Christmas Escape

Host for the Holidays: Christmas Escape

Rate this book
Madi is counting on Paris’s reputation as the City of Love. Now she just needs to figure out if it’s old love or new love...

Madi

After two years and zero proposals, my relationship could use a little spark. Paris during the holidays seems like just the ticket—one perfect, final opportunity for my boyfriend to take things to the next level.

The fact that he’s rented me the tiny servant quarters in the apartment of a very good-looking Frenchman is . . . puzzling. And when he asks that Frenchman to take me around the city while he’s busy at work trainings? Color me confused.

Is this some sort of pre-engagement test? If so, I’m not sure I’m doing too hot.

Rémy

Offering to host my friend’s vacation rental means making sure the first review is five solid, sparkling stars. When the guest who shows up is a beautiful American woman, I’m thinking my task might be more enjoyable than I thought. Until I find out she has a boyfriend. Madi deserves to have an amazing time in Paris, though, so I’m more than happy to oblige when the guy asks me to show her the city. It’s cool. I’m cool. This is all for that five-star review…

“It’s not what the path looks like. It’s having someone who’s willing to do the work to clear it with you. Better a dedicated partner on a rough road than someone sleeping at the wheel on a straight stretch.”

Madison ‘Madi’ Allred learns this the hard way! I was so happy to read about someone who knew her worth, stood up for herself, and dealt with mishaps rather than complaining for daysss.

This inspirational book about helping others find their way, the importance of fixing broken relationships, the value of family, and the necessity of boundaries is one you’ll want on your reading list. It’s not overly Christmas-y. I loved learning the French traditions and vocabulary, and was most definitely charmed by Remy Scott.

I’m happy to add this author to my auto-read list.

I can't get enough of this series. An escape to Paris at Christmas? Don't mind if I do.

Madi is ready to explore Paris with her boyfriend, hoping he'll finally pop the big question. But thanks to said boyfriend, instead she finds herself renting a ridiculously small room from a frenchman, Rémy Scott.

Rémy was perfect. Immediately you can feel his gentle, considerate nature. I loved seeing these two unavoidably become closer. Madi really needed someone like Rémy, someone to show encouragement and interest in her love for photography. Their teasing banter, along with Madi continually embarrassing herself, was so great too.

But of course, their blooming attraction is complicated by Madi having a boyfriend. I really loved the respectable boundaries Rémy placed, making sure Madi never felt rushed into anything. Their relationship felt so genuine despite their short time together. And honestly, read it simply for the elevator kiss. So good!

Host for the Holidays is the fun, magical Paris vacation you've always wanted to take but have been too cheap to splurge on. Throw in an absolutely wonderful French (and not to forget..ridiculously attractive) rental host and this is the sweet, accidental roommates romance your holiday tbr needs.

This is Martha's first contemporary romance but I think she didn't show it. This book starts off fast and keeps the humor coming. I went in blind and do not regret it...the meet cute is adorable and comical and really sets the tone for the rest of the story.

This is a book about being in a foreign country for the first time but having a native to show you the magic of Paris. This book is about realizing your worth and not letting people take that from you. Remy is the bookish boyfriend of dreams and is entirely too sweet for his own good.

Great chemistry and banter with a couple fabulous kissing scenes. I love the lack of immature conflict and the communication that seemed entirely authentic to the story and the character arcs. Can't wait to see what Martha does next.

I enjoyed the story, I really did! (I mean I stayed up waaayyy to late to keep reading so obviously it grabbed my attention)

It was an interesting concept for a story! An airB&B host, and guest falling in love in Paris during Christmas. FUN and unique!

Even though Madi’s boyfriend was a bit of a toad, I did not like that she was actively in a relationship with him for a GOOD chunk of the book but was developing strong feelings for Rémy. If they had broken up earlier, like towards the beginning of the book, or the attraction wasn’t quite as strong and was a little more “slow burn” than insta love I think I would’ve enjoyed it a lot more. That really was my biggest hang up!!

The characters were a lot of fun and the story was really well written! I loved all of Madi’s little mishaps. They made me chuckle, and I’m sure would be my life if I went to Paris.

Also!! Umm the nickname “Stars & Stripes”…I swwwoonn!!

There was a lot of character development and great growth for all the characters!

This love-triangle-that-wasn't could have joined the others I don't care for because I cannot stand cheating. Luckily for me, the formulaic love triangle I've grown accustomed to was handled in a different way that had me equal parts relieved and jonesing for some french bread and cheese. And can I just tell you that I want to visit Martha's Paris? The one I've seen is not quite as magical and lovely, but I'll blame the scaffolding and construction that is everywhere right now while they prepare for the Olympics.
Madi hops off a plane at LAX with a dream and a cardigan - nope, scratch that. But now that song is stuck in my head - in Paris and encounters a series of unfortunate events. She has no luggage, the taxi driver ripped her off, and she just threw a shampoo bottle at an interloper who ends up being her Host for the Holidays. Her boyfriend is MIA and every fear is coming to fruition. Remy to the rescue!
I sincerely hope that Martha continues writing in this genre alongside her historicals. The only thing I didn't love was the overabundance of similes - to which a lot of contemporary indie authors us. This sweet romance has a very relatable heroine, forced proximity, and some swoony feels in an elevator. Remy is such a lovable cinnamon roll it's practically a crime.
Thank you to the author for the advanced copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

This one was super cute, but I think the fact that the boyfriend is a lot like my ex gave me a bit of anxiety for Madi 😂

Madi was a tad helpless, but I think I would be the same way in a city where I didn’t spoke the language at all. And EXCUSE ME where can I get myself a Rémy? Please and thank you!

All in all, pretty cute and very swoony.

Cute romcom that had me laughing out loud more than once.

I would have liked for Madi and Josh to have ended their relationship much earlier, i.e. before she arrived in Paris. That would have seemed more realistic. Overall, enjoyable read and one I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

My heart, what a way to spend Christmas in Paris! 😍

Maybe it was the fact that I spent 2 of the last 5 days in a dark room with migraines and a magical Christmas escape to Paris (via a stellar audiobook!) was just the remedy! Someone once said that we tend to love the books we read while sick… it’s quite true.

Martha Keyes writes rom-com gems, and I fell in love with Paris alongside Madi. When I read this two Christmas’s ago, it wasn’t a favourite of mine, BUT it just took me a bit of time to process things (& life at the time). Because it’s the little things in relationships, the gentle support & nudges towards bravery that matter far more than empty promises and grand gestures. Rémy did just that for Madi. 💛

I love Martha Keyes's previous Books, but this was a miss for me. I didn't connect to the characters or the story as much as I would like, a little silly. It wasn't a perfect fit for me but it could be for someone else.

Oh my goodness, this writing was magical!! I absolutely LOVED the Paris setting during Christmastime.

I knew this was the author’s first contemporary book and I think she nailed it. I would happily read more stories set in a modern setting from her easy. Keyes made Paris come alive and these characters had my whole heart.

Remy was absolutely adorable. I was swooned away by his kindness. He had the purest heart and his interactions with Madi were pure. They had chemistry from the beginning and I loved reading about them exploring Paris and falling in love. I think there was a great balance of plot and Christmas stuff that is exactly what I’m looking for in a holiday read.

I do wish the boyfriend to ex-boyfriend plot line wasn’t around as long as it was. And I did think it showed up at a few inopportune times.

Otherwise, great book. Can’t wait for more.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Holiday Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses

Martha Keyes' debut into the Rom Com world could not have been any more glorieux, splendide, or magnifique. This is Rom Com at it's BEST!!!

If you've ever been obsessed with Paris (which is all of us, just admit it now) this is a MUST READ. Especially if you took French as a foreign language...I dare you not to laugh out loud throughout the entirety of this story.

Remy is the perfect Rom Com hero! Swoony, sweet, debonair and perfectly French in all things. His nickname for Madi was superbe. Two thumbs way up for all the cleverness Keyes put into this book! By the end you will definitely be #teamremy

Madi...adorable. You will be cheering for her from the first page and every mishap that follows her. I love that she owns who she is and doesn't need to be anything more than what she is. I loved her quirks and I loved her excitement that spilled from the pages.

In short, this is a très bon Rom Com and I hope we see more of this genre from this author because it's a Rom Com I can get behind 100%

”Life’s a journey, and sometimes all we get to decide is who we take with us and for how long. But we’re never back at square one, even if it seems like it… It’s not what the path looks like. It’s having someone who’s willing to do the work to clear it with you. Better a dedicated partner on a rough road than someone sleeping at the wheel on a straight stretch.” 💭

✿•*`¨*`•.¸✯ This is the second book I’m reading in this series and I loved reading it as much as the first installment! This story follows Madi, who is anticipating a proposal from her boyfriend in Paris but winds up rooming in a tiny apartment with the temporary Airbnb host, Rémy 🤭 the setting in France coupled with the sightseeing Rémy and Madi end up going through made for a super romantic and heartwarming romance 💝

✿•*`¨*`•.¸✯ Madison “Madi” Allred has been with her boyfriend, Josh, for two years but longs for the way their relationship used to be exciting and the effort that he used to put in to them. Despite her loved ones not approving of their relationship, Madi chooses to see the best in Josh even though he’s proven time and time again that he will let her down. I liked that she eventually learns to stand up for herself and to want more out of life based on actions done for her instead of meaningless promises that will be broken. She learns to confront her fears of claustrophobia and touring in a foreign country on her own, and it was so satisfying to see her grow as her own person both in her passion for photography and her own self-worth both in and out of a relationship 💜

✿•*`¨*`•.¸✯ Rémy Scott is a very dedicated hard worker and strives to please his French mother, but he also wishes to make his American father proud and to strengthen their relationship together. He, too, also goes through his own journey of self-discovery of chasing his passions of learning English and staying at his dream job even though it’s initially nerve-wracking and intimidating for him to come to terms with. He’s also selfless and helping his friend with his first Airbnb booking and hosting their first guest, Madi. Even as Rémy starts to find himself attracted to her, he still thinks about her well-being and respects her relationship to Josh. Towards the end, he learns to avoid making assumptions that get in the way of him going after what he truly wants 📝

✿•*`¨*`•.¸✯ Madi and Rémy’s relationship started out rocky in the beginning, but it was so wholesome watching them bond together and get closer. I loved that they were both very thoughtful with each other and doing the little things that others may not see or value the gesture as much as they do. I think it was so cute reading about Rémy taking Madi grocery shopping in France and taking the subway together, plus the elevator scenes and the Eiffel Tower outing! I liked the overall message that their relationship brought in that the hard path is worth taking more than the easy path because a partner willing to go through obstacles with you unconditionally is better than one who only hopes for the easy way out. They were really compatible with each other and just overall adorable in how they explored Paris together and parts of themselves they didn’t often show to others ✨

✿•*`¨*`•.¸✯ I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a good forced proximity and holiday travel romance! 💘 Madi and Rémy’s story was just as adorable as Claire and Liam’s story in the first book. I’m looking forward to reading the third story in the series 🥰

What to expect:
- Holiday romance 🎄
- Forced proximity
- Strangers to friends to lovers
- Photographer FMC x English teacher MMC 📷📔
- American FMC x French-American MMC 🇺🇸🇫🇷
- Paris, France setting 🏙️
- Dual POV written in past tense

Initial thoughts:
- the first half was better than the second half
- bc madi and josh were together for 48% of the book, rémy and her had a super insta-love story
- i wish josh and madi had broken up more towards the beginning, so it was more slow burn
- rémy was adorable!
- i loved the paris setting, but i wish it had been more christmas-y bc that’s what i signed up for
- josh is a butt
- i’m so proud of madi for facing her fears
- siena is me in a book character
- i liked the writing style, but i wish the characters had had more flaws—they didn’t seem quite realistic
- despite my minor issues with this book, i totally lost track of the time while reading it
- this was so cute and i’ll definitely read it again!

"Just say what we wanted and what we felt."

I love the thought from Rémy that says, "We both could have avoided all that if one of us had been brave enough to just say what we wanted and what we felt."
To many characters in books, and the real world lack the courage to have the difficult conversations. I love a story that shows the benefits of showing some humility.

This is my new favorite book by this author, and maybe anyone! I connected with the klutziness and swooned with the simple touches. Rémy is definitely my new book boyfriend.
This book is definitely worthy of a repeat read!

I can’t get enough of this series, it’s just so cute and fluffy. I really loved Madi and Remy as characters and I loved their relationship. This was a super cute romance.

- I liked that the FMC acted instead of being acted upon. I LOVED that she made an important decision right at the point that she did. You go, girl!
- no cheating (I was worried with the blurb, so rest assured)
- MMC was awesome
- dual perspective didn’t detract from the story too much
- good chemistry

Aside: Loved that the tourist-of-France wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine. It showed the real aspects (scamming taxi drivers, odd accommodations, disdainful locals, crowded metros, etc) along with the exotic excitement and allure of Paris.

Content- clean
Narrator- good except that I couldn’t really tell the difference between the FMC and the MMC, but context made it obvious. Also, I couldn’t tell when she was thinking or actually saying something out loud, but that wasn’t that big of a deal.

Wow, what a great read! This was the kind that I got so absorbed in, that when I finally "came up for air" and checked the time I found out I was late for bedtime by a half hour. Haha! I was stunned. I had no recollection of time passing at all!

Remy and Madi were such lovable characters and their interactions were so fun and sweet. I've never been really interested in Paris, but this book was written so well and painted such a picture of the City of Love that it has this homebody actually thinking one day if she got brave enough for international travel again, Paris might be a place to visit.

I could totally relate with Madi and the hiccups she encountered when she first arrived in Paris. Totally felt like a Baker vacation. I so enjoyed the laughter this story provided as well. Sometimes a lighthearted romance is just the medicine.

I certainly missed the Christian perspective, as it was clearly absent, but it was a clean, captivating read that gave me all the good, warm feels of a Christmas romance. This one ranks up there with Faking Christmas by Cindy Steele, also in the same series, which I read last year.

Now onto the next Christmas escape. :)

10000/10!!!! I CAN'T EVEN WITH THIS BOOK!!!!! He's French, has a nickname for her, and has loved her since he saw her. He is also super sweet and very very very adorable! She's quirky and funny and a great photographer. It's duel POV, which is incredible. Their love is incredible and did I mention it's in PARIS?!?! This book has me giggling and kicking my feet and (especially at the epilogue) jumping up and down like a complete weirdo. I definitely recommend to anyone. I think this might be one of my new Top 10 books.

While I enjoyed the story and the Paris setting, I would say that this has been my least favorite installment in the Christmas Escape series. It felt a bit too long and draggy in spots, but I did really enjoy the connection between Madi and Remy and all the sightseeing they did around Paris. It definitely made me want to visit Paris during the holiday season.

(4.5 stars) - When the City of Love hates you...

Having spent time in Europe, including France, I would have killed Josh for what he did if I was Madi. As the story very realistically illustrates, there's not just a language barrier but a culture barrier, & when you're stuck dealing with it by yourself, you're extremely vulnerable.

While the story arguably follows some predictable plot lines, it's very well done. I don't generally like a female main character who is in a doormat kind of relationship with another guy, but the author brings us in as both Madi & Rémy are at a critical point in their lives, & the journey - with just a few minor spots that felt a little laggy - is engaging as well as frequently fun.

I particularly liked how the author had moments where the characters talk themselves out of making knee-jerk decisions based on previous mistakes.

I’m loving these books in the Christmas Escape series. You’re going to want to read them all!

This book features Madi. She’s headed to Paris to have a wonderful Christmas with her boyfriend, Josh. But nothing goes as she plans. She loses her suitcase. And the AirBNB that Josh booked for her was not at all what she expected. I loved how Madi kept saying that Paris hated her. And she really had the worst luck ever. I loved that she had an eye opening experience on her trip. And that she and Remy kept getting thrown together.

Remy was the perfect host for Madi. I loved that he cared way more about her than he did any five-star review. He is the kind of guy to drop his normal life and help his friend out by hosting the AirBNB. And he did all kinds of things for Madi. I loved the way he cared for his mom. The way he teased Madi about her being from the US made me smile every time. I loved so many things about him.

This book made me smile from beginning to end. I loved it!
