At first, I was pretty nervous about how much I would get into this volume since it's been so long since I've read the previous one, but I loved this volume so much!

The focus on Aoi and Ginji really touched my heart, even though things are NOT good for Aoi, and I absolutely hated how she was being bullied in this new place! It made me realize how much everyone at Tenjin-ya has really come to care for her and hope that those around her at Orio-ya will come to care for her just as much. <3

Though I NEED things to be okay with Ginji! The mystery surrounding him leaves me worried, and I am thankful that Aoi wants to stay even when she is provided with an exit because she wants to make sure he returns with her to Tenjin-ya. I definitely feel the more we find out about things, the more nervous I become…

However, I LOVED the special visitor near the end! That was a very special chapter, and I wish I could say more, but it was wonderful!

Overall, I loved this volume and enjoyed seeing at least a few familiar faces when things seemed dire! Also, all the food made me hungry because everything looked SO delicious!

After her abrupt removal from Tenjin-ya, Aoi is facing an uncertain start at Orio-ya. Fortunately, Ginji is doing his best to protect her, an old friend with influence is also at Orio-ya and Aoi makes a couple friends among the prickly and aggressive staff.

This is a hard volume because Orio-ya's staff has no reason to treat Aoi well, and most of them see her as an outsider at best, an enemy and rival at worst, but their hostility is tempered when she is known to be a favorite of a powerful guest so it isn't as bad as it first seems it will be. And then Aoi starts working her magic of being herself and being helpful, and realizes that something big is going on that she stumbled into and risks damaging so she vows to do her best to support them. Because I've seen the anime (and this volume is the first episode of season 2 and we're now in season 3) I know what's going on and Looking forward to Aoi beginning her conquest of the Southern Lands!

Content notes: No real language or sensuality issues; Aoi faces some physical/mental/verbal harassment, but it isn't allowed to continue and she is given a way out if she wants it.

The trend of this series to provide the reader with little story progress in exchange for long intervening wait times between volumes continues.

In this volume, it's almost as if

It sounds as though the light novels, upon which the manga was based, has come to an end recently, so at least there's light at the end of the tunnel that we will eventually get some closure on this story.

This volume starts with the kidnapping arc right after episode 13 in season 1. While reading this I felt like the story was back to volume one as far as the content was going. She's back to pretty much square one when it comes to progress with working with the people around her. I dropped one of the stars because of this redundance feeling. I don't want to feel like the same stuff is just being recycled, hopefully the next volume will move on to the next stage of whatever is going on.

I still enjoyed this volume, but this does feel like a rehash of the very first few volumes. New inn, Aoi is bullied, Genji is helpful, new cooking place that she has to spruce up similar to at Tenjin-Ya, etc. The mystery of the fireworks festival is intriguing and I look forward to more of this arc, even if the volumes do take a long while to be published and translated.

And so we begin in medias res -- spoilers ahead for the earlier volumes

Aoi gets an unpleasant welcome at the rival inn. Indeed, she's locked in a cell -- which, she realizes, is a hotel room despite its bars -- and Peewee, having snuck along, gets the keys.

The rest includes some of Ginji's past, Aoi's looking for a time to ask him about her past, a hairpin, discontent guests, a request for help, the reason for the fireworks celebration, and more.

I really wish these books were at least one more chapter longer. Ever since the page size shrank these books end on rather boring notes with very little anticipation for the next volume.

Still, i love the story, and love Aoi and her cooking. This volume had both of those in spades.
