Keep your hand at the level of your eyes...

Christine is certain that the Institute is trying to get rid of her. Why else would they send her to investigate a hundred-year-old cold case about some illusive “phantom” lurking in the depths of a crumbling old Opera House?

It turns out she’s probably right, but as unlikely as it seems, there might be something to it. There’s definitely more in the shadows than a few rats and some pieces of forgotten scenery—especially now that she’s woken it up.

The phantom is real. And now he's set his sights on her. As the old legends come to life around her, Christine becomes increasingly snared in the web of a monster who has linked her to a ghost from the past. But is this phantom fiend or friend? Angel of music or demon of the pit?

Her lover…or her killer?

The Forgotten Phantom is a gripping second-chance retelling of the classic Phantom of the Opera tale. It has themes of stalking and murder and may not be appropriate for all listeners.

Thrills, chills, horror, and romance! Creature Feature is a series of standalone romances that take the classic movie monsters you know and love and reimagines their stories where the villains get to keep the girl. By USA Today bestselling author Kathryn Ann Kingsley, these second-chance, star-crossed romance stories are certain to send a shiver down your spine...and keep you up all night long.

At this point, isn't Erik the original Pete Davidson? Men will look and him and cry but the hottest woman you know will send you a picture of him and say ''Okay, but hear me out...''

I hate men. But just... living men.

This is everything my kid heart could have wanted when I first put on phantom of the opera and was so sad and angry that Christine never chose the Phantom.

First %30 was perfect. Funny and sweet, and I loved Christine and Erik in this first part.
He felt really like the canon Phantom. What would have happened if Erik have lived through our time.

But then something happened.
The plot was weak. The story was a repeat of the original novel, at times without any reason as to why it was exactly the same 🤷🏽‍♀️.

*Erik started feeling as a random dude, not a XIX century gentleman at all...
Erik stopped being the Phantom to enter the Generic-Horny-Villain group 🙁

[...]A disembodied hand slapped her ass. She jumped and shrieked in surprise. "Damn it, Erik!"

💀

They were either rehearsing, sleeping, eating, or, well…he had made some sort of snarky comment about how long it'd been since he had been laid, and he was making up for lost time.

💀

*The story started going in circles. Christine thinking “I love him!”, to then go “I think I could fall for someone like him”, to again later proclaim “I totally love not other but him”... Next day “oh, but Raoul is everything society says I should need, and he winked at me once”... But that same night “How dare my work colleague Raoul grab my wrist (while arguing with me about how it is unprofessional of me to fall for a dead murderer who is also the center of my Main Investigation/Mission/Work)"... What????

The love triangle was unnecessary. We all hate Raoul here, I would have preferred to not read about him again in this Phantom Redemption Fic.

*The idea of Christine being completely fine with Erik helping her musical career by shady means of haunting and terrorizing her competition, and the story trying to make it pass as not that bad bc the coveted violinist position was occupied by someone nasty, was weird to say the least.
Was Christine really a prodigy or did she need magical help, which was it?

It could have ended a lot better.

"Keep your chin up"

I'm literally so emotional right now. I just finished this ARC 😭😭🥲

KAK's books have always immersive and just *chefs kiss* 🤌🤌

This is no exception. It's a beautiful piece. Funny in some parts with book titles such as "I married an alien raccoon warlord from mars" (I SNORTED AT THIS) to the deeply emotional parts, the moments shared between Christine and Erik 🥺🥺

And have you seen that cover? Gorgeous! I'm obsessed. I'll be getting the paperback when it comes out 🤲

Lastly, do yourself a favour and pick this book up! It won't disappoint!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

"I am not a good man, Christine. I am the worst of rogues. Remember that." He held out his hand to her once more. "But for you, I am nothing but a tamed stray dog. I will sleep at your feet if that is what you wish of me. I shall never, ever harm you."

This was not good, not bad, but very meh. The Phantom of the Opera Movie version (2004) was better than this, which is saying a lot. TBH Christine Gray "Monster Hunter" was not something I could totally buy into, but I get why the author did this. Since this is going to be apart of an interconnected series (each book a stand-alone) there has to be something to loosely connect them, this being the monster hunting agency called "The Institute". Christine is apart of this Institute through her adoptive guardian "Baltimore". We never learn much about either by the way, I'm thinking more details will come out in later books.

The dialogue was corny, the romance cringy, and the characters felt recycled from her other books. It really felt like she took Amon from "The Masks of Under" series and Julian Strande from "The Impossible Julian Strande" duet and mixed them together to make Erik aka The Phantom of the Opera. Christine pretty much was Kat's typical heroine from all her books so not much to say there.

I know Erik had a hard life, but him throwing himself a pity party every 2 minutes was starting to get annoying. The dudes a genius all powerful ghost, who cares what you look like?! I mean it went on the entire book. It got old real quick.

Overall, 2.5 to 2.75 stars for semi-originality. This could have been so much better. Kat has better books/series than this. Harrow Faire, The Masks of Under, The Impossible Julian Strande, and Maze of Shadows are all great. This not so much, this felt like the discount, dollar store version of those books/series.

Heads up, I'll be interested to see if she finishes this series since on her FB page she mentioned she was going to start writing another series and possibly put this one on hiatus. She did this with another series like this called "The Cardinal Winds" and the books came out slower and not as great quality, since it looks like she lost inspiration to write for that series. I could tell she wanted to write or rather would be writing something else.

This was just a rushed boring version of "The impossible Julian Strande". I like KAK in general but I think her books are suffering heavily from "same book syndrome" which doesn't help the fact that her books in general have a problem of starting good and ending bad. I think she needs to step back and slow down and focus on writing good stories because this was not it. At this point even the characters are the same across the books, you can take the names off and I won't be able to tell a difference between Erik, Julian, the Harrow faire lead and the necromancer.

I'm not saying I'll never read KAK again, but this was my first by her and I was so disappointed that I couldn't read past the 84% mark (some slight spoilers but I'm trying to keep it vague). This book had a decent intro and the steam was, while not particularly creative, still quite hot. I loved the MMC, the villain, in this tale. The FMC was unbearable by the end. I wasn't particularly fond of her in the beginning to be fair, but this woman is the worst hypocrite. When I was reading KAK reviews, I was excited because I read that the heroines tend to accept the villainous heroes for who they were. Christine starts to do just that and she is willing to forgive the hero for when he does terrible things in her name to people, including ruining a woman's future WHO HADN'T EVEN DONE ANYTHING TO CHRISTINE??? EXCEPT LIKE STAND IN HER WAY? I don't really care much about that, he's a villain after all, it's the least of what I expected, except that afterwards she becomes so fucking inconsistent. Like she's willing to forgive all the terrible things he does except the one thing that any normal person would forgive? Like I can forgive a girl for setting boundaries like "no more murder" but in this case, the FMC was being ridiculous. Erik deserved better. I don't care what lead to the events hinted in the prologue. I couldn't stand another minute of Christine's pseudo-morality.

This was a bummer. I was really looking forward to a Phantom of the Opera retelling where Christine ends up with Erik, but there were several things that didn't work for me in this.

In many ways this was true to the original novel, with some of the same backstories, lines, and sentiments expressed by the characters. However, I wish the novel had been historical - it's not explained why there's a modern version of Christine, Raoul, and Buquet, amongst others. Are they reincarnated? Why have The Institute at all?

I wasn't a fan of Christine as a character. She was morally wishy-washy, and it seemed like every other chapter she was fainting for some reason or another.

I enjoyed Erik's melodrama, but I didn't like how melodramatic some of the writing was. It didn't fit the modern spin on the tale, and it was a little cheesy.

This was a really fun Phantom retelling! Finally Erik gets his HEA 😭🖤 It was a little silly and melodramatic but I think it was supposed to be. I don’t typical like silly fantastical romances like this one but loving The Phantom of the Opera helped with my enjoyment.

This was fine - I really didn't have any strong feelings about it one way or the other. I think I liked the beginning/lead up more than the end, and Mr. Baltimore became my favorite character which was unexpected, but honestly it read more YA than anything else.

i would've enjoyed this villain romance more if these characters had redeeming qualities and weren't so toxic towards each other, villains can have good traits and learn from history...

”…she didn't want him despite his deformity. She wanted him because of it. He was a monster. A beautiful monster. And he was her beautiful monster.”

”…she had no words for what he said to her. None at all. So she did the only thing she could think of. She hugged him.”

I feel like a small, broken part of my soul is left within the pages of each of this author’s books.

I felt so deeply connected to the characters that there were times it seemed like rather than reading I was witnessing the events play out in real life. I was in the opera house watching the new Christine fight her morality and allow herself to love Erik despite his flaws🥲 I was even there when Raoul was being a —as the Phantom put it— glorified schoolboy😒

Now that my dramatics are over…I LOVED this. As always, Kathryn Ann Kingsley was born to write morally grey characters and villain romances. And as always I still didn’t know wtf was gonna happen in the last chapter. I was freaking out (and crying) up until the last few paragraphs. I’m kinda mad but I’ll let it slide.

One thing I will say about these POTO remakes is that I wish authors would create a NEW story rather than retell the OLD one. Maybe Erik should have learned from his past life and decide to make different choices rather that let it all play out again👀

That said, I felt like this particular retelling of the original, tragic tale was spectacular.

Spice: 🌶🌶🌶/5 (the Phantom had a few tricks up his sleeve…)

Listen, all my friends will tell you I love the phantom of the opera. This creature has been my crush since high-school. One time when I was majorly high I hallucinated he was there 👀. So when I found this book I was so hyped, but my characterization of the phantom was different than the one in this book, so it was a little difficult for me at some parts. It has a interesting concept and it was decent until the part where he assaulted her as she slept. That part lost me, I just don’t enjoy that.
I personally didn’t enjoy the sex scenes, i feel like Erik wouldn’t really be a bdsm daddy😭 but literally weep bc the coochie was so bomb. But that’s just my take on his character. The ghost mechanics in this book were interesting, especially the part where the rest of his body was freezing except for his dick😭😭 the dick is so powerful it cheated death‼️‼️There were parts that I did and didn’t enjoy, but because of that one scene I really didn’t love it as I hoped I would.

UGH.. MY ORIGINAL REVIEW IS GOOOONE 😭😭😭 time to try and rewrite something..
But the feelings I have for this book is all the same I freaking ADORE IT!! Its all I want in a sequel THIS IS MY HEADCANNON ENDING FOR ERIK. I've given a lot of books 5 stars but this so deserves it in my opinion. I loved so much I couldn't wait to reread it too long and picked it right back up.
Hes back from the dead.. kinda.. he's now literally a phantom. And I love it for him it works and gives it more ooomf. 🤌🤌🤌 our boy just got an upgrade!! This made me cry for him at times, I felt his loneliness, distrust and fear of being left all over again. Im a lover of mopey love and he gets the happy ending... here spicy scenes too so thats nice. ❤❤ FINALLY.. NO DANG TWIST OF OOP ONE DIED LUL.
This Christine is a way better fit for Erik. She's a scaredy cat too but not whiney or trying to get away... and has a monster kink. Lol she knows what she wants.
Raoul is the dick here, very annoying and it all of the whiny boy as I seen him as in the original story wanting to drag Christine away from the spotlight and live in mediocrity. And to pout.
I wish we could stay with these characters longer and have more of them but thankfully Mr Balt is there who is set up to be a recurring character with some mystery that I'm very interested to see and learn more about him..
Im still gonna miss Erik but its a satisfying end to his story.

I had a good time with this one. It wasn't the best book I have ever read, but I loved seeing The Phantom get his HEA and I was enjoying the spice too.

I wish this was narrated by a woman though.

Beautiful. God, this was beautiful.

I never watched or read The Phantom of the Opera, so I was sceptical, and only started reading because it's by Kathryn Ann Kingsley, and no one writes villain MMCs as perfect as her. But I was hooked almost immediately. It didn't even matter that I don't know the original story. I'm sure there were moments that would be even better if you do, but as it was for me, I understood everything and thoroughly enjoyed this story.

Erik is written so well and I loved his different sides. Both dominant and soft. Beautiful and ugly. And, of course, a lunatic.

Their relationship progressed perfectly well-timed. I love very slow slow burns, and this felt kind of like a best of both worlds, as it wasn't even that slow, but still so well paced, leaving enough room for all those great smut scenes (and man, they were great!).

Now onto spoiler territory...
