I only got about 1/4 of the way through what seems like in interesting concept. However it reads like a 5 year old and a computer tried to write a book. There are jumps in time from one event to the next with little or no explanation for it. The story is less told and more explained. It creates a story that is hard to get into and if you manage it you soon get shoved right back out.
This is a book that's hard to rate. It had so much potential, but something felt like they never came together. I'm not even sure on classifying this as LitRPG or Cultivation despite it having both elements, but falls into neither category.
Tian is seeking immortality and hits a snag which leads her to being transported from a Cultivation world to one having Game mechanics. However she finds information that could still help on on her path and the book makes for the story that follows.
The writing is good and author keeps it simple and moving at a good pace. However despite page time spent on character development, they still felt incomplete and I found it hard to connect with any which is a huge let down. I also hated the alternating flashbacks as they didn't really add to the current situation and just broke up the flow. The book would not suffer at all if all those segments were taken out making them pointless.
There is lack of cultivating and the game mechanics (level ups and skills/feats) just felt random. The plot progresses but the backstory that lends credence and weight to the plot is missing, which dilutes the motivation of the characters. They all felt superficial.
The level system is overly complex and feels useless. The feeling of character growth is non-existent. The flashbacks are boring and just break up the story. The side characters are stereotypical and not very interesting. All in all, it is just lacking in all ways.
Grabbed this audiobook because I love the narrator and have enjoyed the supposed genre (turns out it is not a litrpg at all), but come to find out the book is terrible. To be fair the first 90% of the book is terrible. The last 10% is good enough but only goes to show how off-the-mark the writing style is. The book starts with what is supposed to be a high-intensity moment, one where you spend the rest of the book getting the back story while the MC spends the book grappling with the bizarre repercussions of her actions. In the climax, you begin to understand some of the motivations and as a reader you realize the author just flubbed up by not giving you any reason to be interested in the character at the beginning of the book where it belonged.
TLDR version of the review - NOT WORTH MY TIME, CERTAINLY NOT WORTH YOUR TIME. THERE IS SOMETHING HERE IN THE END BUT THE JUICE IS NOT WORTH THE SQUEEZE. THE GOOD READS RATINGS ARE INFLATED BY BOTS. READ THE REVIEWS.
The story was different than the standard LitRPG. There was no XP gained but new skills kept getting used, unlocked, and levels gained. There were several things that bothered me about it. A character would start to use a skill and then say the name of the skill as if saying the name of the skill would activate it but it was already used before speaking it.
The author kept using the same phrases over and over again. If one character uses it, that's fine, it is part of their personality. But if all of the characters use it from different planes of existence, that's just lazy writing. With how often the author used "...narrowed their eyes..." I'm surprised there weren't more cross-eyed characters.
Don't even get me started on "however." I lost track with how many times the author used "however." It was a lot. They could have used different words/phrases that meant the same thing. A simple search on thesaurus.com got me five "strongest" matches; nevertheless, nonetheless, notwithstanding, still, and yet. Eight "strong" matches were found; all the same, be that as it may, but, despite, for all that, in spite of that, just the same, and regardless. There were even "weak" matches that could have been used instead of "however;" after all, anyhow, howbeit, on the other hand, per contra, though, withal, and without regard to.
All in all, it was an interesting story despite it's flaws. I probably will not continue the series even though I DID finish this book.
Cultivation stories of this kind aren't my favorite kind of LitRPG. I much prefer the ones with actual stats, levels, skills and the like. This book has very little of that. The character starts out at the top of her game, and after being exiled, only moves up a few levels overall. However, the entire story is based on cultivation, and the fact that this girl can't do it properly since her method doesn't work in this new world. That's all well and good, but you could remove all the cultivation stuff entirely, and to be honest, I doubt it would change the story one iota. For folks that like cultivation stories of all kinds, you'll probably enjoy this book. For folks like me though, who really prefer (what I call real LitRPG), this book won't do much for you. The story isn't a bad one, so if you're looking for a story where the main character has to adapt and overcome, then it's not a bad tale, but don't bother picking it up if you're purchasing it strictly for it's LitRPG elements like I did, you'll be disappointed.
A great first volume of a very intriguing series. I loved Tian as the MC. She’s dense and funny, smart, kind, and totally bad ass. As an OP character from the beginning, she’s remarkably vulnerable and relatable. Her depressing backstory paired with her supremely powerful current role works quite well together. She’s a great character of depth and power. The side characters are also very compelling.
Likable, original, and cute female MC yib a great formal to see how we got a great story. The informative chs into the MC past really show her growth over younger self and how see became who she is really can’t wait to see what we’ll learn in the next book.
A warrior seeking longevity and power fails, and during their escape they come across an oppressed people. Here they may find what they were looking for, and themselves.
It’s a boring book I mean its just Wuxi’s tropes in a litrpg just go on Wuxia world and read or go for litrpg this book doesn’t work it’s just objectively bad
