Revenants #3.5

Die Once More

Rate this book
This one-hundred-page novella picks up where the international bestselling Die for Me trilogy ended and follows the eternally irresistible Jules Marchenoir as he leaves Paris behind for a fresh start in New York City.

Jules is a revenant—an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save human lives. He's spent the last century flirting his way through Paris and, most recently, falling in love with his best friend's girlfriend. Loyalty and heartbreak have led him to choose a new life in NYC.

Separated from his friends and his home, Jules is adrift in this dangerous new world, facing unknown enemies . . . until he meets a revenant named Ava. Though the battle for France has been won, an epic war between good and evil has just begun in the Big Apple, and Ava needs Jules's help to uncover the key to an American victory. Jules finds himself in the same position he crossed an ocean to escape: at risk of losing his immortal existence as well as his heart.

Amy Plum is the international bestselling author of the DIE FOR ME series (Indie Next List pick, Romance Times top pick, and recipient of a starred review from School Library Journal). The books have been translated into thirteen foreign languages. The trilogy is accompanied by three novellas entitled DIE FOR HER, DIE ONCE MORE, TO DIE FOR and a compendium entitled INSIDE THE WORLD OF DIE FOR ME.

In DREAMFALL and NEVERWAKE a radical experiment to cure chronic insomnia goes wrong, and its seven teenage test subjects are plunged into a shared coma populated by one another’s nightmares; those who die in the dream will also die in real life.

Amy's action/adventure/magic duology, AFTER THE END and UNTIL THE BEGINNING, received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, 4 1/2 stars from RT Book Reviews, and enthusiastic reviews from Kirkus, USA Today, ALA Booklist and School Library Journal.

After being raised in Birmingham, Alabama, in a rather restrictive environment, AMY PLUM escaped to Chicago to an even more restrictive environment at a university that expelled people for dancing. (And where she was called to the dean’s office for “wearing too much black”.) After all of that restrictiveness, she was forced to run far far away, specifically to Paris, France, where she only wore black and danced all she wanted.

After five years in Paris, she ventured to London, where she got an M.A. in Medieval Art History, specializing in Early Sienese Painting (1260-1348) mainly because it promised almost no hope of finding a paying job afterward.

Amy managed to find work in the world of art and antiques in New York. But after almost a decade of high-pressure lifestyle in the Big Apple, she swapped her American city for a French village of 1300 inhabitants.

After signing with HarperCollins for the DIE FOR ME series, Amy left her job as an English professor at Tours University to write full-time. She now lives in Paris with her two kids and her black lab, Oberon.

She is a huge fan of Edward Gorey and Maira Kalman (and collects both of their books/art), as well as David Sedaris, Amadeo Modigliani, and Ira Glass.

I don't know why Amy Plum hates Jules so much that she's given two novellas to Jules but his character seems so boring in these compared to the main books of the series. Both novellas talk about how he is in love with Kate but she will never love him back and all.

I already know that so I didn't want/need a novella telling me those things again and again. Also, Jules gets his happy ending in this. The entire series he's been in love with Kate but after pining for Kate in most of the novella, he loses his heart to Ava. I am happy for him and all but his character deserved a better novella IMO.

I wanted to love it but I just couldn't.

Jules, buddy, I love you and all that, but did you really just spend 53 out of 100 pages pining for Kate after you already admitted to us and the rest of the world that she'll never return those feelings?

Really? You're not a hormonal teenage girl.

Not to mention I didn't care for your new love interest anyways. And it went WAAAYYYY too fast.

I really enjoyed this. We all wanted Jules to find happiness somewhere after his heart broke and I'm really happy Amy Plum gave us, the readers, a chance to see a glimpse of his life after the events that happened in the last book of the series.

And now, I wish for more novellas concerning all of the characters. I think it would be really appreciated from all the readers who enjoyed the series.

A happy ending for Jules!

4 stars

I have mad love for the Revenants series, and am so happy that Amy Plum has given us this novella which finishes off the one remaining loose thread from the series - a happy ending for Jules.

Jules' story is very closely tied in to the events of the earlier books, so this one definitely cannot be read as a standalone. This is a unique and well-developed paranormal / supernatural world that is not easily explained, so I’m not going to go into details, but this is one of my favourite YA PNR series, and I highly recommend giving them a try, starting with Die for Me (my review).

I won’t give any spoilers for the earlier books, but this novella gives us the opportunity to see Jules moving on after the events of the series. He definitely has a hard time of it, and a lot of this novella takes place with him monologuing , but I enjoyed watching him work through it all. And though I would have liked to see more of the development of his love story, he gets his happy ending, and that’s what I wanted for him.

We also get a chance to catch up with the entire Revenant crew from Paris, and I loved the continuation and progression of multiple storylines for that little group. They are such a fantastic group of characters, and though I was thrilled with how the series finished off, if Amy Plum decides to give us any additional stories set in this world, I would be all over them.

This is a must-read for fans of the series.

Die Once More is #3.5 in the YA paranormal Revenants series. It is an e-novella and must be read after books 1,2 and 3.

There will be some spoilers from book 3.

This novella is set after book three in the series. The narrator is Jules. Even though the Revenants was a YA series this story has a bit of a different feel to it, since Jules is older. Although it's still totally appropriate for a YA audience.

I loved Jules in the Revenants series (he was my favorite character). So I was happy that he got his own story. I am not sure why it took me so long to read this (I read book 3 almost 3 years ago).

I did enjoy this story. Although I wonder if I would have liked it more if I had read it sooner. It was definitely nice to get see Jules again.

We get to see a lot of our favorite characters: Kate, Vincent, Charlotte, Jeanne, Ambrose... And we got to see some Revenant behavior (going out on Numa hunts, having the volants talk in their heads...). But the story was so short.

After the battle in book 3 Jules moved to NYC to get away from Kate and Vincent (Jules loved Kate too).

It was definitely nice to see so many characters from the series in this novella. And the story was much better once it was no longer set in NYC. But there was some romance in this book. And it was just too quick for me. But I enjoyed getting Jules' POV.

I enjoyed this one, better than the other novella in fact I wished I'd read this one first. I loved Jules, and glad he found love in Ava after all the pining he did for Kate knowing full well that her heart was only for Vincent. Amy Plum answered some questions that were left unanswered, in this book about the other characters in the series. Definitely worth the read

Not: Hep mutlu ol Jules Marchenoir, benim Şampiyon’um sensin💕

A beautiful and wonderful ending to a series and left me wanting so much more.

Jules Marchenoir has fled from Paris to New York. Not because Numa are chasing him, but because he’s in dire need of a new start. He had spent the last century saving human lives and flirting with women thinking love was not in the cards for him. Until he met Kate, the same girl his best friend fell in love with. The same girl that fell for his best friend.

Heartbroken and separated from the place he called home and his bardia companions who he considered family, he must confront new customs and big group of kindred. Most are welcoming but Ava is able to freeze the entire city when she turns her attention his way. Can Jules protect his heart from getting freeze burn?

Even though Die Once More picks up right where If I should die left off, when France Champion triumphed over their immortal enemy and Jules left right after, I felt like I had to wait forever to read about him finally finding his happy forever after. In his case the forever being almost literal.

He’s hiding his love-sickness and dejected soul behind unending work well, but a wedding in Paris forces him to serve as liaison between Ava and the bardia in France. Though this trip back home is unwanted, it pushes him to face his feelings, spend time with beloved friends and even open to the possibility of love of his own.
“The give-and-take feeds me. Every tidbit she offers is like honey . . . a piece of herself. Especially from this woman who gives nothing away.”

I just loved reading about him through his own point of view. I felt for him through his sadness for all he lost when he left, but also rejoiced to see the old charming, magnetic Jules I met a while ago. I also like to get to know Ava through him. He’s such a special guy, he deserved an equally exceptional woman.
“There’s this girl.”
“Girl?”
“Woman, rather, who I’m just getting to know. Who I would like to know better.”

Ava is self-sufficient and magnetic. She’s a natural charismatic leader. But she’s also had a sad and tragic past. Even though she initially misjudged Jules, she’s smart and observant, able to reevaluate her misconception and even start a friendship with him and perhaps more.
“She begins to look at me with new eyes, grateful for my help. I am earning her respect and am surprised by how gratifying that is to me.”

His unrequited love for Kate not only broke his heart, it broke mine as well so this novella is incredible welcome, but my broken heart wanted so much more.

Having the old gang back was wonderful. The plotline for this novella is just as exciting as it is for the rest to the books in this series. I truly fell in love with this series, this world and the characters and don’t think I could possibly get enough of them.

This is novella 3.5 in the series and should be read in order. It’s told from Jules’ points of view and ends with a lovely happy ending.

Amy Plum's Revenant series is one of my absolute favorite YA paranormal series. I was sad to see the series end in 2013, but really liked how it ended. This a novella gives Jules, one of my favorite side characters, a chance at a happy ending.

Jules is not at a good place when the story begins. He is hopelessly in love with his best friend's girl. Since he's basically immortal, ageless, and interacts with a limited social group, he can't see how he will ever get over his love for Kate. So he runs away.

The book was set in New York - Brooklyn to be specific. For the most part, the setting wasn't that important. Actually none of the plot was important or well-developed. Basically there was lots of numa activity in New York and the New York revenants needed help. I think Amy made a good choice by placing that in the background of the story, since readers won't really care. The only thing that matters is Jules.

Jules isn't as funny in this story than in the previous books. This is starts off because he's depressed. Later it develops that he is trying to be sincere rather than charming. I liked Jules best when he was happy and funny, but not in the prince charming front he liked to put on. Being told through Jules's voice allowed him to come off as a more genuine person.

Of course there's the love interest, Ava. It's one of the hate turns to love stories, which at least is better than insta-love. I really liked her. She was a natural leader, hard-edged, intelligent, and charismatic. It feels like their relationship turns from hate to like pretty quickly, but I think the way it's done made sense.

Best of all, we do get to go back to Paris and see the old gang. Kate, Vincent, Gaspard, Charlotte, and everyone else make an appearance. I wish we could have gotten a full book rather than a novella, but this is a great way to cap off the Revenants' stories. The greatest compliment I can give this novella is that it makes me want to go back and re-read the series, especially Die For Me, the first book, which was my favorite.

Recommendation: Borrow. Or buy since it's only $1.99.

For people like me who loved the Revenants series and loved Vincent and Kate's ending, but didn't get the closure they wanted with Jules, this is the novella for you. Picking up right where the trilogy ended, Jules is a bit of a mess, happy for the victory in Paris, but heartbroken that his love for Kate will never be returned. So New York City is the place he chooses for a fresh start, or at least a place to hide his feelings and hide from his friends. We see his hurt and his emotions as he delves into this world of lost love that he has never experienced before.

Then his journey takes a turn he wasn't planning on, forcing him back to Paris, facing his past. But this is where things get good, because this unexpected detour allows him to deal with his old feelings, cherish his old friends, and find himself in the position to love again. I loved seeing Jules cope with his heart and open himself up to future possibilities. I loved seeing him go from moody Jules back to the charismatic guy he was. I also liked Ava and the different emotions, history, and hope she brought to the table. I liked that this wasn't an insta-love, because that would have just been silly considering where Jules (and Ava) were coming from. I really enjoyed Jules and Ava together and what they brought out of each other. Plus there is an exciting revenant plotline that pulls us back into the exciting world they live in.

Overall, I really enjoyed Die Once More. I felt like I got a happy ending for Jules, plus there were some happy times for other characters in the story as well (and I love happy characters in love). Would I have liked this to be longer? Of course. I would have loved even more to Jules and Ava's story, especially since it took a while to take off. But I'm still really happy I read this and would recommend this to fans of Jules or those who just want more Revenant world.

This novella is completely unnecessary and boring. Nothing really happens, absolutely nothing!
For most of the novella Jules is utterly heartbroken and at the same time enchanted by Miss "Frosty" aka Ava, who of course is super perfect, bad ass and beautiful. And her reason for disliking him were stupid and childish, she is a woman and no teenager anymore, she should get over it and move on and should stop being a dick to strangers. I just found her annoying and prejudiced. Jules could do better than her.
Additionally there is no action and no romance at all in this novella. It is only described that people are falling in love or are in love, but no emotions were actually shown. I am hugely disappointed. :( It feels like a wasted my time and money for this.

I've never really understood Jules' appeal - he was, to me, a minor character in this series - but I was excited that he was finally getting his own happy ending. Unfortunately Die Once More is disappointing in that regard. His new romance would have been much more believable and heartfelt had he not been moooning over Kate for more than half of what it is already a short novella. I think it would have been better had it been set months into the future, as opposed to the day after the events of the third book, and if his heart was already healed. As it stands there was too little development between him and Ava. Cute story, but forgettable.

Awww i'm so glad Jules got is HEA. I'm a 100% Kate & Vincent shipper but i always had a soft spot for Jules and i was devastated he was so heartbroken at the end of "If i should die". Reading this novella where he finally found happiness and having the chance to get back into the revenants world was a wonderful treat but left me wanting more! Please Amy keep writing more novellas!

DIE ONCE MORE (The Revenants #3.5)

• ⭐:5,0/5

💬: What a delight to read something with Jules’s point of view again! This novella focus on his new life in New York, after he says farewell to his friends and the person he loves but it’s forbidden, in Paris. I adored knowing how he is regarding everything he went through, while also getting a glimpse of his future.
Ava was such an amazing add to the story, I really wanted someone like her in the story: fearsome and gorgeous. Someone with the emotional to handle Jules comments and sweetness, someone that is her own person already and just needs to battle some old scars. I love that they both found happy endings with each other!

It's been a couple of years since I finished reading this series and I thought I said goodbye to the revenants for good. This is one of my favorite series ever so when I saw Die Once More on Goodreads, I immediately dived in! Even if it's just a novella in Jules' POV, I still loved it. The Paris revenants were also there, so we're given a glimpse of how they were after the events of If I Should Die. Actually, I was a bit worried that I would find it hard to reconnect with the characters because I don't remember everything that's happened in the third book. Good thing that this novella is set in a different place and has a different story from the trilogy. Jules also provided recaps and flashbacks.

Ava is a feisty character, but I don't like her that much. She didn't really know Jules, but she was already prejudiced against him and treated him unfairly. Judgmental much?

But that revelation about Ava really surprised me. I didn't think Way to drop that bomb, Amy Plum!

The romance was kinda rushed, though, especially considering that they're immortals so they could have taken their time before getting together. But since this is only a novella and not a full-length novel, I understand the need to compress the story into only a hundred pages.

But that roof scene totally blew me! It was swoony and romantic and just so darn sweet. I was actually grinning like crazy while reading that part. And that last paragraph! It made my freaking feels explode!

Die Once More is a really awesome treat not just for Jules' fans but for the fans of the Revenants series as well. And really, this is a well-deserved happy ending for Jules. ^__^

July 2015:

I was so excited for this, and I'm so happy with it - except its too DAMN SHORT

Jules is my baby, and its so sad to see how he's pining after Kate. I like how he's intrigued by Ava, but it's not instalove. I like how the Americans say how they died when they introduce themselves - it's like how they say, oh I'm from Boston and then clarify it with Massachusetts. (like, we know)
Also like how she made the heroes of 9/11 into bardia. And then I had an inkling Ava would be the American champion, but I want to find out more about her! And I like how Kate talks to Jules straight off about his feelings. If it were me, I couldn't do it. so kudos to her. and I like how Jules slowly recovers, gets to know Ava, and then they kiss! And the story's over. like, I want more detail please.

also I like how Gaspard is so into the wedding (also something fab) and its helping him with his grief over Jean-Baptiste. I'd love one of these novellas for every Parisian revenant please, and then some for reventants in other cities. And then, it could be turned into a proper book with short stories! pretty please?

REREAD: March 2016

*sighing because I love this follow up book*

To be honest, this is a really cute little book with my favourite characters that resolves everything happily. A lovely little story.

It's a bit different from the first novella and I don't know how to feel about that. In the beginning, it sounded like Jules, his perky, sad self, consumed by his life for Kate. But as it progressed, the tone changed—which I'm glad for, truly, because I hate reading about him bunt so sad—but it didn't feel like him.
It was a pretty good novel, if a bit underwhelming and mushy towards the end, but it was nice reading about old characters again.
Jules—the sad one—is still my favourite and my heart breaks for him. As much as I love him being happy, there's something about him when he was a tortured soul.

WHAT? WHY DIDN'T I HEAR ABOUT THIS EARLIER?

I started reading this book and set it down, because I didn't want to leave this world. I love this world and I love Jules. If I had to pick a book boyfriend out of all of the books I have ever read it would be him. The way he loves Kate in this series, the way he knows he shouldn't but can't help but worship the ground she walks on and obsesses over her. I adore this world, the characters and the writing style. At one point I found myself shaking because of the writing, and how it was breaking my heart. Love this book. I WANT MORE BOOKS AND MORE JULES!!!!

Oh man oh man OH WHY. I love Jules. He was my favorite character in these series. I did NOT want Kates to end up with Vincent, I thought Jules was much better but regardless of all that I can't bring myself to read this as seeing Jules fall for someone else will destroy me. Of course I was heartbroken when he left to NY right after the battle and of course it majorly sucked that he didn't get his happily ever after and I understand this novella is about that but still!!! I can't read it, I just can't. Love you my Jules but .. no ):

What I like next to the story and places in Revenants Series is the covers and the colors in them :)

Now Talking about Die Once More it is as I heard a chance from Amy Plum to Jules fans to give him a love *so fandomy eh?* and the thing is it is too shallow actually and unlike other books in the series ,but because it is like somethings requested or expected, still it is something accepted as long as it has a Die word in the title :D

About time Jules got some sunshine. I liked Jules a lot, even though I am a KatexVince shipper. I loved Ava, and I was glad to read about the wedding and about Jules and what he had to go through to heal his heart. I'm also glad Kate and Jules mended their friendship- which while not broken, had been hurt by his confession- I wish there had been a bit more Vince, and leave it to Jules to fall for the more badass in New York.

Yay! A good and happy ending for Jules. So glad he got to find someone worthy of him. Ava is pretty amazing. She is so fierce, sassy and strong. I admire her so much. I love this one particularly, because we get an insight of what happens after. Charlotte and Ambrose are probably my favorite couple. And this book just got me fangirling! This had so many sweet and cute moments between them and their wedding...Love this so much.

I have been obsessed with the Die for Me series. This was a purely selfish (non reviewing on my blog) read for me. This novella was all about Jules. I'm so glad Jules got his moment. He is a great character with so much charisma and my heart just broke for him in the last book. The added closure this novella gave was so good for my soul. :)

There is some swearing in this book.

All in all I liked Ava and it is always a pleasure to read Jules.
Now, now...I need another book..I need to read about a certain wedding proposal and a certain wedding...aaaand also I'd like to read more about Kate acting in her newfound role.
Damn...I need another book...the longer, the better!!
