In accordance with the wishes of Queen Victoria, young Earl Ciel Phantomhive embarks on a jaunt to Germany with his elite butler, Sebastian, in tow. Gruesome and mysterious deaths are occurring on the continent, and along with the fear of contagion that permeates the air there are also rumors of witches and werewolves running amok. When Ciel's party heads right into the heart of a cursed forest where supernatural creatures are said to dwell, they run straight into a witch! In fact, several of them! And the village head is none other than a little girl who appears as though she's stepped out of a fairy tale?!
Yana Toboso (枢 やな Toboso Yana) is a female Japanese manga artist born in Warabi, Saitama Prefecture, Japan and currently resides in Yokohama. She is best known for Black Butler (黒執事 Kuroshitsuji), a popular shonen manga series.
She has also written yaoi under the pen name Yanao Rock
Appearance Yana Toboso draws herself as a devil with a black body and horns, a white head, and a pointed tail. She has never uploaded a picture of herself, so her actual appearance is unknown.
This is my first time reviewing a manga, and it feels a little weird....but Mom said it's pretty much like reviewing an actual book, as you're not only critiquing the story but the art as well.
The art in this volume, as usual, is solid. The chapters come out every month and it's obvious why-she puts a lot of detail and volume into her artwork, and it's really pretty to look at. She's a fan of full-page illustrations to show off the art and I can't complain, as it is gorgeous!
The whole curse thing is interesting and I'm interested to see where it goes and how Ciel is affected because of it. Right now he hates all 'adults' and seems to believe he's in that slave market again.
We get to see some of Finny's backstory, which is always interesting since I really like Ciel's three servants. Since he's on the cover of the next volume, maybe we'll get to see why he got his name and see more of his backstory.
The German witch girl is cute and a lot of fun. I love seeing her obsession with the 'outside world' and wanting to speak English and wear English gowns and even wanting to eat like a proper English lady.
The comedy is really funny in this volume, especially when the witch admits she's never seen another man before and keeps using sexual innuendos to describe perfectly innocent situations. My favorite part was when Ciel tells Sebastian she's a little girl and therefore wants to play with toys, and Sebastian tells her Ciel is the type of man to play with 'bedroom toys'.
Plus there's the twist of the witch possibly working for the wolf-man who cursed Ciel? I guess that'll be expanded on in the following volumes.
Overall this was a really enjoyable volume, but I wouldn't expect anything less from Black Butler! I can't wait to read the 20th volume!
We have it all in this volume: horror and gothic vibes check! aww moments check! sweet moments (and poor, poor Ciel!) check! (also, poor Finn!) check! (and let's not forget Sebastian!) check! hilarious scenes check! mystery check! I need the next one, and I need it ASAP!
Chapter 88: a green witch with bound feet. Poor girl. I loved to see Ciel so embarrassed, although I don’t like that he was put in sexual situations -that girl has a perv mind ha!. And Sebastian cooking
Chapter 89: Sebastian crying Sebastian melting
Chapter 90: Ciel remembering his past. And can't have Sebastian near.. or any other adult. He can rely in Finny only, who also has a dark story. Poor Finny! He loves his Master.
Chapter 91: Lucky little witch, despite it all. She has Sebastian as a butler until Ciel gets better. And she is an apt pupil in Sebastian's lessons. The staff is not happy, but Tanaka-san knows better.
Chapter 92: Sebastian in a dilemma... do they leave or not??
Seems like the werewolves were real. The mystery is not even close to get solved. Our duo is apart because Ciel is suffering and Sebastian can't go near him. The art is as good as ever... (Sebastian's hands! my little fetish)
Yana's confidence and fearlessness as an author are stunning in Vol. 19. She boldly takes Sebastian, Ciel, and the household staff to new levels of darkness, danger, emotional pain and turmoil, while deepening the Cursed Forest/Werewolf arc.
Years ago I read a well known author's reply to a question from a newly published author. IIRC the well known author was Lisa Scottolini (best selling legal mysteries). The new author asked for advice from this well established author. Ms. Scottolini replied, "Don't be afraid of your story or characters!". This quote came to mind as I read Vol. 19.
Sebas, Ciel and staff are offered refuge in the village of Wolfscluct by 11 year old Lady Sullivan, Emerald Witch and liege of the forest, over the vehement protests of weapon-wielding, angry villagers. The Emerald Castle's poisonous flowers and displays of creepy occult objects unsettle Ciel and his companions, but Ciel's discomfort soon grows in leaps and bounds.
In a fun bit of comic relief, Lady Sullivan's sudden and overt sexual advances toward Ciel outrage and embarrass him, but he must smooth things over to gain information about the wolfman, who once protected the village, but now holds it hostage.
*No Spoilers* Ciel is plunged into physical and emotional pain and turmoil, and can only bear the company of Finney, the gardener. Finney's backstory, and how he became acquainted with Ciel, is revealed. I enjoyed learning more about Finney, as difficult as it was to read. Ciel's traumatic episode is heartwrenching. :-( I was almost in tears, and I've only cried reading one book in my entire life.
Amid more danger and chaos, Ciel makes a demand that Sebastian must follow, ratcheting up the suspense to a new level.
Yikes, I like my paranormal/urban fantasy with a darker edge, but this was a tough read. Superb writing.
Yana's BEST EVER, SEXIEST Sebastian drawing imo - Oh.My.God! Across from the Table of Contents at the beginning -- Sebas embracing a very shapely, sexy woman, on the verge of their lips meeting ... her lips are shown, but her face is hidden ... their joined hands embrace an apple.
FINNY DESERVES NOTHING BUT A LIFE OF PERPETUAL HAPPINESS AND A LUSCIOUS AND THRIVING GARDEN.
In this volume, you explore pieces of the past in both Ciel and Finny and booooooy does it hurt. Ciel is an interesting character to me because he has this underlying sense of vulnerability, and Yana Toboso does a wonderful job of exploring it.
With Finny, you get another glimpse of his life pre-Phantomhive manor, and see how he met Ciel and Sebastian. One of my favourite aspects of Finny’s personality is the fact that he’s been put through a tremendous amount of abuse, but has never let it make him bitter.
Cudo Kocham angst hehe
The end of the last volume had me curious and wary, but this volume… Just took things to a whole new level.
So apparently the werewolf threat is more serious than everyone took it. Especially for Ciel. I won’t spoil what happens, but it’s bad, and very surprising. This took a huge backstep for Ciel, and it’s clearly hard on Sebastian, as well as everyone else. And it’s just plain hard to see Ciel like this. The poor kid. And it's nice to see how much Sebastian really does care for him.
Before all of that, it was interesting to meet the little girl, Lady Sullivan, and her cohorts and town. She is surprisingly naughty, and hilariously so. And after that, we even got to see some of sweet Finn’s history, who I’ve always loved. He’s always been a sweetheart, but to really see what he’s been through and what Ciel did for him. Just aww.
And while I’m just plain curious about the werewolf thing, and what Lady Sullivan is going to do about it, I want to see what happens with Ciel more. It just hurts to see him like this.
This was much better than the previous book in the series and I really am looking forward to this whole cursed forest/wolfman story arc that is started here.
This story continues with the whole creepy cursed forest and the strange Wolfman that haunts it. I really enjoyed the new storyline and absolutely loved the crazy Emerald witch. I am very excited to see what happens in the next volume.
Overall, I continue to enjoy our awesome regular characters and the amazing illustration throughout. I feel like this book started a much more exciting and interesting storyline than the boarding school storyline of the last few books. I would highly recommend this manga series to those who enjoy historical paranormal manga.
Another Black Butler manga is finished, the werewolf's and witches in this volume were interesting but no one could still top Sebastian. :D Because really? After seeing how big chaos you made, you still worry about preparing breakfast? Wow...
I’m enjoying reading black butler by just hopping from one book to another so I would recommend it, I feel so bad for the girl I wanna give her a hug and take her to a bunch of beautiful areas. This book was still easy to understand despite not reading the books consecutively!!
Ciel, Sebastian, and all of the Phantomhive staff members find themselves guests of Siegliende Sullivan, the Emerald Witch of the isolated German village of Wolfsschulcht, who is a girl the same age as Ciel. Accustomed to absolute authority, yet curious about the outside world, Sullivan extends the hand of friendship and hospitality to Ciel and Sebastian (in ways that sometimes shock Ciel). Wolfram, Sullivan’s servant and the villagers are far less welcoming, especially when Sebastian proves to far outstrip Wolfram in his skills as a manservant. Sullivan warns her guests not to wander in the nearby forest. The queen’s guard dog and his devil of a butler are not inclined to obey, especially when they’re there to investigate. This leads to deadly consequences for Ciel and dangerous ones for Sebastian. It’s up to the Emerald Witch and (much to his surprise) Finny to face and deal with those consequences.
Readers become acquainted with Siegliende Sullivan in this volume, who’s an intriguing mixture of strength, knowledge, vulnerability, and ignorance, shaped by her environment, like and unlike Ciel. She’s at the center of that environment, bringing the village, her castle, and the residents of both to life by contrast, intensifying the mystery. The bond between Sebastian and Ciel is tested, allowing Finny to play a surprising part where some of his past is revealed, along with more of what happened to Ciel while he was in the hands of the cult which led to his demonic contract.
For presenting several intriguing mysteries which overlapped smoothly with each other in the rich, striking art style of this series, introducing a vibrant, yet sinister new setting which developed the characters further, this gets four stars.
God this series is a roller coaster ride from hell because suddenly we are cooking again.
Ciel and Sebastian are stuck in the remote village run by the (smol) Emerald Witch and while chasing after the mythical wolfman in the forest, they get cursed. Ciel's trauma comes back with a vengeance and he's emotionally unstable and not able to handle adults around him, including Sebastian.
Ciel my poor baby boy.😭 Literally I was feeling so bad for him it gave me a lil tummy ache like that got a little kick to it.
Any time we touch upon his trauma I want to cry, throw up, and then hug him like he's been THROUGH IT and then we got this evil fuckass curse taking his damn eyesight and making him relive his trauma?? Rude.
Why must be always get icky when children are involved??? First we have this child witch coming in talking about having a threesome then her grabbing Ciel's crotch, then Ciel telling Sebastian to get some toys and play with her in bed? Ciel doesn't mean it in THAT way and they just play regular games of course, because she's a child. But to even be alluding to inappropriate things is not funny and so creepy.😭
Ciel was uncomfortable and mad this entire scene because it's so gross and the entire thing is just weirdo behavior. Putting children in sexual situations for comic relief is so no thank you. Especially when that child is a goddamn SA survivor is cruel.
I do really like Sieglinde though !! She's such a cutie and ow ow her bound feet. She stronger than me because I would have just cut that shit off instead of living in agonizing pain.
Excuse me why is the very first time we see even a little bit of Sebastian without a shirt it's when he's all fucked up with a curse.🙄 That art of him in chapter 88 with that woman, goddamn that was gorgeous.
I've read up to volume; #24; with an average rating of: ★★★☆☆ 3.4/5
I was sort of blind for this couple arcs. I knew the green witch arc is out already but I never got to it, fully. Disliked the way that arc ended and the explanation they gave us felt out of field to what we've been dealing with. However I'm digging the blue cult arc so much. Glad the school characters are back for another round of crazy.
Volume 19 continues with the Emerald Witch arc and it is definitely very dark. This book was over way too quickly for me and I really can't wait to get my hands on volume 20. It is definitely one of the darker arcs and has references to things you wouldn't expect like foot binding. It's actually quite emotional as well and I can't believe it's been left where it has been. What has happened to Ciel is really distressing and even Sebastian is flustered by everything that is going on. Another really strong story so far into the series.
The storyline's so freaking awesome in this arc! I love such black kind of magic happening, with witches, in a forest... So mysterious and perfect! And Ciel's having a trauma, rejecting Sebastian T_T Oh also the part where Sieglinde was lecturing Sebastian about devils was hilarious! XD I can't wait I need to read the rest >~<
