The Dragonwall Saga #4

Koldis the Green

Rate this book
The forest is dying, the kingdom is at war, and Claire’s magic is their only hope.

Claire understands that the key to defeating Kane lies in mastering her magic. She must venture deep within the Gable Forest, seeking the ancient knowledge of the elusive sprites. But the forest is not what it once was. A dark sickness is spreading, warping both the land and its creatures. She must master her growing magic before it’s too late. If she fails, both the forest and the kingdom will fall.

Meanwhile, King Talon and his inner circle find unexpected allies in the dwargs, who pledge their strength to reclaim Fort Squall. But the stakes are higher than ever. Talon needs a secret weapon to protect Squall’s End and stand any chance of reconquering the fort.

As things intensify, Claire and Talon’s paths converge. She’s not the same girl anymore—she’s more powerful, more dangerous, and determined to end the war. But can they turn to each other in the face of overwhelming odds? Or will their choices tear them apart?

Koldis the Green is the fourth installment of The Dragonwall Series, where the war is far from over and the battle for the kingdom’s future begins now.

Melissa Mitchell is a fantasy romance author best known for her seven-book Dragonwall series.

She fell in love with fantasy at a young age after discovering The Dragonriders of Pern, and she’s been chasing dragons, magic, and epic love stories ever since. Her books often feature beloved tropes like hidden royalty, slow-burn romance, and the undeniable tension of only one bed.

When she’s not writing, Melissa holds a PhD in physics and works as an optical engineer. She lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband, a husky, and four very spoiled bunnies. She also enjoys baking cookies, bullet journaling, and figure skating—usually while thinking about her next book.

I will pick this up later maybe. Right now it's boring and very repetitive. I might have flavor fatigue in this series and need a breather. I don't know. It's just dragging so slowly. The other books were good and I could not stop reading them. This is the exact opposite.

I don’t think that this series need introduction in my profile. I have read and reviewed all three previous instalments in the series and my love for Dragonwall is known to those who follow me some time now.

In this book, we see the story from Koldis’ perspective. We delve a bit further into the story and also into other characters that we find in the spotlight in this book.

The world building is once more amazing. I love the way it is presented and how magic works. I love the way Melissa is ‘feeding’ us pieces of the greater story and how these pieces slowly fill in the gaps and the background plot.

The romance is forever present in the series but I like that is not central-built but compliments the fantasy parts. Every book focuses on a different romance so I’ll leave it to you to discover by reading the book ;)

Disclaimer: Please remember that these are my opinions and if you feel differently, that’s okay. Thanks!

Notes: POV = 3rd person, multiple POVs, with heavy focus on Esterpine, the Sprite realm, and the political and magical dynamics there.
Overall: The scope stays wide with new settings, lore, and political intrigue. The pacing slows in places due to long recaps and info dumps. The forest and Sprite culture add a fresh dynamic, though some plot elements feel inconsistent with the rules previously established.

Main Characters: I found that Claire is at her most dramatic here, with constant hyperbole that sometimes undermines her otherwise strong role. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the time we spent with her in this book. I feel like we spent significantly less time with Talon than we have in previous books but the action in this one made that a sacrifice that I brushed past easily. Koldis is one of my favorite shields, so it was really nice to get some more chapters focused on him.

Side Characters: The King Tree is oddly charming and memorable. Some things in this one feel off, like they’re plot armour and feel forced to me (but that could just be me). Cat’s arc works as a redemption shift, even if she is not truly redeemed. Her fit with the ship’s crew makes sense to me and I like her there, even if she never really received justice.

Plot/Story: I know that this book had to happen, that Claire had to get the training she needs for the next three books (I can’t believe there’s only three left! And the last two will BOTH be out this year!) I’m glad that things aren’t unrealistically easy for her. The revelations about Isabella’s cruelty toward the Drengr continue to amaze me, it really is shocking considering that she is known to be about balance and all that (but clearly, is more selfish than she is remembered).

Romance: The shield romances are hard to invest in since the rules make them doomed. Bryon and Tamara’s relationship is more satisfying, echoing the warmth of Bryon’s parents.

General: The “previously on” style recap at the start is frustrating. It might have been useful when the books were released far apart, but now it interrupts momentum for anyone reading the series back to back.

Koldis the Green by Melissa Mitchell is the fourth book in The Dragonwall Series. This book begins with Claire being in the forest to learn more about her magic, but she learns that the forest is dying. There are pockets of decay around the forest and it is affecting the animals as well. As this is going on, King Talon gets news that some of the dwargs are willing to join the fight against the dragons, as well as fighting Kane. A plan is developed to take back Fort Squall. But he needs to figure out how to protect the people of Squall's End from being attacked. But can they defeat the dragons, as well as protect the city at the same time?
I loved this book. Claire grows even more as a person through learning more about her magic. I also loved Claire's secret teacher because he is so curmudgeonly that it is funny. I love that the relationship between Claire and Talon becomes more intensifying. Koldis is still one of my favorite characters. He is so good at helping to cut tension around him that you can't help but appreciate him. Overall, I loved this book and gave it 5 stars.

The Sprites, 4.25 Stars, Wow!⭐️🦄🌳🌿🌹
Koldis The Green: The Dragonwall Series, Book 4
By: Melissa Mitchell
Read Using Kindle Unlimited

I'm devasted that there isn't an audiobook for this book.😢💔

Talon, having finally agreed to Claire going to the Sprites for training and to learn her true lineage, decides Koldis is the best suited of his 'Shields' to accompany her!

Her training is going to take months. It can't be rushed, though, and Princess Taylynn, Queen Jade's oldest child and Heir, has decided she'll aid her!Koldis finds her utterly infuriating. 😆

It's initially slow going. It almost seems like the Queen may be trying to hinder her. Then Taylynn steps in, and all sorts begins to occur.🤩

Back at the Kings castle, they're making plans to retake Byron and Tamara's home!🤞

Will Claire ever get to the bottom of her magic, the blight in the forest, and find the 'King Tree'?🌴🌿

This was fantastic, but it would've been 100% more enjoyable with an audiobook. 😢

Incredible- in absolute awe of the work Melissa Mitchell provides! The ability to go onto book 4 (Koldis) and still continue to build a slow burn with not only the FMC and MMC but with other characters as well.

This series starts with what we believe to be multiple side stories or quests that start weaving intricately and beautifully. The characters continue to develop and grow on the reader.

This book (at this time) is my favorite in the series! So much banter, yearning, and moments that make the reader feel giddy, butterflies, warm and fuzzy inside. Followed by moments shock and relief. All of the things every book should do to pull you in.

This is a 5 star read-hands down 🙌🏽

Book 5 ( Beldeth) is on deck! (I would binge but Jovari is just preordered and what if there’s a cliff hanger…)

These books get better with each one! Koldis is a sweetheart. I love his sense of humour, especially around Claire and his fellow Shields. In this book Claire has to venture in the Sprite Glade Forest reigned over by Queen Jade to learn about her sprite magic in hope that it will help her in the fight against Kane. There she meets with various Sprite mages who help teach her Sprite magic as she is an ancestor of Princess Ileria. Koldis is sent with her to protect her, where he meets Princess Taylynn, Queen Jade's daughter and sparks fly! Taylynn is an enigma, a beautiful sprite many years old who he is frustratingly attracted to.
I love the world building in this. Even though Claire and Talon are far apart, their love is kept alive by romantic, yet funny letters between them. Claire has to decide what she wants from their romance.

Oh, my God. I can't even.

I have found here a naturally badass FMC that does not come across as a try-hard. I think Claire might be... wait, let me think... yes, Claire might be the first FMC that I truly love. She is smart, she is strong, she is growing...

The development of Koldis here.... ugh, Koldis might be my favorite shield so far...

Spending time in Esterpine, the sprite forest is such a beautiful world... Walking around the forest, caressing unicorns, and singing vines to life... Yes, I am here for it.

Jeanine's story, I am looking forward to how it continues developing...

How unexpected the development of Caterina!

Des has come so far too!

I am deeply worried for each and every character as war looms big.

I want to start with I'm more of an instant gratification reader. And this burn is sooo slow. I'm loving all the side characters. Well, I mean the shields and sprite characters. I understand Bennet and Mikkin, plus "dumb old" Kane storylines are sort of important, but I don't enjoy them.

But this 7 book series is working for me. A lot of series lose steam, but I have to say this story keeps getting better. I love how much Claire and Talon have grown. Watching the shields find love/mates has been fun. So much happened in this book. Cannot wait to see what book 5 holds.

5 ⭐️

I absolutely loved this series. I waited until I read all 7 before leaving a rating on any to get a full view. I knew after the first one I was going to love it, but I had no idea just how much. This is one of those series that you wish you were able to restart again and again and reread not knowing what happens. I loved the writing style, balance, storytelling, and development in these books. I’m glad that book 7 wrapped very characters story up and allowed the reader to have a look into how their lives played out.

This is the 4th in the series and this time Claire must travel back to the Gable Forest to learn about her past. She finds the forest has dark areas now, it is dying. But, what is spreading the sickness through the forest.

As Claire learns more magic, and though she loves her time with the sprites, she longs to return to Dragonwall and to King Talon. Dragonwall is fighting to keep their kingdom as the dragons will return again.

Another great one in the series that I could not put down!!!

OMG this is definitely one of my favourite books of the series so far!! Mitchell’s writing is just getting better and better, it’s such a joy to read these books.
I was hesitant knowing that Talon and Claire didn’t have too many scenes together but OMG now I don’t even know why because the book was amazing and the scenes they did have together? impeccable !!

Need the next book to be fully uploaded already!!

This series has me completely enthralled. The badass FMC became even more badass, I’m loving everything second of it. A few of the side characters got into my nerves, because I wasn’t that interested in what they were doing, but I still ended up enjoying the little extra snippets. I’m afraid that I’m building up too many expectations, but it has been so freaking amazing so far. I’m dying to know what will happen next.

Loved it!

I wasn't sure how well I would enjoy this book being a seven book series, but so far it's SO good! There's a lot going on while following many different characters, so there is plenty going on to keep my interest. Mitchell does a fantastic job organizing the plot so it's not overwhelming or confusing at all. Each location and each storyline are very specific and unique, so it's easy to keep everything organized in my brain. I love it so far... highly recommend!

This is probably one of my favorite epic fantasys' since "Throne of Glass", and tops my top five for epic series.. I devoured it as fast as possible. The first three books are available on audible and all are available on Kindle unlimited.

Outstanding characters and world building! I did both audible and ebooks. The books have a map and pictures that help when understanding all the towns visited by different characters.

The series starts urban then moves to epic with multiple points of view. Its ok for teens until book three when starts low spice for a few slow burn relationships and gradually picks up on spice in the later books.

I love how the author did the last two books and it answers all the follow on questions you have when a series ends. That really makes this series stand apart from others, and with the unique storyline you are captivated.

Outstanding!

Love all the characters!

The characters, the banter, the found family all continue to bring me back to Dragonwall. I love this story, and all the different paths we get to follow to what I know will be an ultimate battle. The world building and twists and turns are truly inspiring and uplifting. Good versus evil is the ultimate battle and this story gives that and then some.

A good addition to the series

This was a good addition to the series. It took me a while to get into it. The start was dreadfully slow but it picked up and became rather interesting. There was a lot of character growth and more fantastic world building and I look forward to reading the next book.

This series never ceases to amaze me so far! I am soooo thankful that Caterina wasn’t trying to turn Claire over to Kane. But instead she wanted him to take back his magic. I was scared when she took off to where he’d be. I think the redemption arc she’ll have with Bennett on lady faith is going to be a great story!

Great series

It would be helpful to add a list in the front of each book with a description of the main characters and, if applicable, their mates. There are so many moving pieces, I started my own cheat sheet to help me keep track of the characters.

Enjoying this series immensely.

So much growth!

Claire's journey has been so much fun to read. The character growth from all parties has been been a Rollercoaster but I'm so here for it. Koldis is one of my favorites. His snark, wit, protection of Claire, and his feud with the sprite princess are entertaining. I'm so excited for the next book to continue on this adventure

Yes it is a slow burn But you’ll soon be wrapped up with the side intricacies of all characters. Mitchell builds a world up through her characters and their views against good and evil.

Spice alert

Unfortunately this book had some spice which I was not expecting and it was totally unnecessary. There are also hints of homosexuality, which I also found to be unnecessary. I would never had picked these books had I known.

Dragonwall

Lordy lordy the emotional highs and lows, twists and turns, constant build, mates found, relationships forged, alliances made and intense chemistry. Not much more you could ask for in a book. Can't wait to see where this is all going.

The war is coming

So much happens, Claire is learning about gaining her Sprite powers; lots of planning for attacking the dragons at a fort they have taken over; and new relationships developing. Again, the illustrations are beautiful, the colors vibrant.
