One young man's journey to master the art of magic...
Jack wants nothing more than to be a mage. He trains by himself every day, cultivating mana and focusing on building his internal magic. All with the hope of one day joining a mage guild. Except one day, Jack encounters a strange object in the forest. It is the heart of a dungeon. Somehow, he absorbs the dungeon's heart into his body. Before he knows what to do, he encounters a peculiar man by the name of Lachlan Woe. He is a mage of great power, he says, and he is in need of an apprentice.
So, Jack ventures to the Shadow Tower, which Lachlan Woe calls his home. There, Jack will begin his studies and train to become a mage.
It soon becomes clear that Jack's powers are not those of regular mages. After absorbing the dungeon heart, his potential seems boundless, and even his mysterious mentor is in awe. Even so, Jack must work hard to learn exactly what his limits are, if there are indeed any limits at all to his magic.
All the while, Jack will explore the Shadow Tower, meet its bizarre inhabitants, and discover the secret origin of the tower and its master.
Join Jack as he embarks on the Path of the Mage and digs deeper into the mystery of Lachlan Woe and the Shadow Tower.
This book is good and I’m continuing on with the series. I just feel that it doesn’t suck me into the story very much. It’s good and I like the story, I just can’t seem to get sucked into the story world like I usually do with books I really like. There’s also a few things the author does with their writing that I’m not a fan of. Some minor editing errors are easy to overlook. But the author uses exclamation marks! too often when the characters are talking! It feels like half the conversations have someone making one or more exclamations! I don’t mind seeing it sometimes, but it feels like way too much excitement for what’s happening. It makes me think the people are yelling in excitement over everything (like a toddler hopped up on sugar). Even with these issues the story is interesting enough that I’m continuing on to the next book in the series.
This story is paint brushed with imagenachion, insight, and many unexpected displays, a very fertil continuous turns and twists of plotting all along the way!
It was a refreshing journey, all along as I walked along the pathway of this story !
It kept adding very fascinating and curious information that inhensed and strengthened my curiosity of the characters !
The storyline was well crafted to display the characters very well !
Recommend this book because you keep trying to figure out just what kind of person these people are and where it takes them and me as I found this book non-predictable for the most part !
I kept reading just to see how new developments would play out !
My hat is off to this author for keeping me guessing and following to see new and unexpected things throughout this very well thought out book
In my opinion, this is an excellent way to start a series. Now I do agree with some of the other reviews on audible that the story may be slow, bland and boring but it's an introduction to the series. So everything they did in this book will result in a better story for future books to come so we can all skip the fillers in the next books. So I have to applaud the author for taking the time to do it. Also, the first couple of chapters were a little sluggish but after that it really picked up. This series has a lot of potential and I look forward to seeing what's improved in the next book. As always, the author and narrator did a fantastic job with this book. So kudos to the both of them. 4.5/5 stars
Overall, a good read. I did feel that typical plot formulas were being followed, but it was still well written. The flow and pacing worked. There aren't really much in the way of bad guys. This is mostly a setup for the rest of the series.
The main characters are each interesting in their own way. The outside world has LOTS of room for plot developments.
This book is worth a read, just don't expect lots of action or a lot of originality. This is a been there done that story done well enough to be interesting.
Interesting premise, I’m excited to see where this goes.
Jack was remarkably copacetic to find out that he had been granted phenomenal cosmic powers, and there don’t appear to be any limitations other than those he imposes on himself. He is so focused on becoming a mage that he doesn’t seem to quite realize that he’s no longer human, and that he can suck a mage dry, if he so chooses.
It is meant to be the study of magic in a secretive, mysterious tower. It is a overly drawn out, boring mess filled with flat characters and obvious conclusions. The time it takes to get to any meaningful story is just wasted on pointless drivel. You never connect to the characters, so the day-to-day is just a waste. This was a poorly executed idea.
Easy read but it did not captivate me. The main reason is the lack of an antagonist! Very weak drive because of this. I almost left it due to lack of interest. I like the protagonists but I had little investment in them. Best I can give is 3 stars.
This is the fantasy of every man, to be a poor hard working young man and fall into a dream mage job, complete with beer and a young pretty woman. Love women, but you can store beer in the fridge. Beer don't mind if you have two of them opened at the same time. You can give a male friend one of your beers.it's
A twist on the dungeon core genre. Takes an appreciation of reading about people training and learning how to control their abilities. So it’s not all action, action, action. But there is action aplenty. I was bouncing in my chair more than once while reading. This is a home run as far as I am concerned.
I had this book for so long, I think it's time I get it off my backlog.
This story feels too YA ad immature. There are a lot of little parts that are interesting, and combined would have made a great story, but the author's execution makes me not want to read the sequels, or any of their other works.
I enjoyed the interplay between the characters, the fun of learning as explorations of powers and abilities grew, and the delight in completion of each challenge. I'm looking forward to the expansion of this new world.
Wow, this a surprisingly good refreshing read. Coming off another DB King book series, I felt a little empty. I loved every bit of this book so far. I can’t wait to binge read the rest of the series!
Lachlan mentors Jack and melinda ,how there different magic is and how they grow. You won't want to miss how Jack learns how to use magic. Fast paced book I couldn't put down. Loved this book.
The eonly critique I have is that it didn't have any enemies or suspense. Everything was far too "pkeasant" and there wasn't failure. I'm sure we'll see more in the next book.
I couldn't finish this, I tried. The conversations do not flow naturally, everything just feels very simple. I'm sure others can find enjoyment here but its just not for me.
I've read a few of these fantasy books a pretty much they all have the same format but these is the first for me. I don't want to spoil the book for you so I can't say much. BUT! if you're looking for something a little different give this book a read.
i NEED to find out how this goes! its a simple read, yet fundamentally intriguing! the author baits you with just the right bits of info and i'm absolutely salivating!
It went from I have no power to I have some power to I'm super powerful in almost no time at all. The progression path for learning their new magic abilities was way to fast and way too easy.
I liked this story. It's interesting that the characters were all still learning by the end of the book, including ones you'd not expect. Very well done.
I really enjoyed this story and the whole dynamic of this story. I’m looking forward to seeing where the author takes us for the next book in this series.
