Broken

Rate this book
It only takes one mistake to change a life forever.

Elden has been called many things - broken, impulsive, lazy, and telekinetic, among other less polite terms. A strangely gifted young man raised by strict disciplinarians, Elden has struggled to live up to his family's expectations ever since he can remember. On the eve of his brother's induction into Justice training Elden faces a series of crucial choices which will determine his fate in ways he would never have imagined.

This 20,000-word novella is a prequel to the Forsaken Lands novel series and contains a significant level of explicit language and descriptions of substance abuse.

I received an electronic copy of this story in return for a review.

I was disappointed by this story for two reasons. First, the length. This story is quite short and doesn't feel finished. It tells the story of an addicted boy who comes of age in a family who doesn't want him and then runs away from home. And then it ends, which leads to the second problem, there isn't enough of the story for me to actually care about about the main character. With the character development given, he comes across as a hopeless druggie with no redeeming qualities. I was intrigued enough by what was there to keep reading to find out more -- but the story ended.

Interesting start, but not a complete story on its own.

Broken is a story about a gifted young man who lives a life of abuse in many ways. This isn't a happily ever after fairy tale, instead a realistic showcase of a troubled soul with a twist of fantasy. My only complaint is that this story leaves me wanting more.
