This volume was a bit better than the previous volume, although the rules for the Battle Frontier constantly annoy me. I also like Emerald a bit better than I did in the last volume, but he's basically Yellow 2.0 (mysterious person sent on a mission by a senior Pokedex Holder whom wants to stop a villain). Crystal made a return in this volume and we get a short cameo from Ruby and Sapphire meaning the next volume is going to be LIT.
Compared to the volume before this, the narrative takes a good leap forward here. More is revealed about Emerald’s challenging of the Frontier Brains and more plot and character development occurs. On reflection, vol. 26’s shorter length in comparison to the other volumes in the series didn’t help matters. I thought there was a noticeable improvement in this volume with Emerald and the other characters becoming more likeable and everything else having more time to progress forward. Thus, I was a lot more engaged in this one by the end. I would definitely recommend you give this a read, whereas vol. 26 not so much, which speaks volumes (no pun intended) for the level of improvement compared to its predecessor. Plus, naturally, with a lot of the introductions undergone in the previous volume, the plot is moving forward more quickly—and easily. And, because of the last few chapters in the volume (which really did help to link a few plot-points together), I am super excited to read vol. 28!
This book is better than all its predecessors I think it’s just the suspense when reading. Every battle you wanna know how is she gonna do it this time, what kind of scheme is gonna win it. And how you don’t know who the villain is, it hints at one person then all of a sudden its a different person.
I think if your the type of person who wants to read and finish a book in 30 minutes this is the perfect book for you. It’s got everything you need in a small package it’s got suspense, mystery, sadness, and just a little bit of romance I think this book is good for everyone.
Containing chapters 309 to 317, this volume of the Pokémon Adventures manga continues Emerald’s story as he changes the Battle Pike, the Battle Pyramid, and the Battle Arena. The true story of the arc also begins to kick into gear with the introduction of the mysterious villain getting his introduction as he seeks a mythical, legendary Pokémon. The volume also sees the reintroduction of a few old faces.
This was a very entertaining volume with some nice action and that does a good job of showing just how skilful and knowledgeable Emerald is. Despite this, I still find Emerald a little annoying, but he does seem to be slowly developing as a character. The Frontier Brains are proving to be interesting characters who have some nice character designs and personalities. The plot itself is still developing nicely and Guile has so far proven to be an interesting reasonable villain.
The artwork for the series remains as good as usual with the fights being quite easy to follow, even when there are a larger number of combatants involved. The little extras that explain how the various Battle Frontier facilities work are quite nice, even if they become a little redundant when the same thing is explained within the story itself.
The Battle Frontier is a no brainer idea for the video games, but narratively how it is presented here in the manga, it continues to be not very interesting. I can't help but think it would all be better if it were a standard shonen tournament arc. Thankfully, Kusaka abridges a lot more of the next two facilities while finally getting to the actual, unrelated to the Battle Frontier, plot that doesn't have any justifiable reason to have been kept a mystery until now.
I'm also fairly certain that after two volumes, Todd's name has never once been mentioned. That's insane that your secondary ride along character is never named. I only know his name is Todd because of the wiki.
All I really have to say about this story arc so far is that Emerald is not my favorite of the main characters to follow. Good thing that the story is interesting. I mean, this kid doesn't even like Pokemon!
