Then there are the evil ninjas, massive ape, mysterious mole people, giant blob, and countless other daunting (and astonishing) detours along the way to school. Are these excuses really why this student is late? Or is there another explanation that is even more outrageous than the rest? From Davide Cali and Benjamin Chaud, the critically acclaimed author/illustrator team behind I Didn't Do My Homework Because . . . comes a fast-paced, actionpacked, laugh-out-loud story about finding the way to school despite the odds—and the unbelievable oddness!
Davide Calì is a Swiss-born Italian writer of picture books and graphic novels, primarily for children and young adults. He lives in Italy. His work has been published in twenty-five countries and translated into many languages.
Deceptively simple. This sophisticated story reminds me of children's books of the 1960's & 70's-- witty, a little dark humor, starring kids a LOT smarter than adults.
3 stars from Emma. She wished the book was larger, so she could see the illustrations.
This was a very strange book...the only thing I can think of is that the author and illustrator got drunk one night and started telling stories as if they were 9 year old kids living in a surreal French film. To be fair, the author and illustrator are actually French... I'm going to try it out on my kid book club to see if they find it entertaining or inspiring, because if anyone will, it's a group of 7 to 10 year olds who like books.
I need a copy for my classroom. I loved the conflict our main character finds himself in. Very “this is my story and I’m sticking with it. “ and I need a universal gadget belt!
Echt waar?
In the same style as I Didn’t Do My Homework Because . . . (HERE), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to School . . . contains hilarious excuses why this young boy is late for school. Will the teacher believe these excuses any more than she believed why he did not do his homework? Will you believe?
Would you believe the boy missed breakfast because giant ants stole it from him? Would you believe a huge—and I mean HUGE—ape mistook the school bus for a banana? Would you believe the boy meet a girl wearing a red coat and needing help finding her grandmother’s house in the woods? No?
The illustrations are great. The title page shows the first book lying on the floor, open as if the boy had . . . (continue at Kid Lit Reviews) http://kid-lit-reviews.com/2015/03/28...
The main difference I saw in the two books is that this book followed a continuous trail of adventures and calamities that conspired to make the boy late to school whereas the other book contained single phrases that would be funny excuses simply on their own.
The book is very short, but is entertaining and so creative. The illustrations are wacky and really complement each excuse.
We enjoyed both of the books, but I think I prefer the other book better for helping to stimulate spontaneous creativity and witty ideas, which is what I was going for. Our oldest is part of a local high school team for Odyssey of the Mind and they have a Spontaneous Verbal Problem that they must complete during the competition.
I think I just didn't have the right sense of humor for this book. I didn't like it - at all. I thought it was ridiculous without being whimsical. I didn't like the illustration style. Well, I just plain didn't like it. I didn't have it, but I definitely didn't like it.
Mixing family life and fairytale, this book is a comedic story of how a boy became late for school. The rambling nature of the story, with increasingly unbelievable events delaying his commute, depicts children’s storytelling in a way entertaining for both children and adults.
While there were no big issues with this book, there also weren’t any pros for me - just another kids story. There is no diversity in this book, with an entirely white cast of characters.
A boy explains to his teacher why he didn't make it to school on time. Each excuse becomes more astonishing. Will the teacher believe the boys reasons for being late to school, or will she see them as outlandish excuses?
This delightful book will have children laughing-out-loud. Each hilarious excuse becomes harder and harder to believe. The illustrations are imaginative and creative. A fun book for middle grade readers.
