The Convergence: Broken Magic by Richard French is about fated mates, enemies to lovers, second chance and forbidden romance. Samantha Reed is tasked by the Federation with finding and destroying Connor Blake. but when she meets him...again...her soul cries out to his. She has been lied to and what she does next could either save their world or destroy it.

The story is fast paced with lots of action. Circumstances bring together an unlikely group of characters that will do what is necessary, what is right, to save their world, no matter the consequences. I was wrapped up the danger that surrounded them...and that ending. It was a blow that I wasn't prepared for, but, there is Book II, The Convergence: Restoration, so we shall see what comes next.

I have read some of Richard French's work and felt it was very likely that The Convergence series would be a good one, and I wasn't wrong.

A rich, emotional, and mind-bending continuation of a fascinating sci-fi fantasy universe

As someone who reads a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, I went into The Convergence: Broken Magic expecting a standard “save the universe” story but Richard French delivered something much deeper and more personal. This book takes the large-scale stakes of cosmic collapse and pairs them beautifully with an intimate story about identity, memory, and lost connection.

Samantha Reed is one of the most compelling protagonists I’ve read in a while. She’s loyal, conflicted, and utterly believable as someone torn between duty and a truth she can no longer ignore. Her dynamic with Connor Blake carries so much emotional weight not just romance, but a genuine exploration of what it means to share a soul that’s been forcibly divided. Their connection unfolds slowly and powerfully, and it’s written with the kind of emotional intelligence that makes their choices feel real.

The worldbuilding is excellent without being overwhelming. The idea of magic being shattered and artificially separated gives the story both a philosophical and political edge. It reminded me a bit of Shadow and Bone’s layered magic system mixed with the sense of wonder and discovery from The Ten Thousand Doors of January. The balance between action, mystery, and emotional revelation kept me hooked from start to finish.

French’s prose flows smoothly poetic at times, but not overwrought. He does a great job of keeping the reader grounded even when the narrative gets metaphysical. The pacing builds steadily toward an explosive climax, and the final chapters had me reading late into the night.

If you enjoy stories that blend science fiction concepts with deep emotional and metaphysical themes, Broken Magic will absolutely hit the mark. It’s both a thrilling space fantasy and a meditation on what it means to be whole. I finished it feeling satisfied, yet already wanting to revisit the earlier book in The Convergence Series to catch all the nuances I might have missed.

Highly recommended for readers who love complex worldbuilding, emotional stakes, and stories where love and cosmic destiny collide.

Every once in a while, I stumble on a sci-fantasy that feels both classic and new, and The Convergence: Broken Magic did exactly that for me. Richard French builds a world where magic has been split (politically, philosophically, and literally) and the cost of that fracture touches everything. What I loved most is how the book stays emotional even while juggling heady ideas; the opening teases the cosmic stakes with “shadow and light” patterns that feel sentient, immediately hinting this isn’t just good-vs-evil but a deeper question of how things were broken, and whether they can be made whole again.

The chapters (especially in the middle) blend brisk action with chewy ideas about power, control, and institutional memory without drowning you in exposition. I especially enjoyed how the story frames “unified” magic as something natural and healing, while forced control breaks people and worlds; a theme that gives the battles real emotional stakes.

Author French’s prose is clean and unfussy, letting the math-meets-myth logic of the magic system carry the wonder. The antagonist’s motivation, born from trauma and fear, adds dimension to the conflict and avoids mustache-twirling; policy, paranoia, and grief entwine into a believable agenda that feels tragically real. This nuance makes the late-book confrontations land harder because the “villain” isn’t simply wrong; he’s convincingly afraid of what ungoverned power can do.

The finale pays off the promise of the title, with sacrifice, restoration, and an earned sense of hope. Without spoiling anything: the book argues that wholeness requires consent and cost, not coercion, which is a beautiful take for a series opener. I closed the book feeling satisfied yet curious about where this universe goes next, which is always my favorite way to end the first in a series. If you like high-stakes magic systems grounded in character and consequence, this belongs on your TBR.

What if your history of reality is not true? And what if the controllers of your reality have imposed rigid order in place of reality’s natural chaos and creative processes? Convergence: Broken Magic is set in a space travel future with reality control enforced by the Federation and their Academy graduate magic practitioners of light and shadow magic. But the history that students Samantha and Connor learned is not the true history of their reality and they accidentally stumble onto the powerful and deliberately hidden parts of history and their current capabilities. The Federation’s Marcus Williams is attempting to assert control of reality retroactive to all past history. Chaos is the breaking down of old static patterns and opens up the reality for new possibilities to progress. What can stop Williams desperate attempt to impose total control before his attempt completely shatters reality at its core? Can Samantha and Connor’s forbidden unified magic restore the natural chaotic flow of reality from the order imposed by Williams and the Federation?

Broken Magic is a sparkling and original tale of heroism and sacrifice with inspiring characters. I’m looking forward to the next books in this series.

The Convergence: Broken Magic by Richard French blends sci-fi and fantasy with an enemies to lovers romance at its core.
Federation Enforcer Samantha Reed is sent to eliminate Connor Blake, a rebel blamed for reality itself beginning to fracture. But when she finally confronts him, it becomes clear their connection runs deeper than politics. Long-buried memories resurface, revealing that their souls were once joined before the Federation shattered magic centuries ago.
As the mysterious Convergence approaches a cosmic force attempting to repair what was broken, Samantha and Connor realize their bond may be the key to stabilizing the collapsing galaxy. Reuniting means defying the very system Samantha swore to serve, and putting a target on both their backs.
With high stakes, hidden truths, and a found family dynamic among their allies, The Convergence: Broken Magic delivers action, emotional tension, and a romance that feels central to the fate of the universe itself.

The Convergence: Broken Magic was a great first book in the series and a story I truly enjoyed sharing with my 13-year-old son. The pacing was quick, with a lot happening throughout, which kept him fully engaged and eager to keep reading. While I personally would have enjoyed a bit more detail and world-building, the level of description and momentum felt just right for a younger teen audience.

What made this book especially meaningful was the opportunity to read it together and talk about the story as it unfolded. My son loved the characters and the adventure, and it sparked some great conversations along the way. We’re both looking forward to the next installment and are hopeful to see some familiar characters return. Overall this was a fun, engaging read for teens and a great choice for parents looking for a book they can enjoy alongside their kids

When Samantha Reed is ordered to hunt down her former partner, she expects betrayal, not the truth that could unravel reality. Magic was never meant to be divided, and neither were they. As fractures tear through the world, Samantha must choose: uphold the Federation that trained her or fight beside the man who holds the key to restoring what was lost, even if it means sacrificing everything A gripping tale of forbidden magic, broken memory, and a love powerful enough to rewrite existence.

I didn’t expect to get this emotional over a fantasy book, but The Convergence really hit me hard. The themes of truth, control, and love were so well woven together. I kept pausing just to let certain lines sink in. Samantha’s inner conflict, Connor’s mission, the breakdown of reality all of it was written with intensity and care. It’s not just a love story, it’s a fight for wholeness.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A must-read for lovers of epic fantasy and emotional twists.

There is a harmony between light and dark, one that is needed to keep things balanced.
This book proved that and kept you wondering what was going to happen next.
Two people who are both part of a whole that was forcibly separate come back together with the understanding that they need to fix what someone else was desperate to control.

Samantha and Connor’s relationship is everything. So raw, so complicated, and so powerful. Their bond practically jumped off the page. The concept of magic being split to control people? Chilling. And so well-executed. Loved the philosophical undertones about power, control, and truth.
