This large square book teaches small children to count using a simple abacus. The abacus, which is securely couched in the pages of the book itself, consists of five colorful beads - two circles, three squares - and each page of the book issues instructions for moving the beads to count up to a given number. The text counts up to five and back down to one again, then the final spread gives an opportunity to practice counting independently. While counting higher than two is still a little beyond Miss Muffet, she loves to move the beads back and forth across the abacus, and she is perfectly content to let me show her how many beads we need to make each number. Since we plan to teach her math using the soroban when she is older, this simple introduction to the abacus has been ideal for her, and I'm sure we will continue to use it throughout toddlerhood.
