Move over Quentin Blake, I've got a new favorite illustrator. This is Gary Locke's second picture book for kids. (For some reason he's not given credit for this book on Goodreads...I'll have to see what I can do about that.) Learning about the funny names of birds was fun, but Locke completely made this book with the vivid, cartoonish illustrations. On top of that he's illustrated a Christian comic! I want to buy this guy dinner and have him draw my family portrait.
Really well done rhythmic book that introduces kids to all kinds of birds. It doesn't say much about the various winged creatures, but it sure makes you appreciate the wide variety of birdlife in our world. The illustrations compliment the rhyme, and add an element of silly fun to the book. When we finished this book my nephew said, "man, that guy really likes birds!" Fun and enjoyable book!
Best for kids ages 5 and up. Early Literacy Skills: Print Motivation, Letter Knowledge, Vocabulary, Phonological Awareness

Great characters of the different birds that will keep kids reading this book. Once they have master all these tongue twisters they can get the real information about the birds inside.
Illustrated by Gary Locke. Catalogs species of birds in a funny way. Illustrated in a "caricature" style. Funny. Will have to see how it goes over at storytime since the species probably won't be recognized by the kids. Very rhythmic though, so I think they'll still like it.
Many many names of North American birds in an easy-to-memorize chant format, accompanied by caricature-style illustrations. Back matter contains details on each bird.
