Second Chances

Ten years have passed since young nurse Sophie Lee was accused of murdering her wealthy patient, Audrey Star. Georgia attorney Mikala Aulani believed her innocence--and Adam Star's guilt--but the prosecution convinced a jury otherwise. Sophie was convicted on a Tuesday--the day on which every significant event in her life, good or bad, seems to happen. Now, on the verge of his death, Adam exonerates Sophie and also leaves her a huge fortune in atonement.

Sophie retreats to Kala's house and tries to evade the media frenzy that surrounds her. Kala is determined to help her client make her way back into the world. Yet for both, there are still revelations in store--about the nature of redemption, the strange workings of fate, and the power of forgiveness. And most of all, about the secrets that hide in every heart--even those we think we know best. . .

Fern Michaels isn’t a person. I’m not sure she’s an entity either since an entity is something with separate existence. Fern Michaels® is what I DO. Me, Mary Ruth Kuczkir. Growing up in Hastings, Pennsylvania, I was called Ruth. I became Mary when I entered the business world where first names were the order of the day. To this day, family and friends call me Dink, a name my father gave me when I was born because according to him I was ‘a dinky little thing’ weighing in at four and a half pounds. However, I answer to Fern since people are more comfortable with a name they can pronounce.

As they say, the past is prologue. I grew up, got a job, got married, had five kids. When my youngest went off to Kindergarten, my husband told me to get off my ass and get a job. Those were his exact words. I didn’t know how to do anything except be a wife and mother. I was also a voracious reader having cut my teeth on The Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Cherry Ames and the like. The library was a magical place for me. It still is to this day. Rather than face the outside world with no skills, I decided to write a book. For some reason that didn’t intimidate me. As my husband said at the time, stupid is as stupid does. Guess what, I don’t have that husband any more. Guess what else! I wrote 99 books, most of them New York Times Best Sellers.

Moving right along here . . . Several years ago I left Ballantine Books, parted company with my agent, sold my house in New Jersey that I had lived in all my married life and in 1993 moved to South Carolina. I figured if I was going to go through trauma let it be all at one time. It was a breeze. The kids were all on their own at that point. The dump was a 300 year old plantation house that is listed in the National Registry that I remodeled. Today it is beyond belief as are the gardens and the equally old Angel Oaks that drip Spanish moss. Unfortunately, I could not get my ghost to relocate. This ghost has been documented by previous owners. Mary Margaret as we call her, is “a friendly”. She is also mischievous. It took me two weeks to figure out that she didn’t like my coffee cups. They would slide off the table or counter or else they’d break in the dishwasher. I bought red checkered ones. All are intact as of this writing. She moves pillows from one room to the other and she stops all the clocks in the house at 9:10 in the a.m. at least once a week. When the Azaleas are in bloom, and only then, I find blooms on my night stand. I have this glorious front porch and during the warm months I see my swing moving early in the morning when the air is still and again late in the day. She doesn’t spook the dogs. I always know when she’s around because the five of them line up and look like they’re at a tennis match. As of this writing we’re co-habiting nicely.

Most writers love what they do and I’m no exception. I love it when I get a germ of an idea and get it down on paper. I love breathing life into my characters. I love writing about women who persevere and prevail because that’s what I had to do to get to this point in time. It’s another way of saying it doesn’t matter where you’ve been, what matters is where you’re going and how you get there. The day I finally prevailed was the day I was inducted into the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame. For me it was an awesome day and there are no words to describe it.
I’ve been telling stories and scribbling for 37 years. I hope I can continue for another 37 years. It wasn’t easy during some of those years. As I said, I had to persevere. My old Polish grandmother said something to me when I was little that I never forgot. She said when God is good to you, you have to give back. For a while I didn’t know how to do that. When I finally figured it out I set up The Fern Michaels® Foundation.

This was a very interesting... the whole time I was reading it I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.... and it did in form of a Journal!

This takes place in Georgia and Hawaii. 3 orphan’s, a defense attorney and a prosecutor... throw them all in a bowl.... and what do you have....a murder and a mess. You have to read to find out who floats to the top!

This was my first book that I read of Fern Michaels, I found it very enjoyable, and will certainly be on the look-out for more MST books of hers.

I just finished reading this book about 10 minutes ago. I found this book to be a disappointment. As others have pointed out this isn't Fern Michaels typical writing style. Great story until about the last 50 pages or so. After that it seemed like even Ms. Michaels just wanted to book to be done with.

The main character Sophie Lee starts off being convicted for killing her patient. Years later the patients husband submits a deathbed confession stating that he was the one who killed his wife. Sophie Lee is whisked away during the hustle and bustle of the aftermath. WIth nothing else to do but wait, she takes long walks and swims.

Sophie lee grew up as an orphan and had three childhood best friends whom she cut contact with during the ten years she had been imprisoned. During her wait Sophie Lee seems eager to reunite with her friends. Jumping for joy and making immediate plans when her attorney tells her she can return home. Unbeknownst to her one had passed away while she was in prison. She seemed eager to starting a relationship with one of the friends whom she has loved forever.

Every part of this portion was a great girl next door, orphan gets robbed 10 years on a wrongful verdict as her attorney makes it all right again.

The last 50 pages or so... the moment Sophie Lee steps off the plane, the story becomes dreary. I don't know how to explain it. ALL the other Fern Michaels books have left me with a Kick Ass, underdog winning feeling and this left me irritated and let down.

Right away getting off the plane, Kala (the attorney) and one of her partners notice right away something being off. But they push past that feeling and the attorney's and friends celebrate.

Later that evening Sophie Lee is sitting with her friends when she learns of the third friends passing. This is when Ms. Michaels shows the character having a different personality. Until this point, she seemed humbled and gracious, loving and generous. At this point she seemed money hungry and power driven. Even telling the man that she seemed eager earlier in the story that she only loved him like a brother.

She seemed to expect to be served by her friends and she treated them aloofly. Completely out of character from how she was during the first 9/10ths of the story.

There is one little twist, which honestly at this point seems irrelevant. Sophie lee just, it seems walks away from everything that she seemed to be eager to go towards at the beginning of the story.

The climax was a complete let down.

Great up until the last 50 pages.

Then it gets weird. Sophie goes out
of character and the ending is terrible as it seems
that the characters all changed for unknown reason.

While I am an admirer of Michael's writing, characterization, pace and plotting I found a hair in my soup this time. The story is great, it wasn't the writing, it was a detail that ruined the book for me. It was Fox News. Imagine, if you will, a group of lawyers. Highly educated, smart, worldly who hire a close associate to help on a case. She was a recently fired journalist and was to work as an investigator in the law office. She gets a job offer at the end...with Fox News. She acts like that's a good thing. These intelligent lawyers all congratulated her on this. As if it wasn't an act of career-ending insanity. Fox News is a joke. Its "reporters" are essentially liars, bigots, homophobes, very poor journalists, and mouthpieces of the conservative and religious right. How could any author do that to a character, especially one so smart and driven? An intelligent, worldly person, even in Georgia, one would hope would be shocked to see someone they liked turning into one of those heinous charlatans. So thumbs down on that choice, Fern Michaels. It also makes me question if the author has such extreme leanings herself which makes me not really keen to read more of her work.

This was one of the worst written books I have ever read. The plot really didnt make sense. The characters were so weak in their development that their personalities changed from one paragraph to the next. I am not a writer but I think I could've written a better book. I haven't read any of Fern Michaels other books but if they are anything like this one no thanks.

I can not honestly say if I liked this book or not. Its not a typical Fern Michaels read. It’s not quite a love story but it is not a Weekend Warrior either. Kala has been Sophie Lee’s lawyer for ten years. Sophie was tried and convicted for a murder she didn’t commit and now its time to set everything strait again. Everything was great until the last fifty pages or so. The tone of the novel changed from a happy cheerful read to something darker and it never seemed to come out of that funk. The ending was not surprising which was okay, but having just finished the tale I feel bereft. The end was just not enough to make me happy with this title.

I found this book to be really disappointing. There was a lot of waiting around and a lot of finger pointing toward who was actually the killer. The person who you think is supposed to be the villain turns out to be the total opposite. The people you think would end up together, their relationship fizzles away with little explanation about it. Just left me feeling really disappointed in this whole book.

This book was so hard to put down once I started reading it. I was very surprised at the ending I thought I had figured it out half way threw the book but it had several twists and turns to it. I was so surprised at the end to find out how she really died.

I can't decide about this book. I usually love Fern Michaels but I don't know if it was too many characters going here and there or if it was just my mind set, but I struggled to finish this on. It finally really grabbed my attention towards the last quarter of the book but I didn't like how it ended. . . .

I found this book to be interesting all the way to the end - the characters were likeable - the families - friendships - working conditions - and a little politics made it a "have to know how this ends" story - it was a fast read for me.

This story was beyond awful. It's not like we're talking about a mass murderer who has manipulated the system to get away with her crimes. The stupid twist is that a sweet, humble nurse helped a terminal patient die and then spent 10 years in prison for it! Some hardened felons don't spend that much time in prison for their crimes.
* The characters are not well developed at all and are shallow, annoying, & extremely judgemental; not one of them is likable.
* The entire book is manufactured drama - if a person was incorrectly convicted & it was set right when another confessed to it then they'd get out, get a settlement and move on. The DA wouldn't be crucified, the lawyers wouldn't go nuts digging into the case (heck maybe they should have done all that work when the crime actually occurred!!) & there'd be no need for Sophie to have gone into seclusion. All beyond stupid and not entertaining.
* The orphan friends dynamic was ridiculous. Patty was a complete obnoxious judgemental bi#@hy reporter. There was no reason that Sophie would have cut off all contact with the world while in prison. And then one minute she was looking forward to being with them again & the next she's a witch with no emotions & treats everyone like dirt. Also, her "best friends" completely trash her after seeing Sophie again bc "she's changed"-she just spent 10 years in prison! All just insulting to the readers to think we'd buy into that garbage.
* Minor annoyances:
> Who just gives their dog away to some random stranger???
> Why can't they call Ryan Spencer "Ryan" instead of "Spencer" all the time?
> Who plans for a 6 mth trip but doesn't plan for their bills? And who gets that much mail!?!?
> Kala was so very happy to take Sophie's money but then completely turn on her when she
found out she did end Audrey's pain. What a hypocrite. Sophie did her time & was out now. I
ended hating the judgemental lawyer - who probably got off many, many other guilty people
over the course of her career.
*The Epilogue was ridiculous as well - it was to point out that a mere 5 months later, all of the "good" characters had met new people and were getting engaged while the "evil" Sophie was alone.

I hated this book and every character in it. So bad.

Tuesday's Child by Fern Michaels
Things always go from bad to worse on Tuesdays. The whole book comes down to the day of the week, in the most important of things that happen.

Mikala was just about to retire but the one case she lost the defender walked in and declared he had killed his wife. He wants her client to have all of his estate after he's dead within a weeks time. Sophia has been in jail for 10 years now.
When Sophia is released it's up to Kala's law firm to get her the money that is deserved her and to prosecute the lawyer who brought this to trial.

Love the travel, and mostly the familiness of the 4 orphans. Love to hear how their lives have progressed over the years.

Loved hearing how she spent her first days free from prison.

Both sides are going through and over all the testimony, transcripts, evidence, etc. to try to figure out who's to blame for the death.

Kala is now planning on marrying her retired judge Ben and living in Hawaii. They have hidden Sophia til things settle down.

All of Sophie's friends from the orphanage are together, contemplating the reunion with their friend.

Just when you think the end is near something else happens to make you think, wow this could really happen and just when things are figured out, they are not really.
Out of the hundreds of books I've read since Jan. 2012 this is the best by far on so many counts.

The travel, the sincere emotion while reading this, the familiness of the orphans and because of the way the characters are introduced they are not confusing and overwhelming because there are quite a few of them.

Being a huge fan of Fern Michaels books for many years I looked forward to reading this book..I debated between 3 and 4 stars and decided to go with four since most of the book was enjoyable to me..I was very disappointed with the end of this book..It had a good plot and I liked so many of the characters along the way, including Sophie, who had been released from prison after serving ten years for murder..A deathbed confession led to her release and I loved how she was getting her life back together..The ending just totally took all the joy out of me and I really have to wonder if I would have read the book knowing the end..

I loved the first three-quarters of the book and then it tanked. The ending was a huge letdown and seemed hurried and pat to me. If the ending had been as good as the rest of the book I would have given it 5 stars. As it was, all I felt was disappointment after initially loving the book.
There was a twist that was really neat that ended up going nowhere and then another twist at the end of the story that the author didn't really seem to know what to do with. She should have just kept to the original ending before the twist. Again, very disappointing after an initially great read.

This was a good story but nothing exceptional. Probably more like 3.5. This is about a lawyer named Kala and one of her former clients. Sophie Lee had been charged with the murder of a woman and had been in jail for 10 years when one day the woman's husband came to her, near death, and said he was the one who killed her. He had legal representation and a full confession and asked that it not be revealed until he died. Sophie was the wife's nurse when she was hospitalized after a car wreck. The husband's motivation was the fact that he couldn't live with a paralyzed wife and wanted to rid himself of the burden. He leaves all his wealth to Sophie and wants to give her everything as an atonement for the 10 years she spent wrongfully behind bars. Kala hates the husband's attorney from the original case but they come together with this new information because he is running for political office and this has the potential to destroy his career. Furthermore, something just doesn't seem right about the confession...
I thought this book was engaging and fast moving. There were some side stories and characters that I didn't think were really necessary but not bad and the main storyline was always clearly the focus. I didn't really enjoy hearing about Sophie's time in Hawaii. I got bored with the talk of the dogs, etc. I also thought Spenser's back story was a little cheesy, but I understand why the author included it. I haven't read Fern Michaels in forever and while I won't be keeping this book on my shelf, I will be reading more of her work.

SPOILERS AHEAD:
Kala hated Ryan Spenser- the husband's original attorney. However she finds out more about his past and realizes that his parents didn't love him and he was treated as a nuisance growing up. He's actually a really sweet and genuine guy. In the end they become best friends and work together to solve what really happened in the death of Audrey Star. They find out that she journaled all the time and they found all of the journals except the last one. Through the journals they learned that she was mentally handicapped in some way and various things about her relationship with the doctor, the nurse (Sophie Lee) and her husband. When they find the final journal, we find out that she and her husband had a suicide pact but he backed out. Furthermore, Sophie Lee did actually kill her as an assisted suicide to help her leave the misery she was in.

I enjoyed the book until Sophie got off the plane and then the book went off the rails. Made me feel almost cheated. Sophie was so sweet and happy to be seeing her friends and she turns into a bitch. Her friends also turn away from her…. All this out of the blue. Almost like 2 different tones. The epilogue took place 5 months after the big reveal of Sophie actually killing Audrey Star but everyone has met and is engaged to someone . Ending was rushed. And I couldn’t understand why everyone tried to make Spenser out to be such a horrid person. He was the prosecutor doing his job. Sophie’s found guilty by a group of her peers because he did his job extremely well. Once the husband admitted to killing his wife Audrey the big public outcry for wrongly convicting Sophie was ludicrous . And why they thought Sophie had to be wisked away was a stumper.
And since both Spencer and Kala read the last journal, they both figured out that Sophie actually did kill her, there was no reason for Kala to fret and lose sleep over it. Sometimes justice is done and sometimes it goes awry.

An excellent read! The story is about redemption, forgiveness, and secrets.
Sophie was convicted of a murder she did no commit and was given life in prison with no possibility of parole. She was freed after 10 years in prison due to a very, very unusual circumstance. Sophie's attorneys swept her away to Hawaii to guard her from the press and to get her life straighten out.. She had also received a very large fortune and an estate from the dead woman's husband when he died shortly after Sophie's release from prison.
Neither the prosecuting attorney or her defense attorney believed she was guilty. Now that she was safely hidden away, the attorneys set out to find out how Audrey Star really did die and who killed her.
There are a lot of details and action in this plot with very good characterization and reality.

Life is a series of twists and turns. In Tuesday’s Child: Sophie Lee is convicted of murdering her patient Audrey Star and sentenced to life in prison; Kala Aulani, Sophie’s attorney, can’t believe the verdict and continues unrelentlessly to find evidence to get her released; Ryan Spenser, working for Star Enterprises and Audrey’s husband, Adam Star is equally shocked that Sophie is convicted but pleased the conviction breaks Kala’s winning streak.
Ten years later as Kala is clearing her desk and preparing to retire from her law practice everything about Sophie Lee’s case takes on a new life and Kala charges all her plans to see it through to the end, but what end will that be?

It’s been a long time since I picked up a Fern Michaels novel, but Tuesday’s Child reminded me why I’ve always been a fan. As expected, she didn’t disappoint—her gift for character development and storytelling resonates deeply with me. The narrative was engaging and easy to follow, making it a quick, enjoyable read.

What stood out most was the emotional twist at the end. It brought tears to my eyes, yet it felt authentic and gave real truth to the story. While not my absolute favorite of her works, it was still a heartfelt and memorable journey that proves Fern Michaels continues to deliver compelling stories time and again.

Sophie has been wrongfully convicted of a murdering her patient. After 10 years in prison, the husband admits guilt and sets many things in motion as Sophie tries to get her life back.
Everything in the story is "over the top": the wealth of the Star family, the Aulanis' wealth, one of the attorney's is the great grandson of Clarence Darrow, Ryan Spenser's father is the Speaker of the US House and his grandfather is the state governor. The relationship of Sophie, Patty, Nick, & Jon is stated so many times it became boring. A better editor could have made this a better book.

These are my notes to help me remember the storyline. A great defense attorney Mikayla Aulani who unfortunately didn't get her client, nurse Sophie Lee off from murdering her patient Audrey Star in the private home. Sophie went to prison for 10 years until widow Adam Star on his pending death, confessed that he was the person who ended his wife's life years before. . . .but was that the truth?? Sophie ends up rich after Adam Star leaves his money to her.. . .and lives happy ever after . . .as a killer 🫣 I like the way Ms Michaels writes.

Tuesday’s Child

This book was ok but not very exciting. I liked it because Kala Aulani was from Hawaii & was very successful. It makes me very proud when Hawaiians become successful.
There is one thing that I need to point out to you in addition to the flaws in punctuation, & that is lei is correctly used as singular & plural. Leis to apply to more than one lei is simply incorrect. Thank you.

This author has been a favorite for years. This was actually the 15th book I have by her. A young nurse is sentenced to life in prison after the death of a patient. The patient is a prominent pillar of the community and known for her inherited wealth. The book had a most unexpected twist. Like most of her books it was an easy read. I was interested in the author and read her biography. It was a most interesting one. She claims she is not a great writer but a very good story teller.

It’s been a long time since I read this author. It was a nice break in the mystery/thriller books I normally read. A woman is convicted of a murder she did not do and spends 10 years in prison when the husband confessed to the murder on his death bed. How her life changes after being freed is the true story.

Was not a fan of this book at all. Didn’t seem like Ferns usual fast paced thriller i expected. I was really unhappy with the ending. I really wanted to believe Sophie was wrongfully convicted but I feel like she changed into a spoiled entitled person in the end. this book just didn’t seem very believable to me.

Ridiculous. Just when I thought I had found one of the few good Fern Michaels book, it all goes south. Its like she changed the whole plot at the center of the book. Up to that point, it was actually a very good read. But when things went south, it just snowballed. So many good ways to end this book, but none of it happened.
