Inio Asano (浅野いにお, Asano Inio) is a Japanese cartoonist. He is known for his character-driven stories and his detailed art-style, making him one of the most influential manga author of his generation. Asano was born in 1980 and produced his first amateur comics as a teenager. His professional debut happened in 2000 in the pages of the magazine Big Comic Spirits. Since then, he has collaborated with most of the major Japanese magazines of seinen manga (comics for a mature audience). Among Asano's internationally acclaimed works are: the psychological horror Nijigahara Holograph (2003-2005); the drama Solanin (2005-2006); the existentialistic slice-of-life Goodnight Punpun (2007-2013); the erotic A Girl on the Shore (2009-2013); the sci-fi Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction (2014-2022).
The excessive violence and sexual content continues. Especially the sex feels overdone for shock. I almost considered dropping the series after this volume, but the plot seems to be going somewhere now, so I continued on the VIZ website and have caught up to the latest chapter. It reminds me of the 90s OVA Kite in some ways, due to the manipulation of the Mujinas for both hits and sex work.

Mujina's exploration of sociopolitical themes feels, at times, self-aggrandizing. It's a tossed salad of gratuitous sex scenes and nihilistic social commentary—to little shock from Asano's veteran readers, but easily off-putting as "rambling edgelord bait" to those unacquainted. It's unequivocally an Inio Asano work, where the author's artistic prowess creates something of a "Stockholm Syndrome" to his narrative obligation to leave you feeling absolutely miserable.
Similarly to how Dead Dead Demon's saw him take the plunge into sci-fi, Mujina: Into the Deep is Asano's foray into action manga. Said action is choreographed stunningly well and married seductively with his sense for the bizarre and off-kilter. The urban sprawl is expansive but suffocating, propelling the violence to impressive heights. These scenes continue to balance well between the realist elements of the story and a penchant for that welcome factor of coolness.
I will reiterate: Inio Asano's artwork and visual storytelling is a large part of his appeal, but it's his prose and dialogue that make it seem like he's huffing his own farts at times. Volume 3 continues that trend, but with a hint—a glimmer even—to something more markedly optimistic? Or at the very least that's my takeaway, and it's about as hopeful as you can expect a story like this to be, where almost every character is flawed, shitty and often insufferable.
In a dystopian near-future where individuals lose their rights and are treated as sub-human, it's certainly a welcome contrast to find the story veer into themes of familial comfort and youthful agency. The cynical talking-piece usually taking the form of befuddled game developer Terumi, himself, seems to be acclimating to his sudden makeshift "found family." We also get more insight into the titular Ubume, both through brief excerpt of her past and inklings of her world view through conversation, which I think was sorely lacking prior to this point.
Averne d Asano riesce i storie come Mujina into the Deep 3.
Things are starting to get serious. Finding out just a tiny bit of Ubume's past is like a kick to the head. It is very similar to things happening today even. The one thing I do like about this series is what it is exploring between rights and non rights and everything else that it entails. Considering that we are slowly moving in that direction with all the technology coming out. It is like a look into what could be a very possible future for us all.
