“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
It is the most dangerous and loving cause in the rescuing sinners from eternal suffering and bringing them into the eternal joy of relationship with Jesus.
Jesus himself said that for every person who does not believe, the wrath of God remains on him (John 3:36). And for the peoples of the world who have no access to the gospel, the wrath of God does just that. World missions is the marvelous venture of crossing cultures to rescue unreached peoples from eternal suffering, renovate their broken lives, and see them reflect God’s glory through joy in Christ.
There is no better reason to lose your life and no greater way to live it.
Cross captures, for a new generation, this great summons to the unreached and unengaged peoples of the world. Inspired by the inaugural Cross student missions conference, this book includes contributions from John Piper, David, Platt, Matt Chandler, Thabiti Anyabwile, Kevin DeYoung, D. A. Carson, and more.
John Piper is founder and teacher of desiringGod.org and chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary. For 33 years, he served as senior pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
He grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, and studied at Wheaton College, Fuller Theological Seminary (B.D.), and the University of Munich (D.theol.). For six years, he taught Biblical Studies at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and in 1980 accepted the call to serve as pastor at Bethlehem.
John is the author of more than 50 books and more than 30 years of his preaching and teaching is available free at desiringGod.org. John and his wife, Noel, have four sons, one daughter, and twelve grandchildren.
This was a challenging read. Not that I necessarily have a burning desire to do overseas missionary work to unreached peoples (although I think this is still a good thing to pray about), more in the sense that it challenges so much of western culture and our idolatry of comfort that often sneaks into our churches. What a radical call, to go to the hard places and do the hard thing and really trust that Christ will satisfy. I found the words of Michael Oh, Matt Chandler and David Platt most challenging and helpful. Praise God for people who will make the sacrifice to do this and He will use to accomplish His mission!
This book was written by those involved in a collegiate missions conference and it has that feel, every chapter essentially being a rally cry and challenging the reader to take the plunge.
Readers with reformed theology will feel more at home; the words TULIP, army, and hell do make appearances. This book is laser-focused on taking the call seriously to spread the Gospel. If you're a fan of John Piper, David Platt, Kevin DeYoung, then you'll like this book.
I was most looking forward to Matt Chandler's chapter. I like the texture of his writing, it always feels fresh. Only one tiny moment of cringe with a reference to Ravi Zacharias; my heart still hurts on that scandal. :-(
This book is very certain of itself but I think that's in line with its purpose which I see as the coach's locker room speech before players take the field. It's not a time for philosophizing, it's a time for a pep talk and putting hands in the middle to say "go team" on the count of 3.
3.5 stars, reminded me of college ministry days and had me reflecting on the twists and turns of ministry over the years. God loves his church and coming alongside the lost; however you feel about the church right now, or about certain flavors of preaching, God understands and is with you.
Read this book with our mission team before going on a mission trip to Rome. This was a good book to read and challenge us before going! A few chapters were a little harder to read/not as engaging but over all a good book to challenge our thinking of missions!
Is this book saying that if Christians do not go and share the word of God to "unreached" people, God almighty, the Lord of hosts, Creator of the Universe has His hands tied and no other way to express His eternal, life saving salvation to them, and sends them to hell? I'm a Bible believer, regenerated, born again. I do not see God or His plan of salvation this way. This is not the place for further debate, but if read, this book should be studied with caution, using the full counsel of God's Word. Most likely it will mostly attract the Calvinist/reformed crowd who already believe salvation is only for a preselected group.
This book is based on a missions conference by the same name and features contributions by John Piper, Thabiti Anyabwile, Kevin DeYoung, Matt Chandler, D.A. Carson and David Platt, among others. It is a call and challenge to be involved in worldwide missions - in particular among unreached people groups. While this is a difficult and perhaps even daunting task, reading this book reminded me of the greatness of the God we serve and the privilege it is to have a part in God's mission here on earth.
A great book that helps remind believers of the global scope of the Gospel. It's so easy to lose sight of the one true mission we all have, to make disciples of all nations. Read this book. Pray. Be obedient to the glory of God among the nations!
