There is no one to trust in Nancy Ann Healy’s thrilling new novel, Betrayal. FBI agent Alex Toles is relieved to return to work at the NSA after a frightening on-the-job ordeal. Her life partner, Cassidy O’Brien, and Cassidy’s seven-year-old son, have also been instrumental in healing Alex’s wounds. But their peace is short-lived when they discover that their good friend—and President of the United States—John Merrow, has been assassinated. Little do they know, however, that President Merrow’s death is just the beginning. Even as Alex and Cassidy are forced to confront the loss of their friend and the ramifications that will have on the global stage, they must cope with problems much closer to home. Battling intolerance over the nature of their romantic relationship and long-hidden secrets within their families, Alex and Cassidy must confront the truth of their pasts in order to build the future they seek. On top of it all, they must confront a conspiracy that spans multiple governments, intelligence agencies, diplomatic services, and international corporations if they are to finally discover the truth about the mysterious group known as the Collaborative—and about themselves.
Nancy Ann Healy is a woman of many talents and interests. She has worked as everything from a bookstore manager to a standup comedian, and she enjoys movies, theater, and karaoke in her free time. Healy is happily married to her wife, Melissa. Together they have a son, Chris, and two dogs, Maggie and Sydney Bristow. The family currently lives in Connecticut, where Healy is completing her studies in social justice through Arizona State University and working on her second novel.
First book I described as brilliant. This book I'll describe as exceptionally brilliant. The author does not miss a beat. It's intriguing, it's mysterious, it's complicated, and it has just enough love and humour to make the whole thing realistic. If it were a movie you would be sitting on the edge of your seat. I can't wait for number three. I love it. Thanks Nancy for writing it.
Bring on book three. This is getting good. I like the intrigue. There are quite a few characters to keep track of. Claire, what a piece of work. She really helps you understand the statement, with Claire as a friend, who needs any enemies.
3.75 stars, definitely an interesting read, but it had been a while since reading the first book in the series. the action was fast, hard to keep straight all the villains, since everyone is a spook of some sort.
The fact that there are so many characters overwhelm me but the family aspect makes me happy.
This seems the most romantic and least chaotic for me because the MCs were both kind of home / leave most of it.
The epilogue kind of wrecks me. I don’t trust that anyone is really alive or really dead. Really good or really evil. Even from book 1.
I am also not a series person. Anything more than 5 overwhelms me. Fortunately, I like both MCs - they are kind of too good to be true (as are the kids). I don’t mind reading more but I don’t have the audible credits to do anything but this series for the next year.
Much love to the author. I wouldn’t spend a year’s credit if she wasn’t a fabulous author.
I just love this series and I'm so glad I continue onto book 3. All the characters are wonderful but I hope Chris and Claire gets what's coming to them.
Intrigue, espionage, double and triple agents … all with a beautiful sapphic relationship in the middle. This book and #1 in the series were just engaging enough to keep it interesting. Candidly the series could probably be made into a TV show or movie. So obviously there were aspects that I really liked.
So why not five stars? It really came down to two things. One is the main female character was supposed to have all these special skills but we never get a chance to see her use them. So there’s a promise, but it never really followed through. And then the second reason was just pace. I tend to like books that move faster and the overall pace of number one and number two was just too slow for me. So great potential … I haven’t decided if I’m going to read number three or not yet.
In terms of spice? Very low. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing since it is an action book and series, but it was pretty mild.
So yes - worth the read! Just set your expectations.
I have to admit I don't read many political thrillers so my brain is having a hard time keeping up with all the political characters in this spine tingling suspense! In this book two, the president is assassinated and Alex is back with the NSA. The intrigue is super because I cannot figure out the good guys from the bad. I sure hope I do by the end of this series! Book three cannot come soon enough!
What I do know is Alex and Cassidy have a very special love for each other and family, and Nancy Ann Healy knows how to make children a vital part of the connection. I love little Dylan and I have never read anything more touching than the part he played in the wedding. What a bonus for the reader!
This is a very well written continuation of Alex and Cassidy's love story. But there is so much more to this book than just a tale about finding love. There are hidden agendas, intrigue, espionage, betrayal, loss, and much more. But most of all, this is the story of a love that most people dream of but never find. After only two books, this is a series I'm already heavily invested in. Be sure to add this book to your must-read list.
As I said before I’ve only just started reading this set of books after reading all the By Design series so far… Even though I have ideas of what’s in store for A&C it’s still exciting. I kinda just want them to have a bit of boring for a while as well, the things this family has been through in 2 books is just…wow Yeah it’s a book and can be dramatic at times but it’s also really really good. Ok onto book 3…
These early A&C stories have a lot going on. There’s quite a bit of jumping around to a bunch of different characters so it’s a bit hard to keep up with who’s who. I love the A&C crossovers with Candace and Jameson, so I’m glad to back up and learn more about Alex, Cassidy and the rest of the crew. At times this storyline reminds me of something akin to The Black List, which was an excellent series.
I liked the story, and the romance was good, but I found the dialogue clumsy and tiresome sometimes. There are numerous conversations where characters do a lot of talking without really saying anything, and it wore on my nerves after a while. I think "Spit it out already!" could be a catchphrase in this book.
Congratulations to the author Nancy Healey - this series is the best spy, political conspiracies & crime thriller I have ever read - and I have read many. Brilliantly woven together with a beautiful WLW romance, I highly recommend the first two Novels & am excited to fead the rest...
I am in LOVE with this series. The books are part mystery, intrigue, spy thriller and love story. They are so well written and the dialogue, what can I say when the author allows you to finish the characters sentences as you know them so well. Nancy Ann Healy takes her time to fully flesh out each main character. You become enmeshed in their lives. There is a lot of intense action and thrilling rides in the series. As I am writing this my other hand is reaching for the next book in this series. You cannot go wrong picking up this book.
I think that I enjoyed this one as much as I did the first book. There were intricate connections between many of the characters, and it's still a bit difficult to figure out if the bad guys are the true ones, or not. I had a significant issue with the overuse of "the agent" and "the teacher" for Alex and Cassidy, respectively, though.
As we dig deeper in the lives of Alex and Cassidy, we uncover secrets and lies. But more importantly there is love, laughter and family. Nancy Ann Healy writes a compelling series that you won't want to put down from the first page. I look forward to the next book in the series.
This was better than the first book with less spelling and wrong names being used. The love affair is still going strong and ois told in a very sensitive manner and the geo-political aspects are ramped up All round a very good book..........so lost in iot that I had not realised I was all but finished before it happened!
The President has been assassinated and Alex is back at her job at the NSA. Alex and Cassidy are determined to make their relationship work and Dylan worships Alex. The conspiracies are national and international, corporate and governmental, among families and enemies. Exciting and fast paced this series is top notch. Great audible series available.
Enjoyed both books - well done in the romance department- might have done with a bit less “my lover” talk every other conversation but Healy does build a perfect pair of very close loving friends-something to admire and hope for in all relationships regardless of gender.
Domestic lesbians! + well written dramatic suspense. This is a book that got the review it did from me because it’s adorable all the way through and still has me hooked. It’s a sweet, comforting, and reliable book to reread. I didn’t think I’d still be invested in Cassidy and Alex’s story but i totally am and can’t wait to continue the series
Dang! Betrayal is correct, there’s so much double crossing, you don’t know who’s winning m which side or if on both and who’s agenda they are fighting for. Loving every bit of it and Dylan’s present… I was crying
This book is a continuation of one of the most romantic and intriguing stories I have ever had the fortune to read. Hard to put the book down and cannot wait for the next chapter in the lives of Slid and Cassidy.
