Spoilers
Just the usual sort of UF book, nothing different or exciting happened. If I wasn't so obsessed with finishing series I've started I would have given up on this one by now, also after ten books I may as well stay until the bitter end. That said Dark Debt wasn't a bad book, the writing was decent, the world was fun and easy to immerse into, and the secondary characters were likeable. But it was just so samey and been there, done that. Also, Merit as a protagonist was so vanilla and generic, she never did or said anything shocking or original, which all made for a very blah reading experience.
-What's what: Merit and Ethan have to help Morgan fight off some new bad guys (the Circle), they also have to fight the other bad-guy-of-the-week, Ethan's evil-supposed-to-be-dead master (Balthasar).
-Most of the plot was very formulaic and predictable. The Morgan/Navarre/Circle story line was slightly more interesting and not quite as predictable as the Balthasar one though.
-Liked the world, the secondary characters, and the fast pace.
-Liked Merit's scenes with her dad and Mallory, she had the most interesting relationships with them. Even though Merit's dad was a right bastard, I still liked his antagonistic relationship with Merit, he bought out the best in her, I wanted more scenes with them.
-Merit was really boring, holier than thou, and Sueish. I wanted her to fuck up or do something exciting, anything to make her seem more layered/human/relatable. She was too much of a little-miss-perfect-who-everybody-loves in a really smug kind of way. I think I prefer my UF heroines more dark and complex, like Chess from the Downside Ghosts series.
-Another thing that bugged me about Merit and just the vampires in general was how twee and proper they were about fighting and justice. I wanted them to be more ambiguous and do some killing/serious injury, instead of their usual fighting which at most only ever resulted in superficial injury. Also, I wish Merit would stop being so black and white about everything, and instead have some shades of grey in her life. It would make her so much more interesting. Her personality hasn't changed whatsoever since book 1 despite all the differences in her life, her character needs a major shake up.
-I couldn't stand Ethan and Merit's smug, self righteous, condescending attitude. In the last few books they had the habit of looking down at everyone and acting like they were so much better than everyone around them, they were even worse in this one. It was especially noticeable when it came to Morgan and various rich people, Merit and Ethan were so up themselves when they were commenting on someone else's life. I wanted them to be taken down a peg or two because their smug attitude was insufferable.
-I'm sick of all the Ethan-centric plots, the last few books have been all about him and his problems. I'd rather the focus be on the many other side characters available, he's so blah and cliché.
-What's the point of Merit being a RG member? She's rubbish at it. The only time she really ever does anything for them is when it benefits her in some way, otherwise she ignores them. Also, being part of the RG requires her to monitor the various vampire leaders, she's meant to be impartial and professional about it, yet she's so bias when it comes to Ethan. It doesn't matter that she trusts him, he's not infallible, when it comes to her RG duties she needs to treat him like every other vampire master.. And not get offended and pissy when her colleagues ask her to keep a closer eye on him. I wish the RG would just tell her to piss off, she's bloody useless.
-I rolled my eyes at Merit feeling bad for kissing Balthasar when she was magically forced to. She reminded me of other pathetic UF heroines (Leila from the Night Prince series/Rachel from the Hollows/Gin from the Elemental Assassin books) who act guilty over things they have no control over.. Of course, they all need their man to explain the obvious and absolve of them of their ridiculous guilt. Ugh.
-I was bored with all the mentions of Merit loving food and cars and hating parties and dressing up. All those constant little reminders just made an already clichéd Merit even more clichéd.
-Merit was the only female character in the thick of the action, it was like no other female character was allowed to play with the big boys. Mallory and Lindsay didn't play a significant role in the fighting or the many discussions held about their latest problems, they were only ever in the periphery of things. It made Merit come across like a speshul snowflake being the only girl allowed to play with the big boys.
-Why does any female character with power (Lakshmi, Mallory, Diane, Celine, Nicole, Irina) either end up crazy or evil or are portrayed as being incompetent or manipulative or crap at their job or unable to handle the power they have?
-Why doesn't Merit ever mention her mum or sister? She never thinks about them or talks to them or spends time with them. She only ever bothers with her dad and granddad, as if they matter to her whilst her mum/sister don't.
-Ethan seemed like such a wimp with all his bodyguards and Merit always jumping to his defence and babying him from any threats.
-What was with that human guy managing to outrun Merit, beat Nadia, run Ethan off the road? Ethan, Nadia, and Merit should have been able to best him at all of that. Aren't vampires meant to be much stronger, faster, and more skilled than humans? How were they so useless against him?
-I had to laugh at Merit 'discovering' the connection between Balthasar and the Circle. The connection was so obvious that when Merit actually told Luc and co about it and they were all shocked by her theory, I was momentarily confused because I thought it was already clear to everyone that that was the case.
Yea, I still don't buy her investigating skills, it seems like the only time she figures anything out is when everyone around her either don't have all the information she's privy to or when every other character suddenly becomes thick and blind to the obvious.
-I was disappointed in Catcher/Mallory's relationship, they were still great together but I felt really bad for Mallory. Even though Catcher loved Mallory, it did seem like the main reason he was only marrying her was because he thought it would lead to him being able to join the Order again. Even when he told Merit otherwise, I wasn't convinced.
-The relationship between Ethan/Merit was as imbalanced as usual. Again, Ethan was number one for Merit no matter what, but it was clear that Merit was just the latest in a long line of women Ethan loved. It also seemed liked the only reason Merit was endgame for Ethan was because she's going to have his kid one day and because he's at a time in his life where he just so happens to be ready to settle down, and not because he feels for her what he's felt for no-one else.
-I didn't like the vibe that Ethan's past with women wasn't about him being a playboy but about him actually being rapey. I thought he just shagged around and used women for sex, but in this one it seemed like Ethan/Merit alluded to him raping loads of women. I don't know if that's what the author was aiming for but either way it put me off Ethan's character even more.
-I'm guessing the next book will be about Merit taking down the Circle and being sappy abut Ethan, and there'll be no twists or turns or originality. Oh well, at least the books are fast, easy to get through, and require no thought to read.
