Joi Sommers earned her detective’s shield the hard way --on the streets of Chicago’s Westside. Having earned a reputation for tackling grisly cases that typically weed female cops off homicide, Joi transfers to the city’s south suburbs—envisioning a calmer life. That notion halts abruptly when she receives a predawn call to speed to the home of a wealthy church Elder found murdered in the den of his stylish home.
Detective Sommers and her partner Russell investigate what initially appears to be a random homicide, presumably committed during the act of robbery. However, the gruesome nature of the killing and closer scrutiny of the evidence signals that the motive for this murder was much more personal.
The question is, who would want this pillar of the community dead, and why?
A solid first effort at mystery fiction. Broken Dolls tells the story of a murder investigation, but more. The devastating effects of the keeps a secret in the name of "holding our family together" that is so common in our culture, especially the Black community is fully explored. The characters are believable and learning each of their stories kept me engaged. The mystery plotting was not as strong, and the ending wasn't quite as powerful as it could have been. But overall I had to know what would happen next. Not your typical whodunit for sure.
Broken Dolls is a suspenseful murder mystery must read. The main character is the lead detective on the case who expertly solves it. Many personal demons and a horrible secret is revealed all leading to an unexpected twist to the story! The book is a well written page turner! I appreciate the author's Chicagoland references in this book too.

I could not put this book down once I started. The mystery of a murder and family secrets wrapped in one. The author weaves a web that unravels as you read. You will not be disappointed with this read.
A very confusing story with the constant back and forth between years. There was no chance of solving the mystery nor for the Gregg family to get any closure because every character in the story had a secret or was telling lies. This was no way to help anyone.
