The newest standalone Adventure Time story written by the head writer of the show!
If you love ADVENTURE TIME, you can’t get beat a comic series written by one of the show’s writers and the creator of Root Beer Guy! Also great if you like bananas... Turns out that there is a lot to being a Banana Guard—but being a Banana is not mandatory. This crazy adventure follows Root Beer Guy as he starts his search for new recruits among Ooo’s citizens. Only the best will do in this quest to protect the Candy Kingdom! Not only are the Banana Guards hilarious as the Candy Kingdom’s protectors, but this series is written by Kent Osborne, head writer of the ADVENTURE TIME show. Kent is responsible for some of our favorite episodes of the show and we’re thrilled to have him write his first comic book. This collection includes Adventure Time: Banana Guard Academy #1-6.
Glob Darnit! Started off so jocular and ending up being tedious. I mean.... " butts are for poopin", if you don't laugh at that then you're not human. Get out you alien! Princess Bubblegum opens up the Banana Guard Academy to everyone. Everyone under the sun wants to join. The commandant doesn't agree and tries to get the students to quit. And there is always something to learn from the kingdom. Be yourself and never change. I'll do whatever I glob damn please.
I love Adventure Time and I love the Adventure Time comics.
This one however holds a distinction from the others, it made me laugh, out load and hard.
The others have got me with their creativity and/or effective emotional moments but this one simply got me to laugh while reading a comic. The characters, situations and interactions all work together beautifully.
Didn't quite capture the craziness of the show. It bugged me that LSP, Finn, and Jake were on the cover when they didn't appear in the story (well, Finn and Jake did briefly, but not as I was lead to believe from the cover illustration).
Probably closer to 3.5 stars, but as I can't give half stars, and it's not quite 4 star material, this will have to do.
I really enjoyed this story for the most part. A couple of chapters were slower than others, but on the whole the pacing was great, and it was fun to dive into the backstory for various characters.
The main place that it loses stars for me is that certain panels seemed a bit childish, and although I know this isn't targeted at me (I'm an adult) I feel it's targeted towards younger teenagers, whereas some of the jokes felt like they'd do better for an 8 or 9 year old. The particularly childish jokes just didn't flow well with the other more scientific or higher level humour.
For the most part, this graphic novel deals with some really clever concepts, especially the idea of time travel and parallel dimensions. I won't go into detail so as to avoid spoilers, but certain dialogues really make you think about our perceptions of the world around us, and how our actions interact with the future.
The last chapter goes off on a complete tangent, but it's epic and I love it. I think that the ending is really well done, and rounds the story off really nicely.
I bought this on sale, and was very happy with my purchase :)
If you're sick and have run out of Adventure Time, as I have, then this is an enjoyable way to pass a few minutes, but it is inconsistent with its characters and its plot is... "random" in the childish way and not with the brilliant narrative sophistication of its parent series.
When Princess Bubblegum decrees that ANYONE, not just bananas, can now become Banana Guards, there are all sorts of strange characters who are just itching for a chance to show their stuff.
This was a pretty cute outing that shines a light on some of the minor characters.
Well. I think I read into this too much. It's very strange. But it's adventure time, so I'm not sure what I expected. The plot goes in an unexpected direction.
The highlights from previous status updates:
"mr. cupcake is currently going out with a banana guard with mutant boobs just to reinforce that yes, that is a female. let me just say something, IT'S A BANANA. IT IS THE LEAST FEMININE FRUIT I CAN THINK OF DUE TO ITS CONSTANT USE AS A PHALLIC SYMBOL. yet somehow, they find it necessary to give the genderless fruit breasts just to make it hetero AF."
page 19 10.0% "holy shit the bananas used a freaking high pressure fire hose on the peacefully picketing mr. cupcake. Police brutality, dude. It's everywhere."
02/20 page 24 13.0% "punchy in -- I love to party!
what an obvious kool aid reference, but you know what, I love it anyway."
02/20 page 32 18.0% "what the hell is this racially predestined society?"
02/20 page 56 31.0% "are you listening gunter?" "wenk" "it's always 'wenk' with you."
This story started out really fun. princess bubblegum needs to expand her Banana guard because lots of food reserves aren't being eaten. She decides to open the guard applications to all people not just bananas.
The rest of the story kind of lost it focus for me. the jokes were ok but the individual issues fell short for me. The art is gorgeous though, the characters are beautifully rendered just like on the animated show.
This comic started out good, but let me down in the last issue. Overall, I thought the story was pretty fun and was digging the parallel universes aspect, but bringing back the alternate future where Ooo is taken over by robots was tired in my opinion. I feel like they could have done so much better with this one.

Easily the better of the Adventure Time miniseries-- less a rehashing of tired tropes and ideas or an echo of something much nicer but something unique and new. The writing is great and the art is done with more personality than the average tie in comic.
I am spending my morning apparently reading all of these, sorry everyone.
Really enjoyed this story focusing on side characters. So far, the most Ryan North-y of all the non-Ryan North trades.
Recommended for those who like the numbered trades by Ryan North. It doesn't have the text at the bottom, but it reads just like one of the weirder episodes of AT. Loved the ending!
A nice reminder of why I generally do not read Adventure Time (or any Cartoon Network) spinoffs. It still turned a few tropes on their heads, from the publishing industry even, but that alone does not a good story make. Worth looking at if you are in Barnes & Noble and have a few hours to kill.
Osborne has some funny moments, but there are also times when the characters' voices don't come across as well as they could, and the plot is a bit messy. Also, the lettering is very distracting. Even panel composition is an issue. That being said, it's still fun and whimsical.
I'm not really sure what to rate this. I thought it started out good enough, but I wasn't a fan of the last chapter/issue. There was really no need to make it "serious". I think Peppermint Butler (Pep But lol) is funnier as a weird side character.
A wackadoodle adventure that is ostensibly about the Banana Guard but in reality focuses on Peppermint Butler & a break in the space-time continuum. Weird, fun and light, this one is.
Pretty much Police Academy redone with sentient candy (and one small elephant), at least until it turns all timey-wimey halfway through. Also, the first time I recall one of the comics reacting to specific events in the show rather than taking place in some indistinct spot between episodes.
