The Psychology of Play

This is a study of play among children and animals. Susanna Millar gives a simple and readable account of present knowledge about games and what causes them, introducing her subject with a review of past opinions about play and the various psychological explanations of it. She includes chapters on cultural variations in play and on the use of play in treatment.

Her main argument, however, lies elsewhere. She relates the play of various animals of different evolutionary development and the games of children, as they alter with age, to modern experimental studies of underlying behavioural mechanisms. As a result she offers a novel definition of styles of play as behaviour forms which look paradoxical but have a variety of biological functions related to childhood development and other specific conditions.

ما هو اللعب؟ هو كل نشاط لا يهدف لضرورة بيولوجية ويمكن الاستغناء عنه دون اضرار بحياة الكائن ضررا عضويا مباشرا.
إذا لماذا نلعب؟ مع أن كلمة لعب هي مرادف لكلمة لهو إلا أن ليس كل اللعب لهوا.
يا لهوي! إيه الكلام ده
إتقل شوية تاخد حاجة نضيفة.

الكتاب عن سيكولوجية اللعب بشكل عام. طبعا قد تتصور مثلي أنه سيتحدث عن الأطفال ولعبهم وطرق لتوجيه اللعب لديهم ليكون لعبا مفيدا لا مدمرا و لا مضيعا للوقت و العمر و القشرة الدماغية للطفل بلا طائل و لكنه للأسف ليس كذلك.

بعد مقدمة شيقة من الناشر و المترجم و المؤلفة تجد نفسك قد علقت في نظريات و تنظيرات و مقارنات و تعريفات و كثيرا من الرغي الممل الذي به كلمة واحدة قد تهمك وسط عشرات السطور و المحبط أن أغلب النظريات تتناول الحيوانات و الحشرات و أحيانا الإنسان من باعتباره من الثدييات.
معلومات كثيرة و نظريات مهمة و لكنها للمتخصصين أو المهتمين بدراسة الموضوع من الناحية العلمية.

خلاصة الموضوع أن اللعب بالنسبة للطفل – و هو ما أركز عليه أنا في المراجعة بغض النظر عن تشعبات الكتاب – هو ضرورة من ضروريات النمو العقلي و الجسمي و النفسي أيضا مهما تنوع هذا اللعب أو تطرف أو بدا في غير محله و هذا الموضوع يحتاج لكتاب أخر منفصل يتناول اللعب عند الأطفال.

The book opens with the author telling us that play has long been regarded as a kind of bucket in which to dump phenomena which are otherwise inexplicable or apparently meaningless. This created in me the false expectation that Susanna Millar would against this advance some theory or explanation of play, but no, she runs with the idea of play as a bucket of inexplicable practises. This immediately drags us deeper into Absurdistan than we might care to go without Cervantes or Larry Sterne. If an activity serves a practical purpose then it can't be play, if it appears to be inexplicable then it must be play. Play in this book is mostly that which can't be explained by any other category of behaviour in 1968. Mostly because a certain degree of educational or learning activity, for animals two and four legged, creeps in to so many activities.

Since 1968, the year this book was first published, a certain amount of thinking and redefinition has occurred perhaps contrary to ones expectations, human life appears to be not altogether thoughtless, just slow so for examples patterns of repetitive behaviour of animals incarcerated in zoos such as pacing backwards and forwards within the enclosure is here regarded as an example of play while I believe it is currently assumed to be a reaction to the stress of imprisonment. Of Piaget, still the dominant voice in her work, charmingly she relates that studies of play for him and herself began by observing their own children, if small children are little scientists, discovering the world through repeated experiment, the habit it appears can rub off on to their parents.

Play is always in a dialectic relationship with the environment, the poorer and less stimulating the environment the poorer the play, whether pigs or people are under consideration, so in a two year observational study the only examples of play recorded in an East African village were a boy making a plough to which he yoked his younger brother (not something which sounds playful for the younger brother, but perhaps after two years the researchers were getting desperate) and another child who made a house out of reeds.

However despite this the text is generally a cheerful read because consideration of play like watching creatures play or animals eat is inherently pleasing.

This is though also a dated book in that the author gives space to discussing Freud and post Freud Sunni- Shia style divisions between his successors before dismissing them all as irrelevant.

Interestingly there is a chapter on play therapy from which it is clear that the author has conducted some successful play therapy yet ultimately she is unsure if or why it might work.

Perhaps the best way to describe this book is that it is like being led round an unfamiliar house only by the light of a single candle which at a certain point goes out. Mildly enjoyable but unilluminating.

اللعب هو النشاط الوحيد الذي لا يهدف الإنسان حين يمارسه إلى غرض محدد سوى المتعة الناتجة عن ذاته،فهو كما عبّر عنه الفيلسوف الفرنسي كانط،سرور وارتياح بلا هدف كالفنّ تمامًا،و متعة خالصة من أي غرض

تبحث الدكتورة سوزانا ميلر سيكولوجية اللعب،او الحالة النفسية العميقة التي تدفع الكائنات الحية للقيام بهذا الفعل،وذلك بعد ان ظلت كلمة اللعب زمنًا طويلاً تعبيرًا يشبه سلة المهملات اللغوية التي نلقى فيها باي سلوك يظهر على أنّه سلوك اختياري،و لايبدو له استعمال واضح من الناحية البيولوجية والاجتماعية

"ميزة الكتاب أنّه موجه للقارئ العادي،فلقد احتفظت مناقشة النظريات والتجارب بأبسط وأقل مستوى من المصطلحات العملية المعقدة التي تُحشى بها بالعادة هذه النوعية من الكتب،،مع وجود المراجع في نهاية الكتاب لمن يبحث عن تفاصيل النقاط الفنّية"

هذا ما تقوله الكاتبة في مقدمتها،،بالرغم من ذلك فقد جاء الكتاب مفككًا،مملًا،وكان يمكن اختصار أكثر من نصفه!

تقسيم الفصول جاء منطقيًا:
مقدمة تاريخية في البداية حول نظريات اللعب،من طاقة زائدة،مرورًا بالنظرية التلخيصية،واللعب بوصفه اتجاهًا

الفصل الثاني يُناقش اللعب من وجهة نظر علم النفس،وتفسيرات التحليل النفسي لهذا الفعل ولقد كان فصلًا ممتازًا

أما الفصل الثالث لعب الحيوانات فكان يبعث على الملل والسأم،فصل بسبعين صفحة تقريبًا يمكن تلخيصه في عشر صفحات او أقل،ولا اعلم هل كان حشوًا مقصودًا من الكاتبة أم أنها ترى بأن شرحها المعمق والمتشعب كان ضروريًا!!

يلي ذلك فصول عن اللعب عند الإنسان،اللعب الاجتماعي..وتأثير الفروق الفردية على اللعب..وكيفية العلاج باللعب

يبقى السؤال الاهم،لماذا نلعب؟!
إن اللعب سلوك ينطوي على تناقض ظاهري،فهو استكشاف لما هو مألوف ومران على ما أصبح تحت سيطرتنا بالفعل،وعدوان ودي،وجنس بلا جماع،واهتياج للاشيء،وسلوك اجتماعي غير محدد بنشاط نوعي مشترك او ببناء اجتماعي،وادعاء  لا يُقصد به الخداع

وكما قال شيللر:"يكون الإنسان إنسانًا حين يلعب!"
عبارة بإمكانها تلخيص الكتاب برمّته

لكن بعض نقاطه تم تجاوزها معرفيًا
