What happens when a bride ends up with the wrong groom?
In the tradition of New York Times bestseller Betina Krahn comes a sparkling new talent with a witty, passionate tale of a spinster wary of desire--and the charming rogue who's determined to change her tune....
A notorious rake's moment of weakness...
Wolfgang Hardwicke, the Earl of Northcliffe, is up to no good--as usual. So he isn't certain why he rescues the drunken gambler from a fight. And he never expects to be rewarded with a heavenly, all-too-brief glimpse of the gambler's exquisite sister, clad only in her nightgown. Nor does he guess that he'll see her again, lighting up a dull party as she plays piano with a rapturous expression--an expression Wolfgang would like to see in decidedly different circumstances....
An independent beauty's dangerous liaison...
Unlike her admirer, Miss Grizelda Fleetwood is an unabashed do-gooder, one who has as soft a heart for her ne'er-do-well brother as for the unfortunates she helps. Though Zel has no interest in matrimony, she's determined to marry to save her family from financial ruin. That is, if she can find a suitable match before the unprincipled and relentless Earl of Northcliffe ruins her reputation...or steals her defenseless heart.
The Wedding Chase is a sweet story that has it all: drama, romance, hilarity, and surprises. Loved it!
The idea of the story is fairly standard in the world of historical romance, but the author doesn't keep it that way. She turns the used idea of a rake falling for a good girl into an original story that no one can call standard.
Zel was one hell of a character. She was so fun, and I adored her. Zel might be slightly crazy (you'll see why I say that) but it only makes you love her more. She refuses to let society run her life and lives exactly as she wants to. She's spent her life since her mom's death taking care of her father and brother-both of whom are reckless gamblers. She takes on the finances of the entire family to keep them afloat. I really admired her for that. Not only is she strong for managing everything that her gambling father won't, but she still would do anything for her brother and father. Besides that, her slightly crazy antics are hilarious. For example, she finds Wolfgang in her room one night and she doesn't want him there (yet). What does she do? She punches him and gives him a black eye. I swear, I burst out laughing during that part. Zel was a lovely character. I adored her.
Wolfgang was equally wonderful. For one thing, I love his name. It's a little strange, but it seems to fit him very well. He's very sweet. Even while he's still chasing her and he claims he has no feelings for her, he does everything he can to make sure nothing happens to her reputation. When he finally realizes that he's in love with Zel, he is the epitome of sweet. Of course, he doesn't come across that way at first. In the beginning, he is unrepentant in trying to seduce Zel. And he's not below taking every chance he has to get closer. But I loved both sides of him. He's handsome, charming, and sweet. In other words, he is perfect.
The story goes by fast, despite the length of it. The story takes off right away and doesn't drag or fall into any dull moments. The ending was perfect. Not only is it happy, but the last scene is hilarious and seems to sum up the relationship between Zel and Wolfgang: wild.
The Wedding Chase is wonderful, absolute perfection.
Everything's just a little too "out there" in this romance - he's Wolfgang, she's Grizelda. He has a giant cat who's too smart for her own good. She has a giant dog who. . . you get the idea. Oh, and he's also being stalked and attacked by some nefarious type - could it be her brother?
Wolf, the hero, is given to odd Satanic oaths, exclaiming about Lucifer's butt-checks or Satan's stocking feet. Zel is, of course, absolutely perfect in every way: selfless (she, alone, keeps her abusive and spendthrift family from debtor's prison but now must contemplate making a marriage in order to pay off her lousy brother's latest round of insane gambling debts), beautiful (in an unconventional manner, of course) and talented. Oh, and passionate, but really only about Wolf who finds that he, too, is wildly passionate for this girl, excuse, me, this woman who he must have and, well, maybe marry, even though his first marriage ended badly. . . .
There are too many improbably subplots, wacky hijinks and unusual characters for this to read as anything but an improbable story. I forced myself to finish it so I could find who was behind the whole attack storyline (so unimpressed there) and add it to my finished list but it felt as if I was reading this book forever and a day, rather than ten!
Wolfgang Hardwicke, the Earl of Northcliffe, has met his match with Grizelda Fleetwood. He sees the tall, well formed lady and sets his sights to seduce her to his bed. Being an opinionated, bluestocking woman, she doesn't surrender to the game. I liked these two characters who try to outwit the other in tactics. The chase is on, so to speak, to see who surrenders first. The author did a fine job on keeping the pace with clever innuendos and hot scenes.
It was a pretty typical plot and all really, with a few small twits in it, but ultimately it was very predictable. But it was also entertaining, I found myself wanting to know how else the two characters could make more of a fix, and who the bad guy really was. I suppose it really wasn't the most original idea, but I mean really there are only so many ways to spin the idea or love unrequited and then realized when it matters most. Still it was entertaining.
It was the funniest historical romance book I ever read. Some parts I laughed until I cried.
The part were she punched him in the gut then the eye was understandable - he was naked in her bed and they just met - and very funny, but the one where they kissed and she scratched him was over the top and unnecessary.
This story was predictable, yet I liked it. For that I give credit to the wonderful characterization of the two leads. Both were too good to be true and I still loved them. Their romance was fun and funny!
Seriously, if you love your romance to have a bit of drama, comedy and move at a fast pace, I recommend this one.
What happens when a bride ends up with the wrong groom? In Rebecca Kelley’s witty, passionate tale of romance, sparks fly between an eligible lady who doesn’t trust her desires and the roguish suitor determined to prove her wrong.
Wolfgang Hardwicke, the Earl of Northcliffe, is up to no good, as usual. He doesn’t know why he comes to the aid of a drunken gambler. He certainly isn’t expecting to be rewarded with a glimpse of the gambler’s exquisite sister—and yet one glimpse is not enough. So Wolfgang is absolutely thrilled to see her again, lighting up a dull party as she plays piano. But to win this glorious musician’s hand, the notorious rake will have to change her tune—fast.
Miss Grizelda Fleetwood has no interest in romance—she’s only marrying to save her family from financial ruin. That is, if she can find a suitable match before the unprincipled and relentless Earl of Northcliffe ruins her reputation. Unlike her not-so-secret admirer, Zel is an unabashed do-gooder with a soft spot for those in need. But if Zel is too generous with Wolfgang, she might find herself walking down the aisle with the one man she never expected—a husband she loves with all her heart.
