About the author

P. A. Krishnan is an Indian writer who writes in both Tamil and English. He began his career as a teacher of physics and went on to serve many years as an bureaucrat in the Government of India. After a long stint of 30 years, he joined a research organization as the CEO. He later became a Senior Director with a multinational firm.

His most famous novels include The Tiger Claw Tree and The Muddy River which were also re-created by him in Tamil as புலிநகக் கொன்றை and கலங்கிய நதி. He has also written an introduction to Western Painting the first volume of which was published by Kalachuvadu under the title மேற்கத்திய ஓவியங்கள். A contributor to several Indian newspapers and literary magazines, several volumes of his essays have also been collated and published, the most notable ones being Agrahaarathil Periyar (அக்கிரகாரத்தில் பெரியார்) and Thirumbichendra Tharunam (திரும்பிச் சென்ற தருணம்).He is one of the Advisories in awards panel of Tamil literary garden organization.

ஒரு குடும்பத்தின் நான்கு தலைமுறை மக்களைப் பற்றிச் சொல்லும் கதை. வித்தியாசமான பாத்திரங்களுடன் கம்யூனிசம், ஆண்மிகம், மதம், சாதி மற்றும் சுதந்திரப் போராட்டம் என கலந்துக் கட்டி செல்லும் கதை. பல பாத்திரங்கள் புத்தகப் பிரியர்களாக இருப்பதால், பத்துப் பக்கத்து ஒருமுறை ஏதாவது புத்தகத்தைப் பற்றியோ அல்லது புத்தகத்திலிருந்து மேற்கோளோ வருகிறது. கதையில் காந்தி, வ.உ.சி, வாஞ்சிநாதன், பாரதி, சுப்ரமணிய சிவா மற்றும் வ.வே.சு. ஐயர் பாத்திரங்களாக வருகின்றனர்.

மனிதன் தான் தோன்றிய காலம் முதல் இன்றுவரை இன்னொரு மனிதன் இருக்கிறான் என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் தான் இந்த வாழ்க்கையை கடந்து வருகிறான். இதனால்தான் ஆரம்பம் முதல் அவன் சிறு சிறு குழுக்கலாக வாழ தொடங்கி குடும்பம் என்ற ஒரு சமூக கூட்டமைப்பை உருவாக்கி அதனுள் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் ஒரு உறவு வைத்து அதற்கு ஒரு பெயர் சூட்டி உறவுகளை விரிவு படுத்தினான். இவ்வுலகில் யார் கை விட்டாலும் தன் குடும்பம் தனக்காக நிற்கும் என்ற பெரும் உந்துதலாலே அவன் தன் வாழ்வை எதிர்நோக்கி வாழ பழகினான். இன்று நவீன உலகில் கட்டமைப்பின் அஸ்திவாரம் மெல்ல மெல்ல பலவீனமாக தொடங்கியுள்ளது. குடும்பங்கள் சுருங்க தொடங்கிவிட்டன, மனிதன் தனிமையை நோக்கி தன்னை செலுத்த முற்படுகிறான், தனிமையின் வலியை விரும்பி ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் ஒரு சமூகம் மெல்ல மேலோங்கி வருகிறது. நம் சமகால இளைய சமூகம் கண்டும் கேட்டிராத ஒரு பெரும் குடும்பத்தின் நான்கு தலைமுறை கதை தான் இந்த நாவல்.

திருநெல்வேலி ஜில்லாவில் நாங்குநேரி ஊரில் வசிக்கும் ஒரு தென்கலை ஐயங்கார் குடும்பத்தின் நான்கு தலைமுறைகளின் கதை என்று மூன்று வரிகளில் கடந்து விட முடியாத ஒரு கதை. ஏனெனில், இந்த கதைக்குள் ஒரு உலகம் இயங்குகிறது, அதனுடன் இந்த உலகமே இந்த கதைக்குள் இயங்கியுள்ளது. ஐயங்கார்களின் வாழ்க்கை முறையை அவர்களுள் ஒருவராக இருந்து பார்க்கும் ஒரு பார்வையை இந்த கதை நமக்கு கொடுக்கும். மேலும் அந்த முறை ஒரு 60 ஆண்டு கால பரிணாம மாற்றங்களையும் நம்மால் காண முடியும். 10 வயதில் தன் கணவனை இழந்து கைம்பெண்ணாகவே வாழ்ந்து மடிந்த ஆண்டாள் இருந்த அதே குடும்பத்தில் இரண்டு தலைமுறை கடந்து வந்து பார்த்தால் ஒரு கலப்பு திருமணம் நம்பி - ரோசா வடிவில். பெண்கள் பல வழிகளில் அடிமை படுத்த பட்ட கால கட்டத்தில் இந்த உண்டியல் குடும்பத்தை தாங்கி சென்று கரை சேர்த்திய பெருமை அக்குடும்பத்தின் பெண்களுக்கே சேரும், குறிப்பாக ஒரு விருட்சமாக நின்ற பொன்னா வையே சேரும். இந்த கதையின் மற்றுமொரு பலம் இந்த கதையுடன் சேர்ந்து இந்த களமும் ( திருநெல்வேலி ஜில்லா ) அடைந்த மாறுதல்களை கதையின் போக்கிலே வாசகனுக்கு உணர்த்தி விடுகிறார்.

உண்டியல் குடும்பம் என்ற பெரும் செல்வந்த வணிக குடும்பம் மீது அவர்களுக்கே தெரியமல் ஒரு பெரும் சாபம் தொற்றிக்கொள்கிறது. குடும்பத்தின் ஆண்கள் அந்த குடும்பத்தில் தங்குவது கடினம், ஒன்று மரணம் அல்லது தேடல் தரும் பயணம். இந்த குடும்பத்தின் கடைசி வாரிசுகளான நம்பி, கண்ணன் இருவர் பார்வையில் இந்த கதை தொடங்கி, அவர்களின் பெரிய பாட்டி பொன்னாவின் நினைவுகளுக்குள் சென்று நான்கு தலைமுறைகள் பயணித்து மீண்டும் நம்பி கண்ணன் காலத்தில் வந்து சேர்ந்து,இறுதியில் மரணமும், பயணமும் ஒரு சேர ஒரே தலைமுறையில் நிகழ்வதுடன் கதை பக்கங்களில் முடிந்தாலும் அந்த குடும்பத்தில் கதை தொடர்ந்து கொண்டே தான் இருக்கும்.

இந்த கதையில் 1920 தொடங்கி 1980 வரை தமிழகம் மற்றும் இந்தியா வின் அரசியல் நிலைப்பாடு வெகுவாக அலசி ஆராய்ந்து விரிவாக விவாதிக்க பட்டுள்ளது. அதிலும் இந்திய அரசியலுக்கும் தென் தமிழகத்துக்கும் உள்ள தொடர்புகள், அவர்களுக்கு இருந்த சுதந்திர வேட்கை, உலகலாவிய அரசியல் விழிப்புணர்வு, இளைஞர்கள் மத்தியில் கம்யூனிஸ கோட்பாடுகள் உருவாக்கிய புரட்சி தீ, அதற்காக பலியான அப்பாவி மாணவர்கள் என்று கதை வெவ்வேறு துறைகளுக்குள் ஊடுருவுகிறது.

இந்த புத்தகம் தொடங்கும் பொழுது மிக கடினமான ஒன்றாக தெரிந்தது, மேலும் தவறான ஒன்றை கையில் எடுத்துவிட்டோமா என்ற அச்சம்,ஆனால் ஒரு காரணம் இதனை தொடர்ந்து வாசிக்க. இந்த புத்தகத்தை எனக்கு பரிந்துரை செய்தவர் எழுத்தாளர் செந்தில் ஜெகன்னாதன் அவர்கள் இந்த ஒரு காரணத்தினால் நான் தொடர்ந்து வாசித்தேன்.. இல்லையேல் இந்த புத்தகத்தை நான் தவிர விட்டிருப்பேன். இவ்வுலகில் உள்ள அனைத்து புத்தகங்களும் என்றாவது ஒரு நாள் ஒரு வாசகனால் திறக்கப்படும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் தான் உறங்கிகொண்டிருக்கின்றன. நம்மால் முடிந்த வரை புத்தகங்களுக்கு உயிர் கொடுப்போம், உயிரினும் மேலான நம் குடும்பத்திற்கு, சக மனிதனுக்கும் அந்த அனுபவத்தை பகிர்ந்து கொடுப்போம்.

The Indian English fiction as a literary phenomena bloomed a little more than a century ago. the creative or aesthetic Indian English fiction after 1980 brought a tremendous change in themes and techniques, in feels and forms. one such author who brought the tremendous change in literature is P.A.Krishnan.
Pakshirajan Ananthakrishnan who is popularly known as P.A. Krishnan started his career as a teacher, became a bureaucrat in the Government of India and shed that mantle to become the CEO of a research foundation. He is presently a Senior Director of a multinational company. An accomplished writer, both in English and Tamil, he lives in Delhi with his wife, Revathi, who is a teacher.
P.A.Krishnan is one among those who wear proudly tradition upon sleeve has written his first novel in English, The Tiger Claw Tree as a humble tribute to his tradition. He has translated his text into Tamil Pulinagakontrai.
P A Krishnan's first novel 'The Tigerclaw Tree', which became a cult classic when it came out in 1998, chronicles the trials and tribulations of four generations of a Tenkalai Iyengar family from the southernmost part of British India to post-Independence era. His latest, 'The Muddy River', is a story of a bureaucrat caught in the machinations of Assamese politics and public sector corruption in the last quarter of the 20th century. The characters in the first are all blue-blooded Tamils, while the second has a wider array - Bengali, Assamese and Marwari.
The novel Tiger Claw Tree sings the glory of unsung heroes of Indian independence; it broadcasts the Indian the Indian history, culture, Indian values and its society with its beauty and ugliness. The novel is laced with the historical facts. With his historical imagination he takes us into dull facts and calls our ancestors, Bharathi,V.V.S.Iyer, V.O.Chidambaram ,Veera Pandiyan Kattabomman, Oomaidurai before us with all their peculiarities of language and manners.

I read the tamil version of it three year back when I was in college. It changed the way I approach everything in life. Today after completing it in English, many things that did not make sense then, is absolutely clear today. For starters who are eager to know the political history of Tamil Nadu should definitely read this book. It talks about the pre-Gandhi era of Swadeshi movement, the obvious quit India movement and the rise of DMK and Communism in TN in the 60s and 40s respectively. I was asked to read this book by my uncle after coming home from a anti-BT Brinjal awareness program/protest. The story is about a thenkalai Iyengar family in Nanguneri, whose flirtations with death is a frequent one as they lose their family members to death one by one in every generation. Its as if a curse was bestowed on the family. The characters live long even after completing the book. Without revealing more, one of the best books I have ever read, please read it.

பல வருடங்களாக படிக்க வேண்டும் என்று வைத்திருந்த மற்றுமொரு புத்தகம். படித்தாயிற்று. பெருமூச்சு வாங்கி கொள்கிறேன். நான்குனேரியை சேர்ந்த ஒரு தென்கலை ஐயங்கார் குடும்பத்தின் 100 வருட புனைவு வரலாற்றின் ஊடே நம் நாட்டின் முக்கிய சம்பவங்கள் நாவல் நெடுகிலும் உள்ளது. கட்டபொம்மன் தூக்கிலடப்படுவது, ஆங்கிலேயரின் மேலாண்மையில் அன்றாட மக்களின் பங்களிப்பு எவ்வாறு இருந்தது, என்ன எதிர்வினைகள் ஆற்றப்பட்டன. அதிலும் சிலர் எப்படி ஆங்கிலேயரோடும் ஒத்திசைவாக இருந்தார்கள். கலெக்டர் Ashe கொலையுண்டது, அண்ணல் காந்தியடிகளின் உப்பு சத்யாகிரகம், அண்ணி பெசன்ட், ராஜாஜி, இன்னும் பல்வேறு தலைவர்களின் கோட்பாடு, அவர்களின் இயக்கத்திலோ சிந்தனையிலோ அன்றாட மக்களின் எதிர்வினை எப்படி இருந்தது போன்ற விவரங்கள் கொட்டி கிடக்கின்ற ஒரு நாவல். கம்யூனிசம் , மார்க்சியம், காந்தியியம் என பல்வேறு கொள்கையின் கூறுகள் அதை பின்பற்றும் கதை மாந்தர்களின் ஊடே நடக்கும் கருத்து விவாதங்கள். மேலும் அக்கருத்துகளினால் அவர்கள் ஆற்றும் வினைகள், அவற்றின் எதிர் வினைகள் என மிகவும் சுவாரஸ்யமான கதை ஓட்டம்.

முக்கியமாக என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்தது நாவலின் நேரியலற்ற (Non-linear) கதை சொல்லும் முறை. வெறுமனே ஒரு கதை காலத்திலிருந்து மற்றொண்டிற்கு சீராக போகாமல், முன்னும் பின்னும் போகும் போக்கினால் வாசகர் எப்பொழுதும் ஒரு கவனத்தோடு படிக்க வேண்டியதிருக்கும். இதை நான் வெகுவாக ரசித்தேன். பல வேளைகளில் நாவலின் ஆரம்பித்தில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ள ஐயங்கார் குடும்பத்தின் வம்சாவழி (Family Tree ) படத்தை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் சரி பார்க்க வேண்டிய சூழல் வரும். இதுவும் எனக்கு மிகவும் ரசிக்கும்படி இருந்தது.

மொத்தத்தில் பல வருஷமாக படிக்க நினைத்த புத்தகத்தை படிப்போம் என்று அசட்டையாக ஆரம்பித்தேன். அனால் படிக்க படிக்க என்னை உள்ளே இழுத்துக்கொண்டது இந்த நாவல். சில கதை மாந்தர்களின் முடிவு கூட பாதித்தது முக்கியமாக நம்பி. அது போக நாவல் நெடுகிலும் பல்வேறு மேற்கோள்கள். சிறிய செய்யுள்கள் உள்ளன. அனைத்தையும் notes எடுத்து வைத்துள்ளேன். அந்த புத்தகங்களையும் ஆராய வேண்டும்.

நாவலில் குறை என்று சொல்ல எனக்கு ஒன்றும் தோன்றவில்லை !

This is a classic in every sense of the term. I am yet to read a political novel of this breadth and depth. Andal and Nambi are great characters and will be spoken about long after our departure from this world.

its been a week since I finished and some parts of the book continue to mesmerize me with their imagery. the characters are very well done and stay wonderfully true to themselves and their times. the author has got the period and setting down to t. all in all, a simply superb read.
