It’s Christmas time in the forest, but this year there isn’t much reason for the animals to celebrate. It’s been a cold, snowy winter, and the little deer Clara and her mother are worried about finding enough food. Her mother tells Clara to wish on a star, but she doesn’t hold much hope for a happy Christmas. The next day more snow falls, but Clara hears the sound of bells in the distance. As they follow the sound, the two deer join up with squirrels, rabbits and birds along the way. When they stumble onto a stash of nuts and berries, they decide to share with all the other animals, in the spirit of the holiday. It turns into a magical, jolly celebration, and now Clara has reason to know that Christmas wishes can come true. This is a beautiful, heart-warming story about the true meaning of Christmas.
Story itself is not that exciting. Didactic and no magic in the style. I give four stars for the illustrations, though, which I think are absolutely DARLING! Unlike previous reviewer, I loved the little cut-out illustration at the end--it shows the children peering through the trees (cut out) at the animals, and then when you turn the page you see the children behind the trees and the focus is on the animals. However, I do see this could get torn easily.
Pretty,if slightly saccharine tale of the animals sharing Christmas, but why oh why was the cut out page near the end needed? It doesn't enchance the illustrations and it is bound to get torn in pieces with minimal use. Don't any of these book designers deal with actual CHILDREN?
