Magic is real. And in one year, the whole world will know.
Emma Thompson has spent her life chasing success—not secrets. But when the ambitious Boston lawyer discovers she’s one of the rare few who can wield raw, untamed magic, everything changes. Now, she’s dragged into a hidden world of spellcraft and shadow politics, where one wrong move could spark a global war.
Her only ally? James, the frustratingly arrogant—and distractingly attractive—heir to the magical leadership. As Emma trains to control her volatile powers, she finds herself caught between growing feelings for James and the mounting pressure of a deadline that could shatter everything.
With just one year until magic’s existence is revealed to humanity, Emma must fight for the life she thought she wanted…or embrace the dangerous truth of who she really is.
Perfect for fans of Zodiac Academy and The Atlas Six, Cerulean Truth is a slow-burn romantic fantasy where power comes at a price—and the clock is ticking.
This was a rollercoaster ride! This book is a thiccc 653pgs so be ready to get invested. The premise was fan-freakin'-tastic! It's was kept me going even when I wanted to stop. I had to know what was going to happen, I was invested! ...too bad I was still left hanging in the end. Ain't no way I read 653 pages and didn't get a conclusion to one of the 50 plots left open. This book needed a few rounds with a seasoned editor. Will I be reading book 2 even if it's 650pgs? Abso-freakin'-lutely! I will trudge thru more sludge to see what happens because the story was good! It just wasn't presented to us properly this go round.
In a world where magic is hidden in plain sight, Emma Thompson, a driven lawyer in Boston, discovers she has deadly magical powers. Immediately thrown into a complex, unbelievable new society Emma is thrust into vigorous training to protect, and potentially save, her life with the infuriatingly enthralling James, who is a leader in waiting. With the “Great Exposure”, that will reveal magic to the human world, just a year away Emma becomes a pawn in dangerous political games encompassing the historical even thats to come to pass. The clock is ticking as Emma must master her explosive magic or risk igniting a conflict that has the potential to destroy both worlds.
Dedication: "To every woman who once believed she needed someone else to become who she wanted to be, and then discovered she didn’t."
Cerulean Truth is Sorcha Reagh’s debut novel, after a heartfelt dedication and a heart pounding epic prologue the bar is set high, pun intended. I am a sucker for sharp banter and sarcastic humor and Cerulean Truth delivers it in spades from the very start with the first line of the first chapter being “I was staring at porn. Again.” Right from the start it gave me major Bride by Ali Hazelwood vibes but Sorcha definitely carves out her own unique space in the world of Romantasy.
This book is written in dual POV, which brings you closer to Emma and James and some of the endearing side characters, giving the story a deeper, more intimate feel while weaving a layered, compelling plot that keeps you hooked. This novel starts slowly, but it’s only because Sorcha takes the time to create a unique magic system and build another world with futuristic tools, language, and magic while developing multi-dimensional characters in an easy to understand manner. She doesn’t just build her fantasy world carefully; she crafts her romance with the same level of thought. Cerulean Truth is the slowest of slow burns, and it will leave you craving more in the best way possible. The chemistry and angsty tension is off the charts which makes the gift of spice mouthwatering. With that said, you’re not just invested in Emma and James' relationship but also their growth as individuals, which makes you eager to see where their futures take them.
Which brings me to the unexpected cliffhanger ending of this book. Left wanting is an understatement. I'm impatiently anticipating the second installment of the Sapere series. I can't wait to see where these brilliant characters and their captivating stories will take me next.
Some quotes I loved were:
“Re(s)norting to other substances than caffeine to stay awake.”
“Please don’t deny you have feelings for her either. Your denial is practically a second personality at this point.”
“You shouldn’t be this trusting. Prepare for the worst, be surprised by the best.”
“I have never known lust like this, a burning so intense it seemed to scorch within me like a wildfire, yearning for release. The heat of the moment was suffocating, a blaze of passion engulfing me, leaving me gasping and craving.”
Cerulean Truth by Sorcha Reagh is a gem of a debut that had me laughing from the first pages. It’s packed with witty, sarcastic dialogue that adds so much personality to the story—exactly my kind of humor! One memorable line: “Damn woman, if I had known steak made you so docile I would've fed you a long time ago.”
The first 30% of the book might feel a bit heavy as the author carefully builds a new, intricate world filled with unique magic, specialized combat devices, and fascinating communication tools. But once you get through it, the story grips you completely. I absolutely loved the dynamic between the main characters—the tension, the banter, and the chemistry are spot on, and they’ll keep you hooked until the end.
What kind of MMC can you expect in Cerulean Truth? Let me break it down for you:
😏Offers personalized "training sessions" that might just bring you to the brink of... enlightenment (or something a little more intense). 🤨Has a stare so predatory it’ll make you feel like Bambi frozen in front of a wolf. 🥩Knows the holy trinity of indulgence: steak, scotch, and cigars.
The story is told in dual POV, which adds depth to both the plot and characters. If you’re into betrayals, twists, and a vibrant new world, this is a must-read. For a debut, it’s incredibly promising and so much fun. I already can’t wait to see what Sorcha Reagh writes next!
I found out about this book from a dear bookstagram friend and I'm super grateful for this recommendation. Also, thanks to wonderful Sorcha, I was able to read her debut book in advance🥰.
First of all, I need to mention that this book is pretty stuffy, but I can reassure you that the content is very alert and the pages will fly by really fast🤭. I must admit that I was a bit concerned about this fact, but it definitely prove me that I was sooo wrong. Second of all, if you love Harry Potter and everything about magic, then you'll definitely love this story.
Emma was a young bright lawyer, who wanted to be the best at her job. But only one second of inattention and her life will have a 360 overturn. That's where Stephen and James came in the picture. They saw an event in Emma's life and they instantly knew she was special. Why? Because she possessed powers she didn't even know about.
Because of this new discovery, Emma was forced to leave her actual life behind, for a while, and go with Stephen and James to a special place, just as Hogwarts, where Emma can be trained and learn more about her powers and how to use them. But Emma was followed by dangerous people and she will have a really though job to escape all that madness alive.
I can say that every detail about this book was impressive! The world Sorcha built was fantastic! All the characters and their insane chemistry made me fall in love with this book. We had a very, very slow burn, with lots of angst, banter and a hate-love relationship between Emma and James. The tension built around them was the main thing which made me adore this book, loving this type of slow burn and banter. James was the grumpiest man ever, with a pretty dark demeanour, but he stole my heart with his way of being, even though he was definitely portrayed as a morally grey character.
I could talk for hours about this book but I'm going to stop here. This is a must read book! You really cannot tell that this is the debut book of Sorcha. I promise you'll love it and will be entranced by the story. The ending of this part was completely insane! I cannot wait for the next book of this series, for which I'm super excited now, knowing it's already finished🤭.
If you want a book to get you out of a reading slump, then this is THE ONE!! From the moment I started this book, I was hooked. I was reading on my way to work, at work, on my way back from work, after work, I did not wanna put this book down, not even for a second🤩
Cerulean Truth is full of action and magic. The magic system was so fun to learn about, since it’s based on emotions. The sarcasm in this book was just chef’s kiss😚🤌🏼 Even the side characters are well written!!
Emma has been through so much yet she continues to persevere against all odds. I will always love me a strong determined FMC. On the other hand, my heart absolutely hurts for James. Justice for James, he’s just misunderstood☹️
These two together were a sight to see, their constant bickering and getting on each other’s nerves made for some great entertainment, especially their training sessions😁 That aside, they’re so protective of each other it warms my heart😫
Anyway, that ending will haunt me for the foreseeable future until I can get my hands on book 2😭😭
On another note, I refuse to believe this is Sorcha’s debut novel!!!! She absolutely outdid herself, and I’m so lucky to have had the opportunity to do an advanced reading of Cerulean Truth, and to follow her along on this incredible journey🤗 Thank you to the author for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion🫶🏼
Perfection, but I need a few days to process that ending before I review.... I don't know how to continue day to day
(The next day) This was an emotional rollercoaster, and I loved every second!
The characters are complex and easy to empathize with, their motivations clear, and watching their dynamics shift is captivating. The world-building is seamless—introducing a complex world in an engaging way, with humor that keeps the pace moving. I loved the magic system, especially the concept of processing emotions into magic, and the struggles that come with it were beautifully portrayed.
The plot is well-paced and keeps you hooked, making you feel like you're discovering the world alongside Emma. The character development is powerful, filled with emotional highs and lows, trust-building and breaking, gaining strength, struggling with loss of control and relapsing into old habits.
The ending left me heartbroken, and I can't wait for the sequel!
What started as a fun way to kill time during my insomnia somehow spiraled into a romantasy slow burn packed with magic, emotional trauma, sarcastic banter, and enough sexual tension to make even my laptop sweat.
Do I regret it? Absolutely not. Would I survive in this universe I created? Absolutely not.
Also, I somehow managed to write the most infuriating, heart-wrenching love story where every character either needs therapy, a hug, or to just get their shit together. Did I do this on purpose? Maybe. Did I cackle like a villain while writing it? Definitely.
Final verdict? Five stars, mostly because if I don’t rate it highly, who will? Also, I need to justify the sleepless nights and existential crises this book gave me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have two more books to write and about seven different breakdowns to schedule.
Tropes: 🖤 modern day magical world 🖤 master/padawan 🖤 slowwwwww burn, angst (🥀he loves me, he loves me not…) 🖤 touch her and die 🖤 only one bed 🖤 twists and turns
What an epic new Romantasy!! I typically am a fast reader, but I took my time on this one to try and fully grasp all the details… and whew, I’m glad I did!
First off, I loved this book! I will also say, I know it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea! Cerulean Truth has an epic amount of world-building… like Crescent City level of world-building. This can be intimidating for some readers, but I devoured it! I truly felt like the author described every detail in depth which left me understanding more of the world she was creating.
🪄The book is set in a current/modern day timeline, but describes a hidden magical world of magi.
🪄While reading, I felt Harry Potter (more specifically the world for Fantastic Beasts) + Star Wars, master/padawan vibes & I love all of those things, so I was here for it!!
🪄 In order for me to love a Romantasy, I have to love the main characters… and Emma & James did NOT disappoint! Their banter was delicious!! - Emma reminds me of a Katniss Everdeen. She’s smart, determined, and witty (without trying too hard!) - James is without a doubt Theo James… he’s a badass warrior. He falls first & hard, however, he attempts to hide his feelings due to his leadership position. He is very protective of Emma & would (literally) kill for her.
‼️Here were a few notes I made while reading… skip if you don’t want spoilers!!! ‼️ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . - Lots of good slow-burn, angst, sexual tension... 🥵 - ……. that’s suspicious. 🤨 ,🕵🏼♀️making my list of mole suspects… - FINALLY get some make out/ boob grabbing action at 69%. (Oh the irony.) 😘 - ….. I love a good slow-burn, back and forth… but ya’ll acting like Xaden & Violet with the fighting and storming out on each other! Whew… just get it on already!!! - end of Ch. 56, (95%) I threw my Kindle across the room. WTF?! 😳 - end of Ch. 57- recovered my kindle… and once again threw it across the room. 😮🤬 - End of book: someone come find me… or send me book 2 IMMEDIATELY! I’m hanging on the edge of a cliff!!
🩵 Thank you, Sorcha, for graciously providing the arc of Cerulean Truth in exchange for my honest review!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Oh my gawd! That was absolutely incredible! The magic systems, the world building, the character depth. All of it was just phenomenal! And that cliffhanger?! I don’t even know what I’m going to do with myself while I wait for book 2. The tension between Emma and James was perfect! Their banter was incredible! Their love/hate relationship was so fun to read and I loved seeing them develop and grow together. The only thing I’m sad about is that I can’t read this for the first time again. This is definitely my favorite read this year and I’ve read some incredible books! Please read this!
- I have received an ARC of this book and I'm willingly leaving this review -
"Yes. A single word. A single, three-letter word. But those three letters made all the difference in the world because I had her in my arms and she let me."
I absolutely fell in love with this story. Set in a magical dimension, we get to explore this new reality through the eyes of Emma Thompson who discovers that she is a maga by accident. In comes James Walker who completely changes her life... in the best and worst possible ways. The author doesn't shy away from adding interesting facts to the story that make the plot attention grabbing: feisty heroine, morally grey hero, complex politics, explosive action, powerful dispalys of magic, emotional struggles, genuine friendship, painful betrayals, plenty of plot twists and enough spicy moments to keep you going. All these make the perfect recipe for a book that won't let you put it down until you've finished it. I loved the fact that Emma didn't need James to save her all the time and he didn't squash her spirit... she knows that she needed help to reach full potential of her powers and he knows that she is strong and he wants to make her believe it as well. Altough he is fiercly protective of her, he sees her as his equal, or dare I say, the female version of himself. Yes, they argue alot and they have so many funny moments of bickering, but the sweet moments make you truly root for their love story. Yes, there's a lot of miscommunication, but it doesn't take away the fact that it makes the plot move along. And yes, it's a slowburn, but it makes the steamy scenes all the more valuable. Fair warning: the book ends on a cliffhanger, of course, which makes me that more eager to see what the next book has in store. Sorcha Reagh made me feel all the emotions her characters felt which is a true testament of her skills and magical powers with the words.
This was my last book of the year, and I miss the characters so dearly already. The second book cannot come fast enough.
Enter our new shadow daddy James, and Emma who is an aspiring lawyer with her whole life figured out as soon as she can impress the bigwigs at the law firm she's interning at. One day her whole life does a 180 ripping her from the very life she knows and transporting her into the magical realm of Cyclos. This book is everything you can want and more if you enjoy the Zodiac Academy, Fourth Wing realms as you travel through this book you will experience vivid imagery, twists and turns that you don't expect, fighting, and bonds that are built that I am sure are going to only get better as her next book comes out. I would definitely tell booktok to watch out because their next big hit is here. I love Sorcha. We are soulmates.
*Slow burn Romance *Secret Magical World *Student x Teacher *Morally Grey MMC *Stubborn FMC
I was lucky to get to read this as an ARC and was excited to dive in to it. A great modern magical series debut that had me screaming at my phone with love frustration.
Lots of tension, broody moodiness, and the pace keeps you invested in the overarching storyline. I’m glad I knew this was the first in a series because I would have rabid had I not been aware.
The ending was shocking and I am left sitting on the edge of my seat wanting to read the next book 🙌🏽 Highly recommend to anyone wanting to read new authors and loves a good broody romance in a magical world setting.
This book is incredible. Not the usual romantasy story that people expect. Emma is a 23 year old interning at a law firm. She ends up working for 3 days straight to finish watching all the adult films which are part of a case. Upon leaving work she is absolutely knackered and just wants to go home and sleep. She notices a man at the other side of the street watching her. As she's crossing the street she isn't paying attention to what she is doing and steps out in front of a car, ends up in hospital only to be told she is absolutely fine. No one understands how that was possible. She returns to work the next day only to see this man again. He approaches her and wants to speak to her. From that conversation in a coffee shop her entire life changes. Is it for the better or not????
James is a Magus who is lethal and meets up with Emma at the request of the man who's been keeping and eye on her. He is utterly rude to her and the tension starts from the very first conversation they have and the tension only gets worse throughout the book. Neither of them want to admit their feelings that are developing towards the other so instead they just fight constantly. Neither one can say anything without the other taking it the wrong way or taking offence to what's been said.
I was not expecting the last few chapters at all. I expected it to be like some of the other romantasy books I have read with a happy ending. But there is so many twists and turns in the last few chapters that you never know what's going to happen. James is jealous of everyone who talks to her, Emma is jealous of a certain woman.
Eventually they admit their feelings for each other but its too late at that point as something extremely rare and meaning happens between the wrong people and it puts a huge wall up between Emma and James.
I cannot wait for the second book to be released as I need to know what happened.
I am so upset with this book you have no idea! I highly enjoyed and couldn’t put it down but I am also very angry at it! The rollercoaster of emotions I went through, then add in all the twists and turns especially that big one near the end! I’m so mad and hurt and in shock and I don’t know what to do with myself!
I have a love/hate relationship with our MCs. Very captivating characters who are strong and I admire them highly but man they are both stubborn and need some communication skills!! But whoo boy is the tension thick! How can it not be when you have sweaty training sessions! 😉
Yes this was definitely as good book and I seriously need to get Book 2 like now cause I’m sitting here, all finished, unsure how to continue on with my life……
The first 45% of the book was a tad slow, but still had necessary world-building within that did keep me entertained enough to read more. It has just the right amount of mystery to keep you guessing. It is also a slow-burn romantasy that keeps you screaming at the book “Just hook up already!!”
The last 10% had me literally on the edge of my seat. I think I actually yelled out loud, “NO,” and then proceeded to just stare with my mouth open and my hands plastered to the sides of my face. I have a few questions that I need answered right now, and among them is when will the rest of the series be released? I will be continuing this story until I get all the answers I seek.
Ok so I have finally recovered enough from reading Cerulean Truth by @sorchareagh that I can write a coherent review! I LOVED THIS ARC and I mean that very genuinely! I laughed and I teared up as I followed Emma and James through their journey all the way to that crazy cliffhanger (which I am still so upset about because WHY DID I HAVE TO READ AN ADVANCED COPY OF THIS I NEED MORE EMMA AND JAMES I CANT WAIT)!!!
Emma is just a lawyer until one day an accident changes her whole life and sucks her into a world of magi! James the future leader of a major colony in the magical world who happens to be hiding many secrets is her handsome guide. This book had just the right amount of complex magic, mysterious enemies, dualing POVs and incredible yearning between the main characters ( I love a good yearning romance). I would HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who wants a fantastical romance that they haven't seen before!
ARC review and 100% honest My notes got deleted, so here goes lol
Sorcha's writing is phenomenal. I felt like I was there, not a narrator in a 3rd person view. The conversations were like people would have in real life.
Dual POV cerulean colored haze shadow daddy red haze shadow mommy(?) 🫣😅 banter and bickering tension violence protective and defensive killing past and present trama Unique magic system and world building (floating swings! Who would have thought of that!)
there are some spicy scenes, but I don't think it was that spicy, but spicy is personal, a great make-out session, and in another scene, james relieves himself
Sorcha is now a favorite author of mine, and i can't wait to witness how she grows and be a part of it. I honestly can't wait for future books from her with this series and others
read it as an Arc copy and couldn't be more happy because I got the chance to read this beautiful captivating action and emotion packed story before soooooo many people and i can't wait for it to actually publish and alllll the readers read it cause one thing I am sure of y'all would get addicted like I had become now.
the plot amazing the characters mesmerising and you can connect to them fully the elements alot more then you could think of so all in all a perfect read
ones you start reading you can't stop you can't wait to read more to know more and to bite your nail at some point and it has the FML energy and i am soooooo happy she didn't make the FML weak or powerless like in now a days fantasy novels the the couple they are power and the emotions between them directly their bickering-love-possessiveness alll to well
i can write thousand more things but i would left you guys be curious so once it releases you read fast and trust me you wouldn't regret
guys ....this book....justice for my manzs frist of all he misunderstood. I just wanna hug him But the fmc SHE IS STRONG AF . honestly I loveeeee fmc who don't let people walk all over them..dear author YOU ATE TF UP.WITH THIS BOOK....BUT LIKE WHENS THE NEXT ONE COMING POOKIE!?!? IM GETTING DESPERATE xxx
Sorcha Reagh’s Cerulean Truth is a spellbinding journey that blends fantasy, romance, and a touch of dark allure into a story that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. From the very first page, I was hooked.
The story follows Emma Thompson, a driven young lawyer in Boston whose life takes a dramatic turn when she discovers a hidden world she’s deeply connected to. As she struggles to balance this new reality with mounting secrets that threaten her loved ones, Emma must also navigate her complicated feelings for James Walker—a brooding and infuriatingly handsome male who’s about to become her new leader. Their relationship is as hot-and-cold as they come, and I found myself shouting at them both throughout the book. Reagh’s writing makes you feel like you’re part of their fiery dynamic, experiencing every moment of tension, frustration, and yearning right alongside them.
What stood out the most was the world-building. Reagh introduces the Magi, magical beings who wield incredible powers rooted in their emotions. The concept of manifesting through emotions was both fresh and captivating, adding a unique depth to the fantasy world. It’s a fascinating take on magic, and I found myself wishing I could step into this world and experience it firsthand.
Emma herself was incredibly relatable. Her struggle with processing and expressing her emotions, while maintaining a strong and independent exterior, hit close to home. As someone who understands the desire to keep walls up while secretly longing for love and protection, I felt deeply connected to her character. And on top of the drama and tension, the humour and sarcasm woven throughout added an extra layer of charm, making the story feel both heartfelt and human. A few giggles along the way never hurt!
At one point, I had picked up Onyx Storm and was highly invested (as everyone knows)—until something happened that I didn’t see coming. I made it to chapter five but found I couldn’t stop thinking about Emma and Cerulean Truth. I had to put Onyx Storm down just to carry on with Cerulean Truth! That’s how deeply the story and characters had hooked me.
That said, at times, it felt like we were skipping moments - while these weren’t critical details, they could have elevated the overall reading experience for me.
And then there’s the ending. Let me just say, Sorcha Reagh, how could you?! It’s a cliffhanger that left me ready to throw my kindle across the room. I need the second book now!
This is a slow-burn romance, so if you enjoy the anticipation of tension building over time, this one’s for you. I’d recommend Cerulean Truth to anyone who’s ever felt like they weren’t enough, to those who love fantasy grounded in the human experience, and to fans of modern, relatable storytelling. With its unique plot, emotional depth, and unforgettable characters, this is a book you won’t want to miss.
My experience with Cerulean Truth was unforgettable. I still can’t stop thinking about James and Emma, and I’m already eager to read the sequel.
Imagine a world where controlling your emotions can transform reality. This is the heart of Cerulean Truth by Sorcha Reagh, a story that hooked me from start to finish 💓
Who are the main characters? • James: The “grumpy guy”—gruff, unable to express his feelings, with a difficult past. A powerful wizard destined to lead, but he refuses to listen to his heart… especially when he falls for Emma. • Emma: A young woman on the verge of realizing her dream of becoming a lawyer, until an accident changes everything. She survives only thanks to a power she didn’t know she had, discovering that she’s a witch. Now she must give up everything she knew to face a life she doesn’t understand… and a magic that’s on the verge of exploding.
Why should you read this book? • A unique fantasy: Here, magic isn’t just power—it’s the reflection of deepest emotions. Anger, love, fear… everything can turn into pure magic. • An emotional rollercoaster: Not just adventure, but a story of growth, inner struggles, and a complicated love that will make you dream long after you’ve finished the book. • An explosive ending: Prepare for a cliffhanger that will leave you breathless and eagerly awaiting the next book.
Recommended for anyone looking for an original dark fantasy with a deep connection to the characters ❤️
Have you ever wished you could relive the magic of Harry Potter for the first time? This book does just that! From the moment Emma discovers, in her twenties, that she’s a mage, I was hooked. We’re whisked away into a beautifully described magical world filled with action, intrigue, and heart-stopping moments.
Emma is everything I love in a protagonist tough, determined, and unapologetically herself. She speaks her mind and refuses to follow anyone’s lead, especially James, the powerful leader of the mages. Watching their dynamic unfold was one of the book’s highlights. James is used to being in charge, but Emma constantly challenges him, leading to fiery debates, undeniable chemistry, and a deliciously slow-burn tension that keeps you on edge.
The plot is a whirlwind of action and emotion. Each scene is packed with dialogue that feels natural and engaging, and the side characters are just as well-written as the leads. I found myself caring deeply for everyone and fully immersed in the magical system, which is incredibly detailed and easy to follow.
And let’s talk about the world-building—WOW. The author creates a vivid, magical realm that feels both new and nostalgic, pulling you in with every page. The blend of magic, sarcasm, and raw emotion makes this story unforgettable.
This book is an emotional rollercoaster that had me hooked from start to finish. The ending? A massive cliffhanger that left me desperate for the next installment. If you’re looking for a book with a strong, relatable heroine, an unforgettable slow-burn romance, and a magical world that will leave you breathless, this is it.
I couldn’t put it down, and I can’t wait for book two!
I LOVED this book!! It was so good! Ive been a fantasy lover for years, and im so happy theres been a popular rise in romance fantasy. I was enthralled by the world building and character development. It was so well written I almost felt like I was Emma! She’s a hard working girl who feels as though she lives in her parents shadow despite all of her success. I’m so happy she finds her true self in the book! James, my man James, he’s such a right fit for Emma and is very patient from the very beginning. Some scenes are 💕💕🌶️
Oh. My. GOSH! I can't even begin to explain how amazing this book was! This story is absolutely captivating and has you hooked from the beginning. I have fallen in love with Emma and James and can only hope that their relationship continues in the next books to come! Absolutely love and adore everything about this gem and I for sure will continue to sing its praises! I am hooked and I have no regrets! Looking forward to the next books!
Thought that was well written and kept my attention. Still new to the fantasy/romantasy world and I couldn’t put it down! Was lucky enough to get an advanced copy and I’m already planning on reading it again!
I loved this book!!! Emma Thompson is the character you fall in love with right away and I loooooved her!!! How cool she discovers she has this rare and lethal magic and she’s a badass lawyer! Throw in James her new companion and Leader in training and it makes for the perfect romance! There is battles there is magic and there is romance what more could you ask for?!? This book was not what I was expecting when I started reading it and I’m glad I stuck with it because wow!!
Did this book steal sleep from me? Yes. Did this book rob me of reality? Yes. Am I desperate for Book 2? Abso-frickin-lutely!!!
I’m obsessed.
Let’s get into it. We start with classic urban fantasy elements: Emma, our FMC, is your average human—or so she thinks. She’s an aspiring lawyer, driven, self-assured, and laser-focused on her career. Everything is mapped out, and she’s in control… until she isn’t. Her world gets flipped upside down when she discovers she’s not human at all, but something much more extraordinary—a “maga.”
From the moment this revelation hits, the story shifts, diving headfirst into a realm of intrigue, danger, and magic. The transition from Emma’s structured, mundane life to this richly woven fantasy is seamless and utterly gripping. The author masterfully builds the world around you with lush, in-depth descriptions that feel like you’re watching it unfold on a big screen. It’s cinematic in scope yet intimate in detail, pulling you in as Emma unravels the truths of her new reality. And as she endeavours to uncover the mystery that is, well, her- it feels like you’re walking alongside her, every step of the way.
Emma’s character arc is one of my favorite parts of this book. Watching her go from a controlled, self-reliant woman to someone forced to navigate chaos and rely on others (while still holding onto her sass and strength) was such a satisfying journey. Her determination to master her abilities—abilities no one seems to fully understand—had me rooting for her every step of the way.
Now, let’s talk romance. Prepare yourself for the slow burn of all slow burns. The tension between Emma and James is electric, practically sparking off the page. Every glance, every loaded interaction had me on the edge of my seat. Talk about build up. And James? Oh, he’s a perfect blend of Prince Charming and deadly assassin—dark, broody, protective, yet disarmingly witty. But fair warning: these two will test your patience. Their stubbornness, miscommunication, and undeniable chemistry will have you ready to throw your book across the room one moment and swooning the next. It’s maddening and addictive all at once.
This book will take you on an emotional rollercoaster. Fury, fear, grief, love, betrayal, desperation—you’ll feel it all. The plot twists will drive that emotional dagger even deeper, and combined with the political intrigue and high stakes, you’ll be flipping pages like your life depends on it. But be warned: while you’ll get just enough answers to keep you going, you’ll also walk away with a head full of questions, desperate for more. And my god, as you approach the end of the book are you bombarded with the notion of what the actual heck is happening.
Needless to say, the drip-fed revelations will keep you hooked, and the lingering mysteries will leave you desperate for the next book. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. It can’t come soon enough.
I have so many thoughts about this book I don’t even know how to put it into words.
The whole book had me questioning everything left and right. I thought I loved the MMC and then I didn’t. And then I did. And then I DIDN’T. I don’t even know how to make sense of it. And then that ENDING! 😭😭 I’m gonna need help getting out of this book hangover.
I’ll just say I don’t trust anything for what it is in this book. I just know the author is gonna pull out something crazier. (I mean this in the best way.) I’m just preparing to have my heart torn apart again and again.
I love Emma (FMC). And I just know even greater things will hopefully be coming for her in book 2. Emma deserves the world. 😭 She’s too good for what she’s been put through!
If you like romantasy, awesome world building, magic, morally grey MMCs, and so much more, this one is for you!
Content Warning: Adult language, light spice, lots of bloody murder, mention of attempted SA.
This book is amazingly written, with exceptional world-building and an incredibly crafted magic system. I found myself completely hooked, unable to put it down. The playful banter and bickering between James and Emma, along with the dynamic between Matthew and Jackson, had me laughing out loud. There were also several moments that shocked me and left me speechless. I experienced so many emotional reading this book, I loved it. Book 2 cannot come quick enough - I need answers!!!
