This is the story of a young man - a violin prodigy - who, because of a thoughtless choice, almost loses his dream to play. It's a great book for me because it starts out in northeast Portland, OR, the area I grew up in, so I know many of the locales and even some of the people.

If you are a musician, this is an inspiring read. If you would just like to spend a few hours with a short book that reaffirms that our choices DO have consequences, and that our fears CAN be overcome, this is also worth a look. It's a sincere, heartfelt autobiography, and the author takes you with him from the highest highs to the lowest lows, and the journey that follows.

I'd give this 3 1/2 stars. While it's not "great literature", it broke my heart and made me think. So many of us, when we are young, think that we are immune from the consequences of our actions. Unfortunately, some of our choices can't be shrugged off and have life-long repercussions. Another message here is that there is always hope.

This book is currently only available from the author/publisher, and can be obtained at violindown.com. It is also available through the Seattle Public Library system.
(Also check Amazon - they are currently out of stock, but apparently will be carrying it.)
