Kip Chanin can find herself in trouble faster than the shutter speed of a good camera and that’s usually the reason. It’s how Kip looks at the world and how she wants to tell the story in the photos she takes that gets people talking and makes them furious.
But life moves too fast to wonder for long if she’ll be forgiven—for anything. Kip has an 80 year old murder to solve, portraits to take of scruffy rock stars and a friendship to create with a shy jazz singer. All while trying to manage Alex who is 6,000 miles away in serial snowstorms with his sizzling hot co-star throwing herself at him.
The past has surprising ways of sneaking up on people and Kip finds ways to put history behind her and Alex. But not always.
Barbara Morgenroth did a fantastic job with these two books. Kip is an amazing feisty heroine that you can’t help but admire. Yes she falls into incredible luck but it’s due to her drive and initiative. The story is well put together and paced well. I love watching her grow and develop throughout these two books. I am an avid reader and will come back to books I love numerous times, but this series has to be some kind of a record for me. My only complaint is that it seems like there should be one more book to the series but if it’s out there I can’t find it.
Do yourself a favor and read both of the books in this series. They are well worth your time
I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. The story is great and takes the story in unexpected places. Throwing in solving an eighty year old mystery that was still affecting the following generations was brilliant.
I liked the first one, well some of it. Like the first it started off intriguing and started to get dull, dragged on and a bit of a snore. I enjoyed the story line and her on the hunt to clear the Milne name. So the mystery was there yet again and the hunt for answers was good. Bay as always I love. Kip I was proud of again and she truly is an amazing character. Wise beyond her 15 years. She was a bit more odd though in this book and I found it out of left field kind of. Dew I was proud of also, she certainly stepped up in the mother and responsible human being category. Loved Gabe, proud of him also. Alex and Kip I felt went backwards and I really do not feel anything romantic between them, friends if anything. And I assume they had sex, I was confused and it was not detailed AT ALL.I get this is YA, but I have read YA and had SOME stuff, I guess I need to watch what I read then, because I need that in a story. I need more and more romance, a connection, etc. Again the end was like wow, I hope there is more, but I was told there wouldn't be. So all in all it was a decent read, disappointed a bit and there were many errors like the first. Again it takes nothing away from the story, just wanting to make a note. For others these may be okay, but for me, not so much. They weren't horrible, but were not anything spectacular. The content is VERY good. Barbara clearly knows what she is talking about with being an actor, Hollywood, murders, geography, etc. I was impressed with certain aspects of the book. They could of been something amazing, but again fell short for me. I may give her other books a try. I downloaded a few, but not sold after these.
I have to admit, I wasn't sure what to expect from this book when I received it, but then again, this is why I love doing reviews. There are a lot of books I would never think of reading, but then they are handed to me and I have to read them to do a review. This is one of those books that makes be grateful to be able to do this. The characters are multi-dimensional, smart, funny, sharp, damaged, flawed and believable. The book takes place in my home town, Los Angeles, and Barbara Morgenroth knows her geography. She also knows her industry.
I was so engaged by the relationships in this story, I read it in one sitting, then immediately bought the second book... which I read last night. And I hope there's a third book coming out, because Barbara does like cliff hangers. Having said that, I don't mind cliff hangers and I LOVED this book!! Kip is an independent, smart, talented girl and although at times she seems much older than she is, we understand why, but then the author shows us this glimpse of a young girl and we are reminded, she's not a gown up yet. The agents are all totally accurate, the actors as well. The book is like an onion that has layers and layers of story. I guess i could go on, but this story is truly phenomenal and it is an unbelievable ride. Hurry with Book 3 please!!
The first and second Kipling Chanin books are populated with imperfect people and trying situations. I'm a fan of flawed (realistic) characters, so these books are certainly enjoyable. Even though some characters enjoy privilege, they've known hardships of various kinds and are grounded, likable, and dynamic.
These books are also dialogue-driven. The plentiful dialogue guides readers to make inferences about the characters rather than be told what to think. Each character speaks in a distinctive manner, making conversations easy to follow without an overabundance of tags.
Kip is a great leading character with an iron will, though she seems more like a 18-22-year-old than a teen. I'm guessing/wondering if her father's persona was based in part on the life and death of Gram Parsons.
I'm looking forward to / hoping for another installment.
