Aproximadamente en las mismas fechas en que escribía sus memorias esta prostituta vienesa, también redactaba las suyas, igualmente apasionantes, la gran cantante wagneriana Wilhelmine Shroeder-Devrient, autora de Memorias de una cantante alemana. Si ésta fue una mujer refinada, culta y rica, aquélla tuvo un origen humilde y fue precisamente gracias a la profesión más antigua del mundo como adquirió modales y conocimientos suficientes como para poder redactar con acierto, ya al final de su vida, este extraordinario testimonio personal, escalofriante por su sinceridad, que entregó a su médico unas semanas antes de someterse a una grave operación. Estas confesiones íntimas de una prostituta no tienen tan sólo el valor testimonial directo de una actividad en y por principio inconfesable, sino también el de ilustrar con todo lujo de detalles la vida amorosa de la sociedad vienesa de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Por eso sus primeros editores alemanes procuraron respetar al máximo el texto original.

150 years ago, Felix Salten, author of Bambi, was born – and apart from bringing one of the most beloved children’s classics into the world, he is also notorious for having written the piece of filth I am reviewing here. What can I say – of course the publisher can try to label this as „an Austrian erotic classic“, "Die Zeit" calls it "world literature", and this certainly is a well-known book, but it remains a fact that the creator of Bambi has written child pornography, not only insinuating, but openly claiming that many children under the age of 10 have sex with each other, and that they enjoy statutory rape. There is also incest (brother and father) and child prostitution, which the children in this novel also enjoy. All of this, presented in the form of a memoir, is thinly veiled as a work portraying social problems among the working class of Vienna, but really, that’s not what it actually does – this is a book about the girlhood of Josephine who, between the ages of 5 and 13, has all kinds of sex with all kinds of people and thinks it’s great, and then starts to work as a prostitute to support her unemployed drunk of a father, and having sex with old men and whipping customers and group sex are apparently also great for a 13-year-old child.
Currently, there is a fair amount of coverage in Austrian and German media about the legacy of Salten, and it is pretty baffling to see the limbo of reporters and experts who try to celebrate his achievement with „Bambi“ while also somehow dealing with „Mutzenbacher“, sometimes with ridiculous and downright embarrassing results. The book was at the center of a seminal ruling of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, now referred to as „The Mutzenbacher Decision“: It maintained that the book does indeed play down and glorify child abuse, that the text violates the dignity of children, that it is harmful to minors. But as lower courts failed to properly weigh the aspect of freedom of art, they were overruled nonetheless. So all in all, it’s pretty hard to just declare Salten to have been a funny eccentric, a libertine. „Mutzenbacher“ is simply filth that exploits children for pornographic purposes, nothing else.
So do yourself a favor and stay away from this story (if you still want to know what the book is all about, there is a free version on Spotify that I listened to). Rather, check out some articles about Salten’s 150th birthday, it’s pretty interesting to see the varying journalistic approaches.

Now I do well realise that both the book description and indeed even a number of so-called German/Austrian literature experts seem rather willing and able to consider and describe Felix Salten's (and yes indeed, the same Felix Salten of Bambi fame) 1906 (and anonymously) published fictional "memoirs" of a fifty year old Viennese prostitute Josefine Mutzenbacher: Die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne von ihr selbst erzählt as somehow being a classic of erotica (of how a young girl of her own volition and desire becomes a high priced courtesan in turn of the century Vienna). However and this however is both heavy and painfully infuriating, there is in my humble opinion NOTHING even remotely erotic and redeemable (or in any manner of literary merit, let alone Josefine Mutzenbacher: Die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne von ihr selbst erzählt being worthy of the appellation of literary "classic") about Josephine Mutzenbacher in a lurid and sexually charged first person narrative (and of course Josefine Mutzenbacher: Die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne von ihr selbst erzählt has actually and indeed been penned by a male author) relating to readers in meticulous and extensively intensive often disgusting detail ALL of her many carnal encounters with diverse Viennese men from the time she is a toddler of three to the age of twelve or so (and indeed, it is also always presented by Josefine Mutzenbacher and of course acting and functioning as author Felix Salten's voice that it is SHE herself who always instigates the sexual dalliances, that even when Josefine is a child of only three years of age, she is basically for the most part very busy seducing the males in her life and in her Viennese neighbourhood, including family members).
And sorry, to and for me, Josefine Mutzenbacher: Die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne von ihr selbst erzählt is therefore simply and yes despicably one hundred percent child pornography, with the above mentioned factoid and truth that it is also always young Josephine who appears and acts as the sexual aggressor, the person who even as a toddler deliberately approaches and actively seduces the neighbourhood men she encounters, at least in my opinion also rendering this piece of early 20th century trash into what I personally would also consider and strongly condemn as both a trivialisation and authorial denial of childhood sexual abuse. For basically, Felix Salten seems with his literary creation of Josephine Mutzenbacher actively and with luridly lewd, sex and sometimes even bondage details generally if not always narrating and depicting herself as the one who even as a very very young girl is not only constantly sexually aroused by men but also the individual who in Josefine Mutzenbacher: Die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne von ihr selbst erzählt always and deliberately pursues and with very much personal intent sexually seduces the latter to strongly insinuate (to and for me) that he, that Felix Salten considers young girls as primarily seductresses and that therefore childhood sexual abuse does not really happen all that much either, as the men who have their sexual encounters with the narrator are obviously and according to Josefine Mutzenbacher: Die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne von ihr selbst erzählt simply and mostly the victims of Josephine's unbridled carnal childhood lust, that even when she is just a toddler, there is nothing even remotely innocent about Josephine Mutzenbacher and by intention about young girls (that young girls are obviously somehow a sexual danger and threat to unfortunate and victimised adult men).

The author of Bambi is a case for not judging the whole person by one act. People are complicated & weird. I read somewhere (Cracked.com?) about this book & tried finding it since I didn't believe what they said was true. It was. This is child porn!!!
On Gutenberg & most sites, this book is only in German. I found a poorly formatted & edited English version & skimmed it. It was simply porn featuring a prepubescent Josephine (8 years old?) screwing just about every male she met (including other children, her father, & a priest) in just about every way imaginable.

Ich wünschte ich könnte diesem Stück Scheiße negative Sterne geben; es wird kaum ein schlimmeres Buch auf dieser Erde geben, ich meine das ernst.
Das ist nichts außer der widerlichen Phantasie eines kranken Mannes, in der er ein Kind(das am Anfang der bestialischen Handlung dieses Buches 3!!! Jahre alt ist) als “Verführerin” darstellt, die sich allen Männern, die ihr in die Quere kommen, hergibt und es genießt.
Unglaublich, was für einen Dreck Leute als “klassische Wienerische Literatur” bezeichnen können.

I feel dirty after reading this book.
It has been quoted so much at me, particularly the character, whos name has become kind of synonymous with whores, at least in Austria, that I felt I had to fill a gap in my knowledge of Viennese fin-de-siecle literature. Particularly since Schnitzler and several of his contemporaries have written amazing psychologically relevant portraits of their world that hide inside erotic novellas.
Little did I know this book was basically just pornography featuring prepubescent children, incest, and have I mentioned the children getting off with adults and men forcing themselves on little girls?
It might be a fascinating portrait of the language and dialect of the time, as several forewords gush about. (There are others and better books for that!) It certainly isn't a realistic portrait of the mores of the time, much less a necessary one. Salten is one sick puppy. The book seems to me the fabrication of a sick mind and I find it deeply disturbing.

Es que, sinceramente, prefiero este tipo de historias más de ficción. De la imaginación y creatividad del escritor.
Josephine no es ni lo primero y carece de lo otro.
Se supone que estas son sus memorias. Se supone que no es una escritora ni nada (no esperaba más). Se supone que solo es una prostituta. Se supone que esto paso por un trabajo de “corrección”.
Pero es tan vulgar, tosco, burdo, que me horrorizo a morir.
Y nada creíble. Quiero pensar que su introducción precoz, precoz a la sexualidad fue inventado.
Decido pensar.

Josephine Mutzenbacher o La historia de la vida de una prostituta vienesa (en alemán: Josefine Mutzenbacher oder Die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne von ihr selbst erzählt) es una novela erótica presumiblemente escrita por Felix Salten o por Ernst Klein publicada por primera vez de forma anónima en Viena, Austria en 1906.
La novela es muy famosa en el mundo de habla alemana, después de haber sido impresa en alemán y en inglés desde hace más de 100 años y vendido más de 3 millones de copias, por lo que es considerada un éxito de ventas en la literatura erótica
La novela ha sido traducida a inglés, francés, portugués, español, italiano, húngaro, hebreo, holandés, japonés, sueco y finlandés, y ha sido objeto de numerosas películas, obras de teatro, parodias, y utilizada en seminarios universitarios de debate.

Felix Salten (registrado al nacer como Siegmund Salzmann) fue un escritor austrohúngaro.
Nació en la ciudad de Pest del Imperio austrohúngaro en el seno de una familia judía. Su padre era Fülöp Salzmann, el dependiente de la oficina de telégrafos de Pest, su madre era Maria Singer. Cuando tenía tres años su familia emigró a Viena (Austria) como ya lo hacían muchos judíos anteriormente al reconocer Viena la ciudadanía completa a los judíos en 1867.
Cuando su padre entró en quiebra, Felix Salten tuvo que dejar la escuela y empezar a trabajar en una agencia de seguros donde empezaría a enviar poemas y revisiones de libros a varias publicaciones.
En 1923 escribió la novela novela Bambi, una vida en el bosque (título original: Bambi. Eine Lebensgeschichte aus dem Walde), que trata sobre la vida de un corzo escrita en 1923.
Se tradujo al inglés en 1928 y en 1933 vendió los derechos de la película a los estudios de Walt Disney por la suma de 5.000 dólares. Disney estrenó su película basada en Bambi en 1942.
Como curiosidad escribiría una secuela basado en el personaje de Bambi titulada Los hijos de Bambi en 1939.
Ahora ya sabes quién era ¿verdad?
Su nombre quedó asociado a libros infantiles, pero se le atribuye la autoria de un libro que mucho más adulto; el de la supuesta autobiografía de la prostituta vienesa Josephine Mutzenbacher.
Al principio los bibliotecarias de la Universidad de Viena consideraron junto a Felix Salten también al autor Ernst Klein o al autor Arthur Schnitzler pero en la actualidad, los críticos, estudiosos, académicos y del Gobierno austriaco designan a Salten como el único autor de la literatura "clásica pornográfica" Josephine Mutzenbacher.
Aunque es cierto que nuevos estudios difieren de esta opinión. Las diferencias de estilo entre las obras atribuidas a Salten y Mutzenbacher no son insignificantes: algunos pasajes, patrones lingüísticos, etc., no encajan bien en su obra conocida y se asemejan más al estilo de Klein.
¿Qué sabemos de Ernst Klein, el posible otro autor?
Ernst Klein (nacido el 15 de abril de 1876 en Viena, Austria-Hungría; fallecido en otoño de 1951 en Nueva York) fue un periodista y escritor austriaco.
Ernst Klein asistió al instituto en Viena, Hamburgo y Bremen. Tras obtener el título de secundaria, estudió Derecho e Historia en Viena y París. En 1898 sirvió como voluntario durante un año en el Regimiento de Infantería Imperial y Real n.º 43 y se convirtió en oficial de reserva. Posteriormente, trabajó como periodista en Viena y comenzó su carrera literaria con la exitosa comedia Die Erziehung zum Don Juan (La educación de Don Juan).
Klein se trasladó de Viena a Berlín, donde trabajó para el Berliner Lokalanzeiger. Durante su estancia en Berlín, escribió bajo seudónimo El escándalo de Graz y otras novelas pornográficas para el editor Willy Schindler. Más recientemente, a raíz de un estudio histórico y estilo métrico, se ha planteado la teoría de que también fue el autor de la novela pornográfica Josefine Mutzenbacher, publicada de forma anónima.
Se han publicado dos secuelas, también escritas de forma anónima, que presentan una continuación de la novela, que sin embargo, generalmente no se atribuyen a ninguno de los dos posibles autores.
La historia de Peperl Mutzenbacher (la segunda parte).
Probablemente la obra de un imitador desconocido que quería aprovechar el éxito de la primera novela. Se publicó en 1911 y adolece del humor de la primera parte, se centra mucho más en la descripción de los actos sexuales, los personajes son repetitivos y están poco desarrollados. A su favor, un final más optimista que la primera parte.
Josefine Mutzenbacher y sus 365 amantes (la tercera parte).
Aún más tardía, aún menos literaria, probablemente puro pastiche / literatura pornográfica de los años 20-30. Su tono es más satírico y escandaloso, casi como una parodia de las “memorias” originales. La premisa —un amante por cada día del año— le sirve de excusa para un desfile de episodios breves, a veces grotescos, sin continuidad narrativa.
Decía el editor de la supuesta autobiografía de Josefine Mutzenbacher:
Josefine Mutzenbacher —en realidad su nombre sonaba un poco distinto — nació el 20 de febrero de 1852 en el suburbio de Hernals de la ciudad de Viena. Ya a temprana edad se halló bajo el control de la policía correccional y ejerció su profesión primero en casas de placer baratas de los barrios periféricos y más tarde al servicio de una alcahueta que abasteció de muchachas al gran mundo durante los años de prosperidad económica y con ocasión de la Exposición Universal de 1873.
En aquella época Josefine desapareció de Viena con un ruso, volviendo al cabo de pocos años con fortuna y ricamente vestida a su ciudad natal donde llevó una pública y notoria existencia de prostituta de la mejor clase hasta el año 1894.
Posteriormente se instaló en una pequeña propiedad cerca de Klagenfurt y pasó allí sus días en soledad, a la que se añadió pronto una enfermedad. Durante el curso de la misma —una afección femenina que acabó con su vida—, Josefine escribió la historia de su juventud.
Algunas semanas antes de someterse a la grave operación cuyas secuelas le, costaron la vida, entregó el manuscrito a su médico. Lo publicamos aquí como un raro documento de franqueza moral una valiosa y peculiar confesión de gran relevancia cultural por su interés para la vida amorosa de la actualidad. En lo esencial las confesiones de Josefine Mutzenbacher apenas han sido retocadas. Sólo han sido corregidas las incorrecciones idiomáticas y los errores estilísticos y sustituidos por otros los nombres de personalidades conocidas a las que Josefine alude en su relato.
Josefine Mutzenbacher murió en un sanatorio el 17 de diciembre de 1904.
Valoración general: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐de 5.
Me ha gustado muchísmo y es una lástima que en la traducción al castellano del alemán austríaco se pierda tantísimo de la gracia del original de principio de siglo.
¿Os imaginais una traducción de una obra escrita en andaluz con todos sus giros y doble sentido al inglés? Perdería el 80% del humor aun siendo una obra fielmente traducida.
A destacar que esta novela no solo se adaptó al cine -siendo la más conocida la interpretada por Patricia Rhomberg bajo las órdenes del director Hans Billian- si no que hubo incluso representaciones teatrales.
La película de 1979 de Billian respeta -dentro de lo que es una película porno- el humor de la novela y tiene un cuidado vestuario y cierto estilo visual. No es chabacana y es divertida. La recomiendo.
Volvamos a la novela.
La novela mezcla tres registros que rara vez convivían en la época y le dan a esta obra un valor añadido al que se le presupone a la lectura de una sola mano:
Retrata la vida de los barrios bajos vieneses con certeza. El lenguaje es vivo, lleno de giros callejeros, ironía y muy de calle.
El sexo se describe con franqueza y humor. Las escenas eróticas están bien integradas en la trama.
Detrás de la voz infantil de Josefine hay una crítica feroz a la hipocresía moral de la Viena burguesa. Podemos discutir si buscar la excitación del lector con personajes preadolescentes es lícito, pero debemos trasladarnos a principios del siglo XX y a su ambigüedad moral.
En fin, es una lástima que la mayoría de vosotros no podáis disfrutar esta novela en su idioma original y que os perdáis un estupenda novela erótica que es un referente indiscutible de la novela erótica al mismo nivel de Historia de O, Delta de Venus, La venus de las pieles o Fanny Hill.

¿Qué sabemos de Ernst Klein, el posible otro autor?
Ernst Klein (nacido el 15 de abril de 1876 en Viena, Austria-Hungría; fallecido en otoño de 1951 en Nueva York) fue un periodista y escritor austriaco.
Ernst Klein asistió al instituto en Viena, Hamburgo y Bremen. Tras obtener el título de secundaria, estudió Derecho e Historia en Viena y París. En 1898 sirvió como voluntario durante un año en el Regimiento de Infantería Imperial y Real n.º 43 y se convirtió en oficial de reserva. Posteriormente, trabajó como periodista en Viena y comenzó su carrera literaria con la exitosa comedia Die Erziehung zum Don Juan (La educación de Don Juan).
Klein se trasladó de Viena a Berlín, donde trabajó para el Berliner Lokalanzeiger. Durante su estancia en Berlín, escribió bajo seudónimo El escándalo de Graz y otras novelas pornográficas para el editor Willy Schindler. Más recientemente, a raíz de un estudio histórico y estilo métrico, se ha planteado la teoría de que también fue el autor de la novela pornográfica Josefine Mutzenbacher, publicada de forma anónima.
Se han publicado dos secuelas, también escritas de forma anónima, que presentan una continuación de la novela, que sin embargo, generalmente no se atribuyen a ninguno de los dos posibles autores.
La historia de Peperl Mutzenbacher (la segunda parte).
Probablemente la obra de un imitador desconocido que quería aprovechar el éxito de la primera novela. Se publicó en 1911 y adolece del humor de la primera parte, se centra mucho más en la descripción de los actos sexuales, los personajes son repetitivos y están poco desarrollados. A su favor, un final más optimista que la primera parte.
Josefine Mutzenbacher y sus 365 amantes (la tercera parte).
Aún más tardía, aún menos literaria, probablemente puro pastiche / literatura pornográfica de los años 20-30. Su tono es más satírico y escandaloso, casi como una parodia de las “memorias” originales. La premisa —un amante por cada día del año— le sirve de excusa para un desfile de episodios breves, a veces grotescos, sin continuidad narrativa.
Decía el editor de la supuesta autobiografía de Josefine Mutzenbacher:
Josefine Mutzenbacher —en realidad su nombre sonaba un poco distinto — nació el 20 de febrero de 1852 en el suburbio de Hernals de la ciudad de Viena. Ya a temprana edad se halló bajo el control de la policía correccional y ejerció su profesión primero en casas de placer baratas de los barrios periféricos y más tarde al servicio de una alcahueta que abasteció de muchachas al gran mundo durante los años de prosperidad económica y con ocasión de la Exposición Universal de 1873.
En aquella época Josefine desapareció de Viena con un ruso, volviendo al cabo de pocos años con fortuna y ricamente vestida a su ciudad natal donde llevó una pública y notoria existencia de prostituta de la mejor clase hasta el año 1894.
Posteriormente se instaló en una pequeña propiedad cerca de Klagenfurt y pasó allí sus días en soledad, a la que se añadió pronto una enfermedad. Durante el curso de la misma —una afección femenina que acabó con su vida—, Josefine escribió la historia de su juventud.
Algunas semanas antes de someterse a la grave operación cuyas secuelas le, costaron la vida, entregó el manuscrito a su médico. Lo publicamos aquí como un raro documento de franqueza moral una valiosa y peculiar confesión de gran relevancia cultural por su interés para la vida amorosa de la actualidad. En lo esencial las confesiones de Josefine Mutzenbacher apenas han sido retocadas. Sólo han sido corregidas las incorrecciones idiomáticas y los errores estilísticos y sustituidos por otros los nombres de personalidades conocidas a las que Josefine alude en su relato.
Josefine Mutzenbacher murió en un sanatorio el 17 de diciembre de 1904.
Valoración general: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐de 5.
Me ha gustado muchísmo y es una lástima que en la traducción al castellano del alemán austríaco se pierda tantísimo de la gracia del original de principio de siglo.
¿Os imaginais una traducción de una obra escrita en andaluz con todos sus giros y doble sentido al inglés? Perdería el 80% del humor aun siendo una obra fielmente traducida.
A destacar que esta novela no solo se adaptó al cine -siendo la más conocida la interpretada por Patricia Rhomberg bajo las órdenes del director Hans Billian- si no que hubo incluso representaciones teatrales.
La película de 1979 de Billian respeta -dentro de lo que es una película porno- el humor de la novela y tiene un cuidado vestuario y cierto estilo visual. No es chabacana y es divertida. La recomiendo.
Volvamos a la novela.
La novela mezcla tres registros que rara vez convivían en la época y le dan a esta obra un valor añadido al que se le presupone a la lectura de una sola mano:
Retrata la vida de los barrios bajos vieneses con certeza. El lenguaje es vivo, lleno de giros callejeros, ironía y muy de calle.
El sexo se describe con franqueza y humor. Las escenas eróticas están bien integradas en la trama.
Detrás de la voz infantil de Josefine hay una crítica feroz a la hipocresía moral de la Viena burguesa. Podemos discutir si buscar la excitación del lector con personajes preadolescentes es lícito, pero debemos trasladarnos a principios del siglo XX y a su ambigüedad moral.
En fin, es una lástima que la mayoría de vosotros no podáis disfrutar esta novela en su idioma original y que os perdáis un estupenda novela erótica que es un referente indiscutible de la novela erótica al mismo nivel de Historia de O, Delta de Venus, La venus de las pieles o Fanny Hill.

I remember how we (a few of my friends and me, all female) would watch the old 'classic' reruns of that 70's movie with Rhomberg when we were very³ younnng. :D
It was plain smutty porn and we would giggle, knowing our parents would give us a good slap if they knew we were secretly watching it.
But this Book? What the actual F*ck did I read here?
Rhomberg was a young woman in the movie (in her late teens, early Twens) whereas in this Book it started as a child, FFS!
At first I didn't really register what was happening, I guess it's because I read it quite fast.
BUT after rereading a few parts from the beginning, I was sure it was the way, that is was.
I am not sure if you can call this Schmutz art, but some people do.
IF I could forget that girl's age range during the Book for a tiny second, there would actually be parts you could laugh at… but Nope, not like that.

Probably trawling through development hell for a few years and trying to line up the right talent, JOHNNY BE GOOD hit the theaters in early 1988, starring some of the big names of teen comedies around the mid decade mark. Seemingly guided by an inexperienced director and an aging script, the high school football flick suffered from indecision as to what kind of movie it wanted to be; RomCom, football fiction, high school coming-of-age movie, or a scathing criticism of the corruption in the once hallowed arena of college football (recruiting). In the same boat as Johnny Walker is JOSEPHINE MUTZENBACHER, the Austrian novel from 1906, where the titular heroine is unsure whether she is good or quite bad, realizing and then using the power that she has newly discovered. Directly impacting the entire narrative, it's not quite clear what JOSEPHINE MUTZENBACHER is supposed to be; erotic fiction, scandalous prose depicting 1900s Vienna, or a caustic indictment of sexual abuse and abhorrent practices in 20th century Europe.
Ruling over nearly fifty-three million subjects and fifteen nations, Emperor Franz Joseph I sat smack dab in the middle in Vienna, the capital and residence of the Habsburg monarchy, a thriving city of nearly two million souls. This amalgamation of cultures and languages saw an influx of immigrants with an plethora of religions and ethnicities, and inevitably conflicts and problems. As social conditions dropped, prostitution was on the rise, with those in dire need open to exploitation by the working conditions of liberalism. This then is the time and place where the book starts, introducing Josephine and her particular social situation and family life, which could possibly have been quite similar in New York City, an ocean away and twice as big, the squalor much worse. The Amazon version of JOSEPHINE MUTZENBACHER mercifully starts the eponymous character out at 19, and swift mental math will reveal what depravity the original, incidentally hailed as a "classic" contains. From teachers, priests, fathers, professionals, salesmen, shop keepers, boarders, soldiers, and just about everyone else does a complete Ivanka Trump and is complicit in the corruption of a minor, venturing deep into what UNDER SIEGE 2 called 'Dark Territory'.
The scandalous depiction of teenage flagrante delicto seems to find new life every so often, as seen by filmed content like KIDS ('95), LOLITA ('62 & '97), THE LOVER ('92), and more recently, EUPHORIA ('19), delivering hypnotic excitement with primitive force and jabbing taboo eroticism. If shock value is what you're looking for, JOSEPHINE MUTZENBACHER is the book that'll do it, for it appears that the corruption of youth and minors finds no end. More than 50% of the story is spent in the most explicit, obscene relations that can be found between a Linzer Torte and the Vienna Opera House, putting the likes of Portnoy, Nin, and Nabokov to great shame. The books subtitle prophecies to chronicle the life of a 1900s worker in the world's oldest profession, yet JOSEPHINE MUTZENBACHER excessively dwells on early experiences that run deep into cringe territory and are nothing but preamble to the illicit professional life. In light of the post-fly-leaf bait and switch, JOSEPHINE MUTZENBACHER's only redeeming aspect is the mind-blowingly endless number of often hilarious alternate names and metaphors for body parts. Reading JOSEPHINE MUTZENBACHER or THE STORY OF A VIENNESE WHORE, AS TOLD BY HERSELF may leave you shocked, titillated, disgusted, fascinated, delighted, or angered, and that is probably what Felix Salten intended. The gentle reader can either finish it or throw it out of the window. Take it or leave it. And as with most things, choose wisely.

While the book is originally written in German, I located a Kindle copy in English.
The setting is Vienna at the end of the 1800s. Attitudes about sexuality were certainly different at that epoch as evidenced by, what is termed today “child prostitution”; however, at that epoch it was legal. Even in the US, children of 13 to 16 were marrying.
I cannot say it’s a compelling story but it is an interesting read : from the point of view of a prostitute in Vienna à la fin du siècle.
Do I recommend this book? Only if the reader is curious about the morés of that era.

Felix Salten's (best known for Bambi: A Life in the Woods ) early foray into comic paedophilia is, by any standards, a disgraceful piece of work. It is also very funny. Many of the episodes bear a close (and I dare say conscious) resemblance to the bawdier examples of medieval fabliaux.
Recommended, with due caution, to those with an interest in the erotic imagination of fin de siècle Vienna.

Opskurna parodija Freudove teorije seksualnosti i satira bečkog društva u vrijeme prve industrijske revolucije. Duhovito i prilično perverzno. Na trenutke šokantno jer fabula prati djetinjstvo kurve i njeno revno otkrivanje seksualnosti u najranijoj dobi. Ima dosta sličnosti s Bambijem, još jednim bestsellerom bečkog pisca i novinara (sektori su mu bili politika i prostitucija) koji nikad nije potvrdio autorstvo nad Jozefinom. Kao što piše prevoditelj Boris Perić u sjajnom eseju na kraju hrvatskog izdanja, oba romana govore o preživljavanju, prvi o preživljavanju u šumi, drugi o preživljavanju u betonskoj džungli. Oba junaka osjećaju snažne nagone koji ih pokreću. Također i Bambiju i Jozefini umire majka što označava prekretnicu u njihovim životima te su prepušteni na brigu strogom ocu kojega se boje.
Jozefina je nekoliko puta zabranjivana zbog detaljnih opisa seksa koje kao 7-godišnjakinja prakticira s bratom, vremešnim podstanarima, susjedima, susjedama, tj. s kim god stigne. Iz današnje perspektive to se čini monstruoznim, no valja uzeti u obzir epohu o kojoj govori i činjenicu da se štošta toga promijenilo od 1906. otkako je objavljena (i prodana u 3 milijuna primjeraka); od kvalitete života i stanovanja, načina na koji promatramo seksualnost do metoda u odgoju.
U Jozefini ima nešto oslobađajuće. O seksu govori kao da je to nešto najnormalnije, najprirodnije i najljepše na svijetu. Ovo nije mračna priča o tome kako je zlostavljana djevojčica postala kurva, već iskrena ispovijest jedne žene koja se ne srami toga tko je bila i što je radila.

The story is told from the point of view of an accomplished aging 50-year-old Viennese courtesan who is looking back upon the sexual escapades she enjoyed during her unbridled youth in Vienna. Contrary to the what the title indicates, almost the entirety of the book takes place when Josephine is between the ages of 5 and12 years old, before she actually becomes a licensed prostitute in the brothels of Vienna. The book begins when she is five years old and ends when she is twelve years old and about to enter professional service in a brothel.
Although the book makes use of many "euphemisms" for human anatomy and sexual behavior that seem quaint today, its content is entirely pornographic. The actual progression of events amounts to little more than a graphic, unapologetic description of the reckless sexuality exhibited by the heroine, all before reaching her 13th year. The style bears more than a passing resemblance to the Marquis de Sade's The 120 Days of Sodom in its unabashed "laundry list" cataloging of all manner of taboo sexual antics from incest, rape and homosexuality to child prostitution, group sex and fellatio.

Found an English version of this on the web. After reading it for a while, I looked up the reviews. I got interested in this book through the films, or one of them at any rate, althoughI do have an interest in erotic literature. The book, as pointed out by several reviewers, is highly problematic in that it deals with sex between adults and children as young as seven or eight years. The films, all of them, present young women "of acceptable age" - unlike the book, they are not "kiddie porn". The book is apparently considered by some to be an erotic masterpiece. I found nothing erotic about it, even when the ages are upgraded mentally to legal age. The sex is presented in detail, but mechanically, there is very little heart here. The book does provide some details about a way of life that may have some historic interest, although such details are lost among the more sexually explicit descriptions - this is the only reason I gave this book two stars instead of one.

Irgendwas war mit Bambi, und da bin ich draufgekommen, dass ich das Bch auch nicht gelesen hatte. Da es bereits bei Projekt Gutenberg frei erhältlich ist, habe ich es als ebook runtergeladen und schnell mal gelesen und eine Bildungslücke gefüllt.
