Yoga for Runners

Rate this book
Yoga for Runners uses yoga postures to both stretch and lengthen those short, tight running muscles in a way that is time-efficient and highly targeted.

Running is a fantastic cardiovascular workout that floods the body with endorphins and many runners find its rhythmic, meditative nature a natural stress reliever. The downside of repetitive motion, however, is that it taxes select groups of muscles (hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors and Achilles) and neglects the remainder. This leads to muscular imbalances and, eventually, injury.

Yoga for Runners addresses these imbalances by using yoga postures to both effectively stretch and lengthen these over-taxed muscles.

As in yoga, it's a union of all these physical and mental aspects that affect the performance of the runner as a whole. Practice the techniques together to become a stronger, smoother runner who is less prone to injury. Breathe deeper and more efficiently to train for longer. Gain a clear head to tackle negative distractions as you train or race, and in life generally.

I'm surprised this book has no reviews. It is a phenomenal book on yoga for runners!

I've been doing yoga for about a year very loosely - using some online yoga options (both free and subscription). While good they are just the classes and you are somewhat limited to what the teacher is teaching. I have purchased several yoga for runners/athlete's books and, while I certainly enjoyed them, I didn't find them the best to actually *use* to form a yoga practice. I have enough smarts to realize why yoga would be beneficial and to actually apply that to practice. However a guide is super helpful and to be able to build my own yoga practice based on what is going on with my body was welcomed.

This book has chapters that cover everything you would need to know to use yoga to enhance your running in many ways. Included here is also gait information and information on how to relax while running. Uniquely here I found the chapter on relaxation in motion with accompanying yoga information super helpful. I often will end up with a tense upper body if I run longer (10+ miles). There is also a chapter on breath here -- which can greatly influence capacity and endurance for running. The "core" chapters (what most people might want to know like legs, core, power yoga, etc) are strong with clear directions and great photo's. There are a variety of "blue" boxes all over the book that go into the rationale for doing a particular form or pose or even hints for when you are in the pose. I'm having a pea anserinus issue and there were exercises in here for that part of the body too!

Regardless of whether you have the other yoga books (Sage Rountree's two books - one for runner's and one for athlete's, the Yoga for Runners by Christine Felstead, or Power Yoga for Athlete's by Sean Vigue -- these 4 are my favorites!) this one is well worth adding to your collection. It looks like it might be a UK based book. It's fairly easy to lay flat but not perfectly so - I may go and get it ring bound for ease of use.

Yoga for runners gives a very deep insight to how runner's need to align their bodies after running. This book helped me greatly improve my form and develop a yoga routine that is relevant to what I need for my body. I also would recommend the e Book version because of the embedded videos it has; great way to learn yoga if you are new. I would recommend this book to any runner who is looking to improve his or her's weakness in the body.

A- Great for runners, esp beginners. My major qualm is that they can't use Sanskrit and some of the names they use are ones I've never even heard of it. I like this book, but wish they didn't dumb it down so much at times. Like, use real yoga poses, and talk about how to get in and out of the poses.

Nice pictures, but not as organized or comprehensive as the same title by Christine Felstead.
