I have been a lifelong writer and storyteller. Salem, Oregon is where I spent my formative years and I graduated from Willamette University. After college, I spent a decade living in Portland, Oregon where I worked in advertising, game design, and technology.

I've written young adult and children's books for Scholastic, Little Brown Books For Young Readers and Katherine Tegen Books/ HarperCollins Publishers.

Well, I didn’t really like the previous two books in this series, and I didn’t like this one either. I found it confusing, and I really did not get what was going on for 90% of the book.


“There. And stay on your side of the rig. Whatever you’re finding on that Ill-fated ear expedition is probably nuclear.”



What?

“Stay on the water, it’s the safest place right now. At least if you crash you’ll hit the river.”
“IS it just me, or did he forget about drowning?”



Quite possibly.

“Did you roll around in the forest today? You smell awesome,”



And strangely enough, she actually meant that!


Apologies to HarperCollins and the author, this is one that I really should have read the first book prior to downloading this one! I really didn't get what was going on, and to be honest I didn't really care what happened to the characters at all.

Everyone Fears A Quake. Few Can Create One.

Quake is the final book in the Pulse Trilogy and let me tell you....Patrick Carman knows how to wrap up an incredible series in one final book. WOW....That is the first thing I thought when I turned the last page in this book....WOW.....and the next thing I thought was...What a gorgeous cover!! I love all of the covers in the Pulse Trilogy but this may be my favorite.

Pulse and Tremor were both phenomenal books and had plenty of action and romance scenes but Quake knocks both of them out of the water!!!!! WOW...Patrick Carman revealed so many secrets and twists in this final book that NO ONE will see coming. There were certain moments when I just stared at the words and said "WHAT? SERIOUSLY??" Yeah...Patrick Carman created an amazing trilogy with the Pulse trilogy. This trilogy has it all......intense action, spell-binding romance, and plenty of "WHAT??" moments.....

Quake picks up right where Tremor left off. The team (Clooger, Hawk, Dylan, Faith, and Jade) are all headed to a non-disclosed location in order to gather their thoughts and figure out their next move. They know that they have to stop Hotspur Chance and the evil twins, Clara and Wade, but they have to move carefully because this may be their last chance to defeat them and save the Western state.

"There are only four second pulses in the world. The first pulse gives them the ability to move almost anything with the power of the mind, including themselves. The second pulse deflects all things. These four people are close to indestructible, but not quite. Each one has a weakness, a Kryptonite."

Dylan and Faith's relationship has developed into a breath-taking romance and they are destined to be together. Their chemistry truly makes the story. They work together perfectly as a team and know how to support each others weaknesses and strengths. Their romance and their belief that they will be able to defeat the Wades and Hotspur Chance is what keeps the entire team fighting. They all believe in Dylan and Faith and will fight with them till the end.

"She thought but did not say..I love you, Dylan Gilmore. I never left you, not for one second, and then she turned back to Clara."

There are so many things that happen in this final book. I am just in awe at Patrick Carman's ability to write such an intense, emotional, epic conclusion to this series. I knew there would be lots of action and fighting scenes but I was not prepared for the emotional journey that I was about to endure also.....

If you have not read this series then you are truly missing out. This is a phenomenal Young Adult Dystopian/Sci-Fi series and I truly did LOVE it. I am completely obsessed with any story that is about survival and Quake is a perfect example. I am going to miss these characters ....BUT I am happy with how the series concluded...Bravo Patrick Carman....Bravo.....

I really have enjoyed this trilogy, it’s been exciting and something new, which isn’t something you get with a ton of dystopian/sci-fi books. After book two I was a little scared to go into this book, because in book two it was a little bit slower, but omg Quake was nothing like that! This book is fast paced and action packed! This book you do not get a breather or a stopping point. This book doesn’t have a lot of info for you to learn, just a tad bit, because we learned soo much in book two, this book was definitely the way to wrap up a trilogy. It was truly fantastic and I loved gotten to see that Faith and Dylan still have that amazing connection and they grow off of it together to make their love stronger.

One thing that I love even more about Faith in this book is that you get to really see Faith put that extra foot down in this book, yes, she always been tough and go forth, but in this book you really get to see her strength and how she will not say no or give up. Of course Dylan is the same guy I have come to grow and love with each book. But the best thing about both of them is what they do together, not just their love but holy moly their powers are unheard of! I almost couldn’t visualize it because of how astonishing it is.

If you haven’t read Pulse or Tremor and are reading this then I promise I’m not giving anything anyway in these but you do need to pick up Pulse as soon as you can. This series is an overlooked trilogy a lot, that more people need to read.

There is always action, heartache and romance, and on top of it many great characters to fall in love with, like Hawk. I am sad to see this story end, but it ended in a great way.

If you haven't read the first or second book in this series, I suggest you stop here. I cannot say there won't be spoilers for those book. Plus, you really can't read and understand this one without the background of the first and second books!

This book picks up where Tremor left off. Faith and Dylan have fought off Clara and Wade and are now trying to figure out a plan to defeat them and shut down Hotspur Chance from destroying the States.

This book has a bit more romance between Faith and Dylan than the last one. It's not suffused with it, but there are kisses here and there and you really get the sense of how in love these two have grown.

It also has more death. Death of characters you've grown to adore and love. And we meet a few new characters along the way, as well. Ones who become important to the entire movement Dylan and Faith have created.

I can't get into the plot too much without spoiling things, but let's just say Dylan and Faith fight tooth and nail along with Hawk and Clooger to stop Hostpur from killing millions of innocent people. It's not done without injury to any of them, or separation between them.

Carman does a nice job of keeping this book filled with just as much action as the last. Dylan and Faith really do become super heroes set on making things right. I love their faith in not only each other, but those they have come to trust. His scene are intense. Filled with enough juice to really keep you turning the pages and wanting more.

In the end, I was completely satisfied with how he chose to wrap things up. Carman ups the stakes in this book, taking Faith and Dylan on a wild hunt to right those that have been wronged and to ensure society has it's best chance at survival. HIs characters are strong and well thought out.

Fans of sci-fi and dystopian alike will enjoying the thrilling ride Carman has created with the Pulse trilogy. A emotionally charge roller coaster ride of super awesomeness.

Personal Response:
Just like the last, this book was extremely suspenseful because you were always waiting for the big fight to happen. When it eventually did, it definitely put you on edge because it seemed like they, Faith and Dylan, we're going to lose. This was by far my favorite book of the series because I loved the ending; they are always the best part unless it's a terrible ending.
Plot Summary:
In the beginning, they are at an abandoned lodge in the middle of the woods with their friends Hawk and Clooger. They are also with Clooger's brother, Carl, and his daughter, which is also Dylan's half sister, Jade. Hawk leaves in the middle of the night to try and get into the Western State, and the twins show up and after killing Clooger and Carl and fighting Dylan and Faith, they kidnap Jade. Faith and Dylan figure out from a not from Hawk that they need to travel to Portland, Oregon to find a tablet so they can stay in contact with him. They track Jade as well to the zoo in Portland. Hotspur Chance is hidden beneath it, as well as the Quinn's. After Faith and Dylan get trapped in separate rooms specialized so they can't use their pulse's to get out, Hawk finds a way to communicate. Later on, they eventually get out and trap the Quinn's in with the help of Jade who has a second pulse also, and then Faith kills Hotspur Chance. They bring the Quinn's to the Western State and trade them for Hawk; after Hawk gets out, then they go on and live their life.
Recommendation:
I would recommend this book to all teenagers. There is no specific gender either. I also think that even older people may enjoy this book. I gave this book and five out of five because it was, in my opinion, the best book in the series.

Personal Response: I like the book Quake because it really gets you wondering what’s going to happen next. Faith and Dylan will make a quake with the mountain. Jade runs off and then comes back and the Quinns will take Jade.

Plot:
The book Quake is an interesting book because it starts off with Dylan, Faith, Clooger, Jade, Carl, and Hawk in the woods, in a cabin just hanging out not using a pulse. Then they opened an audio message from Meredith and it said that Clooger is Jade's dad and that Dylan is Jade’s stepbrother. Later into the message, it got Jade so mad/sad that she said, “I HAVE SECRETS TOO!” Then she runs back into the cabin. A few hours later Jade goes outside again and then she started to lift things with her mind. Then Faith and Dylan saw Wade and Clara coming at HIGH speed and the Faith told jade to go head into the mountains and don’t come back no matter what. Then Dylan threw a tree at Wade and knocked him onto the ground and then Wade said, “ You shouldn’t have done that.” Then Clara had her gun with the titanium bullets in it and that was Faith’s weakness. Clooger and Carl had machine guns and started to shoot the Quinns and then Clara started to shoot back that actually killed Carl and Clooger. Later into the book Dylan and Faith started off to try to find where Hotspur Chance is and get Jade back from the Quinns. They had found them and they got into the building and then they instantly got captured and put in cages and they the thing that can go through their second pulse.

Recommendations:
I recommend this book to kids of the ages 12+ and I think it will get the kids excited. I think that they will get interested in the series. I also think they will get hooked.

bof. C'était... correct. Je pense que mon livre préféré de la série est définitivement le deuxième ahah.

Je trouve que Wade and Clara n'ont pas eu tant de développement de leur personnage et c'est domage. Je trouve qu'il y avait un beau potentiel, mainon, ça en est resté au "je te déteste et je vais essayer de te tuer jusqu'à mon dernier souffle". Rendre Clara et Wade plus humains, faire comprendre aux lecteurs leurs raisons et peut être même arriver à une entente avec Dylan et Faith aurait été vraiment intéressant et aurait ajouté une autre dimension au livre. Le pire c'est que c'était un peu ce qui se passait dans les livres précédents et il me semble que ça a juste régressé dans ce dernier livre. Je trouve que l'histoire était moins intéressante. C'était correct, mais vraiment pas plus que cela.

C'était une lecture appréciable et je ne regrette pas de l'avoir lu, mais je ne recommande ce livre et cette série.

Going into this I totally forgot almost everything from the previous books. However I was able to catch up very quickly and start to sort of remember what had happened !The way the pulses work is so cool to learn about. In this final book we learned so much more about how it started and who started it. I wasn't the biggest fan of our two main characters Faith and Daniel I felt like they were just boring and there head wasn't really exciting . I actually liked the secondary characters such as Hawk and Jade better. They had so much more humor and awesome personalities. Lastly I thought this book could've been way bigger! It felt rushed it and it kept going onto the next thing without much explanation of what had just happened. Despite all of those things I still really enjoyed the book and like the writing style!

so within the first 17 pages they've intimately kissed three times . And they were almost one paragraph after the other. Why?

In that video recording that Meredith sent she announced that Jade is her daughter and that Clogger is Jades father. Umm okay it's just so random and nobody is surprised by this Jade is just kind a like.....Okay....

Less than 100 pages in the book Clogger and Carl just get killed ! Really you had to kill off two of the best characters nobody's even really that sad about it!

Okay who is this cowboy guy and why are you trusting this him!!?

Hotspur Chance apparently invented the pulse. However he does not really say how he invented it. I really don't understand how he made the pulse and put it in people.

"Clara fired three fast round, the sound deafening inside the small space, and each one of them hit Dylan in the chest, falling to the floor like candy corn ." Falling like candy corn what does that even mean?

I honestly thought that they killed Jade and then all of a sudden she gets up she's like I am a second pulse. So she's not dead......

So Faith and Jade have this small conversation about Hawk and Jade goes "He likes to hold hands" and then Faith says "Yeah I know about that. "Why would you see that Faith seriously are you trying to make Jade jealous really?

Happy ending for now except for the fact that they still haven't killedd Wade and Clara so smart.....

Quake is the final book in the Pulse trilogy. It’s also by far the best in the series. I enjoyed the first book. The sequel was kind of boring and jumped around too much. This book is set in Oregon (Portland mostly, which is where Grimm is set!) and the characters are much more interesting and the dialogue is a lot funnier. I really enjoyed the references to pop-culture (or nerdy retro stuff) and literature.

I really enjoyed the new character, a thirteen-year-old named Jade. She had a crush on Hawk. Hawk is probably my favorite character. I would love to have a little brother whose super smart and could hack thing. Hawk is like Cody from Unremembered by Jessica Brody. Hawk likes real books and old movies. Usually you’d think a hacker would like only techie stuff. Dylan also like sci-fi movies.

My favorite thing about this series is probably the Pulse abilities. Telekinesis sounds like an awesome ability. Especially since Faith and Dylan can use it to fly. It’s also dangerous if used recklessly. This book also references old technology and our current technology and compares it to their futuristic technology. The tablets they use sound very cool. This book is not a true-dystopian, but it sometimes feels like one. The idea of the entire population of the US being concentrated into two states feels a little claustrophobic. It was done to help the environment supposedly, but it’s a bit extreme.

Now that this series is over, I hope that Patrick Carman has something else in the YA sci-fi/fantasy department cooking. I recommend this series to fans of Shatter Me, Blackout by Robison Wells and Darkest Minds.

Review
I liked this book a lot because it did not have an overload of action. I did, however, dislike one thing. I did not like that pretty much everyone dies. A likeable part of the ending is that it is an actual ending. It irritates me when books or movies do not have a complete ending.

Plot
Faith and Dylan are outlawed from the states so they camp out in a big abandoned mansion with Hawk, Clooger, Clooger's brother, and Jade. When Wade and Clara show up at the mansion to kill them they are not able to kill Hawk, Dylan, and Faith, but they capture Jade and kill Clooger and Clooger's brother. Hawk travels to the states to try and hack the dangerous computer program that Hotspur Chance created that would kill everyone in one of the states. Faith and Dylan are on a mission to kill Hotspur Chance and save Faith. After they fix everything they still have to be outlawed from the states.

Characterization
In the beginning of the book Faith still wanted revenge on Clara, Wade, and Hotspur Chance because they were the reason all her loved ones were dead. Towards the end of the book her thinking changed drastically because she didn't want revenge anymore. At the last chapter Faith was finally happy and could forgive Clara and Wade.

Recommendations
I would recommend this book to high school and middle school girls because the book has romance in it. Boys may have an interest because of the action and setting of the story but they probably would not like romance. This book does not have any foul language in it which makes it acceptable for middle schoolers to read.

Quake was an amazing book! I was kinda sad that this was the end of the series, but the way Patrick Carman ended the series was just so good. Even in the last parts of the book, he managed to put suspense and plot twist and things we still never expected. The one weakness that I saw was just at the beginning of the book everything was just slow and not full of action. Once you got to the middle and end though, well that's a whole different story. It was so action-packed and The fighting scenes with Faith and Dylan versus Clara and Wade were very actioned packed. I also liked how with all this action Carman still managed to put romance in the story, which made it that much better. I don't really like sad stories and in this story, there were some very emotional things like deaths, but that just made the story feel that much more real. Life doesn't seem real without a few scars here and there. Like Dylan said, ¨Battle scars. It was about time I got a few.¨
This quote just speaks to me cause I see this deeper meaning: Life without bad times just doesn't seem wholesome. In this story, too this meaning I think is often associated with Faith who always has to let that pain in to feel human again, like I said a world without some bad times just doesn't feel right no matter how bad we want it to.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I have to admit that after reading the previous two books in this series, it wasn't quite as interesting as I thought it'd be, but it was still great. I think that the idea for this series was great, and the writing was good, too. I guess one of my critiques is that it was relatively easy to guess what would happen next, although there were a few parts that surprised me. But overall, the writing was really good, and when I was reading it, it was easy to imagine what it may have looked like.

I guess one more critique would be that at some points, some of the characters' reactions seemed unrealistic (for example, when something terrible happened, Faith and Dylan didn't seem to be very anxious, concerned, or scared). Then again, this is fiction so it's not supposed to be realistic. But I do feel like their reactions could have been a little bit better. Overall, though, this was a really good book (and series), and I think the ending for it was perfect. If there was another book in this series, I would definitely want to read it. Out of 10, I would rate this at 7.5.

The book, Quake, is an outstanding book to read. The author is Patrick Carman and the book is the third and last book in the pulse trilogy. It was a very action-packed book that had twists and turns all the way to the end. Which always kept you on your toes waiting to read what will happen next. Something I found very interesting about the book was that the author includes in great detail what happened in the first two books which made it so you didn’t necessarily have to read the first two to understand what was going on in this book. In fact, I didn’t read the first two books in the trilogy and didn’t even realize it was a trilogy until close to the end of the book. The book, Quake, takes place in the year of 2051, where the United States is split off into two sections, the East and the West States. In this world, there are people born with what you call pulses. Faith and Dylan are third pulses which basically makes them indestructible and able to move mountains. They use their power to try to save the World from prison one and his two minions, Clara and Wade. Clara and Wade also have pulses, but every person who has a pulse has a weakness and there is nature. In conclusion, the Quake is a book that I would recommend to anyone and is sure to keep you always guessing as Faith and Dylan try to save their world as they know it.

"Quake" was very interesting, in the way it had parts of the story making you guess what comes next. Some of the things I enjoyed about this book was how the characters were woven in together, creating life-like personalities that are still developing. Also, the book had gave questions about the future; if we did this, what would happen, or what if we did this instead. The main antagonists also have some personality to them, well besides Hotspur Chance: he's the regular villain with a 'god complex'. However, something I didn't really like about the story is how rushed it was. The author introduced a new character in the story, reveals some secrets, and kills off some characters. Also, the ending was extremely rushed; it would have been better to add some more chapters into the book for more backstory into things.

I really enjoyed reading this book. There were a lot of plot twists and suspense in the book. The plot was interesting, and I like how as you continue reading the book, secrets gets revealed and everything kind of connects together. I also like how the main character Faith isn't perfect. She was impulsive and had a tendency of not following plans. Meredith and the other leaders didn't believe in her at first, but as time passes, they began to trust her more and more. In the end, she, Dylan, Jade and Hawk succeeded in defeating the Quinn twins and Hotspur Chance, but just barely.

I am not sure if this was a dystopian love story, suspense, or sci-fi mix-up. I hadn't read the first two books, so that probably didn't help in my not connecting with the characters. I felt like there could have been more dialogue, more about all the characters, especially Jade, and the romance sections left out. Also, a big question - Why was it titled "Quake"? A mountain was moved but an earthquake was not the main thrust of the story. Maybe "Moveable Mountains" might have been a closer ie-in.

A violent war is beginning and only Faith Daniels and Dylan Gilmore can stop it with their two powers combined together to make the ultimate quake.

1.5/5 at best. VERY disappointing. The writing, the plot, the everything just downgraded completely. "Pulse" was a wonderful book, so I felt obligated to continue the trilogy, but sadly it was highly disappointing. If you already read Pulse and Tremor, I would keep going. Though, it steered very off path from the original book, and changed the plot. Very upsetting. Loved Pulse, Not the rest of the trilogy.

I had to put this on reserve and anxiously awaited the email notifying me it had been added to my account. I believe there was a significant error in the location of their finding Chance Hotspur from Book 2. I was annoyed, but not enough to see if I had remembered incorrectly or the author had made a mistake. Pretty much speaks to my attitude for the rest of the book.

I really enjoyed this whole trilogy. Everything wrapped up nicely. I think I still liked the first book best.

I found it interesting that ALL the female characters are irrational (acted mostly based on their emotions). This did not spoil the book in any way, I just think it's interesting the author did that and might not even realize it.

This series is intended for Young Adults.

This trilogy was fine. I mostly read it because I was too lazy to find something else to read. I don't like it when authors don't explain how the powers were developed. Feels a little lazy. Overall, though, a perfectly fine trilogy and somewhat entertaining.

This was actually marginally better than the first two. I still didn't really "like" it, but I didn't dislike it as much as the first two. Glad I can move on now.
