I have been reading through this book as part of our morning time with the kids this school year. I appreciated how the author devoted a chapter to each piece of the armor of God and have illustrations and examples to help the kids (and me) understand each piece and how prayer works.

If you want simplicity, read a children’s book and if you want simplicity in the Gospel, the high energy of Tony Evans will be the bridge of communication between your child and yourself. You only need to read a few pages and the blessings of God flow.

You and your child will be engaged as you do this study together. It is that good. It of course is geared to the life of a child older than 9 with references to sports, school and friends. It teaches on standing in the full armor of God and what that looks like. With a clear definition of spiritual warfare and how Satan tries to defeat all Christians, we are equipped with the Word of God.

Starting with the belt of truth, we cannot use the rest of the armor without truth. The three things emphasized are God’s truth shows the good purpose of God’s design. Truth includes more than the facts but the goal behind the fact. Truth is predetermined by God. Its source is from God. What is true inside you must be true outside you. You are living what you believe. The difference between our feelings and truth is discussed as well. The damage our feelings can do when we are controlled by our emotions instead of the reality of God.

After the belt of truth, we are now ready for the plate of righteousness. Knowing the difference between the being and doing. How our motivations reveal our heart and how to examine those motivations. The main purpose of the breastplate of righteousness is that it protects the heart. It gives new meaning in living in righteousness.

After putting on the breastplate of righteousness is now time to put on the shoes of peace. What does the peace of God look like? By putting on the correct shoes of peace, we can make good choices. Making good choices is knowing the gospel and applying it to all areas of our day.

After the shoes of peace, we are now ready to put on the shield of faith. Tony Evans makes a great statement here, the truth, righteousness, and the peace we have but the next three items we have to pick up when we are in need of them. The shield of faith is our response to truth. Faith when accessed is doing the work that God has already done.

After the shield of faith, we are now ready to pick up the helmet of salvation. The helmet protects what goes into our mind. What do you watch on TV? What do you read? How do you protect your emotions? Evans discusses all three areas of salvation, past, present and future, justification, sanctification and glorification. To have your child understand these concepts is so vital in the Christian walk.

After the helmet of salvation, we are now ready for the last piece of armor. The sword. It is the only offence where the others are defensive. This is discussed seriously and with great intention.

Great truths to experience with your children and to put on the full armor of God together. I highly recommend!

Tony Evans is one of my favourite authors. He is incredibly prolific writer and seems to have the ability to engage different audiences from young to old, new in the faith and those who have mature faith. Spiritual warfare is one of his key themes and writes very accessibly. In fact, he makes the different elements of the armour real and practical and - most importantly - indispensible. Loved it.

Perfect. This was actually written for kids but I was easily able to adapt it for my adult class. There were several things that Evans brings out that I have never considered before. This may be a book written for children, but it is worth your time as an adult to check it out.

This book is set up much like an adult Bible Study. Tony Evans uses stories from the Bible & real life to help kids understand how to follow Holy Spirit and wear the Armor of God. The book has thought provoking questions for kids.

Explaining the concept and reality of spiritual warfare to kids can be a daunting task. In his book A Kid’s Guide to The Armor of God, Tony Evans does a remarkable job of unpacking the meaning of each piece of Armor and it’s implications for the believer. He does this by letting scripture explain scripture, through word studies(e.g. Word can be used as Graphe, Logos, and Rhema), story telling, and well placed humor. More than just a book for children, parents can learn a lot from this book.

I mention spiritual warfare and have ask for God’s protection over our children during devotions and family prayer time but I wanted more. Tony’s book is well suited for a homeschool classroom. With our children being 9 years old and 6 years old, the book was a little too deep for them at this time. I found this out when I attempted to read through an entire lesson in one sitting. By the third page I had lost our little one and by the last page our 4th grader’s eyes had glazed over. When I divided the second lesson into two parts it was better received, but at this point I believe the maturity of our children has to be taken into consideration. Upon completing the book myself, I believe that it is well-organized, well thought out, biblical, and boasts real life application for tweens and teens. At times it can be a little heavy handed in theology, but that’s the part I loved – a self-proclaimed bible nerd. With that being said I would also like to share my gratitude to Tony Evans for defining a number of words that get tossed around in church circles to include: righteousness, sanctified, covert sins, justification, salvation, glorification, and many others. This is truly a book we will revisit in the future.

This an excellent resource for tweens and teens. It gives kids a different perspective: that there is a spiritual battle going on around us but that God gives us an armor to fight. There is a chapter about each piece of God’s armor and a chapter at the end about undergirding everything with prayer. I thought this book was so well-done! There are Bible verses throughout so that the explanations are Biblically-based. The analogies and examples that the author uses really help explain the concepts. There are questions throughout each chapter to engage the reader and questions at the end of chapters for review and application. I think this book could be used as a Bible study resource in addition to just being a great book for older elementary and middle school-aged children to read. I have heard many sermons about the armor of God but the author lays out excellent explanations that I have never even heard before so this would be great for adults to read as well! Highly recommended!

This book was written in such a way that kids will clearly be able to understand its message. I think it would make a superb resource for families and do much to encourage healthy conversations.
