Kason is pretty sure it is all kinds of stupid to keep hanging around Ryen’s coffee shop. And not only just because he doesn’t really like coffee. But he figures if he hangs around long enough, maybe he will get the courage to finally ask Ryen out. So he waits. And watches. And pretends to drink enough coffee to shock a dead man back to life. It is probably best, then, that Ryen decided enough was enough and corners the man, kisses the man, and then asks the man out. And despite the fact that Kason can’t see how anyone could see past his wheelchair, and despite the fact that Ryen is still reeling from his brother’s death, these two find themselves exactly where they always wanted to be: home.
I have a bit of a weak spot for MCs who have to deal with disabilities. I like how they have to overcome and get used to a body that has let them down in some way. So when I went looking for a nice short to fill some of my time, this one jumped out at me.
Despite some of the implausibility about how the book ended with Kason’s ex, I found I really enjoyed this. The two guys here are cute together and I liked how Ryen was so not troubled by Kason’s issues. He just barreled thru all of Kason’s excuses and made the man see just how perfect they were together. And when Kason returned the favor, Ryen was smart enough to not just run off into the hills on some absurd notion of ‘protecting’ Kason from Ryen’s own issues.
I do wish that Blake hadn’t come across so two-dimensional. Yeah he is clearly a bit of a jerk, but the way he unraveled, and how quickly it happened seemed a bit too far-fetched. I’m not saying that there aren’t some truly horrible people out there, but I think his sleaze-baggyness could have been tempered with a bit of reality. Instead of an asshole who made some stupid decisions, Blake becomes a text-book villain. No reason or rhyme to why he is being all evil, other than to push the story into its climax.
Still, it was an enjoyable story, and I had fun reading it. It did a good job of working with the plot so the story didn’t drag on, but also it didn’t feel like we got shortchanged. The time jumps were handled very well, and I appreciate that. So other than my Blake issues, I liked this story quite a bit. If you have a bit of spare time you might want to check it out.

Kason was on the way to help a friend when his life was changed forever by a drunk driver, living life in a wheelchair and losing his lover has knocked his confidence and he feels invisible, but Ryen sees Kason as a man he could love. Ryen knows all about life changing instances, and just because Kason is in a wheelchair doesn’t mean he should be alone and Ryen wants to be the man to show Kason what they could have. When Kason’s ex Blake shows up Ryen won’t allow him to mess with his happiness.
This is a very sweet story about two men who have both suffered loss and heartache and together they begin to live their lives to the fullest. Kason has been through a lot in the eighteen months since his life was changed, and when it comes to meeting a new man he has lost all confidence believing that no man would want him now he is in a wheelchair. When Ryen sees Kason hanging around his coffee shop he wants to know the man better, and it is better than his wildest dreams when they embark on a relationship, together they begin to move on with their lives and the only bump in the road is Blake.
I really enjoyed this story and the wonderful characters of Kason and Ryen, these two men who have both suffered in the past make a great couple as they move forward with their lives. Each man being able to understand what the other has gone through, being a comfort to each other but much more than that, they fall in love with the person inside. Blake is a character that is a very nasty individual, when Kason couldn’t be the man he used to be he walked away, but seeing him in a couple of brief scenes and you are glad he did because the way he treats Kason sends shudders down your spine.
A really sweet love story that isn’t too overpowering or over the top, we see aspects of Kason and Ryen relationship as it develops and they get to know each other, we see them fall in love and see how they respect each other and also how they protect each other. The supporting characters are really well written and I am glad that we briefly met both Kason’s and Ryen’s extended family because they do add a lot to the emotional side of the story. There are a couple of brief sex scenes between Ryen and Kason which are really hot and show’s us just how suited these two men are.
I will recommend this to those who love men who rise from the ashes of tragedy, who find true love that makes them better men, who have hot sex and plan on living happily ever after.

The incentive to read this book came from the simple mention of disability from the blurb. Extra difficulty tends to make already hard situations more complicated, and if I love anything it’s complicated.
Kason came in daily to a certain coffee shop to write. Although in a wheelchair, Kason still had eyes and it wasn’t difficult to notice the owner of the shop, Ryan. But Kason is terribly insecure and shy, the result of his relationship with Blake, the ex. The insensitive man left Kason after the accident that took his ability to walk and was anything but considerate about it.
The romance between Kason and Ryan flares up instantly and almost before you can blink they are the image of perfect. Their families are good together and their plans for the future are just flourishing. The only smudge in the whole story is Blake.
I’ll start off by saying this book was just too far from what I consider my preference. I was attracted to the subject, a veteran and a man in a wheelchair who need to overcome their difficulties to be together and make their relationship work. Yeah, there were no difficulties. Kason, while in a wheelchair, had very few issues for someone who started off as insecure and in the past year and a half had to adjust to a whole new life. Ryan’s issues were only mentioned and the rest was all rainbows. I disliked the fact that certain scenes were glossed over and the whole book was rather rushed. It reminded me more of a shifter story with inevitable quick bonding than a contemporary where feelings are usually better worked through and the reader eased into the romance so he/she actually cares for the characters before the happy ending without the incredulity factor.
I did like the subject but the resolution of the story and the overall flow just weren’t for me. I would suggest this story to people who like it tooth aching sweet while I’ll check out the fantasy story with hope it will be more to my liking.
This is a VERY sweet romance about Kason, who is in a wheelchair after being involved a car accident with a drunk driver. His boyfriend, at the time, Blake, left him because he didn't want to be with someone who was incapacitated. It's also about Ryen, who works and runs a coffee shop. Kason likes Ryen, goes to the coffee shop just to look at him and talk to him, when he can. He would like to go out on a date with Ryen but being in a wheelchair holds him back. Thankfully Kasen doesn't wait and they have their first date.
It progresses from there fairly quickly into love. It's not a problem, they're both so nice you are happy for them. Both guys look out for their sister/sister-in-law, Kasons's sister's (Lexi) husband is on a tour of duty, and Kason is a great brother and uncle to her children. Ryen's brother was killed on a tour of duty and he looks out for his siter-in-law and her children. So they are truly decent guys. The sister/sister-in-law are nice characters, no shrews amongst the women in the book.
Blake, Kason's nasty ex comes back on the scene towards the end, but all is resolved quickly. There is a nice epilogue, and I felt happy they found each other.
I would have given this book 4 stars but it was a book of extemes - the MC's were lovey but lacked real depth and layering. The antagonist was just too, too much. I know people can be nasty, but he was overkill in his behaviour, and things happened a little to expediently for my tastes on a number of ocassions.
All in all it is a lovely romance, very light on sex, more fade off the page than hot. It has very sweet characters, and a nice ending. If you are looking for something to pick you up, something light and easy to read The Broken Road could be just what you're looking for.
It feels like The Broken Road had too much going on for a short story, and none of the subplots felt fully formed or complete. With each of the characters surprising each other with the perfect “date” activity, and the family gathering that felt like the two groups had been friends for years, it felt like a case of too much of a good thing.
Both Ryen and Kason were likeable guys, even if their names were a bit ridiculous, and their relationship progressed very quickly (light speed is the term that came to mind). Yet Kason’s new outlook and set of priorities makes perfect sense to me and felt real to me, as any major medical scare will have a significant impact on one’s view of life. However, Blake’s behavior and threats? Really? The premise that the one who dumped Kason would care about him a year later, and escalate harassing behavior felt outlandish.
I did like how the story began with a quick narrative to bring us up to speed and noticed that there was some “tell” to advance the story, which happened to work well, but at other times, the tell could have been show. I also felt the dialogue was a bit hokey, smooth and well written, but still hokey.
It’s always so hard for me to review novellas and short stories. When I read them I’m always left wanting more while appreciating how quickly we get to the good stuff! This story is no exception.
I absolutely love the theme – wheelchair bound Kason, down on his luck ‘stalking’ a new love interest, Ryen and having that love interest ‘catch’ him in his stalking and reciprocating his feelings. They are so great for each other – helping each other with emotional and physical scars that have plagued them the last few years. Ryen shows Kason that there really is no limit on the things he can still do physically (a couple of aw moments for sure) while Kason helps Ryen get through the emotional turmoil of the memories haunting him from his time of service. I would absolutely have loved a full length novel to fully develop their love story.
Kason’s sister was just awesome! It’s great that Kason has her in his corner to support and uplift him in his time of need. I really liked the kids in the story (all of them) – what a great way to connect Ryen and Kason. Blake was obviously dealing with a lot of guilt and handling it poorly. I did think his last minute effort to hurt Kason was a bit much.
This quick taste of Anna’s work definitely has me wanting to read more!
The story is romantic and sweet, but nothing special. I couldn't connect with Kason and his wheelchair. It wasn't realistic enough, at least for me. But his story with Ryen is sweet nonetheless, even if everything happens a bit to fast. We even have a HEA at the end, so in overall this is a fine sweet novella.
Kasen is wheelchair bound and he never expects someone to every see him as just a person anymore. Ryan is getting over his own loss but he is such a special guy. I love how its not about the able guy being the caretaker but about the two men really forming a partnership where they share the responsibility of caring for each other.
A sweet short story. There was enough character development and the story was intriguing enough the author could have made this a full length novel. I will definitely be looking for more written by Anna Lee.
