usually righteous, she’s a hoot.

The case itself is deliciously convoluted. The potential scenario is constantly changing, as the team goes from the extremely obvious (it’s usually the spouse or ex-spouse) to follow the money to the one they missed until almost the very end, cherchez la femme. What adds to the number of red herrings in the barrel is that there are so many femmes to cherchez. The original victim liked chasing women, and then paying them off at the end of his affairs. When the team finally focuses on the dead surgical patient and not the surgery itself, things start racing towards the finish.

And as they race, the readers are desperately following along, hoping that the team will figure out the final pieces before the killer claims a final victim. I couldn’t put this book down all day. I just had to see it through to the end.

If you enjoy fast-paced thrillers with real people dealing with interesting relationships while chasing complicated baddies, the Forensic Institute team is an absolutely fantastic way to lose a weekend. Start with The Girl Who Disappeared Twice and enjoy!

The Silence That Speaks is another perplexing mystery in Andrea Kane's delightfully unique Forensic Instincts series. In this latest installment, the team is hired by a woman from FI member Marc Devereaux's past following an attempt on her life.

Madeline Westfield has no idea who would want her dead and equally baffling is why she is being targeted. Knowing the police are not taking her suspicions seriously, Madeline turns to the FI team for help in unraveling the mystery. Their investigation begins at a local hospital where she and her ex-husband Conrad are both employed. The hospital is in the midst of merger while at the same time mourning the recent and unexpected death of the hospital administrator Ronald Lexington following heart surgery performed by Conrad.

The team immediately zeros in on Ronald's death as a possible motive for the attempt on Madeline's life and the clues certainly seem to support their theory. They soon find out some rather unsavory information about Ronald's past but their efforts to fully examine the data they uncover are quickly thwarted. In the midst of trying to break the heavily encrypted files, Ronald's widow falls under suspicion when it becomes obvious that she blames both Madeline and Conrad for Ronald's death. While it does not appear that her claims have merit, has her grief driven her to try to exact revenge on Madeline and Conrad?

Once again, FI leader Casey Woods depends on her crack team of investigators to dig into the case. Ryan McKay's cyber skills are immediately put to use and when he runs into a brick wall, he turns to his equally skilled brother, Aidan, for assistance. Claire Hedgleigh's psychic abilities once again prove invaluable and her intuition helps the team narrow down the focus of the investigation. Newcomer Emma Stirling's street smarts and youth add another dimension to the team and this provides them with the edge they need to infiltrate the hospital to gain access to the information they need to crack the case.

The Silence That Speaks is a fantastic addition to the Forensic Instincts series. Andrea Kane offers a viable pool of suspects and many plausible motives for the attacks on Madeline, but she does an excellent job keep readers guessing the truth right up until the novel's conclusion. An overall entertaining whodunit that mystery lovers are sure to enjoy.

The Silence That Speaks by Andea Kane (Forensic Instincts #4)

5 stars

I like this series of books. This is book 4 in the Forensic Instincts. It is a detective mystery. The characters are good and I look forward to learning more about them.

The mystery is good and keeps you guessing. I like to see the team work together.

We get to see more of Marc's personal life in this book. His personal life has always been a secret. I liked seeing him that way.
The setting in New York city, NY

The pacing is steady and shows the case step by step as they learn about it.

The drama was good, the ending was good and it was a pretty clean read one short love scene, some violence and some creeps.

Personally I will read more Andrea Kane books, I hope there will be more Forensic Instincts in the future. I got this book today and had to start reading it right away.

I was given this ebook to read by Net Galley and Harlequin Mira. In return I agreed to give The Silence That Speaks a honest review.

I really like the team of FI. It was interesting how at the start of the book they go about adding a new member. I wasn't sure about Emma at the start, but as the book went on she grew on me and you realize how well she its in with everyone. I thought it was interesting how Casey came up with Emma's role in the case they were working on. There were times her action was very integral. I also loved the bonus that Emma got at the end.

From the start I felt for Madeline, was glad that she listened to her instincts and went to FI for help. I was a bit surprised by her connection with FI and how that played into things later on. I did find parts of what happened at the hospital to be a bit predictable as I guessed the "bad guy" early on and the reason why, but it was still fun to see the info come out. You hate to say that someone did something to cause their own death, but it was very true in this case. Also funny how a person is perceived versus how they are in life.

First off, I won this book off of one of the Goodreads contests. Thanks! :)

This is the fourth book in the Forensic Instincts series and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book. You had all of the familiar characters plus a new addition to the Forensics Instincts team. I wasn’t sure how the new character would fit in but by the end of the book I was hoping that she would stay. With most mysteries I can usually guess who did it, however this book kept me guessing with a vast number of suspects and motives.

The basis of the book is that someone is out to get Madeline Westfield. She reaches into her past and calls Marc Devereaux for help and the Forensic Instincts team steps in to solve the case. We get to learn more about Marc’s past and end up meeting his family as well.

On the whole I will be giving this book 5 stars as it kept me guessing right to the very end and it was an enjoyable read. I look forward to more books in the series.

This time the crack Forensics Instincts team is hired by a woman who claims someone is out to kill her. Lots of intrigue in this one with a backdrop of a major Manhattan hospital who is about to merge with another one. Having worked in a hospital for over 35 years I always enjoy the medical thrillers and this was a good one.

This was a thrilling book from beginning to end; it kept you guessing and the plot twisted so much, which was great because I hate it when a book is so predictable. This one was not. I really like the characters in this series; they work together fluidly.

I really enjoyed this 4th entry into the Forensic Instincts series. The story centers around Madeline Westfield who is Marc Devereaux's former lover. In fact, he still loves her. When she comes to FI for help, his legendary control fails him. Someone broke into Madeline's home and later tried to run her over. She doesn't know why someone is trying to kill her. That's where FI comes in. Early in the book, someone tries to kill Madeline's ex-husband. The only event tying them together is the death of a colleague at the hospital where they both work. He died on the operating table and Madeline's ex was his surgeon. Madeline was in the room because she was on the crisis team. This is a really interesting story. I enjoyed the mystery and the slow resolution. I love that Marc owned up to what was going on. It strengthened his relationship with Casey, the owner of FI, and made for a good resolution between him and Madeline. Overall, a great read. I couldn't put it down. I loved the new team member, Emma, and sure hope we see more of her. I would like to have had a couple of additional scenes: one, where Marc and Madeline went in to more detail about why they broke up, and two, where the man who was killed's family is told why it happened. I can't wait for the next book in the series. Wondering if we'll see more of Marc's brother, Aiden. I really liked him and his daughter.

2.0 out of 5 stars -- Who wants to silence Madeline Westfield?

The 4th in the Forensic Instinct series has the team trying to figure out why someone wants to kill Madeline and Conrad Westfield.

Madeline hires FI when she is nearly run over along the road. Her husband, Dr. Conrad Westfield, is in a mental health facility because he is unable to deal with losing his friend and boss at Manhattan Memorial during a complex surgical procedure. The new CEO has plans for a merger, which leaves many of the staff upset and worried about their jobs. Motives for these attempted murders? Though I'd like to say that this was a finely tuned complex mystery with a lot of suspense and great characters, I cannot. I had to suspend disbelief through so much of the novel that I almost quit reading at 30%. I didn't like any of the team members (though they are beyond brilliant, just ask them) and their methods are clearly outside of the law. The case is closed, of course, but I couldn't work up any excitement or satisfaction.

I've read all the previous books in this series, but this will be the last one for me. Unappealing characters, lame case, ridiculous romantic situations -- it has it all.

Thank you to Edelweiss for the ARC to review.

I'm having withdrawals symptoms from FI as I typed. Gosh love these books and it suddenly dawn on me that Yoda is like Arthur in 'Second Chance' the tv series. 'He' made me laugh together with Emma and Abby.

I'm gonna read her earlier books and hope it gives me the happiness the FI books did.

In this 4th novel of the Forensic Instincts series Casey and her team take on Madeline Westfield as a client, her life and her ex husband's have been threatened...And both of them have been blamed in a wrongful death lawsuit Madeline an ER Nurse and Conrad a top thoracic surgeon have both been named in a lawsuit encompassing nearly the entire hospital where they work. When Marc sees who their client is he does a double take since Maddy was the nurse who treated him when he was a Navy SEAL and was his one and only...He is determined to keep her safe at all costs and help the FI team find the person responsible for the death, because it was murder not a natural death that killed Roland Lexington

The Silence That Speaks by Andrea Kane is perfect! In the beginning, I am introduced to the cast of characters knowns as the Forensic Instincts. I enjoyed getting to know each character and then trying to piece what was happening and why. At first, it does not appear that there was murder scene. Yet there is an attempted murder on two victims, a frame job, and then other characters escalate out of control as the unit investigates. Issues pop out of everywhere and almost at once. Andrea Kane kept me entertained the whole way through her book. I was glued to this novel. I finished it in one sitting. It is that exciting, danger packed, and full of humor too. The best part is that I had no idea who the killer or killers could be until the last 10 pages.

As usual, I'm not reading this kind of book in sequence. However, it doesn't matter. While this plot engaged my interest such that I had to finish it, there was no doubt that someone was out to get something from Maddy.

Yet, not much is done to Maddy after her near brush with death. Her attraction to Marc was not strongly felt, I feel. There were so many viewpoints that I got to put on my sleuthing hat and suspected the criminal.

This book gave me a sense of being the one who can do the sleuthing at the same time.

This rating is 3.5 stars rounded up. The book is a typical 'ho hum' medical malpractice / murder drama that was quite enjoyable. The characters were likeable and well rendered but at times they felt a bit cartoonish / one dimensional.

The plot is good (but not great) and the ending is firmly in the 'so-so' category. As in predictable but reasonably satisfying.

Having said that, the 'Forensic Institute' series is intriguing and I suspect that those who have read previous installments will enjoy this book a lot more than those who are new to the series.

This was a good read! I didn’t realize this was a series until I saw the other reviews. I loved that the storyline dealt with healthcare workers and a hospital (as a healthcare professional myself) bc I could relate to a lot of the happenings. The FI team hired to solve the murder have a lot of different personalities but it’s written well that you are able to follow everyone. They all use their expertise to piece together the missing information to solve it. I would recommend it! Excited to read the others in this series now.

Decent plot. But ugh. Emma comes across as a real jerk with TI guy Roger. She totally uses him, leads him on, flirts endlessly with him, all the while thinking shallow hateful thoughts about him. Loser. Worm. Pasty Face. Then she slaps his face when he gropes her in her skimpy dress, and taunts him with Ryan. She’s not someone Id call friend. News flash — Not all people are born blond and beautiful.
Yoda could be soooo much more. Not much of am AI Supercomputer, in my view.
I predicted whodunnit. I even predicted why. It seemed pretty obvious by about 60% into the plot.

3.5 silent stars!

Of the 4 books I had read of FI, this, I say is my least favorite.

Compared to the other 3, this one was quiet lame. The story line was not so exciting and thrilling. It was like a break from the intensity of the 3 books. Pacing was a bit slow and nothing extraordinary with the ending. Neither an explosive twist. But then again, I will still continue to read the series. And of course, other books of Ms Kane.

This was the 1st one of the Forensic Instincts series that I read. There is mystery, info re how hospitals run, info re techno updates that seem almost impossible, and a romance. The tension grows throughout the tale and I really enjoyed this as a listened to-reading experience. I would highly recommend this author and series.

I find that whenever I pick up one of these books I have a great deal of trouble putting it down until I have finished. I become fully involved in the story trying to figure who did it and what are red herrings before the end. I was completely wrong in this one. I don't feel I can say anything specific as it will definitely give away hints and spoilers. Read it for yourself to find out.

FI is out to solve another case. This one involving a woman who is being threatened after her ex husband is accused of botching a surgery. The story line is plausible but far fetched. I enjoyed the new team member and can't wait to see what all she brings to the table.

The Forensic Instincts team adds a new member, and Mark rekindles an old flame, and they manage to not have quite as grizzly a mystery as book #3 had. I like the varied team members, the use of technology that is not overly part of the plot, and the various characters.

The premise is far-fetched, I couldn't keep the characters straight (they didn't differ much from each other) & I could have done without the steamy romance (I didn't know it was characterized as a thriller/romance when I bought it on-sale) but as far as beach reads go, it wasn't bad.
