King of Prey Book One

In a place where realms combine and portals open passages to the unknown, a prophecy speaks of fertility being restored to King Kabril's people through the taking of his mate. The prophecy neglects to mention she lacks something vital to his kind--wings. Kabril, king of the Buteos Regalis, has no interest in taking a human mate. His kind believe humans are dirty, vile creatures who rely on machines to lift them into the air. The last place he wants to go in search of his mate is the realm of Earth, but he's left no choice. Never did he expect to find love on a planet with one moon, people who lack wings and a stubborn vixen who makes his heart soar. When he does, he fears the truth about who and what he truly is will steal it away. Little does he know his enemies fully intend on doing the taking.

King of Prey is book one in the King of Prey series by Mandy M. Roth. This was my first book by Mandy Roth and now I’m wondering what the heck took me so long!

Giulio Maria Berrutil.:

King Kabril, King of the Buteos Regalis is a bird shifter, specifically a hawk. His kingdom has been suffering. There have been no new children born in years. The streets no longer carry the sounds of children’s laughter. Morale is low, people are unhappy. It is prophesied that King Kabril must go to the human realm of earth and he will find his mate there. After he is accepted by his mate, the rest of his kingdom will once again bear young. Humans are looked down upon by Kabril’s people. For one thing, they don’t have wings. Another is that their life spans are so short. But if this is the sacrifice Kabril must make, he will go, along with his trusted advisor, Sachin.

Rayna Vogel is a photographer. She loves to photograph wildlife, specifically birds. She has lost her grandmother and has sold her home. She decided to be neighborly and take over a dish to welcome them. She can’t believe these two beautiful men she sold the house to. Especially the one named Kabril. There’s just something about him.

Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis):

Thus begins Kabril’s somewhat hilarious attempts to woo Rayna human style. He falls for her right away and knows she’s the one he wants, but she has to fall in love with him as well.

“I choose this one. She is most pleasing to the eye and…will birth fine sons. She will make a perfect queen.”

At the same time, danger from Kabril and Sachin’s realm has followed them to earth and this will put Rayna in danger if it is learned that she is important to him.

winged man:

I loved this short book. This is my first avian shifter story but no matter what sort of shifter it is, there is something so sexy about beautiful wings popping out of a man’s back. Kabril and Rayna’s courtship was so cute but what will happen when she finds out that Kabril is holding back some very important details about himself from her. That he’s not human at all. Will Rayna accept him as her mate and save his kingdom? I can’t wait to read book two, Sachin’s story. I definitely want to continue the series and hope to read much more of this author’s work.

Spoilery review...

This was free on Amazon. So I thought why the hell not?
I liked it, I've never read a bird shifter book before and it was cute.
Hero was gone for the heroine from the moment he meets her and some of the things he said was cute and had me laughing. I liked how he wooed her even though he thought she wasn't his mate, the heroine was the typical heroine. I don't think I have to say what I meant by that.

There were things that bothered me, like the whole kingdom had a harem of women. For a moment I thought the hero was going to sleep with them but he didn't. He disbanded the harem once he got back to his kingdom.
One of the server woman was a member of this harem but he never paid attention and never slept this woman she didn't caused drama but it made the heroine jealous.
He was a devoted hero. I actually liked him a lot. He was so soft toward his heroine. It was funny how he would become a pu**y cat when she glared at him.
This quote was when he asked the heroine to marry.

Uh.. umm, Rayna, would you do me the honor of being my ball and chain?"
“Ball and chain? Heaven help me. My man thinks that’s a compliment.” “Be my chick?” he asked, hopeful he got it right this time. Rayna laughed harder. Kabril shifted awkwardly on one knee. “My sexy significant other?”

I won't bother with the rest of the series because after I did my research on the safety of the rest of the books either they weren't safe or the blurb mention that the heroes were manwhores. It's a shame really because I was looking forward to reading King/hero's advisor's book. He seemed interesting in this book but after searching I found out that the book is not safe for me.

~Safe.
~No mention when is the last time the hero slept with the harem but it was way before he met the heroine. Like I said he's been devoted from the moment he met her.
~No OW drama.

4 1/2 stars, This is one great shifter romance. I will always hold a special place in my heart for paranormal romance, it was my first jump into romance an all I read for years. After several years of only reading PR I moved to other genre's and seemed to move on from PR. But it was never because I don't love this genre, I always will I think I read so much that I got burned out for a while and then just plain couldn't find any good paranormal romance books. I always keep an eye out for a good paranormal book and when I saw the description of this book I new I couldn't not buy it and read it right away.

Kabril is the king of the Buteos Regalis and a shifter. for years the pregnancy and childbirth have dwindled in his people but the prophecy states that when he mates his people will again have children. Hating the prophecy and the gods who tell him what to do. What is even worse is finding out hat his mate is human. When Kabril agree's to find his mate for his people his trusted advisor and friend accompanies him to earth to find his mate. What he finds instead if Rayna, a beautiful human who captures his attention and makes him wish that she was his mate.

When Rayna knew it was time to sell her grandmothers house she never would have guessed the buyer would have been anything like Kabril, he is beyond attractive and very kind. The more time they spend together the more Rayna begins to fall in love with Kabril and wish for more. Kabril knows that Rayna is not his mate but the more time they spend together the more he knows that he no longer cares he has fallen in love and plans to make her his queen. As Kabril begins to woo Rayna their enemies begin to make trouble and make themselves known, just when Rayna's life may be in danger Kabril finds out that his friend and advisor has been keeping the truth about who Rayna is from him .

I really, really liked this book you couldn't have made me not love Kabril he was a great hero, he was possessive and very protective of Rayna, any man he saw as a threat to Rayna and his relationship knew right away he was having none of it. I found myself laughing several times over Kabril's jealousy and Rayna was a great heroine. I loved the storyline to this book and I loved the world Mandy M. Roth created it was very different and interesting. I not only loved Kabril and Rayna but the side characters as well. I can't wait to read their stories. I do wish that the end had been a little longer, I hate when I feel like the endings are rushed and since I was enjoying this book so much I was nowhere near ready for this book to end.

I have only read two bird shifters books prior to this. I appreciate that when the men shape shifted they were extremely large. This is something that we all wonder when a man is almost 7 foot tall then becomes the size of a house cat.

These shifters were anatomically correct and the technical names were accurate. I love that this was a slow-burn and that it was friends to lovers.

They didn’t even do the do until chapter 24. Woah, what a book !! Kabril and Reyna were a match made in flipping ughhhhh !! This book was everything and Mason MF Lloyd is top tier !!!

Apparently this is a re-release that has been extended since its original publication. I’ve never read a shifter story with an avian hero before so was interested to see what the author would do. Well if honest I didn’t find Kabril to be very heroic unfortunately as he’s spoiled, egotistical and at times downright hotheaded. Still I do understand that he’s always been feted by those around him so can forgive some of his behaviour. After all no matter how much he wants to lick the heroine Rayna into oblivion he does bide his time and spend weeks trying to ‘woo’ her.
Rayna is a wildlife photographer and the irony is not lost on this reviewer as right from the start it’s a silly, fun story that’s clearly written with humorous moments deliberately included. Yes there’s plenty of smut too but honestly the puns ( cooked chicken anyone?) and general cheesiness of it all was very entertaining. Sweet, funny and a welcome break from reality.

Cute & Sexy Hot Read!

This was such a cute and fun read; I think I smiled all the way throughout the book. The characters connection was perfect as it showed a close friendship between the King Kabril and his loyal old friend and advisor “Sachin” as well as creating the friendship between Kabril and his future mate Rayna (human).

The romance between Kabril and Rayna grew sweetly with friendship and trust; and I loved how the relationship developed into an undeniable attraction between the two. The erotic scenes were so hot and steamy and I about come undone when Kabril ravaged Rayna’s body in the air using his magic and wings. It literally made me want to seek my own release. LOL

The ending has a great HEA leaving me wanting more of the story and the characters especially since some little Buteos Regalis were in the oven. That nice little surprise at the end was cute and sweet. I also want to mention that the cover to this book is absolutely beautiful.

Great Read!

I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up liking this book. I'm not one for bird shifter stories but for King Kabril I did. He's not too fond of humans nor having one as a mate. But meeting Rayna has made him feel things he's never felt. She isn't like every other woman he has encountered. She's different from other humans. And giving her up is out of the question. No matter how madly attracted he is to Rayna, he's going to have to win her over. She's not someone to be ordered around. And seeing him try to woo her was pretty hilarious. Their sexual tension was steamy AF. I can't wait to read the next books in the series and see how some of my other favorite characters find love and their mates.

2.5 stars. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good. The author did one of those "Three months later" chapter headings after the hero & heroine meet. The shortcut has them jumping on eachother but the reader is cheated out of their flirting and initial conflicts.
I didn't feel very attached to any of the characters.

The sex was minimal. It was beyond young adult for certain but I wouldn't call it erotica.
The world setup wasn't too shabby. There's a world of avian shifters with magic and conflict between "species" that seems like it might turn into a war.

I'd read the next one if I got it on loan or free. Otherwise, pass.

A nice easy read. It was interesting, and the characters were funny. A few plot holes but they didn't distract me, or make it any less entertaining. I'm looking forward to reading future books in this series.

This was an interesting fast/slow burn where the the H and h were on different levels of the relationship.
Rayna was lonely but making the most of life when she meets two strange men who move into her grandma's old house. She is instantly attracted to Kabril, but denies her feelings. Getting to know the vet and his assistant was easy. Getting over her own clumsiness without dying was hard!

Karbril knew immediately that he wanted to bond with Rayna. He just had to wait for her to agree. Wooing, or so his friend and advisor called it. He didn't know she was his one mate, but he was over caring! After all, he was the King and could make his own decisions!

Their relationship took a while to build, and wasn't super deep or stressful to read. Rayna is headstrong and doesn't let Kabril walk all over her. If he doesn't want to be unmanned, he has to step lightly!

So this story was a setup for the entire series. Reyna is all alone in the world after her grandmother passed. She is a funny character. She does not try to be this prisy, damsel in distress heroine. She understands her flaws and she understands that she cannot protect herself at all times and she doesn't attempt to.

Kabril is King and he totally uses that to his advantage. When they first meet one another he is attracted to her and he wants to just take her back to his bed and ravish her but he keeps forgetting that he is in the human world and not in his world.

I am glad Reyna did not give into her desires as other heroines would have early in their respective books.

I don't know if other readers noticed this but there was a part in the book where the person that abducted Reyna states The King told him to kidnap her. Clearly we know that Kabril did not say that and it was Kabril's brother who was King so I don't know if he should be thought of as a suspect character but somebody is doing some shady things. I cannot wait to find out who.🤔

This ebook was alright. It was enough to keep me entertained and to keep reading, but the actual plot of the story was a bit lackluster. I did like how Kabril learned to respect Rayna rather than just wanting to sleep with her 24/7 lol. Overall, I wouldn’t read this story again, but it was okay to read during breaks at work.

Whispersync Review
Rating: 4/5
Heat Rating: 3/4
Narrator Performance: 2/5 - DNF

The Good
· Good storyline.
· Fun secondary characters.
· Nice scenery descriptions.
· Well developed male protagonist.
· Appreciable world building.
· Made me want to continue reading the series.

The Bad
· Rayna's acceptance of the paranormal. She barely batted an eyelash IMO.
· Though resolved, I feel that the conflict in Kabril's and Rayna's relationship was somewhat glossed over.
· Kabril's entitled, imperialistic behavior. I get it, you're a king. That doesn't mean that you should expect absolutely everything to be done for you. Show some respect to your servants.

The Narrator
· Pleasant voice.
· I didn't really like his pacing. In fact I switched from listening to reading. I chose not to continue listening thinking that it might dampen my enjoyment of the story. I don't mind giving him another try at some point though. Maybe something more recent where he's had more experience.

PET PEEVE ALERT
· I read the second edition of the book and despite the fact that I was reading a book that had gone through two publications and had three editors I found numerous editing mistakes as well as a continuity issue.

2 and 1/2 star!!

I loved the idea of this book. Unfortunately, it felt like it could have gone a bit smoother.

Not sure the characters, with their designations in the story, felt like they were developed enough.

It kills me that this could have gone a lot better, cause I know that I LOVED the theme and idea..

Oh well.

I have no idea how this book got such good ratings. It is truly terrible - I basically hate-read it.

The bird men come from bird planet and have bird gods as they are all described. There are portals to Earth that the bird men can fly through. The only women you meet in bird society are either in a harem or work in the kitchen. The poor kitchen maids have a part time job of having to have sex with the various males around as well as working in the kitchen. The bird men despise them and call them whores. The harem workers have to not only service the king, but his brothers and men as well. They are also called whores. There are no other bird women mentioned. None. The only women with any power are the human women who mate the various members of the royal families.

A few of the books have the bird man hero masturbating in a hall or the kitchen and leaving the mess for the maids (who also have sex with them and are also despised) to clean up. There is also a lot of time spent describing the hero's sexual past and how extensive it is, which is not surprising considering they're hundreds of years old, but the way they describe women is unpleasant.

The heroines think nothing of leaving friends, family, and jobs behind to go live in bird world. In this series the hero mates his woman without her knowledge or consent. She repeats a phrase and now they're bound by magic and can't get out of it. It's very similar to the lack of choice the kitchen and harem women have. Also, the heroines are in their early 20s while the heroes are around 400 years old. That's pretty standard stuff. I only mention it because the treatment of women in these books is generally terrible.

King of Prey: Definitely the best of the series (two stars). This one has the distinction of calling an erection "distended flesh". I hadn't heard that before. Basically the oracle says that he will mate with a human woman and it's prohibited and he doesn't want to anyway. A human woman??!!? Giving up near constant sex with women who don't have a choice?!!!??

The H is arrogant, over indulged and it makes him seem stupid. Fortunately his adviser and friend, is smart and knows what he needs to do for their king and their kingdom. He needs to fool the King, the H. The h is a sugary sweet human, but unfortunately turns into thoughtless madwoman when the H pushes her buttons. She judges him harshly but easily forgives others. It was good but the too common character tropes detracted from a slightly different shifter story - bird shifters on the brink of war. I was interested in the story line until the lead characters acted out so much. It's always disappointing when the secondary characters are more interesting than the leads.

This was a great book. I wish it was a little longer because I love the story. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

King Kabril needs to find a mate to fulfill a prophesy and fertility of his people but with one catch... it needs to be a human. Kabril doesn't like humans that much. But for his people then he will do it. He must travel to the Earth realm to find his mate. He meets Rayna instead and starts to practice his wooing skills on her. Rayna gets close to Kabril and during a camping trip her life is changed. She doesn't know that he is a bird-shifter and from another realm. After getting kidnapped, will Rayna follow her heart or will she return to the world she knows?

I haven’t read too many bird shifter books. This is definitely one to add to your library! The shifters in this book don’t turn into tiny little birds, oh no, they are larger than life huge birds of prey. And Kabril, he is the King.

King Kabril must take a wife in order for the mating magik to begin, and for the people of his kingdom to once again have children. It is his duty. Sachin, his friend and right hand man, tells him that he must woo an earth woman to fulfill the prophecy. This doesn’t sit well with Kabril because humans are generally looked down upon. But as King, his life is not necessarily his own and his kingdom is counting on him. So he goes to earth, where he meets Rayna.

Rayna is an animal photographer, which seems to good to be true. Kabril’s cover story is that he is an avian veterinary. Very clever, Kabril! Right away there is some really great sparks between them, and their scenes together are an absolute joy. But Kabril believes Rayna is not the woman of the prophecy, so he keeps his distance. And Rayna keeps her distance because she’s a bit nervous and likes Sachin and Kabril so much – they become fast friends. But Sachin, he knows more than he is letting on and he is very effectively pulling the strings on this whole scenario.

One thing I can say about Mandy Roth and her writing, she is really fantastic at creating these new worlds for her characters to live in. Not only do you connect with her characters very easily, but their world feels so natural you feel like you are there. Kabril and his people don’t live on Earth, although they are able to travel here at their leisure through portals. Their world is fantastic and full of different types of bird shifters. I’ve read several of her books now and she really has a knack for combining the paranormal/supernatural element with the human elements, and on top of that she can add sci-fi so well that it is all a seamless blend. If you haven’t read her work before, I highly recommend you get started in doing so.

King of Prey does not disappoint on the action aspect either. There are battles and torture, the stuff that really ups the ante on the drama. But there are also skin tingling sensual moments that are definitely not to be missed. Ms. Roth is so good as describing the world around her characters, I could definitely vision some fantastic fan art coming from this. In particular there is a water scene in this story that I think would be gorgeous in a painting!

****A gifted copy was provided by the author for an honest review****

King Of Prey is a book which is sci fi /paranormal mixed with erotic romance. Kabril, King of Buteos Regalis, is seeking his mate who can help bring fertility back to his people. There is a prophecy stating that the mate would bring fertility back BUT the prophecy DID not mention she would be human and from another realm. Another problem Kabril has is that his kind believes humans are dirty and have to rely on artificial means to get in the air while he uses his wings to fly but he needs to bring fertility back so to Earth he goes.

On Earth we meet Rayna. Rayna is an animal photographer who is in the process of trying to sale her grandmother’s house. Kabril’s cover story is that he is an avian veterinarian. Immediately sparks fly between them, and their scenes together are so terrific that I cant stop reading because I am enjoying the interaction. Unfortunately Kabril believes Rayna is not the woman of the prophecy, so he tries to keep his distance. And Rayna tries to keeps away because she’s a bit nervous and likes both Sachin and Kabril so much in different ways– they all become fast friends but her heart belongs to Kabril. But Sachin, he definitely knows more than he lets on and he is very effective in pulling the strings in the background.
The writing is so seamless, the story written so well that you are rooting for the main characters Kabril and Rayna . There are battles and there are sensual times. There are twists and turns of all types in this story which will make you stand up and root for everything to work out for the H/h. I really loved this story. The author has a great knack for writing stories where you get so engrossed that you cant put the book down until the book is over and this is the same here. This is a great story in the Bird Shifter series which is book 1 of the series. You will really enjoy this story and will want to go on to read book 2.

The immortal bird shifter Kabril, King of the Royal Eagles has enough to worry about. Like the impending war with the Peregrine Falcons and declining birth rates. Now, their Oracle has told him that Kabril's mate is to be found on Earth and she will make him fall in love with her. The only problem is that Kabril hates the vile and wingless humans who need planes to fly. How could he ever fall in love with one so beneath him?

Enter Rayna Vogel; wildlife photographer and bird cooker extraordinaire. Not his chosen bride, but wow, how the sparks fly. He can't exactly fly off with her, but wooing proves difficult for a man used to having his pick from a harem of willing chicks. (Pun intended.)

King of Prey was a surprisingly sweet, funny (and cheesy) read... for a freebie I only picked up because I needed that hard to find letter K for this year's reading challenge.

As it turns out, the author really kept me entertained with her multiple bird puns and clueless bird men. Although... Rayna's name was a little too much. I mean; "Queen Bird" - lol, give me a break!

Nevertheless, I was sufficiently entertained to want to read the rest of these stories as well. Who would have thought!?

Instead of my customary star rating, I think I'll award speedos instead, in honor of that godawful cover. (But don't fret, the updated cover features a guy with bird wings.)

I rate this story 4 snug-fitting speedos!

I recieved an arc of this book by the author for an honest review.

I have to say that i really like how Mandy writes.
This story is short, funny, sexy and keeps your interest.
We meet the bird men royal hawks and specific we meet their king that the profecy has it he is to be mated to a human.
Kabril is not overly happy about that fact and tries to avoid it but he finds himsel in earth and overly drawn to Rayna.
Can these two find happiness?
A really sweet and funny story that will keep you reading and wanting for more!

I don't often read bird shifter book, but this was not too bad.

Kabril is King of the Eagles in a realm apart from Earth. They didn't really go into detail about this but the realm can only be accessed by some portals in the sky...like the Bermuda Triangle.

Kabril's people are having problems having babies so he comes to Earth to find his destined mate. I really liked his friend Sachrin. He convinces Kabril that he has to woo Rayna and get her to care for him. It gets pretty steamy.

We also get introduced to another group...the Falcons.
