With the support of friends, Susannah puts her future on the line to open up downtown Salt Lake City's first all-chocolate cafe, The Cholcolate Bar, a place where scrumptious conversations and delectable desserts abound. In the midst of all this, social turmoil hits Susannah when she catches the interest of the city's most eligible bachelor just as her long-lost love returns to town--with intentions of marrying anyone but Susannah.
I'm not sure if it was the kindle version of this book, but it left me really confused. There were not page breakers which means one conversation led to the next in a hodge podge fashion. Lots of characters were introduced, and I finally at the end had them all pretty much straight. It followed the Jane Austen's Persuasion story line but I didn't love it. Entertaining enough though, wish it wouldn't have felt so choppy.
This is a delightful Mormon-Romance novel. Susannah, the MC got cold feet and jilted her true love to go on a mission. Years later, the company she works for goes belly-up and she opens her own chocolate-themed dessert shop. During this time, the most eligible bachelor in town decides he wants her for his own and it seems there is no stopping him once he's made up his mind. Will she marry him, or find a way to make amends to her first love? It's a fun ride, and each chapter ends with a delicious chocolate recipe to try.
Wonderful story that captivated me from the beginning.
This delightful story captured me from the beginning. The characters were so well developed and the way their story interwove was perfect. I LOVED the humor and the witty comments of Suze’s customers. The labels and lifestyles portrayed brought everyone to life. I haven’t laughed out loud from a book in a while. I highly recommend this book. I read it in one evening and could hardly put it down when I needed to. Two thumbs up. As well as all my fingers and toes!!!
I liked this story but I didn't love how it was executed. I felt so confused sometimes. The thoughts just ran together and when someone was talking it wasn't pointed out who it was so it was so confusing if there was more then one person talking to each other.
Another great CLEAN LDS romance!! I like "easy reads" in between the more in-depth ones. This is great for that! Just sit back and enjoy the story without thinking too much!
I liked this book but really Susannah is a bit dim and like Persuasion she listens to people who have no right butting in. The ending is a a bit unbelievable but fits into the story well. It is humerous and I would love to meet Trevor as he is definitely a big part of the story.
I love this type of romcom where the main character doesn't take herself too seriously and the book is light and fun, even if the problems she's facing aren't. I loved the little Persuasion references. And I need to make all these chocolatey recipes ASAP.
I loved this sweet LDS Romance! I love how Susannah kept trying to do what was right! I also loved how determined John was to get his visits in every month! The end made me very happy!
I have often read through reviews on LDS fiction, especially the negative ones, and have found that the common thing people don't generally like is the light hearted read. Well if you take a look at my bookshelf, you shall see it's mostly the LDS fiction, for I happen to LOVE a light read. This book was no different, and for that I am grateful. I need that moment getting out of my world, into someone else's, a place I can go without having to think too deeply... Sometimes it just feels good not to think. Thus my need for the cute fiction... :) So first of all what I liked in particular about this book, is that it's full of chocolate recipes, definitely nothing to complain about there! (Just a good thing we happened to have some of my favorite chocolate ice cream on hand while I was reading...) I was thoroughly amused, enjoyed a few good laughs through the story that ended just as I thought--and hoped--that it would. I love predictability in books, for I find myself wishing sometimes real life would be like the fiction, and you could count on the ending... I liked the quote on the front of the book: "The way to a woman's heart lies somewhere between conversation and chocolate." Now for me, throw in some shoes and a good book, and that's the way to my heart, my own definition of something delicious... :)
This is a modern retelling of Jane Austen's Persuasion, only the auther never said that's what it is, but it was really obvious to me. Susannah Hapsburg thought she would grow up get married and have babies, but when she actually does grow up she talks (persuades) herself out of love and goes on a mission. After the mission, things aren't the same either and she doesn't get married. She immerses herself in her career at a big finance house and when it goes under finds herself not sure what to do about her life. Susannah decides to open a new business called the "Chocolate Bar" where people (mostly women), can meet to talk and have great dessert. Susannah's long lost love comes back into her life, and she finds herself being pursued by the towns most eligible bachelor. This is book is so like Persusion, Susannah even has a sick friend. I didn't really like the title of the book, I didn't feel like it fit the story. The reason it's named "Delicious Conversation" is from a quote by Mel Gibson "I have found that the way to a woman's heart lies somewhere between chocolate and conversation". I have to agree with Mel on this one! However, in the novel, I didn't feel like there was enough conversation and I felt like it took a long time to introduce the love interests. Still, it was a light easy read with great chocolate recipes in every chapter.
alright, i'm giving in and giving this 3 stars, mostly because i'm a total sucker for lds fiction. especially when there's an element of romance in it. i'm pretty cliche like that. hahaha. that being said, i didn't catch that this was a modern (mormon) update of jane austen's "persuasion" until i got on here and looked at some of the reviews. once i realized that, it was fairly obvious in hindsight what the parallels in the story are. i think my very favorite part of this whole book (and the only thing that really made me think) was in a conversation between the 2 main characters where the guy says that he likes books that are predictable because when you don't have to worry about the ending, you can just "enjoy the ride" of the story. or something like that. i'm hugely paraphrasing. and i read this book a LONG time ago.
still. i DID like it. i like love stories and i like happy endings. this had both.
Two confessions. First, I already read this last year but for some reason never rated it & felt that I couldn't give it an honest rating after so long so I just finished reading it again. That said, the second confession is that this book is really more of a 3.5 for me but since I was happy to read it again, I bumped it up to a 4. So here's my thoughts. This is an LDS fiction, modern telling of the story Persuasion. I enjoyed the love story & the setting in a Chocolate Bar. Even liked the male lead. What I didn't like was that, at times, it seemed like an unnecessary stretch to tie in both their religious culture & Jane Austen phraseology/story plot. I'm sure both were intended to build a bond between the reader & the characters..it just didn't always work for me in this book (strictly opinion). :) Overall, a cute read. Oh & I have yet to try any of the recipes (another part I'd forgotten about) but hope to this time around!
This book was horrible. From page one I could tell that it would be a boring and over-exaggerated read. Seriously, this book tries to be Candice Bushnell or Lauren Weisberger with a Christian spin, but fails miserably. We all know that the characters in modern chick lit are far-fetched, but this takes ridiculous to a whole new level. Susannah fell in love with John Wentworth years ago but rejected him for who knows why. Now he's back and dating a hot young thing so Susannah starts dating the hottest bachelor in the city. (Does no one else find it strange that the IN crowd are always Christian and don't even want to have sex?) But then, John and Susannah find themselves continually running into each other "unexpectedly" and realize that their romance from long ago is still alive and passionate. Yawn. If you have nothing better to do or want to waste your time, this is the book for you!
(Genre:LDS fiction/romance/humor) This is an LDS version of the Jane Austen classic "Persuasion". The main character, when 21 years old, turns in her mission papers because she nervously supposes that the young man she has fallen for, has fallen for her and will be proposing marriage soon. She really likes him, but is very nervous about marriage and feels too young, etc. Her good friend points out that she can just turn in her mission papers to solve the whole uncomfortable dilemma. This book takes place several years post mission, with the young lady still single and trying to forget the man she left behind so many years ago. It has got humor and romance and is a lot of fun to read.
This book was just what I needed right now and it exceeded my expectations. It was surprisingly well written for a cheap amazon kindle book. I loved it. It was a modern day LDS retelling of Persuasion and the reason it exceeded my expectations was because it was funny! Like, I laughed out loud a couple times and I wasn't expecting to do that. It was also really sweet. The ending was a bit outrageous, but I loved it. I liked the main character. I wish we would have gotten to know the hero a bit better, but it's not like you get to know the hero's very well in Austen's books anyway. So, if you want a light clean romantic comedy, I highly recommend this one.
Darling book! I loved all of the recipes that are included... CANNOT WAIT to try them all! I have it on good authority by the author herself that the carmel recipe is to die for! I loved the Jane-Austen meets chocolate feel to this book. I do have to warn you though, you will want to read this book with a box of sees chocolate next to you! The romance is sweet and done perfectly, I love that it set in SLC, because I can picture everywhere the MC goes. This book has also been republished as Chocolate and Conversation.
This is a like a modern-day Mormon mash-up of Emma and Persuasion. It's mostly predictable and has an ending that could never happen in real life. But if you're looking for a super-sweet and squeaky clean beach read, this fits the bill. The biggest problem I had with Ms. Griffith's writing is that she jumps in the timeline and story without separating by chapter or page breaks. There were a few times I had to re-read sections before I realized they happened at the beginning of the day and then later in the day. It was confusing.
Personality!! That's the word that came to mind as I read this modern day adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion! As I finished the book and closed the cover at 2:00 am, I gave a satisfied sigh! That was good! Every chapter ends with some sort of chocolate recipe. I think I gained 5 lbs. just reading the book! :) Can't wait to try the recipes! I also loved how the author tied in the recipies to her story. Very clever. 4.5 stars.
A modern day LDS take on Persuasion (which is one of my favorites). It was cute, fun, quick, and overall fairly well-written. It took me a second to notice the correlation to Persuasion and when "the penny dropped" I felt awfully silly... it's obvious!
Light, clean, easy read – with a not too subtle similarity to “Persuasion” with chocolate. Storyline is obviously contrived and predictable, as the LDS author herself describes her writing as “cotton candy for the soul – light, sweet, gone.” The decadent-sounding chocolate recipes look fabulous, but after a closer review many of them are missing the needed details for readers to actually try to prepare them for themselves. Don’t make me drool then leave out something important!
PG This was my fourth Jennifer Griffith book. I've read *The Lost Art*, *Immersed*, and *Hopeless Crush*. This one, like *Hopeless Crush*, was overtly Latter-day Saint, but I'm familiar with that and I really liked it. I loved the recipes included and I can't wait to try them out. I liked the h and H and their long awaited romance, and the nod to Jane Austen's *Persuasion" in the book. I enjoyed this a lot, and I'm looking forward to reading another Jennifer Griffith book.
I loved this story. Not only because it was a spin off of Persuasion (one of my all time favorites), but also because so much of it was exactly what I needed right now. I really liked how it was a spin off, but it didn't follow the original story as closely as most spin offs I've read of Jane Austen's books. This is definitely a book I'll be reading again. I might even try some of the recipes, or at least try to convince my husband (who actually likes to cook) to make them.
This is a modern adaptation of Persuasion. I felt like Griffith did a good job modernizing the story. The plot made sense in modern times. In terms of romance I would have liked to spend more time with Wentworth. We didn't see him often enough to suit me.
This is LDS fiction using LDS lingo and cultural references. Someone not familiar with the church might need to have clarification.
Susannah said No to John's proposal 10 years ago. Her life has changed so much and now she heard he has returned to Salt Lake city. She still has feelings for him but heard he has a girlfriend. So seems she has lost him for good. Brigham a famous lawyer comes into her life. He is sweeping her off her feet but her feelings are still thinking about John. Well written story with strong and believable characters.
Susannah's corporate job just disappeared and she decides to start a new "Chocolate Bar", an all-chocolate cafe, in downtown SLC. Can it succeed? Will she choose between a new "cities most eligible bachelor" or an old friend who returns to SLC? What will she do with a tortoise she just inherited?
this was okay. it had a bit of a week plot- very predictable, and the character was so unrealistic. Nothing really went wrong for her in the entire book, AND she ends it with not only her getting the guy, but inheriting 375 million dollars. REALLY???? I won't deny the fact that I read romance for the escape from reality, but REALLY??
easy read. I must be on a book kick about single woman or something. Susannah has been searching for a companion but keeps coming up empty handed. Then her job is gone and financial trouble is following her. She comes into too many choices and then Brigham, the most eligible bachelor in utah comes a calling along with the lost love of her life. decisions decisions. Kind of hockie at the end.
This romance is full of dilemna. What should the MC do now that her original life plan didn't work out? And, who is right for her - Mr. charming, successful, and witty, or Mr. I loved you once before and it didn't work out? There are yummy chocolate recipes at the end of each chapter, some are now among my favorites.
