From author Emily Blackwood comes a new dark and twisted romantasy about two powerful mystics and the forces that urge them together—even if they hate each other.

Athena is an earthly. She wields no power, and though war rages across the lands, she lives a relatively normal life in isolation until she’s kidnapped by the Ministry and questioned for the magic they’re certain she possesses.
As she struggles to grasp her new reality, she’s forced into a dungeon with dozens of mystics. Only to discover she’s the only female.
True unleashing of power can only be obtained by the claiming—a mating ritual under the powerful blood moon. But Athena is in luck. Those mating must be willing, and she is certainly not willing to come within a foot of any of her options.
Until she meets Sinner.
Sinner is a tier three—the only three in the entire dungeon, making him the most dangerous and powerful of the men. He has very little interest in getting along with others and prefers to live his life alone.
So it comes as a shock when he volunteers to complete the claiming with Athena. She’s his ticket out of that dungeon, and she knows it.
The two struggle for the upper hand as Sinner tries to convince Athena to mate with him willingly.
But Athena resists. She has a secret, and it’s one the Ministry would do anything to get their hands on.
Can she keep her secret hidden long enough to survive? Or is Sinner the one person who will expose her for what she truly is—a monster?

4.5 stars ⭐️ this book CONSUMED ME! the tension and slow burn in this book was EVERYTHING. dark dystopian romantasy with an FMC full of rage (my favourite kind) and dark MMC with a tortured soul ❤️‍🩹 (also my favourite kind). i am so invested in this story and these characters. i would have liked more information about the mystics/magic system/world building but other than that i absolutely ate this up.

𐔌 “She’s mine now. If you touch her again, I’ll kill you.” ୭ ˚. ᵎᵎ

⋮ ⌗ ┆ᢉ𐭩 Cringe? Sure. Already done by a 14 year old on wattpad? Oh, definitely. But, all in all, this was so much fun. I finished it within 24 hours and that in and of itself says something considering how busy I’ve been lately. Every page was something enticing, a reason to keep flipping. Yes, I had questions. There were moments where I rolled my eyes at an overused line or scoffed at a cliche but I did so with a smile on my face and pure bliss in my heart because truly, this book was a great time. Me, being the mood reader I am, recommend this to all of my girls who don’t quite like dark romance but don’t currently want something that’s all glitter and sparkles. As someone who isn’t fond of the whole dark romance thing but occasionally needs a break from the fluffy little romcoms, this satisfied the itch for something a couple shades darker than my usual vibrant happy pastel colored palette.

The book takes place in a world with the average Joe (normal people) and mystics, aka those with power. In this world, mystics are being hunted by the Ministry and held captive until the Ministry can successfully use them. Our main character, Athena, is taken… but she is not a mystic (ooo or is sheee). Despite insisting that she does, in fact, NOT have powers, she is thrown into the dungeon that carries all of the other mystics being held by the Ministry. Here, she meets Sinner (stop laughing at the name, you’ll learn to get over it!!) who is honestly, a jerk. To get out of the dungeon, the Ministry requires you to go through a claiming process (yeah.. basically some weird “mating” thing.. not great.. really not great actually), which fully unlocks your powers and makes you the absolute strongest you can be. I’m sure you can see where this is going, but actually no you can’t because there’s so many random little twists and by the end of the book, I’m like 99% sure that our girl Athena is still a virgin because Sinner (stop laughing at the name) is just soooo respectful but to be honest, I was getting a little delirious during this reading experience so I could be wrong.

⊹ ࣪ ˖ “Men loved to act tough, but in reality, everyone was someone’s little bitch.”

⋮ ⌗ ┆Athena ⋆˚꩜。
╰ To be honest, I really liked Athena!! She went through a lot within the contents of this book but throughout it all, she stayed stubborn and strong. She always remained herself, through it all. And that’s partially one of my complaints. Athena could’ve stayed true to herself while still being impacted by what all happened to her. I’ll give the author credit, Athena’s reactions to certain things were pretty realistic in the moment and Athena is a great character in my personal opinion, but I also wish that she actually mourned her family, who died in the very beginning of the book. It was hardly dug into how horrible she must feel or how she must miss them, and it was only addressed once that her new friend in the dungeon—Mags—reminded Athena of her little sister, Jasmine. That could have added so much to Athena’s character that I would’ve loved to see! But in general, I enjoyed her. I liked her perspective and found myself consistently rooting for her even when it came to the mmc, Sinner, whose thoughts we also got to see because this is a dual pov. Athena is strong, hotheaded, unafraid, and slightly chaotic.

⊹ ࣪ ˖ “If you go near her again, I’ll kill you.” I angled in closer and wrapped one hand around his neck. “If you so much as look at her, I’ll kill you. She’s mine, and you are nothing. You shouldn’t even be allowed to breathe the same air she does. Do you understand me?”

⋮ ⌗ ┆Sinner ⋆˚꩜。
╰ Stop laughing at the name. After you move on from the name and the constant waffling on about how Athena is “his” he’s really not that bad! No, Sinner is actually alright! I’ve always discussed my disappointment with the gloomy pouty morally grey cardboard box male leads that everyone fawns over, and while Sinner occasionally treaded the line, he passed my test. He has his own story, his own personal issues and personality that help me understand his character. In short, he actually HAS character traits instead of acting like a machine designed for the fmc. He’s got an attitude, and it continuously pissed me off. But, at least he didn’t bore me! I think he smiled TWICE in the entire book, and one was while he was annoying Athena.

⊹ ࣪ ˖ “He stepped to one side, dodging me easily. But my momentum slung me forward, making me stagger. And the guys around us actually laughed.
“Not bad,” he teased. “You were saying you’re a fighter?”
“I did not say that, I said I’ve fought here and there.”
Yeah, he was definitely smiling. “Well, try again.”

⋮ ⌗ ┆Sinner & Athena ⋆˚꩜。
╰ The romance was the main center of the book, and I’ll admit, I didn’t expect it to deliver. It was fun, the way they… did not like each other. I was mindlessly enjoying my day as they kind of just insulted each other when suddenly I thought to myself.. why do they hate each other? I mean, I get why Athena hates Sinner, he was mean. Within their first interaction, he literally lectured her and told her to never speak to him, or anyone else. Pardon? Go back to bed, we’re not doing this today. Athena is truly better than me because I would have spit in that mans food. I suppose the best explanation is that Sinner hates EVERYONE, he just has a bad attitude. But when Mr. Bad Attitude meets Ms. I Hate Bad Attitudes (And Also Have One!), nothing good can arise. Or so you think, because they did in fact.. I think.. fall in love? The love story fell kind of short for me, because a lot of it really was lust. The moments that could have developed the romance into a love story were there, but the characters thoughts never pushed that agenda. It felt very lustful for a while, and eventually genuine care was definitely shown but it was pretty late in the book. I think that there’s definitely a chance for this romance to be redeemed in the second book, because I quite honestly did enjoy it. They were cute, I liked them, but I didn’t love them unfortunately!

⊹ ࣪ ˖ “Here. I saved this for you.” She slid a plate of food to me. “I had to hide it from the others. They’re not very good at sharing.”

⋮ ⌗ ┆Mags ⋆˚꩜。
╰ Mags is Athena’s only friend, and Sinners little sister! She’s so precious, saving food for Athena and watching after her when she was sleeping. She would even stand outside the shower to make sure nobody would go in while Athena was bathing, this girl was adorable and I loved her. She’s sweet, she’s kind, and I will accept absolutely zero harm done to her character. So author, mark my words, if you do anything to Mags then I will die, I’m not exaggerating. She deserves only the best things.

In conclusion
This was not a bad book! It definitely felt a bit unserious and the author definitely had an idea in her head that consisted mostly of Sinner and Athena and honestly, I get it. She’s so real for that. It feels like those imaginary scenarios that you think of before bed, but written and published. This can be a bad or good thing depending on the person, but I enjoyed it!

⋮ ⌗ ┆pre-review⋆˚꩜。
╰ i actually wasn’t expecting this to be.. good?!? and the ending?! I’m seething

At this point, I will devour anything Emily Blackwood writes!! She is one of my favorite Romantasy authors!

The magic system and plot in this? AMAZING. I absolutely loved this and was hooked immediately. I could envision the entire world perfectly. Sinner is the most perfect possessive MMC!!

I thought this story was super unique. The captive romance + enemies to lovers + forced mates combo gave me slight Manacled vibes - not going to lie! I cannot wait for book 2! Emily Blackwood really knows how to send us off with a banging cliffhanger 😅

4.5⭐

what if I told you I read this book in 2 sittings

what is going on in this world? idk but I gotta find out!! will be adding book 2 to my list of “impatiently waiting for” books

starts with the FMC burying her family & then immediately getting kidnapped?! placed in an underground cell with 30 dudes?! (my nightmare) BUT the scariest guy in there is like super hot & tells everyone not to touch her

dreamy in a we’re-all-trapped-in-an-underground-dungeon sort of way

Emily’s writing always sucks me in & before I know it I’ve read the entire book

I’d say this one isn’t totally a dark romance but maybe a light grey? a Heather gray maybe??

Tropes:
captives
he’s the scariest & biggest guy in there
he wields shadows
she befriends his sister
forced proximity
he’s bossy (I’m into it)

This one... wasn't for me and that's okay!!

THIS IS A READER SPACE, NOT AN AUTHOR SPACE!!!

... everything felt very surface level and not very fleshed out. I try to give grace where it's due because it is the first book in the series, but I felt like I didn't even have enough information to care.

Also, you don't need to describe the same character repeatedly the same way. I got it the first, second, and third time that the MMC was massive/large/ginormous/etc. I did not need to be told 6363829273 other times. How about something about his personality? Or literally anything else?

I don't really understand the big deal about our FMCs powers? We've seen this before and it's literally not the ~worst~ thing ever.

The most entertaining part to me was the twist at the ending. I assumed there would be a betrayal but I wasn't sure how or what.

I'm not going to go around recommending this one, but I won't tell you not to read it, I guess...

if you loved the vibes of the bonds that tie series by j bree and have been looking for something to scratch that itch, PLEASE pick this up! the manacled elements come into play with how Athena is imprisoned for her believed powers & the attempted forced bonding to heighten said powers. chefs kiss.

some highlights for me were:
forced proximity / forced bonding
tiered magic system
"touch her you die" mmc shadow wielder
sassy fmc
dark fantasy / pnr
fast paced & addicting

Beg the Night — beg it for what, exactly? Answers? Engagement? A plot that moves before the 95% mark?

I struggled with this one. I got to about 45% and had to take a break because... nothing was happening.. and this is the part of the book where it should be getting really juicy! People calling this 'action packed' must’ve read a different book, because there’s no real action until the very end. Barely.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when characters “hate” each other from the get go just because the trope says so. They didn’t even know each other, and they were forced in the exact same situation but "oh he/she exists, I must rage."

The pacing of the chapters dragged and the flow was rough—it desperately needed better structure. Chapters had natural end points but just kept going. Such long chapters for such a short book.

I had so many questions by the end, but since I doubt I’ll read the second book, I guess I’ll never get the answers.

4.25 WOWWW i actually loved this & especially the second half…. So good!!! The only reason it’s docked a little bit is because the beginning felt pretty rushed to me & I wanted MOREEE like I needed more detail and world building. But OTHERWISE literally 10/10 this was SO unique, interesting & I truly loved it. Such a quick read & I cannot recommend it enough!!!

Thank you so much to Emily Blackwood for the early copy 🖤

This book wasn’t quite what I expected, but I really enjoyed it.
The story kicks off with Athena, who, after burying her sister, is kidnapped and thrown into a dungeon filled with men. They’re all captives of an organization called the Ministry, a ruthless force waging war across the land—a war fueled by mystics (people with powers). The Ministry believes Athena is one of them, and the only way to unlock her power? A willing mating bond. (With one of the men in the dungeon, obviously.)

I thought the premise was fascinating, and while we only got a glimpse of the worldbuilding, magic system, and political intrigue, what was there had me hooked. Athena herself was a compelling character, and what I loved most was how unreliable she turned out to be as a narrator. The deeper we got into her POV, the more questions arose, adding layers of mystery. (And I live for unanswered questions.)

Now, let’s talk about Sinner—the grumpy, broody, possessive MMC. He was the perfect asshole with a heart of gold, and ugh, his protective streak? Chef’s kiss.

While I really liked the setup, I did feel like the book was more about laying the groundwork than fully diving into the story. The stakes—war, torture, death—were high from the start, but because the book was relatively short, I didn’t feel the urgency as much as I wanted to. I craved more intensity, more pressure.

That being said, if you’re looking for a fast-paced, slightly spicy romantasy with lots of sexual tension and an intriguing setup, this is for you.
🤍🖤 Forced Proximity (they’re held captive together and forced to mate)
🤍🖤 Hate to Love
🤍🖤 Political Intrigue
🤍🖤 First Book in a Series
🤍🖤 Dual POV

Okay, can I say something? I loved this book. I wasn’t expecting much, but OMG, this book is amazing. It puts you on edge and you can't let go until you finish the book. Here we have the story of Athena, a girl who suffered a lot and saw all her family die. To make the matter worse, she was captured and sent to a dungeon until the Ministry discovered what her power is and how they can use it for its favour. With angst, plots and a good background, this book it’s an excellent start to this series.

What if I told you I read this book in one day....

If you look up the definition of "unputdownable" in the dictionary, Beg the Night by Emily Blackwood would be underneath it.

The book kicks off with our FMC, Athena, being captured and placed in a dungeon with like 30 plus magic wielding dudes. And the scariest one of all? Just so happens to be the one who agrees to mate with her for a blood moon ritual where their powers can be truly unleashed. Cue the tension, angst and possesiveness!!! And a few of my favorite dark romantasy scenes of all time.

"'𝑺𝒉𝒆'𝒔 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒘, 𝒃𝒐𝒚𝒔,' 𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱. '𝑵𝒐𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚 𝒆𝒍𝒔𝒆 𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒉𝒆𝒓.'"

If you're craving a fast-paced, dark romantasy with tension, a smoldering romance, unique world-building and magic, and a new morally grey, possessive, shadow daddy to obsess over. This is your book!!

That was my first ever Emily Blackwood book but it certainly won’t be the last hehehe 🤭

I was hooked literally from the moment I started it!

I loved the writing
I loved the characters ❤️
Athena is such a badass and I loved how strong minded she was !!
I loved the world building! I thought it was super easy to understand the world & its magic as someone who struggle with books where the world building is super heavy.

I had a big hunch that it would end on a cliffhanger & it did. But honestly, it only made me more excited for the next book In the series !! I can’t wait to see where the story will go & I can’t wait know more about these characters & their powers 👀

Omg! This book was everything! 🔥🥵🤯 Prepare to be Consumed! 🔥🖤

Hold onto your hearts, fantasy lovers, because "Beg the Night" by Emily Blackwood is an absolute MASTERPIECE of dark and twisted romantasy! From the moment I cracked open the cover, I was utterly and completely devoured by this book, and honestly, I'm still reeling!

Let's talk about the heart of this story: Athena and Sinner. Their chemistry is not just palpable; it's an inferno! The animosity and reluctant pull between these two powerful individuals had me absolutely reeling. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife, and every interaction was a delicious dance of defiance and undeniable attraction. Their push and pull, their struggle for dominance, was utterly addictive. Seriously, the sparks flying off these two could ignite the entire world! 🔥

And the twists and turns?! Just when I thought I had a handle on things, Blackwood yanked the rug out from under me! The secrets, the betrayals, the unexpected revelations – they kept me glued to the pages, my heart pounding in anticipation. Athena is a compelling protagonist, strong and fiercely independent despite her initial lack of magic, and Sinner... oh, Sinner. He's the kind of brooding, dangerous anti-hero you can't help but be drawn to, even as you question his every motive.

"Beg the Night" isn't just a good book; it's an experience. It's a thrilling, sensual, and utterly captivating journey into a world where power and desire collide. I finished this book and immediately felt a gaping hole in my reading life. I NEED the next book in the "Mystics of Ashora" series like I need air!

If you crave a dark romantasy with insane chemistry, intricate world-building, a compelling magic system, and twists that will leave you gasping, then "Beg the Night" is an absolute MUST-READ! Consider yourself warned: you will be obsessed! 🖤🌙

Two people… are locked up in a… prison… of sorts… and… all they need to do to survive… is… take part in a mating ritual… under the blood moon…

I got you hooked didn’t I?

Picture X-Men… The Last Stand… my favorite movie in the franchise… and you’ve got… a spicier version… with Beg The Night.

There’s Earthlies… regular humans… and then there’s Mystics… people with magical abilities, and they also come in tiers. So there’s tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3 is the most powerful…

Athena… has been dragged to this prison… but she’s screaming the whole time… that she is an Earthly and has been taken by mistake. The people holding these Mystics captive are doing so, so they can wield their power and win the war raging on.

The head of this prison believes Athena is hiding her power… and needs her to complete the claiming… so she can figure out what it is…

And who steps up for the claiming… even though… he can’t stand to look at her… That would be Sinner. Our tall and deliciously dangerous shadow daddy… yes you heard me… shadow daddy…

“My power was rattling the bars of its cage, desperate to escape me and protect her.”

There’s a part where he’s mad at her and he tosses her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes… 10/10. No notes.

This book is so fun! Its fast paced, you can finish it in a day.

However... my apologies for that cliffhanger…. Sorry...

“I didn’t think I had a heart, but I felt it breaking in that moment. Shattering. Icing over.”

If you want enemies to lovers, he hates her but he’s obsessed with her, held captive, dual POV…. You know what to do.

What. The. Hades. Did. I. Read?

I kept waiting for this to make some kind of sense. For the pieces to come together so I could be like, ah! That's why this is happening. That's why they hate each other. That's why they formed a bond. That's why that bitch is evil.
It didn't happen.
80% in, and we've changed direction for what this is supposed to be. Now, suddenly, we're rebels without a plan. And I'm not at all interested in where any of this is going. But then we just circle right back to the beginning.

I like the idea that the main characters have a rough as hell background, but it meant nothing. Their character development was weak. The storyline was disjointed and didn't bother connecting the dots. The plot had no direction.
There was no purpose.

Once we start getting out, the juvenile feeling to this book grew. There were several opportunities to kill the director, but they just didn't. There's not even a purpose for that character. She just has people stabbed in the thigh repeatedly for some reason.

I don't know why a ball was needed in this book? What part of torture chamber underground where people are forced to sleep with each other screams there needs to be a formal party?

Yeah, this was a mess.

Emily Blackwood is at it again with another incredible dive into a wicked dystopian world in Beg the Night.

With incredible magic, an interesting plot, and even more alluring mc’s, this one will not disappoint! Sinner is so fascinating, given his dark past and his developing fascination with Athena.

Athena is so interesting, I don’t want to spoil, but her secrets are jaw dropping and you’re left constantly questioning who and what she really is.

The cliffhanger was incredible and I will be sat for the next book. I *need* to find out what happens.

This was a great start to the series.
I loved how fast paced this was. From the first chapter the action starts and really doesn't let up. Sinner and Athena are great characters. I don't know how I feel about the romance though. I honestly think this book would have been better if romance was not the focus. I am looking forward to seeing where the next book goes.

I don't think I have very much to say to be honest. I liked the premise of it on Tik Tok, but the execution felt flat to me. The writing is okay, but the pace and the world building were very disorganised to me. It felt like there were so many plot holes that I didn't even understand exactly what they were fighting for. Every big event was brushed off without expanding much on it and so a lot of the intentions were lost to me. The most interesting parts were also a little bit rushed. We obviously understand that a lot of their anger comes from injustice, but that's all inferred as we aren't really shown what happened to the main characters. Their interactions weren't my favorites either. I don't think I'm curious enough to read the following books, but I did manage to finish it and found it okay.

Now I LOVED the premise of this book and the world it was set in. It was the perfect blend of fantasy and dystopian and started off so strong with all of the forced proximity. I just wished that the book had gone deeper into everything!! The world-building, characters and plot were all great, just kinda surface level. Maybe this is because it’s just the start of the series, and a fairly short book in general, but I just wanted more from everything, because at the beginning I was hooked! Overall this was still a fun fantasy read and while this was my first Emily Blackwood book, I can see why she’s a beloved author!

I finished this book a few days ago and I’m still thinking about it. Post dystopian worlds have always held a certain space in my heart ever since reading Divergent and the Hunger Games as a teen so it’s no surprise that I ate up this post dystopian book. The magic system was very unique which is always refreshing! This book was fairly short for its genre but every page counted.

I really liked the FMC and her character growth in this book. Just when I found myself wondering when we would get backstory to our MMC, we gained valuable insight. For a book that only took place in a few settings I never felt bored and I loved the dialogue. Emily Blackwood had been on my TBR for a while and I’m SO glad I signed up for this ARC.

Also, please tel me which Emily Blackwood book I should read next cuz I’m OBSESSED!

I loved this book! I thought it was so cool and unique. I really enjoyed all the characters especially our MMC whose name is Sinner. The FMC Athena was a bad ass in her own way. The plot twist had me absolutely gobsmacked and I am so excited to eead book 2.

It's always exciting when an author you love starts an entirely new series, as was the case with Emily Blackwood's Beg The Night, Book 1 of her Mystics of Ashora series. This new series is dark, with dystopian-esque vibes, set in a grim world ravaged by wars and conflicts between earthlies, those with no magical powers, and mystics.

The true origin of the conflict and the role of the Ministry that seems to be running all the operations are still unclear, and I am guessing we will learn more of the true history in the sequel. For now, we have bits and pieces of information that may or may not turn out to be confirmed later on. I am excited to uncover the secrets and solve the mysteries.

What I found really intriguing and mesmerizing was that the setting for most of the book was an underground prison. Still, even with the unchanged setting, Emily managed to weave a story rich in plot and characters. So much is going on in the prison cells and the chambers above.

Just stop for a second and imagine being a woman sent to a prison overpopulated by men. A prison where you are all sent to mate and provide magical power for the Ministry, a seemingly villainous organization with a thirst for power. How would you feel? Then, you are chosen to mate with the most powerful mystic down there, a broody, dark male with an almost bullying streak. Still, there is more to him than meets the eye: a tortured soul and a horrible past. And it is precisely those difficult circumstances that connect our MCs. They are both haunted by their past. And I feel like once they truly become one, they will learn to heal and find a path forward together.

Beg The Night is a thrilling introduction to a new world, and I can't wait to see where Emily will take us next. I love being on her team and having the privilege of following her author's path.

mating bonds x enemies to lovers x “you’re mine”

This book was SO easy to read. I couldn’t put it down and had me staying up so late so I couldn’t keep reading. It’s fast paced with great characters and dual pov which gives you insight into how much they loath each other…or is it loath how much they want each other? Either way I’m obsessed. There’s a cliffhanger that makes you want more (second book comes out Dec 27!)

Read this if you’re in the mood for…
- mating bonds
- enemies to lovers
- forced proximity
- hidden magic
- found family
- “she’s mine”
- betrayal
- slow burn

I loved this! The slow burn was painful in the best way possible but felt like the right growth for Sinner and Athena. I am DESPERATE for more of them. It’s a great romantasy book for if you’ve read a lot of them or if you’re new. My one tiny issue was that the ending felt rushed/abrupt. I’m looking forward to the next one though!

Here are a few of my favorite things…
- when he asks her to read for him. Come on.
- his white knuckles grip on the bars lol
- the concept of seeing past each other’s masks which they both need in a relationship
- the betrayal at the end got me lol didn’t see that coming

I will be recommending!

Great storyline and how fast/slow paced the plot was. You learn about the characters background through the multiple point of views and there is also amazing chemistry even though it takes place in a dystopian setting. Exited for book two in december!!
