Killer Getaway

Rate this book

With a storm brewing in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, the Killer WASPs head south to Palm Beach, Florida. And what could be better than fabulous friends, Lilly Pulitzer beachwear, frozen cocktails, and high-society drama?

Kristin Clark and her basset hound, Waffles, are ready to escape the doldrums of winter to bask in the warm Florida sun and dine at her friends' new restaurant, Vicino. But when a rival restaurant undergoes an HGTV makeover and attempts to steal Vicino's spotlight and its patrons, the town is abuzz with gossip, and Kristin and her friends—Bootsie, a nosy reporter; Holly, a chicken nugget heiress; and Sophie, the soon-to-be ex-wife of a mobster—have parties to attend.

Everything is going swimmingly in the glitz and glamour of Palm Beach until a bad batch of clams threatens to shut down Vicino and their vacation for good. When it becomes clear that the clams may be more than an innocent mishap, the ladies must unravel the mystery before there are deadly consequences.

Perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series!

Escaping the wintry weather and an empty store, a little group of friends heads down to south Florida, taking the dog. They've got a fancy house and intend to make merry. And they do - food, drink, shop, designer goods. One of them is divorcing and another wryly comments that with the hourly cost of legal fees it would be wiser not to fight over the cashmere socks. A friend's restaurant is being renovated, expensively, but otherwise the main cause for concern is that a car nearly runs two of the ladies over in the street - could be an accident even if the driver didn't stop.

However matters escalate with a plate of bad clams and a sabotaged air conditioning unit. Something is certainly amiss and the crew decide to investigate. Before too long they're even obliged to do the prep and serving in the restaurant.

Every few paragraphs we find more food, drink or designer clothing; brand names are continually splashed around for everything from underwear to indigestion remedy to jewellery and handbags. All this makes it hard to get to know the ladies and men on any but a superficial level. I gather there was a previous escapade which set up some of the relationships and if you've read that one you may enjoy this book more. The sentences filled with capitalised words came across as off-putting to me, stopping me getting into the action, but if you obsessively collect brand names you'll be fine. This read is certainly lively.

This is the second in the Killer WASPS crime series, but you don't need to have read that to enjoy this one.

I really enjoyed being in the company of Kristin and her quirky friends again, and this time she's very luckily been whisked away to stay in heiress Holly's rented villa in South Florida. Once again, there is a mystery or two to be solved while she's there.

Someone tries to run down Holly and Jessica, the manager of the new and trendy Vicino's restaurant, where it appears that someone also wants the restaurant out of business by trying to poison one of the areas's most influential diners and sabotage the air-conditioning.

Luckily, Jessica's friends Kirsty and Bootsie, in between eating, drinking and shopping decide to do a little sleuthing.

There were shady dealings, double dealings, lots of Gucci, Hermes, Valentino being worn, together with lies and deceit all neatly wrapped up in this mystery which I loved!

Kristin Clark just might be Miss Marple for the 21st Century! I really love this series and HOPE there's another one in the works. Maybe Kristin and her gang of "WASPs" can come to California (I'm biased, of course, because that's where I live)? I gave the first book, Killer WASPs, four stars solely because of some continuity and grammatical issues, which were non-existant in Killer Getaway. The story and characters are well-crafted, entertaining, and engaging. The way Ms. Korman puts it all together is quite masterful, leaving one to root for Kristin (and Waffles, OF COURSE!) and boo and hiss the bad guys. I also think it a wonderful dichotomy that Kristin is middle-class surrounded by and close with those in the upper class, adding further dimension to the already complex mysteries going on around her.

The wild and crazy crew from Killer Wasps is back again with a light-hearted mystery. Winter in Bryn Mawr, a posh suburb of Philadelphia, gets too cold for Kirstin Clark, so she heads to the Gold Coast of Florida for a getaway. Her nosy friend Bootsie tags along as well, because the Lily Pulitzer-worshiping reporter doesn’t want to miss out on all the fun in the sun. The ladies rendezvous with their northern friends who are fortunate (and wealthy) enough to spend winters in the Florida WASP enclave of Palm Coast. Their friend Channing has opened Vicino, the newest hot spot for beautiful people to dine and be seen. Unfortunately, rest and relaxation is not on the menu.

Killer Getaway is the first book I've read by Amy Korman. It is the second book in her Killer Wasps Mystery series. This book features Kristin Clark and her dog Waffles as they leave the cold of winter in Pennsylvania to spend some time in Florida. Most of their time is spent at Vicino, a restaurant recently opened in Magnolia Beach by their friends. Their relaxing time is shattered, however, when someone begins to steal Vicino's business by serving bad clams and ruining the air conditioner. Kristin and her friends have a mystery to solve! The characters in this book are fun to like and I look forward to getting to know them better in future books!

A Winter Wonderland

A really good read which grabbed my interest immediately and held it until the end. Of course, some of this is because I lived in Chester County, Pa for over 30 years and now live in Delray Beach, which somehow makes the story more real. A lively, quirky cast of characters, an interesting plot and subplots, a touch of romance made this a great way to spend an afternoon.

This is my second experience reading Amy Korman's "Killer Wasp" novels and it probably will be my last. I have nothing against light fiction, and I like "quirky" stories and characters, but the second book was so similar to the first that a third would be unimaginable.

Generally, I really enjoy series fiction. Once I am introduced to a character I like to see them in different situations and bring them into the "life" of my imagination over and over again. Not necessarily so in this case. I get a kick out of the "cocktail and shopping crowd" and the glamorous friends our less glamorous protagonist runs with, but I need a wee bit more than wardrobe and cocktail descriptions to keep me entertained.

And, make no mistake about it, Ms. Korman intends to entertain. She makes no pretense of writing the Great American Novel so it would be mean-spirited to judge the book in any context other than its own. If she hopes to have a long and lucrative career writing Killer Wasp stories, I would encourage her to let her imagination stretch a wee bit more than just moving her characters from pretty houses and bars in Bryn Mar to more glamorous ones in South Florida.

4 out of 5 stars Kindle Copy for Review

Kristen Clark finds herself in Palm Beach, Florida with her rich friends leaving the cold Pennsylvania weather despite not wanting to go. How can she say no to bikinis, frozen cocktails and high society drama among her friends?

While in sunny Palm Beach, they find themselves eating at her friend’s new restaurant Vicino where a bout of spoiled clams cause a case of food poisoning to a food reviewer the night before the grand opening. The spoiled clams might shut down the restaurant before it even opens and the girls vacation.

Thrown in a HGTV makeover of a local rival restaurant into the mix where personalities clash. It appears there is more than meets the eye as Kristen and her friends themselves involved in the mystery before someone really gets hurt.

A cast of diverse characters that blends together making for an amusing read.

A cross between chick lit and mystery, this book was a perfect sequel to Killer WASPs. Kristin is innocently heading down to Florida to stay with friends to escape the January in Pittsburgh, when of course she finds herself wrapped up in a mystery with most of the characters from Pittsburgh transplanted to Florida.

I loved seeing all of the characters again, but I sort of wish there had been some new ones added into the mix. It felt a little too planned to have ALL the characters relocate down to Florida and have a second mystery unfold. Although, I did love seeing these characters again, so maybe just a few new ones would have helped.

This mystery invites you to relax near Palm Beach with vacationing Main Line antiques dealer Kristin Clark and her friends from the book Killer Wasps. Bassett hound lovers will appreciate Kristin's "too fat for Florida" pet Waffles. Even if you have not read the first book in this series, Killer Getaway is the perfect antidote to winter doldrums. Grab a cocktail and enjoy!

I didn't know this wasn't the first book in the series- that's OK you can still follow.
Not sure if I'll read the others. The overindulgence and spend, spend, spend with the slaps towards Old Navy & Target. Sorry, we all can't afford $4,700 Hermes scarves.

Cute

I didn't like this book as much as the first entry, Killer Wasps, but it was cute. I wouldn't go any further with the series.
