My husband absolutely loved pandas and when we found this book, he had to have it! We didn't have kids but we both loved this sweet story about a panda who keeps a special secret from his mom. It's a very short, simple to read Little Golden Book that kids should love. The illustrations are very sweet and colorful as well.
While I totally loved this book as a child, (at least I think I did, as I kept it in a box with some other books until adulthood,) now that we know that people who molest children are usually known to the child rather than strangers, most anti-abuse education stresses the importance of not keeping secrets from one's parents. And while the "secret" in question here is actually a surprise (ie something that is told to some people and will include everyone later on,) the book does not lend itself to editing. Between the title and lines like, "...he likes it when someone tells him a secretm. He likes to feel that special secret whisper-tickle in his ear." And "so when his grandma told him a secret one morning, he didn't tell anyone else." This would send kids mixed messages and is probably a dangerous read.
An excellent way to start the conversation about secret keeping and what is appropriate. I'll start with a positive secret experience about gifts that are revealed quickly. Later we'll talk about inappropriate secret keeping but I like this for a starting point!
Very cute picture book, with a great story. I recently re-found this book while shopping for gifts for my nephews, and it brought back such great memories of reading it while I was a child.
Thomas loved to look at this book while Dan read it to him... I don't know if it was the black and white of the panda or his father's voice, but it was definitely captivating!
