Shintarou Kisaragi, a NEET--person "Not in Education, Employment, or Training"--has refused to leave the comfort of his room for two whole years. But Shintarou's easy and solitary life is about to take an unexpected turn when his computer crashes and he is forced to venture into the world he was happy to shut out forever...and stumbles into the middle of a hostage situation!
This was both stranger and more complex than the blurbs makes it sound. I have not tried the songs or other interrelated material yet.
My library provided this book. They also have volumes 5 and 8. Interesting choices, library. I appreciate you for once having the first volume instead of 2 and 4, which is more common.
To be quite honest, my only real knowledge of what the plot is over the long-term comes from internet sites giving me spoilers that illuminate the beginning plot so far. It's hard to review what is basically an introduction to the story, but here goes.
The Kagerou Project is a Vocaloid song series created by a Japanese man whose pen name is "Jin". A "vocaloid" is a song synthesizer software technology. The author used "image" songs of the various characters to tell a story. As part of this multi-media project, a light novel and manga (herein reviewed) were released.
The first volume of the manga tells the story of two siblings, a brother and a sister. First the brother's story comes. Kiseragi Shintaro is an absolute NEET (standing for "Not in Education, Employment, or Training") who has not left his bedroom for two years. Something happened to drive him to this state (obviously).
Anyways, he eventually tries to make some money of his own by releasing some synthesized songs. This effort is made difficult by the "virtual girl" who torments him. About a year into his time refusing to leave his room, an attachment was sent to him that, when he opened it, released a seeming female program of some sort. One that loves teasing him.
One day, this teasing goes too far, and the virtual girl, Ene, causes to stumble and spill soda on his computer keyboard. Unfortunately, it is a national holiday, so Shintaro has two choices: wait for his new keyboard to be delivered in a few days, or venture outside his room to go to the store.
He does, and winds up in the middle of a hostage situation, the resolution of which leads to revelations from his sister, whom the second part was about.
Kiseragi Momo has always had this effect on people and she hates it. Yes, it has helped her to pay the bills by doing pop idol stuff, but it also gets in the way of doing normal "teenage girl" things. The effect she has on people is that they always notice here and, whether they love her or hate her, want to be near her and see her.
Eventually, Momo has a breakdown from this attention and flees from a crowd. There, she meets someone who promises her that they can help her control this wierd thing she does and live a normal life.
It's hard to summarize what happens further without giving everything away, so I can't. I also have some clue where this is going from spoilers, but that is not necessarily apparent right off the bat. It seems that Shintaro, Momo, and their friends have some sort of powers, but that will be seen more in-depth. The friends, by the way, are mysterious but pretty interesting so far.
I will say that I liked the artwork. It wasn't flashy and almost water-brush like as in some works, or blocky and bare-bones as in others. It got the points across nicely.
The buildup and progression of the plot also was neat. Despite the cliched going back to tell how we got here, it worked. Partly because it showed how a different character "got there" and thus ties the tales of the first two characters, the Kiseragi siblings, together. Of course, it also shows how the other characters, of whom other tales in the future will show more of, got there, so it really did tie things together neatly at the end of the manga. At least so far it did.
I just can't pin down what I think for sure of this series, but I definitely like it so far and look forward to the light novel release from Yen On later this month.
Teens with super powers and maybe a single personality trait each team up to form a little band of runaways/outsiders/outcasts/rebels/renegades/runaways. So hum-hum bland that I looked at the cover four days later and had no idea what was inside until I read the back cover copy.
I need to start paying more attention when I pick random manga from the library shelf. I'm finding that titles like this one that are adapted from a novel series or video games in Japan are generally so generic and dull as to be unworthy of my attention. Sometimes I do not find out until the end matter or until I closely read the indicia, but I need to beware of cover clues like "original story by" (as in this case) or "concept by" or "original character designs by."
This manga is part of a mixed-media project which started with originally vocaloid songs, and then expanded into manga and novels, and then finally an anime, which supposedly all work together to tell the story, meaning it’s probably a huge commitment.
Anyways this volume was good and funny, and about way more than what the blurb suggests. And the art is good too
It is a great story and I'm already obsessed with everyone. Espcially Ene and Kano. I also adore the drawings, I don't know I kinda think everyone is too attractive lol
The cover of the book was cute so I decided to read, had no idea it was based off of songs! The plot is sort of confusing though, I generally thought this would be about some loner (who´s always inside) who would go outside for the first time and maybe meet some friends, WHILE having some weird AI be his sidekick or something. But I think it could be about a bunch of different characters? I´m not really sure. I´ll definitely read the second volume just to make sure, I hope it exceeds my expectations.
First manga of this series !! So far we met some characters but I’m still pretty confused on what exactly the organization is supposed to be. It’s basically traumatized kids with powers. I absolutely cannot remember their names but I love Kano. I actually started reading this because I saw Kano on a YouTube video and I wanted to know more about him. I’m going to star with the mangas and read the novels after so I hope that it’s a good order ! I really like the art and the story even tho I’m confused.
Loved this series! Worth a read. Watch the anime as well... And listen to the music! Jin worked hard to create a story through a ton of different mediums, and it works so well together if you know in which order to enjoy the story. This is my favorite manga series. It's got relatable characters, androids, romance, death, drama, and a lot of suspense!
Nice story, I guess. I'm not completely sure what's going on yet, but hopefully my confusion will clear up by the time i'm finished reading the second volume. I guess i'm mostly confused about Ene. I want to know who she is and what her purpose is.
3.5. Me ha gustado mucho la trama es bastante divertida y los personajes también me han gustado bastante. Pero me gustaría que hablaran más de como son los personajes de carácter y que más adelante nos cuenten más de como funcionan o de donde nacen estas habilidades.
One of my favorite series, the characters are lovable and the fact that the Manga (an adaptation of the lightnovel) wouldn't have been possible without the vocaloid songs (Jin produced) wouldn't exists just gives the entire series another layer of added charm.
This book had a tough act to follow (Your Lie in April). It had a decent start, but then starts telling the same story through different eyes. The characterization is weak; the art is just okay.
Though there's a small amount of action in this one, whenever there was action i was extremely drawn to it. Plus, the wrtiting style of the volume resonates with me alot.
