Kate Freeman opened the front door of her vacation villa to a wolf in sheep’s clothing. A few moments later, fifty thousand paralyzing volts shot through her body. Her world went dark; and when she awoke, her family was torn apart forever. After months of agonizing physical therapy to heal the vicious wounds to her body, the Kate who emerged was no longer the loving mother, sister, and friend from before. The Kate who survived was something much different. Something much darker. Without hesitation or remorse, she will hunt down the men who destroyed her life, even if it means sacrificing her last shreds of humanity. She will make them suffer. There are books and then there are books that blow you away. This is one of them. Man! I was not expecting that! This book will stay with me forever. I absolutely loved every single aspect of it. Not what I expected, so much more. Gush, gush, gush.

This book is DARK and GRAPHIC with torture and kill scenes, this never bothers me in books but it seems very intense in this one but it needs to be, but if you can't cope with that stuff stay away. The rest of you, go out and get it.
What a plot! Kate survives a cruel and sadistic attack in her own home much to the surprise of the killer, he is looking for her, but she decides to turn the tables on the game of cat and mouse. But there is so much more to this story.
Kate's character development in this book is nothing short of brilliant, from the beginning to the end you won't know her. Brilliantly done. This has it all, tight plot, fast paced action scenes, tension building drama, unexpected twists, mind twisting scenes and a finale that will leave you speechless.
If you like books with a vigilante twist and strong female characters you will love this. I guarantee you, you will be shocked and surprised by where this book takes you. One of my top reads so far for 2015. Highly recommended.
I received this book thanks to the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Holy smokes!!! This book is pure AWESOMENESS!!!!! I literally read this all, this afternoon. This story will pull you in and make you forget your surroundings in the first few pages. Its gripping and makes you feel like your on the edge of your seat. If you like thrillers that might make you hold your breath this is a great book. I need to look into reading more of this authors work in the future.
Wow, was not expecting this to be so good. Beware, this is not for the faint of heart. Ruthless torture mixed with evil insanity sets off a intence story of cat and mouse revenge. After a brutal attack on a happy, well off family, a close impenetrable group of family and retired law enforcement, embark on a mission to find, capture and exact revenge on a resourceful monster. Smart writing with exceptionally well rounded characters makes for an intense, satisfying story. I am looking forward to the sequel and more books in my library narrated by the talented Emily Sutton-Smith. For a reason unknown this book is no longer available on Audible but the narrated version is still available for purchase on Amazon.
An extremely interesting and fast paced story. How far would you go to seek revenge for the destroyer of your family. Is justice enough or do you need revenge. An excellent insite into our justice system...but does it work for everyone? I like this author. This is the second book I have read of his and hope to read more.
Suffer is a gritty and in-your-face thriller. It does not hold back on the gore and blood, and covers topics that include rape, torture and murder. It adds in the horrific element of what happens when this occurs to children - so is definitely not for those who have sensitivities around that.
The content is graphic, yes, but it's not outside the realms of normal for a crime/thriller story. Perhaps the newer edits have cut some of the issues other reviewers have mentioned; I did not find it too graphic, nor too disturbing.
The writing read well, and the pace seemed almost spot on (just a little slow in the middle). I'd have liked a little more foreshadowing of who the bad guy was, because it felt a little convenient even though the tie-in was reasonably set up, it just felt a little too easy.
Now let's turn to Grey and Kate... our two main characters. For the most part, I liked them, even the whole 'Kate is a darker version of herself after what happened'. Although I did start to feel like they were a bit too determined and a bit too focused. Where's the emotional breakdowns? They felt a little inhuman at times.
What didn't work for me was the attempt at a romance sub-plot between two characters. It stuck out like a sore thumb and was seriously not needed to make the story more appealing.
Stick to one genre or tie the romance in with a bigger part - it was superfluous as it currently reads.
Overall though, I enjoyed reading this graphic tale, especially because E.E. Borton did not shy away from exploring the darker side of things.

This is certainly not a work of any great literary prowess and I suspect it does not profess to be. Kate’s life is in chaos when she is brutally attacked in her home by a psychotic maniac and her son Caleb is horribly mutilated and murdered. As if this is not enough her husband Paul commits suicide as he cannot stand the pain or live without them......so just your normal every day occurrence in downtown US :)
But our Kate is a real “gutsy” lady and not only does she survive but with her trusty friends and, newly inherited immense wealth, sets up home in sunny Florida. From there she spends the rest of the book plotting to seek out and find the individual who destroyed her life and family.
This is an ok read, fast and fun which unfortunately begins to get a little “wordy” and lose direction in the middle third. The violence when it happens is quite graphic and bloody and the reader soon realizes he is heading for a gore feast at the invitation of Kate in her beautiful Florida home. Will Kate survive? Will the murderer be caught? Will the reader manage to get to the end without boredom setting in?...and most importantly will the sun keep shining in Florida? And what’s on telly tonight?
If you have a few hours to pass and require a little mindless entertainment then Suffer may just be the book for you. As the title suggests I began to feel the effects of suffering the longer I read and was very pleased when Kate reached the end of her mission........
Oh my giddy aunt! I was so enthralled in this story.
We have a woman and her son Kate and Caleb. They are at the home whist her husband Paul is out on a boat trip with his 2 friends.
A caller comes to the door.............. The action then heats up.
I tell you, I was reading some of the sentences between the gaps of my fingers, some are really brutally horrid but vital to the story. The trouble with me is, I have a very vivid imagination and so I see things in my minds eye in technicolor!!! This was SO good though.
I didn't expect half of what happened in this book. I thought one thing, then the author came up with something else. I was walking down the path with this story when A BOMB BLEW UP IN MY FACE it was WOW, I was NOT expecting that to happen.
I just don't know where E E Borton got his idea for this story but man....keep them coming. I feel so tired today, I've been reading some awesome books lately that I have been unable to go to sleep without finishing and this is one of them.
You need a bit of a strong stomach in places, some of its madness, utter madness, but in a good way.
I am so glad that Amazon Publishing via Net Galley has given me free access to their books or I may have missed this one.
If you love a fantastic thriller, if you like to bite your nails, if you don't mind sleepless nights and don't mind your head being full of "what happens next" then this is the book for you. Trust me.
Taking into account all the 4 and 5 star ratings, I had high expectations for this book, but I was quite disappointed. Suffer is a book about one woman (Kate) seeking revenge for the loss of her family. That part doesn't actually start until 50% into the book. To sum it up quickly, the beginning was totally gripping and pulled you in. The ending was a nice touch. The very long middle part was so contrived and unrealistic, I just wanted it to end. I do not mind suspending disbelief for a plot that is engaging and has well-developed characters, and I was not bothered at all by the graphic violence. But what I did not like was the stereo-typical FBI agent, the victim's sister who was nothing more than a sex object and her formulaic relationship with the FBI agent, the infinite pot of money the victim has access to for her revenge or the ease with which all the other people are pulled into her plan and how simple their search for the culprit was. There was no mystery and no suspense. I felt no emotional attachment to Kate at any time. She was just a one-dimensional character and seemed more of a side character in her own story because most of the attention was paid to the herculean FBI agent. 2 stars because the well-written first chapter and the twist at the end deserve some recognition. Glad I didn't pay for this.
Kate and her young son Caleb are attacked in their home. Against all odds Kate survives the attack but after months of revalidation she's not the same person any more. Driven only by her will to hunt the men down who did this to her family, she embarks (together with quite a large number of people) on a search to bring them to justice.
I read this book in a single train trip, so it definitely was a fast read. The premise is quite interesting, but I didn't like the execution (of this premise, not the actual execution) as much as I did in other books I read with similar themes like for example The Beast by Roslund & Hellström.
It's quite graphic when describing the murder of a child, this might put readers off, so just a quick warning. My biggest problem however was everyone's willingness to help Kate in her plan. I understand why Kate would be hellbound on getting revenge and that the others want to help her cope with everything, but they don't even seem to worry about the legal/moral consequences of what they're planning. One of them even is with the FBI and should definitely know better. What I expected were people conflicted about helping, but everyone accepts it really fast.
A quick read, but not a very memorable one.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Twice as fast and much more intellectually enchanting than his first novel . An amazing second novel in a year from a no longer first time author . Keeps the suspense and guess work going all the way to the end . I cannot wait to read more from this talented author . Now a 3rd novel out soon to be followed by a fourth .
This is some weird mix of romantic suspense (or really some older guy's age gap erotic fantasy) with overly graphic descriptions of rape and torture, and a really horrifying child death.
And the romantic suspense bit just seems clunky and weird in the middle of all the death and torture. Like, whoa they removed someones eyeball and dang you look good in a bikini.
As for the ending - again with the no. It's way over the top, unbelievable, and some parts are just...wrong.
An exciting intense book from the very first paragraph. Some of the things that happen are gruesome but just like you see and watch on the television or read in the news. The stubborn and determined woman who lost her son and husband in a home invasion spends all her energy in getting revenge. Exciting and suspenseful. I highly recommend."
This is one of those reads that starts out so great that you just want to solder the book to your hand, and never sleep. At least that is the case for the first hundred pages or so. You know the part with the murder of Caleb, the brutal rape and disfigurement of his mother, the untimely death of husband, Paul, and the decision by everyone left to do whatever it takes to find the person or people responsible.
At first, you think that things are going to be all about FBI Agent Grey Collins. Best friend to both Kate and Paul and uncle to poor Caleb. That notion is soon squashed however, when local law enforcement and the FBI, say that they want him no where near the case. So he gets to stand around playing 'tough guy in the waiting room' while Kate is fighting for her life in surgery. Making matters worse for Grey is the unneeded aggravation of 'little sister'/pain in the ass Abby. Who insists that Grey should be doing more...blah...blah...blah!
The real fun, and story begins with Kate! She is one tough lady. Once she wakes up...whoa boy, so does the story! In the interest of not getting all spoilery. Let's just say that Kate is a big believer in 'if you want something done right, do it yourself!'
This is a very gripping and emotionally taxing read for the most part. There is a big lull in the action somewhere around mid point where detours are taken for a romance break that blind legions could have seen coming but...oh well. There is also this very disturbing few pages during the first part of Kate's plan where all the people who are supposed to be guarding her seem to be guarding the magic whiskey bottle that keeps appearing more so than Kate.
More time spent...another 100 pages uncovering the who's and why's of the whole thing. Blah... But then! Halleluiah! The last 3 chapters of revenge heaven, and just like that! Love for this story is once again in the air.
This is not a story for the faint of heart. The scenes of violence are very graphic, and some do involve the death of a child, as well as the deaths and /or mutilation/rapes of people. There is also consensual sex to a lesser degree. If you are a person who loves a great 'take things into your own hands' thriller with pretzel-like plot twists and scenes of murder and mayhem that would make the creators of Criminal Minds blush. Look no further than Suffer.
What if someone came into your home, brutally attacked you, raped you in front of your child and then made you watch as you that person killed your child? This is Kate’s reality as her once perfect life comes shattering down. The killer thinking that Kate is dead, underestimated her determination and drive to find him and make him suffer for his wrong doings. Suffer brings the old adage ‘an eye for an eye’ to a whole new disturbing level and I liked it a lot.
Suffer is one of those books that after reading the last sentence, I was left wondering what the hell did I just read? This story is very dark and very twisted and although I wanted to stop reading, I just couldn't put this book down. It kept me on the edge of my seat all the way to the very disturbing end. Suffer is not for the faint of heart as the author’s very vivid descriptions of the brutally violent and utterly gruesome acts left me emotionally and physically ill. Despite the horrific, gruesome and gory scenes, this is a well-crafted thrilling masterpiece I wanted to continue so that I could find out how it would end.
With a highly suspenseful, gripping plot and well-developed characters, Suffer kept me captivated and intrigued throughout. If you are looking to reading something dark and twisted, then I highly recommend reading this fascinating and frightening book. Just be warned that you will want to drop everything and keep turning the pages because you will not want to put this one down even for a second. This is the first book I have read from this author, but it will definitely not be my last.
Suffer ye not! This is certainly not a work of any great literary prowess and I suspect it does not profess to be. Kate Freeman experiences the unimaginable (though it's described in vivid, grisly detail) when an intruder invades her home while she's there alone with her son, Caleb, as her husband Paul is out with his buddies on his boat. Left for dead, her once fantastic life is completely destroyed. When she wakes up in horrible condition, she has but one goal -- the burning desire for retribution and revenge. Kate will do anything she must do to find the perpetrator and she will use everyone to that end. But first, she needs to get stronger, build her fortress, and prepare to take back her life.
Although the premise was good, so much annoyed me. The characters were so unbelievable and predictable. The romance was lame. The scenario was unrealistic and, although I could totally understand the motivation, hard to imagine that all of those involved would act as described. It was an anxiety-provoking read, but again, required a lot of suspension of disbelief though I must admit I nodded my head at the climax. After all, as one of the characters points out -- if criminals saw THIS, crime would go way down.
I'd read another by this author as I like the chiller, thriller genre. Be prepared, it does have a lot of description of torture and other heinous acts.
Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing for the e-book to review.
I received an ARC from the Publisher and NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This story starts out with a POW! The story was intense from the opening paragraph right up to the best ending I have read in a long, long time.
E.E. Borton knows how to write a story that is horrifying, gruesome and simply explosive. The heroine is a strong woman and a survivor against all the odds. The day she innocently opens the door to a man wearing a Florida State Police uniform showing a badge and telling her, her husband Paul met with an accident. She lets him in and her nightmare begins. Waking up in the hospital weak and barely alive she learns she not only lost her young son but her husband Paul is also gone.
Her family and close friends gather around this woman who is fighting to recover from injuries that her doctors were unsure she could survive. She fights to regain her strength once she is out of the hospital her search begins for the man who destroyed her life and took away the 2 most important people in her world. Her husband and her young son.
I absolutely could not put this book done. This story was so well done and I hope that this is not the end of Kate and her group.
I highly recommend this read to anyone who enjoy a well written mystery/thriller.
My Review. Possible spoilers. Wow, great book, with a cracking start that really pulls you in, so much that I read the whole book in only one sitting. There are gruesome moments, so if you are squeamish you might want to skip parts. The plot is great, with loads of thrills, dark moments, but on the whole; the story is what would you do for your child? In this case, revenge, it is a great book, loads of action with a few quiet moments between the main characters which I didn´t enjoy fully. Kate is a strong willed character, scary in a way. The author does a great job of writing and describing in horrific detail of the attack. There were a couple of moments that you might question what Kate does, I certainly did, but I also understood her motives. This is one of those books that have a fantastic ending, what a cracker, loved it. Highly recommended, specially if you enjoy dark thrillers This is the first book I have read from this author. Free copy from Netgalley. 4 ½ stars there is more information on my blog. click here
A thought provoking suspense story. True, this story will get you thinking. Not really about the suspense itself, which is pretty fair. Instead, you'll be thinking about the emotional vs. legal vs. ethical ramifications of what goes on here. Right from the start you are bombarded with a heinous crime. I'll go ahead and warn you, if you don't like to read about crimes that happen to children, this is probably not the book for you. It was almost the end for me, but I held on. This is an emotional book. Not so much because of the characters. While nicely described, they don't carry much weight with me as a reader and they blended into the scenery. I never connected with any of them. What held my attention was the recovery and subsequent revenge taken by one of the main characters. You are bombarded with emotions from deaths to suicides to homicides and more. It's a brutal book for sure. Sometimes maybe a bit too much for some. It is a tough read, and describes situations that hopefully none of us ever have to face. Would you make the same decisions? I'm still making up my mind even days later. This one will stay with you.
Where have I been? I mean Mr. Borton is my type of author. I could not stop reading this book. The story was not so much about the gruesome acts of the murders; although the ordeal that Kate survived is horrible. So if you are weak in the stomach than this book may not be for you especially since it does talk about a child being murdered as well. Also there is some foul language used.
Another reader commented on how cold and distant the character felt. This is part of why I liked this book. Kate did feel cold but it is understandable after what she experienced. I thought this quality made her stronger. I was cheering for her the whole time. The way she and the rest of the character drew out the killer was great. Justice was served. This book ended on a high note. It indicates that I might see Kate again in the future. I really hope so. There was no suffering reading this book.
Oh my goodness! I loved this book. Disturbing but oh so good. Kate has a wonderful husband and adorable son. It's all taken away in an instant when a man dressed as a Florida trooper zaps her and rapes her in her own home forcing her son to watch and forces her to watch him kill her son. The man thought he killed her but did not know how strong she was... I will look for more of this author's work. Thanks for a great book!!
The day Kate Freeman opens her door to a sociopath disguised as police officer changes her life forever. Her son is murdered and she is left for dead with little hope of survival. This dark tale shows how far one woman will go to seek revenge. Although it was a good story, it is not for the squeamish and it did tend to drag in spots.
Oh my WOW!!! This book captured my attention from page one and never let it go. This writer knows how to tell a story. I cried, I laughed, I was angry, I felt justification. I enjoy reading a book in which the author gives the reader the freedom to use their own imagination instead of spelling out every little minute detail. Awesome book!
This isn't the type of book I would normally read but I had to read another one by this author. The book was fantastic. I couldn't put it down and when I did all I could do was think about reading it. It was also very disturbing and heart wrenching.
For the most part, this is a good book. It has a solid premise. The beginning section is hard to put down because it sucks you in.
One problem is with the characters that are hard to relate to. The author doesn't give us enough back story to feel a connection, so we have to try to connect with them as they are in the book.
That leads to the next problem: a challenge is that the point of view shifts often. The beginning of the book is kind of about Kate, who is attacked. Then it's about Paul who is traumatized by what has happened. Then it's about Grey, the FBI agent who isn't allowed to help out in the investigation. Toward the middle of the book, the focus sort of alternates between Kate and Grey, but then shifts to different characters. All of this lack of focus on one character makes it difficult to connect to anyone. Evan's character is the most confusing as he is Paul and Grey's best friend, but then he is later referred to as "son" and calls Grey "boss." His character struggles to be clearly identified.
The major theme in this book is "an eye for an eye." Characters are motivated because they feel the justice system continuously fails victims. Kate has been so wronged that characters leave their jobs so they can secretly seek retribution for her. This is a tough concept even though the author carefully tries to justify this philosophy. Some readers may not agree or like this.
Because of the lack of focus on point of view, the inability to connect to characters, and the really tough subject matter, I didn't enjoy this book as much as I wanted to. I was really excited to finish the book after the first 20%, but then it became difficult to read.
This is a painful read. A woman is raped and forced to watch her young son tortured and murdered. Left for dead by the sadistic killer she must fight for survival and revenge. Joining forces are a former police chief and a former FBI agent as well as her sister. But do they have what it takes to bring down a vicious killer.
I did not care for this book and I usually enjoy Death Wish type storylines. None of the characters are likable or sympathetic. While Kate's situation is tragic, she does not generate any sympathy. The story and motive are outlandish. Can't recomnend.
Suffer is an intense look into the mind of a victim of an unspeakable crime. I loved this book and all the fascinating characters. This is somewhat if a mystery in that you don't find out who the perpetrator is until close to the end but that's only part of the puzzle. What happens to the perpetrator by the heroine and her friends is the interesting part. This is a very dark book and may not be for everyone. If you like books where the bad guys get what's coming to them, then this book is for you!
The book was a page turner for me. I cou!d not put it down and read it in a day, which I normally do not do. The novel is well written and I will definitely be adding the author to my favorite list. It is a great thriller right to the end. I would recommend this author and novel. A very good read.
I have a two AM , side awake time. Reading a good book helped me relax and allows me to go back to sleep. This was one of those good reads . The book achieved it purpose. I enjoyed the characters and the plot. Recommend for this time of self isolation. Stay all and read some good books.
