Oak Ridge, #3

Deception & Daylight : A Small Town Dislike to Lovers Romance

Rate this book
I never intended to be back in Miles Barlow's orbit. Not after everything that happened between us two years ago. I thought I had it all figured out-he was just another guy who couldn't handle the mess of my life. But when push comes to shove, I find myself running to Oak Ridge, Kentucky and straight into the arms of the man I despise.

He's the last person I want to turn to. But I'm out of options, and I don't have the strength to keep pretending I'm fine. So, we strike a we'll fake a relationship while I try to heal. But I can't trust him. Not after what he did.

I'm here to heal, but not to stay. Oak Ridge is just another stop in my constant search for something-anything-that feels like home. And even if he's every bit as infuriating and irresistible as I remember, I won't let him close again. But the more time we spend together, the harder it gets to keep pretending, and the more I realize - maybe I don't hate him as much as I thought.

Book 3 of 5 in The Oak Ridge Series by @willakaywrites

❤️Please read the TW❤️

Deception + Daylight follows Miles: a small town contractor with a golden retriever heart and a mouth full of sex + sin. Maggie, a secret romance author that suffered a horrific incident is now off to find solace in a small town-wondering if she’ll ever find a place to call home. With a chance encounter years ago followed by a deceptive heartbreak, these two are given a second chance to make things right.

Maggie and Miles are magnetic: tethered with broken pasts, yet hopeful for the future. Their story is beautiful + emotionally captivating right from the very start. From their spiteful turned flirty banter, hot + spicy moments, heartwarming conversations + embraces, to uplifting + encouraging praises, Miles and Maggie prove to be a small town power couple. From the beginning, their chemistry is irrevocably undeniable. Miles is the needed light to pull Maggie out of the darkness that she has been living in. I am still swooning over Miles and proud of Maggie for her strength. We are taken on a journey of healing as we read their story and I hope your heart is captivated when you read this just like mine was.

This is my first novel from Willa and I cannot recommend Deception and Daylight enough. Found family is my favorite trope and you will FEEL the love of mama Lucy and all of their friends. I look forward to reading the rest of this series!

Just go read this, pretty please!
This is a beautiful book with a couple serious topics so do check the trigger warnings before you start. The way Willa writes sucks you into the story and the life of the main characters but also that of the side characters. Oak Ridge has become a place I'd love to visit (if only it was real). Deception & Daylight is a stunning story of healing, found family, a beautiful love and its struggles, and a heartwarming small town.

Mags and Miles gave me ALL the feels, and I instantly fell in love with them! As individuals and as a couple.
Their story is heartbreaking, healing, filled with banter, and so much love. Miles is a dream in so many ways, and Mags is an absolute warrior. I love that their vulnerability was open to see and understand, and their struggles were not overlooked.
A friend group and community so full care and loyalty, Deception and Daylight is a book that'll not be easily forgotten.

ARC Review - 5⭐️
I am so happy to have gotten selected.

‼️This book was emotional. Let me start off with a trigger warning that this book contains sexual assault and abuse.‼️ (more below)

The assault is not talked about in great detail. Some books write assault as a plot device to give their characters an edge and make a story. This book is not the case.

What this is about is Mags healing journey and how the love from the right person provides Daylight in Darkness. You are not defined by the shitty things that happen to you. You do see SOME justice towards the end of the book on this.

The romance is rivled to if a Hallmark movie went rated R and I absolutely adored it. Lucy × Mags relationship will forever have my heart. Sorry, Miles 🤣

Spice Level:
4.5/5 🍆

💙He Falls First

Thank you to Willa for providing me an ARC copy, I am absolutely obsessed with the series and can't wait to read more. 💙

Deception & Daylight had me hooked. Maggie and Miles? Absolute perfection. Miles is that small-town dream: soft heart, dirty mouth, pure gold. Maggie’s strength and fire? I was obsessed. Together, they’re electric.

Their banter made me laugh, their chemistry had me sweating, and their journey hit me right in the chest. Watching Miles tear down Maggie’s walls and love her through it all? Pure magic. And the found family vibe? So good. I’d move to Oak Ridge just to be part of it.

This story brought heat, heart, and healing. I didn’t want it to end. If you’re into small-town romance with spice and soul, go read this.

I’ve been following along and reading Willa’s books since she first published and this is her best work yet. Everything about this book = certified banger. And boy do they be bangin. Loved everything, from Maggie healing from her trauma and Miles being there for her along the way no matter what and unconditionally. We could all hope to have a Miles in our life.

This book is more than a love story between Mags and Miles. It's about two people with a pasts and finding their way back to love. It shows that some relationships are worth fighting for and building trust again. They both had to drop their guards and fight for what they truly wanted.

Yes it had spice, but it also had found family and realizing what really matters in life.

The character development had depth and feeling. I would highly recommend this book!!

There are some heavy topics in this novel, but Willa wrote them care and gave good representation to these topics.

I was honored to ARC this book.
This is the 4th book I’ve read by Willa Kay. I was initially drawn to her as a plus size series with small town feel.
This book perfectly captured the characters Miles and Mags that we have grown to love over the last 2 and a half books.
The emotions I felt while reading this book was unreal. I cried , my heart palpitated, I laughed and loved. I might have even yelled a few times in frustration. Without any spoilers this book is relatable in many ways and healing.

“You have challenged me , infuriated me , and changed me for the better. letting you go was the biggest mistake of my life. i didn’t think I was the man you need, but I’d like to the man you choose”

“You were made for me”

Spicy 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ 5/5

Please read the Trigger warnings ⚠️ as this book has lots of triggers.

I freely posted this arc reader review.

✨BOOK REVIEW✨
Deception & Daylight by Willa Kay
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

WOW. This book absolutely shattered me and put me back together in the best way possible. Deception & Daylight is more than just a romance—it’s a healing journey wrapped in small-town charm, emotional depth, and unforgettable characters.

When healing means going back to the last place you thought you’d end up… and into the arms of the man you swore you’d never forgive 😮‍💨

Maggie is a woman on the run from her past, hiding her identity and pain behind sarcasm and stubbornness. Miles? A golden-retriever-hearted contractor with a filthy mouth and a fierce devotion. When life throws them back into each other’s orbit, they strike a deal: fake a relationship and keep feelings off the table. Spoiler alert… that plan crashes and burns gloriously.

Their chemistry? SCORCHING. Their banter? Sharp and flirty. Their emotional connection? Deep and raw. Watching them unravel years of tension and trauma was beautiful and so vulnerable. The side characters (Lucy, I LOVE YOU) and the found family aspect gave this book so much heart.

💔 Yes, there are trigger warnings—please read them before diving in. Maggie’s story includes themes of sexual assault and emotional abuse. Willa handles it with so much care and respect.

Tropes you’ll love:
✅ Fake dating with real feelings
✅ Grumpy + wounded history
✅ Small-town vibes
✅ Emotional healing with a side of heat
✅ That “I hate you but I still want you” tension
✅ Soft dom/sub vibes
✅ Hidden identity
✅ He falls first

Willa Kay delivers an emotional rollercoaster filled with angst, heartbreak, and the kind of slow-burn fake relationship that has you screaming, “Just kiss already!” From the second-chance tension to the small-town Kentucky charm, this book had me hooked. And if you feel the same, then this book is for you! 🖤

TW: Includes detailed sexual content and potential emotional triggers.

This book was so good! I'm new to Willa Kay's books but she is now on my must read list. This book had drama, heartbreak, swoon, spice, joy, and brilliant characters.

Maggie/Mags is an author living in Toronto, not putting down roots, missing her bestie/the platonic love of her life who now lives in Kentucky, and hating a certain man.

Miles is a construction company owner living life in a small Kentucky town, pining for what could have been with a certain Canadian.

Something happens in Toronto and Mags escapes to Kentucky to be near her only support. Their paths cross. They fight, they banter, they fight some more, they (well, she) deny their chemistry, they fight even more, and then they end up fake dating. *happy dance*

Mags will break your heart in a good way. She was raised by an absolute d-bag of a dad and has never had a family or home. Paige is her closest thing. And she desperately needs someone to want her, to choose her, to see value in her. And she has so much value! She is fierce and sweet and accepting and kind and smart and loving. Her story is beautiful. Warning, you may need some tissues on hand if you're a crier.

Miles is a man trying to do what is right and protect those he cares for. And he wants to help Mags find herself again. And if she happens to fall for him, well, that's just a bonus. The way he helps his mom and supports her is so sweet & heartwarming. And the way he pushes & supports Mags is the stuff of dreams.

Their story is gorgeous. And the side characters? Love!! They are so amazing.

My brain really liked the writing and flow of the story. I didn't struggle to stay engaged or feel invested. The writing completely pulled me in.

There are some tough topics discussed in this book, so make sure you check out the author's content warnings.

ARC Review: Deception & Daylight by Willa Kay

Deception & Daylight is the third book in the Oak Ridge series, following the story of Miles Barlow, a small-town local, and Maggie Watson, a woman in need of escape.

Their paths first crossed when their friends got together, but an incident left Maggs resenting Miles—though his feelings for her never wavered. When something terrible forced Maggie to run, she found herself back in Oak Ridge, staying at his mother’s inn. This led to daily encounters with Miles, who was always there, offering support and unwavering affection. Despite her attempts to keep her distance, he slowly broke through her walls. But Maggie wasn’t used to staying in one place—could the warmth of Oak Ridge and her deepening connection with Miles convince her to stay?

This was such a beautiful and emotionally intense story. Told from a dual POV, the plot is engaging, with some heavy and potentially triggering themes. However, it also has plenty of lighthearted moments, especially in the banter between friends. I loved the sense of community, particularly the motherly warmth from Lucy. Miles and Maggs were like oil and water at first, but their undeniable chemistry soon became clear. Some of my favorite moments were when Miles stood up to her father and the heartfelt birthday party scene.

If you love spicy romance with deep emotions, this one is definitely for you!

I loved being back in Oak Ridge 😍

I have been waiting on the tea for why Miles and Mags act the way they do for some time now and I’m finally glad I got it. {if you haven’t read the previous oak ridge books you miss a good bit of banter between Miles and Mags, so go read those now!}

It is a good idea to check the trigger warnings before reading, but as always, the situations and themes in this book are dealt with the utmost respect by Willa Kay.

We start with a restless Mags. Feeling the pressure from her dad to be in the family business, but torn because she has a dream of her own. When, something traumatic happens to Mags one night. Now she just wants to get away.

She decides to go be with Paige, her bff, and the rest of the Oak Ridge gang, which includes Miles Barlow 😒. While she’s there, she gets to dive a bit more into what she wants to be, heals from her pasts (plural for a reason 😉), gets to have some fun, and finds a mother figure she never knew she needed (you can literally feel the love from Lucy pour off the page).

*you can read this book as a standalone, but it is a part of a series that follows a group of friends. The events, if it not mistaken, happen chronologically, but Willa does such a good job of explaining anything that’s needed from the past books into this one.

I had been in such a horrible book rut before I picked this up and let me tell you, this book had everything I needed to get me right out of that reading rut! I was giggling & kicking my feet, crying, screaming, blushing, allllll the feelings!

One thing I absolutely LOVED about the book was the playlist that was perfectly curated for this book! Not only was there a playlist to scan at the beginning of the book but at the beginning of each chapter, THERE IS A SONG THERE FOR YOU TO LISTEN TO! I think this was honestly such a well thought out, incredible detail. 🖤

Now let me warn you, you MUST read the trigger warnings before you dive into this book, but if you do dive in, I promise you won’t be disappointed. This book covers some heavy topics but I think @willakaywrites does an incredible job of writing the healing journeys from start to finish.

I absolutely fell in love with both Miles and Maggie. The banter is top tier, the spice is SPICY 🥵, the romance is swoon-worthy and the plot twists and surprises?! OH. MY. GOSH?!

Also, Mama Lucy ❤️. That’s all I have to say, when you read it, you’ll know 🖤

This is book three in the series, while I haven’t read the others, I definitely feel like you can pick this up and not feel completely lost. I cannot wait to read the others, if they were anything like Deception & Daylight, IM IN! 🥰

If you haven't, I highly recommend reading the other Oak Ridge books in the series. I have fallen so in love with Oak Ridge, I want to move there. I want a friend group and supportive community like this. This 3rd book in the series is absolutely no different. In books 1 & 2 plus the novella, the suspense for Mags and Miles was building. The friction, tension, and banter. All of it. Some books build up characters and then flop. I did not get that from this. I was kicking my feet, gasping, and just as in love with them. Each book I have read from Willa Kay, I think it's my favorite, and she can't possibly do better. Boy, is she proving me wrong. This has now become my favorite. Deceptions and Daylight not only has the romance you've come for, but healing, life changes, and cozy vibes. The spicy scenes had me fanning my face! There's mystery thrown in there as well, which makes it all that much better. I spotted some newer characters that I'm hoping we will get more of in the future! I highly recommend this series. Please read the trigger warnings as there are some heavy plot things. The acknowledgments area had me teared up as well. 10/10 recommend!

💕ARC review!💕

❗️While this book does not go into detail, please make sure you check the trigger warnings in case before reading. ❗️

This book may be my favorite of this series so far!! I absolutely adore Mags and I’m glad we got to see the story behind her interactions with Miles in the previous books.

Miles is probably my favorite book boyfriend from this series- he’s protective, funny, dominant, sexy, and so kind. He truly worships Mags and tries to get her to see that he will always be there for her to help her and support her. Their banter was so fun to read and I loved the sweet (and the spicy!) moments!

Seeing Mags go through the healing process from the event that makes her escape to Oak Ridge was one of my favorite parts of this book. Everyone rallying around her to help as well in their own ways and being her support system was really important to see as well.

I also loved seeing all of the characters from the previous books as well and it basically being a continuation and not a separate story like some series can seem!

Thank you to Willa for the advanced copy, all thoughts and opinions are my own!

Wow wow wow this book has my absolute heart! The main characters of this story captivated me like no other, miles is just incredible the ultimate dream of a man and mags i love her, I really felt her struggle and loved reading her journey it was so beautifully written and this had me going through all the emotions, legs kicking, giggling away at the banter between them. Honestly cannot wait for others to get their hands on this and read it, I found myself literally spending my free time thinking about the story itself and what was going to happen next when I had to put the book down and join the real world, it is a love story that will stay with me for a really long time I just wish the story never had to end I loved it so much I never wanted it to be over, I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who like me loves a contemporary romance with small town vibes it will have you going through all the emotions alongside the characters their ups and downs but the journey is so worth the ride

I was going to give this book five stars except for two things:
1) There were a lot of typos. Page 321 has a whole paragraph in the wrong spot. The last paragraph on the page is also at the top of the page so its on there twice. It took me so long to figure out what was going on and it wouldn't have been so bad except its during a dramatic moment and kind of ruined it for me.
2) Birth control is NEVER mentioned. For a couple who doesn't want kids, neither of them ever mentioned condoms, the pill, an IUD, etc. Miles never used a condom. Mags never says or thinks anything about being on birth control. As someone who is childfree, that is 100% not realistic. They were having sex like people who either wanted a kid or didn't care about getting pregnant. That really bothered me and took me out of the moment every time they had sex.

I liked Miles and Mags as characters and I loved the other two books in this series. I don't know if the author was feeling rushed to get this one out or what because the other two didn't have any problems like this one does.

If you’re looking for a new romance to try- this is it.
One word to describe this book: obsessed.
Let’s start with how much Mile’s loves Mag’s, because even on her worst days he’s obsessed and it’s amazing. The slow burn tension was written so so so well. The typewriter scene (IYKYK)- easily one of my favorite spice scenes ever.
FINALLY getting to find out why Mile’s & Mag’s disliked each other was… MIND-BLOWING. I was so far off with every one of my guesses.
There is of course still some trauma for our FMC particularly to be aware of, but her journey following it is articulated so well. The feelings and thoughts are so realistic and IMO accurate, I just wanted to give Mag’s a big hug myself.
If you’ve read any of the Oak Ridge books this far you NEED to read this. If you haven’t, you’ll definitely still enjoy it but you won’t have the bittersweet turmoil of wanting to know what is going on with these two for 2.5 books prior.
Each book just continues to get better!

✨ARC Review✨

If you like small town romance and found family but haven’t made your way to the oakride series yet I’m telling you Miles Barlow is everything and you need him in your book boyfriend list.

This book follows Maggie and Miles and its a dislike to love with fake dating, hidden idenity and a boy obsessed.

While this is a small town contemporary romance there are some dark themes amongst these pages as part of Maggies story and I do encourage you to read Willa’s note to check your warnings and read responsibly.

This story really exceeded all my expectations and pulled on my heart strings. The way Miles showed up for Maggie when she needed someone and the way he was always obsessed with her just was everything.

“I asked you who you belong to,” he whispers, resting his forehead against mine. “But I got it all wrong,”

“What do you mean?”

“You never belonged to me, baby. But I have ALWAYS belonged to you.”

Maggie and Miles’ story is heartbreaking, healing and just absolutely perfect. I have been waiting for this for what feels like forever and it blew my expectations out of the water. The love Miles has for Mags is one of the most beautiful and soul healing loves I have ever read about. Mags’ love for Miles is complicated and messy, but it’s pure. I fell in love with both of these characters in book 1 of the series and reading their story and seeing the love, support, heartbreak, trauma, and everything in between that they go through was healing in a way I didn’t know I needed. I cried, I laughed, I was screaming and just every emotion that you would expect to feel came out tenfold. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Thank you so much Willa for the opportunity to read this book prerelease. I am obsessed with it, and I can’t wait to be back in Oak Ridge with the gang soon.

I’m a sucker for found family which is probably what keeps bringing me back to this series if I’m totally honest😂

I’ve been rooting for Miles & Maggie since book 1 and I was so excited for this book and it did not disappoint! This one felt like way more of an emotional roller coaster start to finish than the first 2 books did and I mean that in the best way possible.

There is a specific trope I’m not a fan of that was used in this book in a way that did not feel 100% necessary or genuine to the character development that had happened up to that point and that is the only thing keeping this from being a 5-star read for me.

Definitely check the trigger warnings on this one, there’s a few big ones💚

Each of Willa’s books get better and better and this one was phenomenal! I was hooked from the get go. I have been wanting Miles and Maggie’s story since book one and it did NOT disappoint. One of my favorite things about Willa’s books is that while there is spice there is also so much more. There is an amazing plot, pasts traumas that need to be healed, drama, banter, comedy, angst, and love. So much love. I also love that while each book focuses on a new couple you still very much follow the past books main couples too as there is an amazing friend circle that I am jealous of. To be that close with a great group of people… I don’t have words. Please never give up writing Willa. You have found your calling

This book might be called Deception and Daylight, but it’s a story of recovery and redemption. Miles and Mags enter into a fake dating relationship not expecting how much the other might help their healing from traumas. It’s full of emotion but also so many funny and sweet moments. If you love small town vibes and experiencing all the feels, this could be for you. (This book is book 3 of an interconnected standalone series. It can be read as a standalone, but there are references that will be better understood if you read the other books first.)

Thank you to the author for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

More like 4.5⭐️ This book encapsulated almost all the feelings and realities. I highly encourage you read the TW before starting.

There was vulnerability, trauma, friendships, broken parent relationships, hardships, and romance. The characters were relatable, written in a way that can be seen in real life. Mags was a strong character even after all she’s been through. Miles was an anchor, all while going through his own problems. Together, they complete each other— tension, banter, denial, pining and all the spice!! The twist had me pausing, needing to process. An emotional, romantic read! Easy recommendation.

Trigger warning on this one - the FMC is the victim of assault, both physically and it alludes sexually as well. I liked how this character was written as she was presented as outspoken and even bawdy in the previous two books. Her navigation through the emotional aftermath of a violent crime was well written. I liked the MMC very much and saw his struggle with decisions long past and the regret he carried despite it being lose/lose. I actually think the true love story was between Mags and Lucy - it was lovely to see someone without family be so embraced by a mother, especially considering all she was recovering from.

Willa did it again and I ate this book UP!!!!

Miles the man that you are!!! I loved the tension, obvious chemistry, and sweet and tender moments throughout this book. This was the perfect read for someone who loves a dislike to lovers, found family, child free by choice, and all around emotional read. Miles and Mags were the best couple to read about. I am so ready for the next book.

The way I want to be able to climb into this book and live in Oak Ridge is killing me!! The way Willa writes her stories and is able to evoke such raw emotions in one sentence and then make you laugh out loud in the next is real talent. I felt like I actually knew Miles and Maggie and again, I so wish they were real and I could be friends with them and the rest of the crew.

I will say that Deception and Daylight can be read as a stand alone but is best read in order of publication because there are so many characters to remember and keep straight.

I highly highly recommend this book but please be aware that it does contain Physical and Sexual assault (Off Page and not between MC's) so if this is something that may or does bother you please be aware before reading.

Thank you so much Willa for Sending me an ARC in Exchange for my honest review. I can't wait to read what you write next!
