Does Cupid have a nice list? Never mind. Forget it. I'm breaking up with Valentine's Day.

It started innocently enough with a harmless inquiry about a cute guy at a coffee shop. The goal was to get back into the romance game. The search turned into a social media frenzy. #DesperatelySeekingDane was not available. Talk about a buzzkill.

Just when I thought things couldn't become more dramatic, a TV production company reached out to me as a last-minute contestant in a dating contest because of my five minutes of online fame. It was an instant yes because one of the three bachelors was a major movie star and my lifelong crush.

Here's the I'm matched with the third-place prize, a daredevil hockey player I can't stand. Let's just say we have a brief but storied history involving shrill whistles, spilled coffee, and a bloody incident in an elevator.

However, it turns out the date is only the opening act. We end up in each other's debt, resulting in a meet-the-parents situation. But we kind of hit it off. As things heat up between us, sparks fly and the ice begins to melt. Can I be falling for the guy I loathe?

This is a clean, sweet, closed-door hockey romcom with lots of sweet kisses and a happily ever after.

3 🌟 REVIEW

"I leave it all on the rink: blood, sweat, but no tears because there’s no crying in hockey."

Stupid Cupid is my first Ellie Hall read even though I own a bunch of her books! I'm the worst about buying books then not reading them!!

This is a great story idea with great banter and good writing. I just needed more! The story could've used more fleshing out, and so could all the characters. Like the skating conversation when Delaney and Hayden get to know each other - their conversation could've been included, so we got to be part of them falling in love. There was such a build-up of Bently, but then he had one line, and that's it. The tension could've been built up into the climax of the story. All of a sudden, Delaney's crochet business is booming, and she quits her airport job. We're just told it's happening, but that could've been a whole process. And Hayden plays in the Stanley Cup game, but we don't get to read about any of it?! There were just too many missed opportunities that led to a jumpy and jarring pacing and not enough oomph to the story. I couldn't connect with the characters, so I wasn't invested in their story. All in all, the bones were there, but I was disappointed by the lack of story. I did enjoy the pop cultural references! They made me giggle!!

Super sweet and fun!

This book was sassy, full of fun banter, and had great growth for both characters. I loved the enemies to lovers vibes and the unique personalities of each character. Of course our side characters were awesome and made the story even more fun

Maybe it was just me but sometimes I struggled with following the characters thought processes, they felt a little jumpy. That only slightly distracted me from the story (thus the 4 stars).

💋Sweet kisses

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone

– this is told from Delaney & Hayden’s points of view

– there are a few mentions of blood from hockey related injuries

– Hayden’s brother passed away in the line of duty (past event); his sister grew up with cerebral palsy; his parents aren’t the best

Review:

I enjoyed this quick and funny romance read! Delaney & Hayden were cute to watch as they went into the process of falling for each other. I loved that Delaney was a bit of a hopeless romantic, even though the accidental social media chaos ended unfavorably for her. I liked that Hayden knew he was attracted to Delaney, even when she was trying to push him away by being off-putting, and was interested in more even though he didn’t really think she’d give him a chance with their accidental encounters piling up. I loved the scenes when they started the show and traveled around Los Angeles a bit in their downtime. I especially loved the scene(s) where Delaney stood up for Hayden & when she finally chose him to be hers.

Summary:

Delaney only wanted to try again at finding love, but when she inquires about a cute guy in front of her in line at the local coffee shop, things get thrown way out of proportion and Delaney accidentally becomes a social media star. And to make things worse, the guy wasn’t even interested let alone available. Now Delaney can’t even do her job without someone stopping her to talk about the #DesperatelySeekingDane debacle. If Delaney could, she’d fire cupid for clearly missing the mark. But there is one ray of hope from all this. A TV dating show wants Delaney to be one of it’s stars and one of the known leading men happens to be her life-long movie star crush. She’s not about to get another chance to catch his attention, so Delaney gives the show an immediate yes to the offer. But when she sees the other contestants and it gets down to the finale, Delaney is sorely regretting having entered…

Hayden just switched hockey teams and fans from all over want a bit of his attention. But when he happens upon Delaney, more than once, she makes it clear that she wants nothing to do with him. Hayden finds Delaney’s distaste refreshing from the gold diggers and fame seekers and wishes he could convince her to give him a chance. When he’s unexpectedly signed up for a TV dating show, Hayden finds his wish granted. Though she probably still wouldn’t want to give him a chance with her eyes on a certain movie star, Hayden and Delaney are paired up as a match instead of her desired bachelor. Which means they’ll have to go on a date together to be aired on TV. Hayden is certainly thanking cupid for this intervention…

Kisses only.

Wow! There was a lot packed into this book (except much of a plot, which I wouldn’t really call it enemies to lovers) yet there is still so much missing. We have forced proximity (elevator breaks down), sunshine/grumpy, reality dating show, and bad boy reforms. It’s a sweet book without a lot of conflict. I always find it interesting how an author will try to create a TV dating show. I don’t know how a show that takes place live in one night could get a lot of viewers. Also, only six people on the show doesn’t seem to make for good TV. Other than that, there were some time jumps which left me disappointed. The MMC’s team wins the Stanley Cup and we only know about it because of one line and their relationship moved to love in what felt like one date but maybe was over more time???

It’s hate at first sight for this pair. But a little reality TV intervention and some judicious bargaining might give Delaney and Hayden the chance to get to know one another and learn that there are a lot more fun emotions they could indulge in. This was a super sweet quick little book. It sets the stage and introduces us to the Knights organization as well as this feuding pair. I can’t wait to see what the future brings.

This book is absolutely the sweetest and most entertaining story! It's an enemies to more, Valentine’s Day, hockey romantic comedy. The way it's written is why I love romance books. Amazing banter, family feels and fun with plenty of sparks. . Highly recommend.

this was a very wholesome love story. very quick, not too indepth with character development. this would be considered a hockey romance but not a lot of hockey, not even a lot of mention of the team, except they wanted the MMC to settle down and be more of a team player. The book itself is a short one, only 166 pages, so not too many story and character details.
it had a cute concept, there was a Valentine theme dating reality show that both the MMC and fmc are on, and of course they have crossed paths before this and don't like each other, but then are forced together for this tv show, and then there feelings suddenly change.
I would recommend it if you want a clean, quick Valentine love story.

cute but fast

This book had some sweet moments, but the pace was too rushed. There were several potential storylines that could have been great if they had been given more time to develop.

Delaney Houghton is on a romance cleanse. She quit cold turkey, certain that Cupid has a vendetta against her. Afterall, her ex-boyfriend broke up with her on Valentine’s Day the previous year, and then she became infamous due to the #DesperatelySeekingDane viral social media debacle.

Now it’s a week to yet another Valentine’s Day and Delaney’s still trying to avoid, not only being recognised, but also Cupid’s arrow. She’s freezing on the Arrivals sidewalk of the Eppley International Airport in Omaha, Nebraska, keeping traffic moving as a Ground Transportation Safety team member, when grey-eyed Hayden Savage appears, choosing to ignore her and the whistle she’s blowing.

From this not-so-meet cute, they go on to a second involving spilled coffee, and there’s even a bloody incident in a stalled elevator. Then they meet yet again as contestants on “The Romance Match”, a TV dating game show, unaware of the other’s participation. Delaney had been approached last minute by the production company due to her five minutes of fame, and she’d agreed on hearing one of the three bachelors was to be her lifelong crush, the actor Bentley Delacruz. Hayden had agreed to satisfy his agent and his team that he was going to stop putting his future, and theirs, in danger with his behaviour.

This is Book 1 in the “Nebraska Knights” series by Ellie Hall, but can be read as a standalone. It’s told from both Delaney’s and Hayden’s points of view, and is a clean, closed-door romance with lots of sweet kisses and an HEA.

The main characters:
- Hayden is the newest hockey player in town, a midseason trade from the Caroline Storm to the Nebraska Knights. As an adrenaline-junky high adventurer, Hayden is into BASE jumping, just as he and his brother had been . Apart from his sister JoJo, who has CP (Cerebral Palsy), Hayden doesn’t have much of a family; his mother is self-centered and his stepfather is a big wig, and they both put money above everything else. He never knew his father.
- Pompom whistle-blowing Delaney is into crocheting, with her “The Crochet Shop” online store as a side hustle.

Hayden is going on the list of my favourite book boyfriends. He was so sweet and caring, and the way he loved Delayne, not despite all of her quirks, but because of them, is beautiful. He also loves, protects, cares for and supports his sister. It goes without saying, of course, that Hayden’s also hot and fit, confident, and has a quick wit and great sense of humour.

This book was a quick read/listen, with the audiobook being only 4 hours and 15 minutes long. It was a sweet and humorous story with some witty banter between the main characters. Delaney and Hayden were both loving, gentle and kind, and they made a cute couple. I also admired Delaney for never losing hope, being a hopeless romantic at heart. There were two epilogues, both providing HEAs.

Such a fun Valentine story. I loved it! It’s a great read for Valentine’s, or any other time. The story is cute and funny. The characters were great. It was fun to watch them go from antagonism to “heart sparkles”, aka love. Their meeting was so good. A fantastic antagonistic meet-cute. I liked that Delaney had a job that was something we don’t usually see in books. And Hayden…well, hockey. Enough said. The characters were great. I was invested in them right away. Delaney is the kind of person I want to be friends with. “My grandmother says I have a big personality, and my ex said I was ‘too much.’” Meanwhile, Hayden (aka “Hockey Hottie Nottie”, according to Delaney) is filling a hole in his life with physical risk, but avoiding the emotional kind. “I’ve closed myself to the L-word or even the R-word, love and relationships respectively. Nothing and no one will change that.” Poor Delaney unintentionally ended up embarrassed and viral for asking about a cute guy at the coffee shop. Hayden got himself into trouble with his hockey team for risky behaviour. Both went on a dating show to repair their situations. With a few negative interactions already under their belts, they were dismayed to find each other on the same show. “Perhaps Cupid has an enemy that’s trying to sabotage me. I’m looking at you, Leprechaun.” The epilogues (yes, multiple) are so cute. There are elements of this story that address death, grief, risky behaviour, and cerebral palsy. This is a clean romance with no harsh language.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done to get someone’s romantic attention?!  Can’t think of anything, well our girl Delaney has you beat anyways!  All she wanted is the name of the cutie’s (that she saw in the coffee shop) name, NBD!  Only it went viral!

Embarrassing and extremely awkward, the girl already was contemplating swearing off Valentine’s Day and now the nail has been put in that coffin!  Her accidental fame has landed her a spot on a love match show, where the possibility of being matched with her celebrity crush is the only glimmering heart sparkle that could redeem the doomed holiday… All the while she has ruffled the feathers of hockey hotshot, Hayden, that she has some random run-ins with!

Hayden, couldn’t care less about Delaney or any other woman as he, too, has sworn off love as it doesn’t seem to be his lot in life!  He would rather live life on the edge, but that recklessness has caused a stir amongst his new teammates and coach!  They insist that he tame his wild ways, find an anchor…his agent lands him a spot on the same love match show!  This is bound to get even more awkward than a random whistle ringing in your ears (IYKYK)!

Ellie Hall continues to write some of the most well-rounded novellas out there!  While first appearances it doesn’t seem possible, but she makes it appear effortless!  The chemistry of the two leads is fun, subtle and oh so witty!  Caveman culture (you’ll find out soon enough)!  Here for it all!  So much to read in such a small package but can’t wait to read the sequel to this one in the summer!

Just the type of story I expect from Ellie Hall, fun, lots of humor and wonderful characters. This story starts of where the H Hayden Savage and h Delaney Houghton keep unexpectedly meeting from the airport to coffee shop and finally a hockey game. Then both of them separately get asked to be part of a TV dating game show The Romance Match. Delaney only agrees to be on the show because an actor she has a crush on Bentley Delacruz is one of the contestants. She has no idea that Hayden is also one of the male contestants.

Hayden had no idea that his hockey teammates and coaches set him up to be a contestant on the show until he realized he was being introduced as The Hockey Hunk. When the audience votes, instead of first prize, the trip to Cobo or second prize, a weekend in wine country, Delaney wins the third prize, a Day in LA to spend with Hayden not Bentley Delacruz.

Sparks continue to fly between Hayden and Delaney as they go on their date. She starts to see that he's not the Hockey player stereotype she thought he was. She's had some bad experiences with dating in the past and had decided that Cupid wasn't going to mess her up this Valentine's Day. Can Delaney give Hayden a chance to let her see he can really be her perfect Romance Match?

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

Wow! What a fun book
This book was so fun I had a hard time putting it down. It’s an enemies to lovers story, so you know they’ll get together, but the story is so much fun. Delaney is in a fight with cupid. Cupid has let her down, first with her ex breaking up her on Valentine’s Day and then with her becoming a social media sensation, not in a good way, when she expresses interest in a man she meets in a coffee shop. So, she has sworn off cupid and romance. But the question is, has Cupid sworn off her? When Hayden, who has also sworn off romance, first meets Delaney she is furiously blowing her whistle trying to get him to move on at the airport pickup zone. The second meeting is in the coffee shop and results in Hayden getting his coffee spilt on him. Imagine what happens when they discover that they are contestants on the same reality show with the chance of being paired together by the audience. Mix in base jumping, a snobby movie star, an ice rink, a large number of whistles, and you have a fun, enchanting story sure to please. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

Looking for a short and sweet Valentine’s romcom? Check out Stupid Cupid by Ellie Hall. This is a closed door, hate-to-love hockey romcom–it’s the cutest story!

Hayden is the newest hockey player in town and he’s a force to be reckoned with. Not only is he an adrenaline junkie, but he’s hot, handsome, flirtatious, and confident. I love the way he clashes at his very first meeting with Delaney, the pom pom whistle blowing heroine. Every meeting after (and there are plenty) is full of the electric zip and magnetic pop of a hatred bursting with attraction. They are such a dynamic couple and it was so much fun to experience their story through a series of accidental and coincidental run-ins, exploding with witty banter and humorous lines and situations.

I adored every moment of this sweet story.

Content: mild romance

Going viral on social media isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. One disastrous Valentine’s Day after another leads to Delaney’s most embarrassing moment. Surely cupid must have it out for her. An invitation to appear on a dating show may be the only way to get past her five minutes of fame and find someone.

Stupid Cupid is a stand-alone romcom. While it is set around Valentine’s Day, it’s enjoyable for any time of year. (Who’s to say? I read Christmas books in Summer.) The book is closed-door but there are still plenty of sweet and swoony moments.

What a fun little Valentine’s treat! Stupid Cupid is on the short side at around 150 pages but Ellie Hall still found a way to squeeze in all the good stuff. The storyline does move along quickly but at a steady pace. The MCs have their backgrounds well explained so readers aren’t left guessing. Both characters are going through somewhat messy times in their lives but the universe (cupid, perhaps) finds ways to draw them together on more than one occasion. If you are looking for a sweet, hockey romance but just don’t know where to start, Stupid Cupid is a great option.

Stupid Cupid was a nice surprise release. Although this is currently a stand-alone, there are a few side characters that I’d love to see pop up again in the future. Can’t wait to see what Ellie Hall has next for her readers.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A fun Valentine's day story about two people in their own worlds that overlap unexpectedly. Great characters, sweet romance, humor and family combine to make a book that is delightful and hopeful.

I confess that I was apprehensive about reading this because I am not a hockey fan. But guess what? While this is a story including a guy who plays hockey professionally, the hockey faded into the background as I discovered what an awesome guy he was. The main female character crochets, and I am not particularly interested in crochet. I discovered she was a positive, delightful person that I was glad to "get to know."

Such a positive book started out complex and unhappy, and ended with a beautiful ending. In between? A whole lot of fun! I LOVED it and especially the epilogues!

Okay, this book was like a sugar rush—sweet, fun, and over before I fully got to enjoy it. The banter? Chef’s kiss. The premise? Totally chaotic in the best way. But the execution? Kinda like skipping the best scenes in a rom-com montage.

I wanted more—more buildup, more tension, more actual falling in love instead of just being told it happened. Delaney and Hayden had all the ingredients for an amazing enemies-to-lovers romance, but some key moments were just... missing. Also, Bently got all this hype and then had, what, one line? Rude.

That said, I still had fun! The pop culture references made me giggle, and Delaney’s chaotic energy was chef’s kiss relatable. If you want a light, breezy, Valentine’s Day read with a reality TV twist, it’s worth a shot. Just don’t expect too much depth!

Loved it!!! I needed some Ellie Hall! If you haven’t read her books stop what you’re doing and go grab one! I might have way too many in my wishlist lol. This quote makes me love her even more…”while thinking about crochet designs. I learned the needlecraft at my grandmother’s side” I too learned from my gma!!!
Stupid Cupid,is about Delaney no longer looking for love. But she keeps bumping into this handsome hockey hunk. Can you believe she is even matched up with him on a dating game? Will Cupids arrow strike his target with Delaney and Hayden? Before you even finish this novel, you’ll be reaching for another Ellie book…like chips you can’t eat just one!

Valentine’s Love-

3.75 stars - Hayden is a hockey stud that just got traded to Omaha. Delaney is the victim of viral video. She also works at the airport. She ends up meeting Hayden when trying to get to move him to move from a tow zone. They keep bumping into each other and end up on the same reality dating show. They need to figure out if love is a risk worth taking.

I really liked the pairing. They each have a lot of issues. But they seemed to become a couple almost instantly. As anti relationship as both were, I think there should have been more friendship building before they loved each other. I like that this was a clean romance with no third act breakup. Overall, a nice fast read with a fun Valentine’s theme and lots of heart sparkles.

Give her a whistle!

Best meet cute ever! She has a big personality- the kind that goes viral and gets her attention everywhere she goes. He’s a hockey player with an attitude and a penchant for thrill seeking like clandestine BASE jumping. After several unexpected meetings they get picked to be contestants on the reality show Romance Match. This has all the best elements of a rom/com, great meet cute, unexpected meetings, stuck in an elevator, wicked stepfather, aversion to Cupid and dating and an explosive first kiss. Add in a hot hockey player and great found family and you have a winner.

𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀: Cupid has been forgiven.

💭 Delaney has sworn off all things romance and Cupid. After being dumped on Valentine's day, and then a VIRAL fail of attempting to "put herself out there again". Until she is presented with the opportunity to go out with her celebrity crush.

Hayden is the resident bad boy on his professional hockey team. His PR manager is demanding he changes his lifestyle.

After a couple chance encounters, Hayden + Delaney find themselves spending lots of time together. I loved their banter 🤭 the fact that they had this draw to one and other but refused to acknowledge it.

This is such a sweet & fun read-- perfect for some fun Valentine's goodness!

Stupid Cupid

Such a cute and funny story about a professional hockey player, Hayden, and his whistle blowing nemesis from the airport, Delaney. Both of these characters seem to have their quirks about love and romance. Delaney was dumped by her ex boyfriend on Valentine’s Day. Then she had a social media faux pas about a guy who was engaged. Hayden had his own problems trying to deal with his dad, mom, and stepdad not being family oriented, as well as the loss of his brother, which was his final straw. Read the story of how these two keep running into each other until they finally end up on a television reality show together.

Oh my gosh! A book set in my home state - this NEVER happens! And, we do have a junior hockey team in Omaha whose name is like the Knights in Ellie’s book. Although, this sweet, sassy heroine, grumpy hero story is so much more. Delaney is mad at Cupid for lots of reasons when Hayden gets traded to Omaha’s hockey team and seems to be teasing or making fun of her at every turn. Their story is sweet with heartache from their pasts. They are paired up and keep meeting in the most awkward settings. They have a unique chemistry and I loved the comparisons and the puns. This was a very fun story with serious undertones that were handled perfectly.

Cutest Couple!

This is book 1 in the Nebraska Knights Hockey Romance series. I adored this enemies to lovers story. Delaney is feisty and had been burned in love before and swore off Valentine’s Day. Haedyn felt his family was cursed in love. They incidentally met at the airport where Delaney worked and it was more of a meet-hate. Both end up on a matchmaking tv show and get matched together. This was a rom-com novel that I actually wasn’t sure if the lead characters would end up together but don’t worry there is a happily ever after. Can’t wait for the next book in this series!

Sassy & Sweet

Stupid Cupid by Ellie Hall is funny, sweet and romantic. It’s book one of the Nebraska Knights Holiday Hockey Romance series.

After some embarrassing dating mishaps, Delaney has sworn off guys. Hayden doesn’t believe in love because of his past, but it all changes the first time Delaney and Hayden encounter each other. They just can’t see it yet.

I just love this little novella! Delaney has such a quirky, fun personality and Hayden has a reserved, sweet, loyal personality. I love Hayden’s sister too. I recommend for a great storyline with a clean romance and a HEA.
