If you'd have told me a week ago that I'd be a billionaire's property...
Confident. Brilliant. Rich. Devastatingly handsome. Aiden Manning seemed to have it all. As naïve as I was, when he seemed interested in me, I fell head over heels immediately.
But Aiden Manning's life held a dark side, one that he needed to hide at any cost. That's where I would come in. My trusting nature had caused me to owe money to the wrong people, and Aiden was right there and ready to help, if only I'd help him out as well. Just one signature on a piece of paper, and suddenly I was bound to him. The ground rules I had laid out at the beginning quickly melted away, and I found myself being drawn deeper and deeper into Aiden's life.
However, someone couldn't handle that. An even more powerful figure in Aiden's life would stop at nothing to break the two of us apart. It soon became clear that I might have to sacrifice everything I had to keep the two of us together.

MY REVIEW HAS A FEW MINOR SPOILERS - SO PLEASE STOP READING HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM.
I've read a number of books about rich playboys hiring girls to pretend to be their girlfriend and thought I'd give this book a chance thinking it was different. The only thing that I could really tell was different was that Aiden wasn't really a playboy. He was a workaholic with a damaged relationship with his father trying to make good decisions for their company to change its image. I genuinely liked his character and thought he was a great guy. He's a loner who stays to himself and is actually the only reason I gave this book a 3 star ranking and not a 1 star.
Gwen is one of the worst lead female characters I've encountered. We meet her as she arrives home to discover that her roommate has been stealing the rent money and has moved out leaving her to deal with an eviction notice. Gwen's best friend Beatrice talks Gwen into accompanying her to a party that night where Gwen meets Aidan for the first time. The next day, Gwen runs into Aidan again at Starbucks where they talk. Upon hearing her money problems, he offers her the solution of signing a contract with him agreeing to accept money to pretend to be his girlfriend. She creates a scene accusing him of calling her a whore and storms off. Dramatic much! I had to skim over much of her inner dialogue where she tries to figure out what shes going to do - I'm talking pages and pages of the same stuff. Ultimately, she finally tracks Aidan down and agrees to his terms. Aidan's father however, doesn't like her and will stop at nothing to get her out of his son's life.
More than once, Gwen throws a fit similar to one you'd expect from a teenager. She's selfish, juvenile and just plain hateful. She constantly makes snide remarks to Aidan that are just not necessary. Gwen knows the terms of the contract and demanded a number of the conditions contained within, yet she gets mad and pouts when Aidan tells her she's not his type and doesn't try to have sex with her. She believes he's attracted to her, therefore he's wrong for not acting on it. Seriously! Eventually, he does, but I personally couldn't understand why.
Overall, I just couldn't connect with Gwen no matter how hard I tried - and I did try. She's annoying and since the entire book is told from her POV, there is no escaping it. I didn't really care for her best friend Beatrice either. This book does have a happy ending and it's not a cliffhanger. As indicated in the reviews, other people did enjoy the book - it just wasn't one I personally would ever read again or recommend; especially when there are other books out there similar to this one that are much better.
Okay, so I'm finish with this because I got bored.
Insta love from the heroin part. She said things like no PDA etc etc while she's playing the pretend girlfriend for the famous billionaire Aiden Manning. But, after two days of becoming the fake couple she already have a sexual fantasies about him and said that he like him and yada yada. Her feelings for Aiden develop in just two days! In fact the first day, when she went to see Aiden she already feel jealous of the waitress who only did her job of taking their orders. I mean, the heck?! already being possessive?
And this story is just so annoying with Gwen's best friend, Beatrice. I can't stand her. Besides, I'm not really pulled into this while reading so nope totally a bummer. This one.
This book made absolutely no sense. The book is about a father and son that has a strained relationship because when the son was born it caused the mother to die thus the bad relationship. The father is staging press conferences, paparazzi to maybe embarrass the son. I don't know. It didn't make sense. The girl. I didn't like at all her internal monologues dragged on. I had to stop reading.
DNF at 35%/Put on Hold I could not connect. I think this would have been better if written in first person. I felt like the story was being told to me instead of allowing me to come up with my own assumptions and feelings. I loved the premise of this book, but I don't feel the execution was good.
This book had potential but fell flat. Shortly after starting it I knew it was going to be a long read - the characters weren't that well developed, the 'heroine' was awful and didn't garner any sympathy from me, and I didn't really like the writing style.
About a billionaire who hires a college student to play his girlfriend for a set amount of money. His father finds out and sets out to destroy the relationship but the two have already fell for each other.
Gwen comes home to a surprise she never expected. Her roommate has moved out and left her to come up with $5000 for rent by the end of the week or be evicted. Gwen conspires with her best friend Beatrice to help her find a way out. Beatrice doesn’t always come up with the best ideas and the one she has in store for Gwen isn’t much better. Beatrice in-list Gwen’s help as her wingman in hopes that will get Gwen’s mind off her troubles. While Beatrice was on a mission to get 5 rich guys phone numbers, Gwen was too busy worrying about her own problems. She stumbles on Aiden Manning while looking for the bathroom and she feels an instant attraction to him. Beatrice stumbles upon Gwen and Aiden as they are just starting to get to know each other and insist that she comes back to the party. She warns Gwen to stay away from Aiden but doesn’t give her a good reason as to why she should.
Aiden is a man who is trying to break free from his father. He wants to be the man he thinks his father should’ve been. Aiden’s father Henry blames his son for things that happened in the past and test him regularly to see if he can keep his son under his control.
When Aiden runs into Gwen an idea to help them both out comes from Aiden but Gwen resist it. After finding out she has no other choice she tracks Aiden down and asks him if the offer still stands. Aiden needs Gwen’s help just as much as she needs his. The two embark on a series of challenges Henry puts in front of them to tear them apart.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
I like how this book took an everyday problem and made it real. A chance meeting can always happen and Gwen is a character I can relate to as it’s not easy going to college and trying to make it on your own without your parents help. Aiden is a guy who may have come from a rich up bringing but he has morels and values that is true to the real world. Unlike his son, Henry is a true businessman looking out for his bottom line and will do anything to make a profit. The relationship dynamic between Gwen and Aiden wasn’t what I expected at first but as I got to know the two I became more interested and invested into the book. As the story line went on and I found myself wanting to know what was the next trick or stunt Henry was going to play on them. I like how the book all came together and how the relationship came together with every character in the book. This is a book I will definitely recommend to my friends and fellow readers. In reading The Pretend Girlfriend I have now become a fan of Lucy Lambert’s writing and I’m looking forward to read her other books.
This book was good and had a really interesting storyline. It was sweet, sexy, funny, angsty, and full of drama. I will say that this is a typical rich guy hires girl and then ends up falling for her in the end but does offer a few twists. There was also a nice change of pace with the hero, Aiden. This was a fast read that I read in one sitting.
This is the story of Gwen and Aiden. Gwen is having shit luck and is desperate need of help and money. When she meets a mysterious man and then has another chance encounter with him, a proposition is made that will benefit both Aiden and Gwen. He needs a girlfriend and she needs money. So, what starts out as an arrangement turns into something more as Gwen and Aiden get closer than expected and feelings get involved.
But as with most love stories, they will face ups and downs. People will try to tear then apart and obstacles will be put on the way. Will Gwen and Aiden get a happy ending?
I liked both of the characters. There were times when I wanted to strangle Gwen. I loved Aiden. I will have to say he really made this book. He wasn't a man whore like most playboys. I liked them together. They definitely had chemistry and I liked the slow build up. Overall, an enjoyable read.
I got this book free on Amazon. As excited as I was about it [I love free books] I've been left disappointed at the end of the book.
Gwen is nice, nicely written. Sometimes she steps out of hand, but all in all she's someone you like to read about, even though sometimes you just want to kill her and keep your smile on.
But when I think about Aiden! Such a great, amazing name, yet such a shallow character. He does not have anything. He wants to play the role of the leading male, the alpha dude that has everything he wants, yet he's like the little scared mouse that is afraid the masters will walk back home.
Even Gwen has more character than he does. He's always saying <<'Oh..'>>, what is that even supposed to mean? Just that? And he's always led to the obvious truth by Gwen. He's so childish and always saying that 'I don't like you, please go away, but I want you to be my pretended girlfriend even though I definitely don't like you.'
He was supposed to be something else, yet he become something else but that. He's having a major role in this book, yet his presence is barely felt. I think I've got more vibes from Henry than from Aiden, for G's Sake!
I give it three stars because B made me laugh so hard. I give it three stars because anyone could be in Gwen's situation and not have that much luck.
This is the first book that I have actually bought from this author. For some reason I picked it up because the book intrigued me. It is not an eye catcher by far but it is a great summer read.
Aiden and Gwen's journey does not start off as the A typical book. Gwen has a friend that likes to party all the time for sure and Gwen is more laid back. Aiden and Gwen only really meet once before the intrigue begins. He doesn't like her and she is up for the challenge that takes this book on a new level in itself.
In order to get what I just wrote please know this. This author does not follow any kind of typical books with her writing she gives us a look of a different kind of spin in this book. She takes it one step further and grabs the reader in. It's like your evading a love that has just begun but Aiden doesn't see it till Gwen pushes and pushes that button. Sort of like an everyday romance.
You really need to pick up this book and take the journey as I did with Gwen and Aiden.
I hope you enjoy this book just as much as I did. Happy Reading.
I chose this book to read because I liked the cover but also because I liked the book summary. I found the book summary a bit misleading as well.
I was disappointed with the book overall. The storyline was simple but I had a really difficult time relating to the characters. The characters interact but their complexities which are identified in the story are not developed. I am not going to give away Aiden's history (the main male character) but there are very few scenes about how and why he is the way he is. I know there is one major development but it still does not demonstrate how he became who he did. And all the stuff that his father sets into motion regarding the relationship between Aiden and Gwen -- really I am not sure it is all that believable. Now let me move along to Gwen and Beatrice the two main female leads. Beatrice is a bit wacky but you don't know why she is how she is. Gwen, well besides her parents divorce and falling for Aiden you don't learn much about her character either. So you are reading a full length story which could have been injected with many more twists and interesting facets. But it wasn't.
Gwen has had the day from hell all she wants to do is take her soaking wet clothes off get in the sofa and close her eyes but Gwen has a letter with big ugly writing on it URGENT. Aiden Manning hates these parties they really wasn't his scene he was left sitting at the bar nursing his drink.Aiden was the youngest executive his company had ever had and people thought they knew Aiden the man who kept himself to himself but you can never know someone truly unless they want you too know them. I enjoyed this book and it was an easy read some bits did feel a bit dragged out and my mind started to wonder and I felt myself wanting to skim pages. Lucy has done a good job at getting the reader to know the characters and too realise although Aiden could come across quite grumpy and pushy that he was hiding something and I found myself more feeling sorry for him.where as Gwens character I found a little bit too unsure if herself decision wise but towards the end Gwen seems to have sorted that out. All In all I have rated this a 3 star read and some parts were enjoyable maybe just a little dragged out.
The overall story line was good and it kept my attention. It started out very strong, but about half way through started to slow and the end was so rushed and tied in a pretty bow that I felt dumbfounded by it all.
I wish there had been just a bit more character development for the characters. Gwen came off pretty lazy. I don't really see the attraction that Aiden has for her. Aiden needed more back-story to explain why he is the way he is. After growing up with a father like that how did he end up with morals and good intentions. The biggest question of all was WHY did he need a pretend girlfriend, yeah image yada yada, but why did his dad have such a problem with it? I just didn't get that at all, why the hype over something so insignificant. The entire book is told from Gwen's POV, maybe if we would have gotten a glimpse from Aiden I would have understood him better.
I didn't really care for Beatrice, she came of as a self absorbed alcoholic really. I don't see why Gwen is so hooked on having her as a friend.
This book does have a happy ending and it's not a cliffhanger...that is definitely a plus in today's habit of books released in sections.
Aiden wants to improve the reputation of the family company. His father doesn't. There's a few family issues between them too. Aiden also wants to improve his appearance and what better way to do that than to start off with a girlfriend. So, after meeting Gwen, he hires her to be his pretend girlfriend. If it wasn't for his meddling father, all would be great. His father does nothing but try to break up this sham of a relationship.
The first half of the book was NOT boring but it did have too much filler story. Aiden is a strange character. Once he allowed Gwen to know his true feelings, a little more than halfway through the book, he was a completely different man. Before, he was quiet and reserved with closed off feelings. After, it was like opening a new book with a different male lead character. He laughed, joked, and he even became sexier with a body he'd been hiding under all those suits. This story is definitely good but I struggled a bit in the beginning. Now, I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
Originally reviewed for welovekink(dot)com I was not compensated for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed is my own.
Not a bad story. The heroine in this story had no confidence in herself and jumped to conclusions way to much. She was supposed to be in college but didn't seem to worry about going to classes. He was supposed to work at his father's company, but didn't seem to have to go into the office. I hate the the author solved all the problems by killing off his father. If the father had been in such a bad accident that he had to have emergency surgery he would not have been awake to talk to his son right after they got him to the ICU. They were many parts I skipped over including the sex. They just didn't connect with me.
The usual rich misunderstood fellow, Mr. Aiden Manning with a poor nerdy college girl who sets up an 'arranged marriage of convenience' type romance so he can show up the world and his evil rich father. The usual happens with not much originality, but if you like this type of plot device then you'll like this story because it is written and edited well. I just didn't get into the folks, except the very excellent best girlfriend and the little middle name enigma which was cute. 330 pages and kindle freebie 2 stars
I have mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed the story very much.
The beginning of the book was excellent. There were a lot of interesting twists and turns. They were complex and fun to learn about. There were multiple different relationships that you became involved with. Not only was it a love story but also a story about friendship and family. I was excited by the mystery of it all.
But by the end it was a little slow and then everything happened all at once. It seemed rushed.
I enjoyed the Traverse trials and tribulations of Gwen and Aidan. Although at times his father became too predictable. Gwen's friend "B" kept Gwen from being her own worst enemy. I sometimes wanted to be the parent and tell Gwen she needed to count her blessings instead of her problems. Gwen and Aidan will be fine as long as they can learn to shut the rest of the world out.
While this was a great story with good characters, the story was a little too drawn out for my tastes. The saving grace was the fact that the story line was so compelling, I couldn't have put this book down, even if I wanted to. Aiden and Gwen's story was quite enchanting. Just keep in mind that this story continues in the second book, The Pretend Fiancé!
This book started out great, the romance between Aiden and Gwen was electric and really fired up. His father throws the spanner in the works knowing that the duo are faking their relationship. The story gets a little drawn out but is neatly finished. This book reminds me why I should never read the tabloids.
It Started out good but towards the middle it started to drag. There were lots of secrets but the characters had no depth. This love story had very little intimacies in fact, none till three quarters of the book. It's an ok read.
Its about a billionaire who pays a desperate student to be his girlfriend. Its you typical love story, rich guy poor girl story. I rolled my eyes so much it's a wonder they do not hurt. The start was good but then as it progressed it started to get annoying. These words.. Rubber band legs! Urgh!
Gwen is having financial problems, so she reluctantly accepts a contract from rich business tycoon Aiden Manning to pretend to be his girlfriend. He needs a girlfriend to get his father off his back so he can begin running the family company the way he sees fit. Only his father, Henry, doesn't buy the relationship, finds out about the contract and does everything he can to make life harder for Aiden - including sicking the paparazzi on him. Gwen didn't entirely know what she was signing up for, but she did know she was attracted to him, even though she signed on for an entirely platonic relationship. She knows he feels something more for her, but won't admit it.
This story had a lot of potential, but something didn't come through in execution. Aiden was probably the best thing about the story. He's a decent guy, a loner and my geek heartstrings were being plucked a bit...it's a subtle geekiness. It's too bad we never really learned that much about him...sure we got some basics, but he didn't share much about his life. Nor did we ever get an answer for why he needed a pretend girlfriend...nor why he decided to offer Gwen a contract instead of just asking her out...etc. Too many unanswered questions about him. Gwen was a bit overly emotional at times and came across like a high schooler the way she'd ponder, "He loves me," "He loves me not." It got a bit tedious being inside her head all the time. She describes her feelings toward Aiden as like having known him all her life, but I never really got a sense of any real connection between them. Which was disappointing, because Aiden deserved an epic love. And Beatrice, the friend, was a pain in the ass. The story built up rather nicely right up to the couple's first sexy times and the consequent meeting with Aiden's dad, but it went a bit downhill from there as all we got was the couple fleeing the paparazzi and having lots of sex. This would have been fine if we'd gotten a actual conflict between Aiden and his dad or a real sense of resolution between them. But the ending was a bit disappointing as everything happened off-screen and we jumped into the epilogue without any dealing with feelings.

2.5** Overall the story was the usually MO of the rich guy/poor girl scenario. Gwen unfortunately needs $5000. Meets Aiden who needs a pretend girlfriend. The story had a good plot but the flow was slow at times and had my pet peeve to many holes.
I spent a lot of time reading this book hoping it would get better. Aiden was first presented as a strong character only to end up on the run dodging daddy's childish tactics. The billionaire in this story is Henry, the dad, and Aiden was more a puppet. Don't bother!
