Quiet and soft-spoken, Kate Zook is the responsible eldest daughter in an Amish family and prides herself on fulfilling her role. Then, one fateful snowy night, she uncharacteristically speaks her mind—and unwittingly plays a part in a horrible accident.
Wracked by guilt over her role in the tragedy that left her brother David injured, Kate devotes herself to his care, going so far as to take on his chores in the fields. Even so, her brother’s resentment toward her grows, and David torments Kate, making her increasingly isolated life even more difficult.
Though Kate’s parents have emotionally withdrawn, someone outside the home takes an interest in Kate and notes her clear grief. Samuel, a local boy, has recently returned from a wild rumschpringe—the Amish term for exploring the wider world—and recommitted to his community. Intrigued by Kate’s gentle yet loyal ways, he begins to fall in love with her. But tensions rise as he refuses to put up with David’s rage. As Kate’s heart begins to stir and cry out for happiness, she must rely on faith to find forgiveness or risk losing out on love.

Thus book held my attention from the first page until the very last page. It shows the turmoil that any family would face when one person makes a poor decision that ends one life and effects so many other lives. What was very interesting to me is that the family in the story is Amish. A wonderful book by Ms. Price
Sarah Price has shown once again with "An Amish Buggy Ride" why when a reader reads one of her books, they want to read all she has ever written.
I was given a pdf version of "An Amish Buggy Ride"by Sarah Price for an honest review and this reader was not disappointed at all with the story except I didn't want it to end. I really didn't want to leave the characters in"story land". I wanted to know more.
The title is just perfect for the story, as the story starts with an Amish buggy ride.
Kate Zook is bullied vocally by her brother David. David blames Kate for the accident that causes his disability. My heart really ached for Kate and I was literally saying aloud as I was reading "David you are really not a nice person and Kate, why are you letting him do this to you?" At one point in the story I was literally cheering for Samuel when he stood up to David.
I think the reason this story is so great is because it shows that Amish families has troubles and tribulations like the Englische (non-Amish people) families. We all know characters like David and Kate in real life. That is why Sarah Price's books are so wunderbar gut (wonderfully good) because she brings real life into her fiction.
"An Amish Buggy Ride" by Sarah Price is a love story but also a story about faith and healing.
Is guilt really Kate's to accept or should she accept Samuel's interest in her and learn to move on?
There is a surprise waiting for Kate one day at church, I was totally shocked when I learned this as I am sure that most readers would be. I do have to say that I was happy to learn this surprise.
I am sure it is no surprise that I am giving "An Amish Buggy Ride" by Sarah Price five stars.
In that unique voice of hers, Sarah Price has penned a heartrending but lovely story of romance, secrets, guilt, and shame – under the guise of a seemingly perfect Amish community; overflowing with colorful daffodils, robin red-breasts, and sparkling, fish-filled rivers.
Kate is a lovely young Amish woman, whose life and the lives of her entire family were changed the night a terrible tragedy took place. Feeling responsible, Kate's life consists of helping her father run the family farm, attending church, and helping her aunt with her new baby. After all, how could she possibly go to singings, laugh, and be social as if nothing had ever happened? Her life is made even more miserable by the guilt piled on her by an obnoxious family member and the obvious darkness hovering over her family. When the handsome and friendly Samuel Esh comes into Kate's life she has no social skills, but slowly begins to open up as a rosebud in the summer sun. However, she knows deep down she can never have Samuel for she has greatly sinned, not once but twice…
In her own exquisite style, Sarah Price has once again penned a unique "out-of-the box" Amish tale guaranteed to captivate the reader from page one! Ms. Price masterfully writes of an Amish community – where the consequences of keeping dark secrets are as far reaching as the ripples in a stream, and where love hides a multitude of sins! An Amish Buggy Ride is truly a wonderful story of romance and redemption, and one that made me cry because of the stark reality of the storyline. Not your typical cookie cutter Amish read – be sure to put this one at the top of your wishlist!
Once again Sarah Price caused me to forget about my life and lose myself in the lives of Kate Zook and Samuel Esh as I was transported to a farm in Pennsylvania. She is a master at creating characters who are so real they become a part of me.
For me, relating to Kate is not difficult. She has committed what she considers un-forgivable sins and is tormented by un-forgiveness and an unrealistic self-view.
Her brother, David, feeds her feelings of worthlessness by constantly blaming her for and reminding her of a horrible accident which left him permanently injured. While his treatment of her is malicious, she allows him to continue because she feels she deserves his abuse.
Samuel Esh walks into her life and through gentle love and kindness begins treating her with respect and honor. He gives her value. He gives her time and teaches her to love and forgive herself while at the same time inches his way into her heart. It is a beautiful story which, to me, is a parallel story to the way God treats us. We often feel unworthy of our own forgiveness, let alone God’s. God wants us to understand that He accepts us no matter what we’ve done—that He thinks we are beautiful and valuable.
An Amish Buggy Ride is a story of mistakes, choices, forgiveness, relationships and love.
As always it is pure delight to have the opportunity to read Sarah’s story as she weaves her character’s lives in with our lives…to get to know them, while learning something about myself at the same time.
I was privileged to receive this story in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
This book got to me. Pure and simple it got to me. Just for that very reason, the purity and the simplicity. I have always been curious of the Amish way of life, probably because I long for the simplicity and the community it inspires. Kate Zook our protagonist bears a heavy weight on her shoulders. The accident that took her brother’s girl’s friend’s life and changed his life forever blames his sister and makes her life miserable. As Kate struggles with this, a young man Samuel has taken interest in her and in that relationship she learns about the deep things of faith. That it is not an ideal, but one that makes living with purpose.
I liked how the author contrasted the life of the Amish with Kate’s family. There were some secrets that kept them from knowing the love of each other but more importantly God’s love for them. In knowing Kate, you know the struggle she faces and what she must do to overcome it. It is not easy as one would think because it takes an act of faith and being vulnerable. Samuel’s character is enduring as he struggles to understand Kate and in understanding Kate paves the way for her to heal and her family to heal. I have to admit, I cried. I loved his example of love and the simplicity of his love. It is a love that is cultivated and creates a place for love to grow.
What a great read, so many holding on to guilt, and others making them feel guilty, we are led down the road, to redeeming? Or will, the guilt over rule everything in their lives? This is one page-turning read, from the first page to the very end, and loved the epilogue! Dealing with act of forgiveness can be hard, and even harder if you cannot forgive yourself. Sarah Price has done an awesome job of leading us on this journey and with the question of whether or not we accept God’s grace We have a great time riding in the buggy, and could almost feel like I was there, with the clip clop of the horse’s feet. Loved going to the park and felt like I was feeling the spray from the beautiful waterfalls, and looking at the fauna and wildlife, my kind of a field trip. What a surprising out-come you are about to experience, loved the way things turned out when I never saw it coming. You will need the tissues handy, and the emotions felt in this story could go more than one way, especially when you are hurting. Don’t miss this exceptional Amish read, really one of the best I’ve read, it has all of the best parts of Amish life here.
I received this book through the Author Sarah Price, and was not required to give a positive review.
An Amish tale of love in the aftermath of misfortune and regret
It is hard to create a story exploring dysfunction, abuse and loss within a family while setting the stage for a love story to unfold, but I believe it was masterfully done. Sarah Price is a master at creating these simplistic Amish Christian stories. Enjoy!
Been quite awhile since I've read an Amish Book. This was a very interesting and an emotional one as well. A Young man and his girl friend were in a buggy and were riding it. Bad news is that they were drinking whiskey and it lead up to a wreck and two people lost their lives. As the book unfolds we learn more about this, and find the weak spots that many of the characters have. It was very well written, and found that the characters asked for forgiveness in that they knew about kids and the alcohol and didn't tell any one. They had a congregational meeting, and many of the members confessed of this horrible event. The Bishop lead the discussion and as more and more people confessed that they knew of the alcohol it really touched the members of the group. I recommend this if you like that type of reading. I used to read a lot of Amish books. Should read more. Enjoy!
This was a quick, satisfying read. Kate Zook's life is turned upside down when her brother is involved in a tragic accident and she feels responsible for her "role" in it. She was already a pious and religious girl but in the months afterward she really doubles down on her faith and her guilt. She lets her now crippled brother boss her around and berate her thinking she deserves it. Her home life is somber and strained. When Samuel Esch starts to take an interest in her she is flabbergasted, why would anyone take an interest in her? Samuel gets Kate to start open up and living life - determined to ease some of the burden she carries. Thoughtful, poignant, and romantic - Amish romance at its finest!
Kate is the oldest daughter of an Amish family. After not stopping her brother from driving his buggy drunk, where he has a wreck and has to be in a wheelchair the rest of his life and kills the girl riding with him, she feels so guilty. She has to take over his farm chores while he yells at everyone in the family. Kate’s dad finally decides that it is time for her to start having a social life again. She feels so guilty that she turns down a suitor until his persistance pays off.
I enjoyed this book about present day Amish. While it’s a little slow I was glad to have read it & be brought in through lives of the main characters. I appreciated the faith aspects & how they did & did not view God at times. We so often try to take God’s place whether that is trying to do things our way or carrying guilt/shame as punishment when God forgives us & will carry our burdens.
Kate feels guilty that she couldn't prevent the accident that left her brother, David, paralyzed and very bitter especially towards Kate. It isn't until Samuel comes into her life that things change for Kate.
Kate Zook is the eldest daughter who takes responsibilities very seriously. She lives in an Amish Community on the family farm.
During the first winter snow a fatal accident happens, which changes their family. Her brother David is paralyzed and in a wheelchair. He refuses therapy and becomes very bitter.
Because of his condition Kate takes over his farm duties helping her Dad.
She meets Samuel Esh and meets him at the weekly singing for the unwed. He likes Kate very much and starts giving rides to her home. Then he stops by more often to do things like to go fishing with friends.
There so much more to this story, if you like books about Amish life you'll enjoy this book. Also accepting forgiveness per God's word is also very important.
I read this book on the Kindle and it was slow going at first. Kate's brother,David had a few too many drinks and she refused to ride home in the buggy with him and his girlfriend, Ruth. There's a terrible accident and the book is about what happens after the accident. Kate feels responsible and tries to help her family and David in any way that she can. Samuel was one of my favorite characters because he is so easy going and dependable. At the end Kate accepts that she did the best she could and finds out that many other people knew of David's drinking too.
I read this in one sitting. Couldn’t put it down! The characters really had depth and it was easy to feel their angst and self-blame. Samuel was definitely a keeper! I would love to read a follow up story on David. He has quite the journey ahead of him, but it seems he is facing the right direction now. Aside from the story itself, this book was well edited. No cringe worthy mistakes that seem to be so common with some books. I look forward to reading more from this author!
Kate and Samuel grew up in the same community, but he's a bit older, so they didn't spend any time together. He's recently returned from his “running around time” and immediately took steps to join the church. So they see each other at the young people gatherings.
The story focuses on Kate and her family as they live after “the accident,” as well as Kate and Samuel's blossoming relationship. I really liked the way the story played out. I found it enjoyable overall. There are some really touching moments, as well as some frustrating ones.
I really enjoyed almost very minute of this book. The Amish/Mennonite world is so different from most of our every day experience. Outside of the world, but the youth have the opportunity to try it out. Some leave their roots, but many come back. It is an ideal life if the bishop and community is as rational and forgiving as this one is, I came away with feeling of great grace and peace, which is a really good experience.
Awhile back. I purchased an Amish book for a gift for someone who enjoyed the genre. After reading the promo on it, I thought I'd give one a try. I really loved it. Very heartwarming to get a peek into the very simple, honest, strong faith, and hard working life of the Amish. I think it felt very true, with the use if Amish terms, etc. This story had a bit of mystery and some good life lessons. I enjoyed it a lot and may be looking for more.
I really enjoyed this book. It's not the usual type of book that I usually read, but I found that it was quite a lovely story about how the Amish live and work and deal with problems in their community. I loved the main characters of Kate and Samuel and the development of their relationship. I thought all of the characters were very well realized. The book was interesting from the very first page and as I read further into the story it became difficult to put down.
I would rate this a 4.5. I absolutely loved this book. So many books take me a few chapters to get drawn in. I was hooked after only a couple pages. I fell in love with the characters. The writing was so tender, authentic, and beautiful. It's a story of resilience, repentance, and redemption. I think we all could learn something from this book. It also eloquently points you to God through tragic times, and how He is alwayswith us. Easy, enjoyable read.
The last Amish book (not by this author). I read was not well written. This is actually decent book. I enjoyed the story with it's many layers and reading more about Amish courtship. Content: Clean Language: No. Clean Religious: Extremely religious with scripture and lots of talk about prayer.
I really enjoyed this book.. I always had a interest in the Amish way of living. It sounds like hard work but good family work ethnic ...I would love that woman would get together and make quilts ...I tried it once but thought how nice it would be if there was a group...
This is the first book I read by this author. I enjoyed it very much. Since she grew up in Lancaster County she knows what she is writing about the Amish. I loved the characters of Kate and Samuel. Most of the characters in the book are very likable. Her brother David is another story.
I would love if the author would write another book about Kate and Samuel and their families.
Very good story. I loved the outcome of this story. Its wonderful for Samuel to realize the feelings that she had because of her brothers accident. She blamed herself, when others felt the same way. It's good to have these feelings come to the surface.must take a load off.
I don't live too far away from the Amish community in southern Ohio. We drive down to visit the shops and have some of that delicious food. I have wondered about many customs , and this story helped my understanding. Enjoyed this book.
