Preternatural Affairs #3

Hotter Than Helltown

Rate this book
A killer is mutilating bodies in Los Angeles. Agent Cèsar Hawke is on the case, but the murderer is ahead of him--way ahead of him.

Wiping the memories of the dead so that the team's necrocognitive can't talk to them? Done. Preventing magical reconstruction of the crime scenes? Oh yeah. And the murders keep getting more brutal while Cèsar struggles to catch up.

The best way to heat up a cold case is to go to Helltown, where Los Angeles's most powerful evil hides out, but even those demons are afraid of the murderer. Their fear adds one more question to the growing pile of unknowns:

What kind of bad guy is too hot for Helltown?

Urban fantasy is my favorite gene, and this author got it right for my taste. There is evil, death, darkness, an evil city presence and several kick-arse powerful people to fight for justice. Witches with unique powers, they are not the bippty bop, easy wave your wand type. They specialize, they study, they tie themselves to other for strength. The main character has a job, bills, stress, and doubts, he's lusty but is not controlled by his hormones. The supporting characters all had such diverse personalities it really added to the interest level of the story, any of them could carry their own book. Horror, humor, action, mystery and complete world building.

Agent Cesar Hawke, a witch PI and training member of The Office of Preternatural Affairs is about to have his limits tested. Something has been mutating bodies in a very disturbing pattern. The case has him joining up with, his partner Suzy a tough no nonsense witch, Isobel, a sexy necrognitive witch, and his billionaire boss Fritz. Suzy and Cesar cross the city following bodies and leads while Isobel raises the dead spirits to reenact their deaths. Nothing makes sense, there seems to be no connection until they start to notice an odd connection that may lead to somebody in their circle becoming a target on a nearly unstoppable power. Helltown, a city filled with demons is not a place you want to go to at anytime and never after dark but this team may be forced into facing the horrors.

I needed the book wanting more, always a good sign. I want to hear more about these characters. I plan of reading the earlier books in this series very soon.

This is a 4.5 star read.

Ooooh ..... I just luuurve this series! And how can I not? It combines two of my favourite genres - urban fantasy and crime mystery. With an array of eclectic characters, sassy snarkiness and a horrifying Helltown where all things nasty generally originate, this is a highly entertaining, quick read.

Okay let me say this. So far as fast moving action packed UF story goes this one (in the series) is a 4star read. That said there is a problem that annoys me to some extent and I plan to comment on it.

As far as plot and characters go they are still here and "most" of the people who greatly enjoyed the first 2 in the series will more than likely enjoy these. Ms. Reine is a good writer and the books are ones than can really draw in readers.

So for an enjoyable read I can recommend this one just as do the first 2,

Now the caveat. If you are a Christian believer go into this knowing that a picture of God is painted that is false and bothersome...even hurtful. But if like me and I'm sure others you expect this in some books today you can probably let it run off your back. I suppose it's a compliment in some ways that people think/feel they can insult Christians and treat our beliefs as myth without fear when they'd never do that with other religions. Still it didn't hurt my belief. My only real concern is that it might color the perceptions of others and give a false picture of God that some might accept.

Anyway be aware going in and don't let it upset. The story itself is, as I said well written.

This has been my favorite of the Preternatural Affairs series so far. I feel like Cesar's character has continued to grow. I don't like series where the characters stay the same. I want to see maturity, new insights, and root for them. S.M. Reine has done all those things in this 3rd book.

Cesar's voice continues to be snarky and I still love his reactions to the crazy demon/witch/werewolfy world he interacts with, but he's growing up. He is starting to have more confidence and readers get a peak at what may be coming in the series.

I thought the plot held a fresh idea and played out really well. There is a lot to learn about the rest of the characters too. I have a feeling that this is a fun series to keep coming back to.

Thank you Netgalley and Red Iris Books for a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was such a fun read! It is definitely the most enjoyable instalment in this series so far! Great plot, lots of action, plenty of humour and great characters. There is little not to love about Hotter Than Helltown.

Cèsar is really growing on me. I’ve always liked him and thought he was great as a narrative voice but this instalment takes his character to a whole new level. He is such a fantastic anti-hero. He has little self-confidence and doesn’t think much of himself. He is well-aware of his flaws (or what he thinks are his flaws anyway) and can be pretty self-deprecating at times. Most people around him treat him like a useless low-level witch… He can’t stand the sight of blood, is pretty much allergic to magic… Still, he makes quite the kick-butt character when he gets himself into it and he is getting more confident towards the second part of the book (with a little help from Suzy). And he has a great sense of humour which makes his character even more likeable.

As the previous instalments, I love the interaction between the characters. We see more of Fritz and I like the friendship that is building up between him and Cèsar. Isobel keeps making short appearances and the attraction is building up between Cèsar and her (I really like that the romance part of the story has only been a distant sub plot until now), Suzy is almost entirely back to her usual kick-butt self… We don’t get to see Ann in this instalment but I liked the introduction of Yelena as Isobel’s “intern”.

I enjoyed the mystery part of the story and the several twists & turns along the way. There is no black or white here and the line between good & evil is easily crossed, albeit unintentionally. Interesting perspectives are voiced and preconceptions are shattered, which make for a refreshing read.

A great read, I can’t wait to read the next instalment in the series!

· Book 1: Witch Hunt ★★★★
· Book 2: Silver Bullet ★★★
· Book 4: Shadow Burns ★★★★★
· Book 5: Deadly Wrong ★★★★
· Book 6: Ashes and Arsenic ★★★★
· Book 7: Once Darkness Falls ★★★★★
· Book 8: Bitter Thirst ★★

Drop. Dead. HILARIOUS!.

I READ THIS KNOWING NOTHING!!

Well..just the synopsis of the first two books in the series, but other than that, I knew nothing!!! It was the bomb! I was able to catch on fairly quick, whenever there was a moment that mentioned something happening in the first two stories, it was well explained and I took it in stride. the storyline never wavered. Absolutely hilarious!!

I literally busted out laughing when reading this in my kitchen. My grandparents just stared at me, and then my Grandpa asked my Grandma, "What's wrong with her?" I had to hole myself in the restroom cause I couldn't take knowing that they're only looking at me because I'm laughing. and I'm laughing at what happened in the book. Thus, making me crack up all over again. It was a never-ending cycle.

I can't really explain that to them, they won't get it....

I need a friend to book talk with, or gush over the hot male character and call dibbs on him first!.

This reminded me a lot of the Anita Blake series. Although, I consider this book YA and the Anita Blake series New Adult pertaining to the books' content, I still found some similar qualities. However, I do find this more appropriate for younger readers. Even with the jokes and the sarcasm, it fit perfectly.

I was trying to mentally grasp an image for the main character, Cesár Hawke, as well as Fritz and near the end, since having never read the first to books, I was finally able to judge their characteristics and get more of a feel from them. I only wanted to punch Janet and the Vice President in the face. Sorry to be so blunt, but not that sorry.

The details were so descriptive, I felt as if I were watching the whole thing while reading it. Great wording.

Overall, I am satisfied with the outcome and about what I thought of the book as a whole. To be honest, I was scared to start this book that is in the middle of a series. I always start from the beginning because I don't like missing out on things that may or may not be crucial in the next book. Anyways, I enjoyed reading this story and look forward to reading more great work.

I am so thankful that I stumbled upon SM Reine's Hotter than Helltown on Netgalley and was approved for an ARC read.

Why, you ask? Because it was JUST PLAIN FUN. I realized after I requested this one that it was book three, so I went back and tore through books one and two. They were just as fun as this one. In fact, the series was all about fun. The world-building was deftly done -- simple, easy to follow, and didn't blather on and on like so many authors do. She just jumped right into the story and made you learn as you went along -- and it WORKED.

All three of these books are worth the time, and they're not too long as it is, so please take a chance on these books, especially if you like Urban Fantasy. They're like Dresden-lite, and I can't wait for book four to come out.

SM Reine has a new fan... I've already downloaded some of her other series books to read more!!!

I enjoyed this book, the characters were amusing and the story flowed well.

This isn't the first book in the series and I haven't read the previous, I still managed to enjoy and pick up on characthers personalities.

I do prefer some romance with my paranormal reads, but this series is a recommended read if you fancy something different from romance with a main characther that doesn't take himself to serious.

now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.

The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.

i would highly recommend this author and this book.

Good gravy, I adore the world S.M. Reine has created with this series. I love the way everything is interconnected and that the bad guys aren't always black and white. And that BIG THINGS happen that tie into the Descent and Ascension series. *swoon*

Cèsar. Oh, Cèsar. He might not be the best witch in the world, but he has buckets of luck on his side and he seems to know all the right people. Or the wrong people. You know, depending on what side of Helltown he's standing in.

As it turns out, Cèsar isn't quite as bad at that witchy thing as he thinks. He just does things a little more unconventionally than his fellow witches. That includes tromping into Helltown and trusting a woman who can get answers from the dead. Or maybe I mean lusting over. Heh. I like when Cèsar loses his higher brain functions around Isobel.

Bottom line: This here is one badass series that just keeps getting better. S.M. Reine never fails to entertain and I sort of love seeing the other side of OPA.

I was sent a copy of the book for review though Net Galley, as always, all opinions are my own.

This is a series I’ve been meaning to read because I’ve heard such good things about it. I didn’t have a chance to read the first two books in the series, but fortunately this one can be read as a standalone without much confusion.

This book grabbed me from the beginning and I had to sit and finish it in one night (which meant I stayed up until nearly 4am reading, whoops!) It’s a great mix of paranormal and crime with a cast of amazing characters. Cèsar, who happens to be a witch that is allergic to magic, is partnered with Suzy. I loved the way they worked together and how she was always protecting his butt when he struggled; it’s what good partners are supposed to do. There are so many parts of this book that had me laughing out loud which is the sure sign of a good book. I can’t wait to go back and read the other books in the series and see what else SM Reine has in store for these characters.

“Hotter than Helltown” is the third book in the Cesar Hawkes Preternatural Affairs Series. I really enjoyed this series, although it is different to S.M. Reine’s previous work. There is no romantic element to this series, which is okay, because I think it works better without it. Cesar really is one ass kicking witch, and I love the fact he has a “Firefly” DVD obsession. “Hotter than Helltown” has more of a horror edge to it, as this instalment deals with a mutilating serial killer. This series is perfect for Jim Butcher’s Dresden fans, as it blends the supernatural, witchcraft and procedural investigations. I am a huge SM Reine fan and Hotter than Helltown is a welcome addition. If you haven’t read SM Reine before, I urge you to do so immediately! Many of her books are often free- and usually the first book in a series is perpetually free, so you have no excuse not to be reading. Seriously, this is a well written series that is so fast paced, you will be left wanting more.

There’s a serial killer in town – their victims are horrendously mutilated and increasing in frequency. Worse, all signs point to something supernatural doing the killing – which makes it Cesar’s and Suzy’s job to catch the killer. And Cesar does not do bodies

Almost as intimidating, the boss is in town. She has an ultimatum – because Cesar accessed information he shouldn’t have in a crisis, he needs to become Aspis to Fritz’s Kopis. Shield to his Sword. The fighter’s witch guardian – and there’s a test involved. A complicated test that is rather beyond Cesar’s skill level

And if he fails… well, being fired from the agency may have consequences

I do like how Cesar has grown in this book, including his powers and abilities. This is somewhat odd for me because I can be quite scathing when we have protagonists who constantly level up every book, finding new depths of special powers. But with Cesar it worked because it was very subtle. Also because he’s very much behind the curve of his colleagues. Suzy has awesome power, his boss, Fritz, is a skilled Kopis who can clearly throw down and Isobel has some very specialised magical skills – Cesar often feels like the odd man. In some ways, it works because he’s the one who will think about the mundane before the magical but other times it’s a hindrance because he needs to be reminded of the magical.

It also fits really well with his past and development – Cesar is surrounded by major talents and has grown up around major talents. He has thoroughly absorbed the idea that he’s not very good simply because he’s been surrounded by people who are totally awesome and has internalised his own incapacity because of that. It’s really well done to see not his growing ability, but him being forced to look past his instinctive “I can’t do it” initial response to any challenge.

This fits really well with the ongoing theme of Cesar finding his feet in the new department and having to learn quickly as well as him stepping up to be Fritz’s Apis. Cesar has spent the whole series being thrown into situations well beyond his experience and comfort zone and having to rise to the challenge

I’m looking forward to seeing him and Fritz bounce off each other as well – they really do work together

Beyond the characters, I really love this world. Especially how it is connected with several other of the author’s series in the same world – allowing us to see everything through different lens. So we can see Elise viewing the Union as an imposing threat and demons as not-all-that-worrisome unless they’re higher up in the Descent Series and then here we have Cesar working for and closely with the Union while fearing even the most minor demons as terrifying enemies. The different series have also worked to make a really wide and rich world full of different denizens with different views of them all. This is built on a magic system that is both individual but also has a solid sense of rules and procedures that speaks to deeper world building that I always appreciate

Also, I love the geeky shout outs.

The plot itself has a number of twists and is a pretty decent mystery with some excellently described gruesomeness that really drives home the horror of what is happening. There’s lots of nuance, no easy answers and, ultimately, a perpetrator I can’t reveal for spoilers but one who really does rock the world building and a whole lot of preconceptions. I loved it.

We have a number of awesome female characters – Suzy is skilled, tough, snarky, immense fun, intelligent and both points out and calls out sexism in the workplace. Isobel is powerful psychic, sexual without being shamed for it, is crafty and cunning and has no time for Cesar’s refusal to pursue a relationship because she’s his boss’s ex – her ex doesn’t own her. Even Isobel’s apprentice who I think everyone would cheerfully strangle is still powerful in her own right – and one of the main flaws of one of the female antagonists is that she’s quite simply too good a person.

On the negative, Cesar has some of the biggest Dresden Goggles I’ve seen and Isobel and Suzy have had their super sexiness described repeatedly in often inappropriate times far too often. Stop drooling over co-workers, it’s unprofessional! Suzy and Isobel also Do Not Like each other, capitals intended. Either for no reason (beyond the standard that a strong woman simply cannot like another woman) or because they’re competing for Cesar’s affections.

I received Hotter than Helltown in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I honestly can’t explain it. I love everything about this world that S.M. Reine has created. I fell in love with her unique take on werewolves in Seasons of the Moon. I love the rough edge to the characters in the Descent series. The Ascension series knit the characters of both these series together brilliantly. The Preternatural Affairs series is yet another layer (or pre-layer really) of the same world. As much as I love Rylie, Seth, Abel, Elise, James and everyone else in this crazy, mixed-up world, if I had to choose right now, Cèsar would be my hands down favorite.

Hotter Than Helltown finds Cèsar stressing over more than just the magical crimes that he has to investigate. He also has an impossible test to pass that he is totally not ready for. The case that he’s on becomes as much of a diversion as it is a challenge.

I think what I liked most about Hotter Than Helltown was the fact that readers got to know characters a lot better. At least it felt that way to me. For some reason, in the previous books I didn’t really feel connected to Fritz. I didn’t dislike him, I just didn’t know how to feel about him I guess. His interactions with Cèsar in Hotter Than Helltown changed that for me I think. There’s a lot of things about being inside Cèsar’s head that change my perspective.

Some of the other things that I’ve liked about this series so far are the vague references to characters that we already know from the previous series. One character in particular was mentioned in passing and if I wasn’t paying attention I might have missed it. It kinda made me chuckle.

Basically, these books keep you on your toes – in more ways than one. The characters are smart, witty and the interactions between them are more of the same. There’s action, danger, mystery and the world building never ceases to amaze me. There’s definitely more in store for these characters and I have a feeling that there will be even more cross overs, which is fine by me. I can’t wait to see what layers are added next.

I finished this book a while ago & am only now getting around to reviewing bc I'm terrible. Hotter than Helltown is the 3rd book in S.M. Reine's Preternatural Affairs series which focuses on Agent Cèsar Hawke. S.M. Reine sent me an ARC of Hotter than Helltown so that I could give an honest review of the book. I enjoyed reading this book, and I must say that with every book I read of Reine's her writing continues to improve. I also enjoy being able to get a sort of 'behind in the scenes' look if you will, with this series. We get to know what's going on on the official side of things when we're usually seeing the less official side with Elise & Riley's stories. Also, in both of those stories we sort of see the OPA as bad guys because our main characters do and it interesting, for me at least, to get a different view of what's happening and therefore get a full picture.

In the 3rd installment of Preternatural Affairs Agent Hake is hunting down a serial killer who is horribly mutilating their victims. Plus, his job -and more- is on the line if he doesn't past the OPA's aspis approval test. We explore a little bit more of the interworking of the OPA, Fritz's history begins to open up some, as well as Hawke's own history. I really enjoyed this storyline, and having read other books from this universe actually figured it out a bit before Hawke. I also enjoy just the fact that this book is much lighter than the Elise/Rylie story lines which feel very heavy with everything that has happened. I almost feel the same way about this as I do X-Men. I always really enjoy the few episodes of the cartoon before we get into the "Sentinal's destroying everything" part. Which I get is where a bulk of the story takes place, okay I'm way off topic here.

If you enjoy any of Reine's other series, I recommend this one as well & if you're wondering if you want to continue this series, again I recommend this. If you haven't read anything by Reine, and are a fun of the supernatural and a bit of horror I say give her work a try! Have fun, and hope you enjoy the book!

Hotter Than Helltown with its unexpected male lead, was a marvelous urban fantasy...and I am an urban fantasy lover. To say, I devoured Hotter than Helltown would be an understatement.

Agent Cesar Hawke is on the case and mutilated bodies are on the ticket. Something very powerful is leaving maimed and dead men in wake and its Cesar's job to find the culprit before more lives are lost.

Cesar was a PI until he garnered the attention of The Office of Preternatural Affairs. Now he works for them.

Cesar has a great team behind him. His Preternatural Affairs partner is Suzy. She is a strong witch that gives him a razzing but comes to the rescue when the chips are down. His unofficial partner is Isobel, a powerful witch in her own rights but woowoo theatrics and clothesless ways draws more attention than is good. Fritz is Cesar's rich boss, Isobel's ex, and soon to be a magically bonded partner to Cesar. Together this rag-tag team must infiltrate Helltown, a place where no sane person would travel...especially at night.

This is the 3rd book in the Preternatural Affairs series and I did have to play some catch up but for the most part I was on board pretty quickly. The cast of characters is diverse and highly entertaining. Although, I might of missed the first 2 books in this series...I won't be missing anymore. S.M. Reine's storytelling is fascinating, her world building seduces you into an amazing fictional realm you want to explore.

I received this copy of Hotter Than Helltown from Red Iris Books in exchange for a honest review.

Agent Cesar Hawke is on another case, a killer is mutilating bodies in LA and with questions piling up and the killings getting more brutal even the most evil demons in Helltown are afraid of the murderer in this intriguing paranormal case.

The story has a steady to fast paced and smooth flowing plot that keeps readers on their toes. The author brings the story to life with well written scenes and details that capture the imagination and the well orchestrated drama and suspense draw the reader deeper into the story while the danger sends chills down the spine. The strong compelling characters are easily related to, grab the reader’s attention and charm readers with their own special brand of humor.

Cesar doesn’t always follow the book and comes up with some unusual means of solving the crime and he’s about to find out that the murderer isn’t black and white either. There are quite a few twists and turns that keep the readers guessing and lots of chuckles as the reader gets caught up in the drama and mystery of the case. And let’s not forget about Isobel and Suzy who add their own brand of fun and drama to the story and to Cesar’s life, which adds depth and spice to the story and we also get to know a little more about the characters.

S. M. Reine creates enjoyable and entertaining worlds with her special spin that freshen up the story and gives them a fun but serious feel. I have to say I am going to have to go back and read the second book in this series because I somehow missed it, but lucky for me it wasn’t hard to catch on to where the characters are at. I will say however that this one was a little harder for me to get into at the beginning than the first one, but once I got past that point everything picks back up and gets going strong as ever.

Love me some Preternatural Affairs! Ah! César and friends are back again – and this time, his murder case may just kill him. That is, if his boss doesn’t kill him first. After the action in the second in the Preternatural Affairs series, Silver Bullet, César is in big trouble. He used a cell phone he shouldn’t have, and the VP of the Office of Preternatural Affairs is out for César’s guts – literally. And if César doesn’t pass his Aspis exam, to become Shield to Director Fritz Friederling, she just might have said guts for garters.Could things get worse? Well, sure they can! For there is a vicious demon on the loose, a demon strong enough to kill a Kopis by simply being in the area. With more bodies dropping, all brutally savaged, the race is on as César, his partner Suzy, Isobel the necrocognitive, and Fritz all scramble to find the demon. A demon who may be unkillable. As always, Reine does a wonderful job of writing a tight narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat, using a level of creativity that I truly admire. There is terror and blood, but also a great deal of subtle humor in Reine’s works. I enjoyed the first two in the series, and can hardly wait for Sara’s next César book!Highly recommended. If you haven’t read the first two, I would suggest reading them first. They are really good books, but if you haven’t read them, you can catch up easily enough in this volume. However, it won’t be nearly as much fun!I received Hotter Than Helltown from the publisher in return for a realistic review. All thoughts are my own.

I received an Advance Review Copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest and fair review.

Hotter than Helltown was standard light fare - the plot moves along quickly and it doesn't require much attention to detail. I did enjoy the whole idea of fallen angels and the mythos behind their legacy. I would be interested in reading more about the world SM Reine has created - but this book doesn't go into the world building with great detail.

Cesar Hawke, while written rather sketchily, (you don't really get a sharp focus of the man, more like a blurred idea of a character) has a cool sounding name. I like that he is warily cautious of everything and I also like that this is one male character in urban fantasy who isn't trigger happy. However, the one thing that didn't appeal to me is his strange attraction towards Isobel. She hasn't done anything that would make me trust her (as a reader) and I am not sure what the attraction is. I have read the first two books in the series and in both, I have had felt the same lack of trust. I think the biggest problem was that she conveniently didn't mention she knew Cesar's boss (from book 1) - to me, that was a major violation of trust.

I feel the most realistic character is Suzy - she continues to be sarcastic, weary and a supportive, good friend to Cesar. Again, she isn't fleshed out as a character I could care for which is why these books read like a fast paced soap opera. If I didn't take notes while reading, I would have probably already forgotten details of the plot.

Disclosure: This ebook was provided by the author in exchange for an HONEST and not necessarily positive review.

Cesar Hawke an agent with the Office of Preternatural Affairs has a new case. What a way to start a Saturday. Then he gets to spend time with agent Suzy Takeuchi. Sassy, mouthy, one of the guys. Can it get any better then this? After getting in trouble with the OPA, Cesar needs to take his aspis approval test to get out of trouble. How can he possible study when people are turning up dead. Now they have bodies showing up missing body parts, eyes here a nose there and always missing a heart. he doesn't mind chasing down bad witches or demons going bad but he doesn't do the blood and guts well.

This book is part of the Preternatural Affairs series. They are stand alones or can be read as a series. Cesar is funny. He is whiny, thinks he is a bad witch and gets sick at the sight of blood. Suzy is rough and tumble and loved giving Cesar a hard time, pretty much about anything. The story moves along at a good pace and the action keeps you turning pages. The main story is about the case and how they solve it. The secondary story is Cesar learning that he is a better witch then he gives himself credit for. Wonderful read for lovers of paranormal and mystery

Stumbling upon a series of books (usually because the first one is free) that I want to read is not easy. I have pretty snobby tastes in writing. Most of the time, even if the story is interesting, something always keeps me from wanting more. Sometimes it is the lack of detailed editing. Sometimes it is the lack of character development. (I really don’t care to spend more than one book on paper flat characters pigeon-holed into a forced plot.) Sometimes it is the unbelievable plot, the one that makes me roll my eyes, snicker or just downright turns my stomach.

I am still trying to understand the miraculous mix of elements that makes me return to Cèsar Hawke over and over again. He’s not the greatest of characters. He is a little old-fashioned. He does idolize women in a very sensual manner. He makes mistakes. He is stubborn.
Maybe it is all the elements of the plot that simply moves in a nice, unforced flow.

It could even be the smooth voice of Jeffrey Kafer reading me to sleep.
Whatever it is, I keep returning to this series, even holding them to the side, waiting for the moment when I need a magical fix. I am trying to make them last.

My advice? Get the audible version. It’s a quick afternoon listen that will not disappoint.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When I started to read this book I had to stop after the first chapter and purchase the first two in the series and read them first. I have a weird quirk, I can't start reading a series part way through, I have to start at the beginning. And what a great series this is.

Agent Cesar Hawke is trying to track down a murderer who is capable of clearing the minds of the dead so there is no way for him to find out what they last saw even with the help of a specialist. Soon enough he finds himself on the trail of the killer and even though that trail heads into Helltown, the bad guys there are scared of this killer.

When his boss is kidnapped, he works out why people are being killed, what is doing the killing and the reason why his boss has been taken. With the help of a medium, he tracks down his boss and in the process of rescuing him, he ends up bonding with him.

There is quite a lot I could say about this book but I don't want to give away any details. I will say that it is a fast-paced read with a great storyline, wonderful characters and witty one-liners.

I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes Urban Fantasy.

Disclosure: I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley.

This is the third book in the series Preternatural Affairs Series by S.M. Reine and it follows the story of Agent Cesar Hawke. Hawke is a witch that was enlisted for his natural powers, but he isn't as strong as the rest of his family. Or rather he hasn't embraced the strength he has within. In this installment a killer is horribly mutilating their victims and the case leads them into Helltown.

For the most part I enjoyed this story and the writing style of S.M. Reine, I do think I would have enjoyed it more if I had previously read the other installments however. The storylines from the previous installments are hinted at in this one, but don't overpower so you can easily read it as a stand alone. One of the things I liked about this story is that it is written exclusively from Hawkes point of view. A majority of the stories I read are written in the female perspective so it was nice to read from a males for a change.

I would recommend this story to anyone who is into paranormal mysteries.

Review for the boxed-set :

I deleted a lot of books from my tablet recently : they had awesome reviews on Goodreads, but I hated them (boring story already read a thousand times, jerk of a hero, airhead of a heroin, etc). I began to doubt myself : everybody loves them but me, what's wrong with me ? Then I began to think : what's wrong with the reviewers :p
So I thought : what if I digged among the books that have moderate reviews and see if I like one ? And I began reading this boxed set and bam ! Love it ! It's become one of my favorite series ! And I'm so lucky to have the boxed-set of the first 3 stories, because I didn't have to wait to read more.
Funny, fast-paced, good characters, original hero (he's a witch - yes, a witch, not a sorcerer - and sneezes when there's powerful magic around him ; he's not an alpha-jerk even if, well, he's a guy), evolution of the plot : I loved it all.
And now that I've devoured those, I need to read more. So I'm not going to wait until that e-reader is cleaned, I'll buy the rest ASAP !

In the third book in SM Reine's Preternatural Affairs series, Cèsar is given some of his toughest challenges yet.
In a gruesome case that leaves handsome blonde men mutilated and sends him into Helltown, he's got enough on his plate, but he also needs to do his binding ceremony to become Director Frtiz Friederling's aspis. If he fails, the company head will personally execute him.
Cèsar is as snarky as ever, and even better as he realizes that he has more potential than anyone, even himself, gives him credit for. His partner, Suzy, is spunky and adorable. She's by far my favorite character by now.
The necrocog, Isobel, is back again, and looks like she's here to stay, when I had thought she'd be gone by now when I read the first book in the series.
I love how Ms. Reine added in a crime mystery to her paranormal fare in this series. With the end of The Ascension Series looming upon us, this promises to fill the void of losing Elise and James!

5/5--great work!

**I received a copy of this ARC for an honest review**

This is the first book I have read by this author. I was definitely curious especially since it is in a man's point of view. This is the third book in the Preternatural Affairs series. It follows a male witch, Cesar Hawke, as he and his partner have to solve a crime involving mutilated dead bodies that are popping up all over the place. It took me a little while to get to this book, but once I got into it, I didn't put it down until I was done.

Cesar is absolutely hilarious. I found him squeamish, unsure of himself, always seems to have a plan, and yet very likable. He is also very loyal to his partner and his director. Towards the end of the book, he is able to find the confidence he needs to pull off some hard magic and save his boss. I look forward to reading more books with him in it.

SM Reine is an amazing writer with an avid imagination. I always love her cover designs. I am always amazed at how quickly she can put together such well written books! Each book in this series grabs you and draws you in. It has great characters like Cesar (not so great at being a witch- who ever heard of a witch that was allergic to magic!), Suzy (who is always covering Cesar's butt), and Isobel (the "death witch"). If you love books about witches and demons you will love this series. SM Reine is yet to let me down with any of her writing. I have been hooked since I read Descent. If you haven't read her other works yet I strongly recommend you do so!

My my my, what an enjoyable experience reading this book is. You don't have to have read the first two books in order to enjoy this one and understand what is going on. The author does a wonderful job inserting the explanation without ruining the moment. The writing is well constructed and nicely edited. The characters are well fleshed out with well handled development through the book. The plot is intriguing and has a good flow. If you even slightly enjoy this genre or this author I'd have to recommend getting a copy and curling up for a good read. Thank you Red Iris Books for allowing me to read an evaluation copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.
