The title is misleading. There is a brief intro to crochet, yarn and hooks. If you are a beginning crocheter these are definitely not one day projects. There should be more pictures and examples.
While I can certainly say that the patterns contained within this book are solid examples of the craft of crochet, I can also let any potential reader know that there are equally as good if not better patterns to be found on craft blogs and definitely on Ravelry. The author has no illustrations demonstrating stitches (just a couple of pictures showing the result of various stitches) so this is not a teaching tool. I was particularly disappointed that Ms. Asselin indicated she used an acrylic yarn (some are fine, others are cheap and crunchy) for her projects but didn't name the specific colors of a project in order to aid readers who want the same results. It felt lazy.
I wasn't overly impressed with this book. It looks as though it would be a pretty good resource for beginners, given the writing style and the generic information presented... but then the yarn amounts are given in ounces, not yards/meters. There are no original patterns here that can't be found with a simple search either on Ravelry or through Google, though I will say giving the different size options for the given patterns was a nice touch. The layout is highly amateur, with huge font size and poor line- and page-breaks. Instructions are written out (that is, there are no charts) and each pattern has an included photo -- though the quality thereof varies.
Readers should also be aware that the "one-day" versions of the patterns are sized for small children or lapghans. This is not criticism! Indeed, it was quite refreshing not to see 25mm hooks and superbulky yarn on every page.
I've gotten several books on crocheting Afghan, but this was different. I put down all my hobbies when my husband developed cancer. Its been 5 years since he passed and I was trying to get started again. Got grandkids I want to give something of me. Found out I have forgotten lots of crochet stitches, and think I have just the book to get me back on track! Thanks for developing this "how to" book for oldies like me.
Simple afghan patterns with project pictures. Patterns all use basic crochet stitches. Unless you are especially fast l do not think the afghan can be completed in one day. Joining the afghan squares was not adequately included.
Thank you for sharing your patterns in this Wonderful book!! I'm looking to make my grandson an Afghan! He wants multi colors, the colors, orange, yellow, blue, green, purple, the yarn I found is Bernat color school it's a bulky yarn so I am looking for a pattern that will be compatible. Do you think your Rainbow 2, the squares, pattern could be adjusted to use this heavier yarn?? He has requested apliques for the squares. He is also autistic so the heavier yarn is a must in hopes the blanket can weight more. I've also seen your book advertised for Weekend Blankets. This book depicts the use of bulky yarn in one or more patterns. Would you recommend I acquire that book and utilize a different pattern you've created?? The end result size I'm hoping for is a full or to something equivalent to doubling a throw so he can use it folded or speed it out. Thank you for taking the time to read this I know it's not exactly a review but I didn't see another option for possibly contacting you for feedback available. Michelle (Mije0209@gmail.com)
This little book is lovely. I've crocheted on and off since I was 9 years old. I know lots of stitches and have made blankets, amigurami and other "stuff". I have a dislike of standard pattern layout and the abbreviations for stitches because it doesn't really take more effort to write full words and complete sentences.
Barb, explains things really well and uses sentences instead of the typical patterns. It's approachable and demystifying.
I love this book and found several patterns I will crochet again and again! Beautiful and helpful too as this old chick learned a new thing too... The safety pin idea for the first chain (thereby marking it). What a cool helpful idea! Think You Barb Asselin!
It was very easy to follow the patterns. I was able to follow easily and reading the directions made my crocheting enjoyable. I have made six blankets already. Thank you.
Awesome. The best thing about this book is the instructions were very easy to follow and the pictures were very helpful.
This book is excellent for the first-time crocheter. It is also perfect for the seasoned crocheter or as a refresher if you have been away from crochet for either a short or a long time. The patterns are written well and are easily understood. Thanks for taking the time to put this book together and to make it free.
The projects in this book are easy, and quick for beginners and more advanced crocheted alike. The patterns are well written, materials needed are easy to obtain and photos are very attractive and show the project for each pattern. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick project or a gift.
This is a book for beginners. It needs more photos or illustrations to help beginners. Suggested amount of yarns are in ounces instead of yards or meters. Afghans for babies can be done in a day, but not the larger sizes. I like the afghans I saw pictures in the book. I will be making some if them.
Barb Asselin, I really enjoyed your book. The tools and the stitches were a great reminder to me. Love your honesty about the craft production time table. I really like 4 of the patterns. Really good wished more were included. But i will make these 4 using different colors. Thanks!
There’s a good reference section at the front explaining fibers and tools. The patterns look pretty easy, though I say that as someone who’s been crocheting quite a while. Nothing too fancy, but they wouldn’t be fast if they were. I like this and it was worth the price, I think.
I am glad to see a one day project. Sometimes mine get so involved the are one month or more. Yes I would recommend it. Written well and will look at others she has written.
Good Book For "Wheel. Cupcake, Whirl n Mandala" Yarns
Nice book n nice pictures of each pattern. Baby blankets n nice afghans. Lots of color changes which means lots of weaving in ends. Thats why I think these patterns would work great using color changing yarns.
Great book for me and anyone who is not sure how to crochet. She has lots of projects that can be completed in one day. Her instructions are great!!!!!
Easy, fast, and easy to read directions. Also allows for your own creative juices to flow! Anyone can pick up this concise book and accomplish a project without feeling overwhelmed. Absolutely great for the Girl Scouts and a novice. It was a joy reading.
Easy to follow and lots of great relevant information especially for beginner crochet skills. I enjoyed making these quick and easy designs. Recommended
Very good instruction. Clearly explained so even a beginner could follow them. Really good choices, in multiple sizes. Also good ideas for yarn and tools needed.
Very easy book to follow. I didn't give 5 stars because there was no picture guide at the beginning
Easy Instructions were thoroughly stated Closer look at stitches would be nice I liked the one option for the way to do stitches Great book for beginners
These projects work up quick and easy. I enjoyed looking at these patterns. They make wonderful gifts. I like that she also gives you the option to make them larger if you have more than one day to work on them.
The intro info is fantastic, and the book is well organized. The patterns are easy to understand and execute. Beginners and advanced crocheters can benefit from this book.
This was basically the same stitches in different colors. The pictures were blurry in kindle. This might be okay for someone who has never crocheted a blanket but not a brand new crocheter.
Some really basic but most helpful patterns. Inspiring ideas. Good clear instructions. Photos of blankets could be better though as can't see end result.
