Rate this book
Hex You is the third book in the Sisters of Salem series about twin witches from powerhouse duo P.C. and Kristin Cast!

Twin sisters, Mercy and Hunter are witches, direct descendants of the Goode family, the founders of their town. After the murder of their mother at the hands of a foul demon, they have become the protectors of the Gates to different underworlds–ancient portals between their world and realms where mythology rules and the darkest of creatures exist.

Mercy and Khenti are trapped in the Ancient Egyptian Underworld and need Hunter’s help to escape. But while Hunter searches for a way to save them, other evil threatens Goodeville. Amphitrite is still looming–and she wants vengeance against Hunter. With the gates rapidly weakening, Amphitrite lures out a deadly creature and sets it free on the residents of Goodeville. It will take everything in Mercy and Hunter’s power to stop the goddess and seal the gates once and for all.

I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this book. Before starting it I read book 1 and enjoyed it. Book 2 was not available and had a very long wait list so I skipped it. I liked the blurb of this book and wanted to give it a go! Comments on this book mentioned it was better than books one and two so I was very happy.
This has the twin witches again. With the death of their mom, they are gate guardians, now. (I must have missed something big in book 2.)
In book one, the twins had very different natures. One was very nice, the other not so much. Now both are Mean Girls. I really lost what attraction for the nice one really fast.
There was lots of action, a confusing plot, unlikable characters, and a rushed ending. I think I liked book one so much better.
I was really wanting to enjoy this book! But I am thankful for the chance to try.

PC Cast: you can't read it as a standalone
Me: yeah I'm pretty sure I liked it more than most of the other reviews I've read, so...

I jumped into this book (courtesy of Wednesday Books ♥️) without having read the first two in the series, so I'm rating it as a standalone YA. I'm falling somewhere into the 3.5 star range

Overall I have mixed feelings on the book. If you don’t think too hard this is a fairly entertaining and fast paced read. I think you’d get more out of having read the first two books but it was easy to pick up the storyline.

I never got into much YA of this contemporary nature. It strikes me as silly that a powerful goddess would give two shits about antagonizing an American teenager. Amphitrite isn’t a goddess who shows up too much in American literature so that was briefly interesting, then disappointing because there’s not much actual mythology here. There’s a hodgepodge of different mythologies and underworlds and while it’s not hard to just read and jump into the story, I do think with a background it would (hopefully) all make more sense.

This is where I surrender my safety pin and stop poking holes in the plot, because I could go all day. (This is why I don’t read much YA)

All plot hole poking aside, it wasn’t a bad story. The dialogue felt immature and the fast pacing felt geared towards younger teens, but then a character casually mentions “bjs” and something about “slut-shaming”, a term which I had to Google. Apparently we are encouraging teens to sleep around now, so that’s… Uh…what? Besides those two instances the book is tame from a sex and mature content standpoint, but I’d still recommend for older teens.

Themes for teens? One thing I liked. The sisters have to resolve their internal & interpersonal conflicts and choose love over power & selfishness. I liked some of the friendships and the emphasis on doing the right thing after learning from one’s mistakes. Actions have consequences!

Character wise, personally I hardly ever enjoy teenage characters anymore. These felt very teenage and self centered, volatile, and changing their minds every ten seconds, so, like normal teenage girls. I liked them well enough and assumed that the characters have been established in the prior books, so there wasn’t as much development in this third novel. I won’t hold that against the book.

Xena the cat person familiar and Khenti were my favorites, I did love their dialogue.

SO… OVERALL?
Fast paced plot, some good banter, and a snarky cat person. The ending was actually sad as hell to me so I give the authors credit for that. I enjoyed the audiobook and the narrator tampered down the feel of the writing. It’s a solid YA read with a thankfully cute prologue to take the edge off.

TL: DR – I liked it but it’s definitely geared towards teenagers

Thank you to Wednesday Books for an eARC and Macmillan Audio for an ALC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

3.5/5

Hex You is the third and final installment in the Sisters of Salem series by PC & Kristin Cast. I loved the House of Night series and it’s why I originally requested this one starting with Omens Bite (book 2). I’ve had a more love/hate relationship with this series but I think overall, I did enjoy it.

I had an interesting relationship with the twins. We’ve all gone through a lot these past three books 😂. Hex You was definitely the best for their relationship. We finally get to see the twins communicate with each other and try to repair their relationship.

I will say Hunter was my favorite. And it’s not only because she’s a lesbian. Tho I do love her for that. Hunter has also had her own plan and gone with her instincts. Also she’s a cosmic witch and that’s really cool. I was sad that we never get to see Hunter have any sort of romantic subplot meanwhile Mercy has two throughout the series. I am glad there wasn’t the case of the bury your gays but I also wanted more for Hunter

I think this was probably the best of the series since we finally see some character growth. But overall, I was not a fan of this series.

Rep: white lesbian cis female MC, white cishet female MC, Egyptian cishet male side character, Egyptian side characters, white cishet side characters.

CWs: Murder, death, grief, blood, religious bigotry, prejudice against witches, injury/injury detail, snake like creature, violence, misogyny, sexism.

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

My Thoughts: This is book number 3, and the final, in the Sisters of Salem series. These books connect with a continuing plot, so it is best to read them in order, if possible. The series continues with the sisters, Mercy and Hunter. The first book opens with the sisters being polar opposite, one is nice and one is mean. This book introduces them as both mean, their mother has passed, so this may contribute to how the characters are being portrayed. The last book ended with an open plot and this one picks up on that plot, but also develops further plots. While I enjoyed the sisters, in their opposite format, in the prior two books, in this book, they became unlikeable, again, probably for character development.

This story was fun and lighthearted. The characters were further developed in this novel with some depth, fantasy, witchy, and just well done. The author’s writing style was a lighter read with aspects of paranormal, magic, great world building, and keeps you engaged with a smaller book. The reviews on this book is that it is the best in the series, which I agree with. This was a great witchy series. I would recommend, but I would start with the first book, Spells Trouble, then Omens Bite and then this one so that you are not confused by the plot.

Hex You is the third book in the Witches of Goode Family series by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. The series follows the adventures of twin sisters Mercy and Hunter, direct descendants of their town's founders, the Goode family. After their mother's death at the hands of a vile demon, they have become the guardians of the Gates to various underworlds—ancient passageways between their world and realms where mythology prevails and the worst of creatures reside.

In Hex You, Mercy and Khenti are trapped in the Ancient Egyptian Underworld and require Hunter's assistance to escape. But, while Hunter seeks for a means to save them, another evil threatens Goodeville. Amphitrite is still on the horizon, and she intends to get revenge on Hunter. The gates are progressively deteriorating.

This novel was marginally better than the prior two. Nonetheless, it is not pleasurable. The writing was poor. It was tough for me to keep track of all of the different characters and their corresponding plotlines. The ending felt rushed and incomplete.

So u definitely have mixed feelings about this whole series, but especially this book in general. Overall, I liked the story and characters. I think all the side characters were really well developed. One of the main things I didn’t really like was how Christianity was portrayed in the book. I know that it was mainly used for the plot, but to be honest , it just seemed like the book was mocking Christians. I feel like this series overall has had a bit of a problem with stereotyping people, but aside from that, I really liked the book.

I would like to thank the publisher, Wednesday Books, for providing me with an ARC.

This is the final book in the Sisters of Salem trilogy. I will admit that I enjoyed the first couple of books. However, this last one left me lost and confused. I felt that this was just a bridge and left over from the second book. It did not feel like a finale. I don’t know, but it was just missing something in order to make it feel like it was the last book. I don’t know other than to say that the overall finale felt weak.

This one picks right up from where the last book left off. We are following our characters as they battle to take down a villain and overcome all of the difficulties that come along with being a witch. New characters and new plots are still being given to us. Normally, I would have been okay with these, but it felt like we were still adding to the overall story rather than trying to round things down. I know that there are other series out there that do this, but I felt that it did not work here. With these books being so short, there really is not enough time to justify adding to the story. In order for all of this to work, the book needed to be longer.

I have loved Mercy and Huter up until this point. However, I found them to be very unlikable. I didn’t like the way they treated people who had been there for them right from the start. They talk down to their friends, preach to them, and all of the characters just go along with it. Whenever the other characters try to speak up, they are just belittled. I got tired of the all-knowing attitude that the twins had. I have nothing against smart or wise characters, but the way that the twins presented themselves was a turn off.

The writing was okay. It is childish and immature, but that has never bothered me. It does what is needed to tell the story. Sometimes I do like the lighter writing and tone because it makes the book go by quicker. Not only that, but it adds a fun element to it. I don’t know if anyone else feels this way, but I do. Sometimes you do want a little lighter.

Overall, I was just disappointed by this last book. I did enjoy the first two though.

This book comes out on January 31, 2023.

This is the third book in the Sisters of Salem series. I would highly recommend starting from book 1 'Spells Trouble' if you want to read this book. They all connect and one starts where the last one ends.

I really enjoyed this series. I like how the three books flow together seamlessly. The ending was satisfying with everything tied up but not worked out in a fairy tale wrap up sort of way. Once again I enjoyed the writing and the characters. This trilogy is a great choice if you're looking for something fun and witchy.

The third and final book in the Sisters of Salem trilogy was exactly what I expected it to be, and that is; not good.

I have to say that we did have some character development in this book but it still didn’t make me love, or even sympathise with any of them. The dialogue remains overly cringe and the writing was poor.

In my opinion this book was pointless because the other two book in the series were better. This could have been a duology for sure.

Thank you Netgalley and P.C Cast, Kristin Cast for the opportunity to read the eARC of Hex You!

This really felt like it could have been wrapped up in 2 books instead of 3. I think the story had a few slow spots just for fill in and to be dragged out a bit. This book did have the most action in it and the ending was satisfying but not quite surprising. This series is overall okay but not the most exciting trilogy I have ever read.

I will post my review on Netgalley, Barnes and Noble, Goodreads and Google play and Amazon

This one really brings things to a close, but it was a hard road these sisters traveled. Along it they made mistakes, alienated each other and others. But they were able to fix their mistakes, reconcile and by the end of the book, they were the loving sisters they had been, just really, really battered. I especially like the last bit, loved that Hunter and Mercy got to see each other, be happy and Hunter found a new companion, a bit of familiar she had lost along the way.

A fun easy YA witchy read. I enjoyed how the story progressed after book 2 and the character development of both sisters. I was surprised at the ending but it did make sense for the story.

The dialogue was flat at times and seemed too over the top but intriguing characters and I loved Xena the most.

Book Three of the Sisters of Salem

Still full of teenage angst, the sisters work on their problems & those of the town. Lots of anger, manipulation & ugly emotion. It wraps up in under five pages, a writing choice I detest.

The final book in the Sisters of Salem catches up with Mercy as she is trying to escape the Ancient Egyptian world. Hunter, not only is trying to heal the other gateways but now needs to help her sister escape.

First, this book was better than the first two, but it wasn't that great. On the plus side, there wasn't graphic adult content as there was in the first book, though it was mentioned. That, and with some violence, I can't recommend this book, or series, to any reader under sixteen.

It read as if it was aimed at tweens, or younger. With how dumb-downed the writing was, I had a hard time remembering that these girls were sixteen. They acted and talked more like ten-year-olds. Even the adults/parents in the story acted like kids.

The story wrapped up the series really easily, with the mysteries and the solutions 'ah-ha' moments, but left just enough room for a spin-off... *eye-roll.

Things that irked me: feeling as if I was a seven-year-old being lectured on the magical plot of the story, and how the twins preached to their friends was wrong. But then again Em also acted like a blonde dimwit, and that was how she was treated.

For being magical and gifted, the girls, I feel, were snobs and just inches away from treating everyone else as if they were stupid pieces of dirt that weren't good enough to dust their shoes. Not my ideal for someone with magical powers tasked to protect me and my town. I could see them turn into the bullies, 'kneel to them or they'll Merrily curse you.'

I highly anticipated this book after the previous and read through it quite quickly. It kept my interest very well but there were times I found myself thinking it was starting to get a bit silly however the end ******spoiler alert****** tore me apart! It tied it all together so well but ripped my heart right out!

When I saw a digital ARC for Hex You, the final book in the Sisters of Salem trilogy, available for review on Edelweiss, I jumped at the chance to request it. Granted, I hadn’t read the first two books in the series, but I was interested to see what was new from the mother-daughter team that brought us House of Night a decade earlier. To catch up, I powered through the first two books in the series, Spells Trouble and Omens Bite, on audiobook—and unfortunately, when I say “powered through,” I don’t mean “listened in eager anticipation.” More like, “Gotta keep going because I agreed to write a review, and these books are actually kind of boring!”

But enough about me. What is the Sisters of Salem series about? It’s a trilogy that centers on the efforts of Hunter and Mercy Goode (pronounced Goody), who are twin witch sisters assigned as guardians to their town’s secret magical gates. These gates, which look like trees, prevent dangerous magic creatures from wreaking havoc on the unsuspecting, mostly non-magical populace of Goodeville. Although Hunter and Mercy start out the series as very close, they’ve had a falling out by the end of Book 1. By the end of Book 2, the twins have learned their lessons, but now circumstances conspire to keep the sisters separated forever!

That leads us to Book 3, the aptly named Hex You. I made it 15% of the way in, which was just enough to learn the resolution of Book 2’s climax. Satisfied, I set the book aside for good and decided to write this incredibly verbose essay explaining why the Casts’ latest series, Sisters of Salem, just does not do it for me. First, let’s look at two of the three most important areas of good storytelling: world-building and characters. Here, the series gets high scores for interesting, well-rounded characters and detailed descriptions of the sisters’ magic rituals. In the case of plot, however, it could have been so much better.

I liked the fact that the sisters split up and then have to fight their way back to each other, all the while trying to solve the mystery of a creepy monster who’s going around town eating people’s eyeballs. However, the authors also decided to cover the POV of the evil eyeball-eating monster, maybe to make him more sympathetic as a character? However, I found his POV chapters really boring, especially after he takes over the body of the local police chief and then spends a few POV chapters internally commenting on boring aspects of adult humans. Is it really necessary to know what the bad guys are up to?

So anyway, who would be interested in this series? If you liked the second half of the House of Night series, which mirrors this series in both its highs (Sister power! Magic spells!) and lows (multiple boring 3rd-person POV), you might find this series of interest.

Recommended for Gr 10 Up for language, eyeball-eating violence, and some unexpectedly mature romantic content.

I was provided an ARC via Netgalley, all opinions are my own.

This is the final installment of the Sisters of Salem series. I highly recommend you read this series in order as you will be very lost if you do not. This book picks up where book 2 left off with the sisters relationship still a bit in shambles but at the point where they are willing to accept their mistakes and make amends for the greater good. The gates that the sisters are responsible for are weakening by the minute, and Amphitrite is still up to no good. The sisters with the help of their friends have to heal their bond if they are going to heal the gates and the town.

The timeline isn't completely linear in this book which took a bit of getting used to. You will be in the present with Mercy in one chapter, then you will be in what is Hunter's present in the next chapter but it actually took place before the chapter you just read with Mercy. It jumps around a bit, and that can be a bit confusing at times. I felt the dialogue was a bit immature even for teenagers. I can get on board with Xena's speech being a bit strange because she isn't exactly human, but the rest of the dialogue (and there's alot of it) seemed really childish given the age of the characters. No teenagers I know talk the way the teens in the book talk and the conflict resolution was too convenient and rushed to make it feel authentic. The trilogy has been leading up to the healing of the trees, which the twins are guardians of, but the climax felt under developed and rushed.

Overall, this is a fun YA series. This particular installment is my least favorite of the trilogy. I think younger readers will enjoy this series. There is a little bit of everything from romance, to action and mythology, to magic. My main issues lie in the execution of this book when it comes to world building and plot. If you want some thing light and fun, you may not be bothered by those things.

Thank you so much for an advanced copy of Hex You!

Star Rating: 3⭐️

I was very excited to read the conclusion to this trilogy! Taken as a whole, the three books flow together really nicely. I enjoyed that the series was cohesive and that everything wrapped up pretty nicely in this book. Not perfectly, but in a satisfactory way! The characters were interesting, and I liked them for the most part.

My main issue with this book is, well, it's a little boring. I was disappointed that the series as a whole lacked a punch, really. This book particularly felt like it dragged. It was a nice conclusion to the series, but probably not one I'll pick up again or even keep on my shelves TBH.

I'm glad I read the series' conclusion, and again, I'm happy to know how everything wrapped up...I just felt like this book was lacking a bit on the engagement end of the plot/story.

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

It's the final installment in the Sisters of Salem trilogy. Book two ended with an enticing cliffhanger that hinted at the inclusion of Japanese mythology and one of the Goode sisters trapped in in the Egyptian Underworld.

Picking up where the last left off, we get to see the Goode twins rekindle their sisterly bond and battle the mystical forces attacking their town. The different myths are my favorite part of each of the books. The evil force stoking the flames of hate in Goodeville in this one was a well done touch to amping up the energy. I especially enjoyed the descriptive aspects of the Nure-onna and how the myth ties into the plot.

I feel there was more growth and character development in this book. There were unexpected plot twists and heart touching moments that felt like the Cast authors I've grown to love. Some areas had a bit of a rushed or underdeveloped feel but overall this was my favorite of the three books.

Themes of anger, abusive relationships, zealots, mob mentality and loss are just a few noteable mentions.

Thank you Wednesday Books for the beautiful gifted copy! All thoughts are my own.

I have LOVED, well not past tense, I LOVE PC and Kristen Cast. I saw the house of night books and got them and fell in love with.the series. This book is no different. I LOVE this book. The authors are setting a trailing blaze in their wake of YA books. This I did not realize this book was atrilogy. Now I cannot wait to read the next book. This book is so great. You can feel every emotion the twins in this book had. This book is filled wit love, has and everything in between. One thing I am not afraid to say, this book made me cry a river. Sad tears and happy tears. I am so glad I got this book!! Everyone who loves to read should read this duos books. Highly, highly recommended.

Third and final book in the Sisters of Salem series and we follow Mercy and Hunter again.

This time Mercy and Khenti are the main focus as they are trapped in ancient Egypt. Hunter searches for ways to help them escape and seal the gates once and for all.

It was okay, if I’m being honest. The series started out great but got a bit boring between book 2-3. A lot of cliche and what I felt was stupid moments. The plot was confusing at times but what saved it were the characters. And that’s what this book is, very character driven.

I definitely recommend the series if you like YA magical stories with sisterhood as the force.

Niestety panie Cast mnie mocno rozczarowały... Przykro mi, bo tom 2 był naprawdę świetny. Tutaj natomiast czekałam aż dobrnę do końca. Świetny był wątek końcowy i epilog bardzo mi się podobał. Początek też był niezły. Niestety środek był mocno przeciętny - a szkoda bo seria w moich oczach miała duży potencjał.

What a terrible ending to a mediocre series. Hunter saying “I’m the chosen one” seriously got on my nerves. She was a pretty terrible person. Oh and to just get rid of her goddess by touching her? What a cop out. Mercy’s storyline was so dumb and her death was not even upsetting. I wasn’t a fan of the ending either. I’m not sure why I’m giving this 2 stars.

It’s definitely YA, lots of teen drama. The witchy references were a bit over the top at times but actually fit with the YA drama.

This is the third book in the Sisters of Salem series. You must read the other two first as it is not a stand alone. I enjoyed this book the most out of the three. It had the most action and the best plot. I liked the demigods and mythology storyline and kept wanting more creatures. I thought the ending was satisfying and it tied up any loose ends. I will be reading more from these authors.

So many feelings but yet again I am faced with the problem of how to review without spoilers.
If you've read the first two you already know both sisters have relationships that need mending and mistakes that need fixing. All while still battling the evil that is slowly taking hold of their town. Time is running out on more things than one.
There were some characters who surprised me in this final installment and some who stayed true to who they've been this whole time. I must say this one had me worried about a couple of things. That ending. Oh my goodness. I will say is that the epilogue really helped tie it all together and there was a fair share of bittersweet tears. Don't let that stop you from finishing the story though because in my opinion the ending was done with a lot of heart and to me it really showed.
