There is a lot of great info in this book and I appreciated the structure of the book. It had clear, actionable steps backed by research and with relatable scenarios of how to interact with my child to take those steps. It gave me lots to think about and, while I might do everything suggested by the author, it definitely gave us some new tools to help our son learn to read and learn to love reading as well. Would definitely recommend this book to other parents!
I was recommended this book by a person presenting at a work conference. As a library employee, with two teenagers of my own, it was interesting and did echo my own approach when my children were younger so it was interesting to read it with my librarian hat on. Some portions of the book were quite relevant and gave me ideas that I could bring into my job and others not so much so.
I didn’t rate this book highly because I’ve heard these pieces of advice before. As a teacher, my perspective to read and learn from this text was different than that of a parent. I agree with the advice in chapters 3 and 4 about supporting readers at home, but much of the rest of the text was not relevant to me in the classroom.
Some helpful and creative ideas but overall not super new information and seems at times too harsh and judgmental toward parents unable to provide at-home literacy support.
The book offers simple and practical advice for parents wanting to help their child learn to read. There are many examples of simple ways to engage a child in learning to read and the majority are very easy to initiate. I now talk to my infant daughter while we drive in the car so she can hear more words from me. I love hearing her pronunciation improve!
I was given a copy of the book as a Goodreads giveaway and asked to write an honest review.
I absolutely love this book. It has some very practical strategies for encouraging children to love reading. It provides ideas that will help in the practice of making reading enjoyable rather than a task.
Incredibly simple, straight-foward read with great insights on how to make learning to read fun and effective for your child. This book is relevant for parents with newborns to five years old.
